This was the first show with Momometal as an official member, I love hearing that the crowd cheered extra loud at the "Momometal desu" parts.
Hell yeah! This is typically an intro song for Babymetal, but for this show, it is used as the intro to the encore. This song has also been used as an outro song for Su's 16th Bday concert (Legend 1997) and is an absolutely insane performance. Way more "culty" and dark lol.
Also, they are saying Desu (silent "u"), which means "I am / we are".
Su-metal desu = I am Su-metal
Babymetal desu = We are Babymetal.
Desu! Desu! Desu! Desu! = We are! We are! We are! We are!
Babymetal loves a good play on words lol.
*Significance:* This was the first time the full version of "BABYMETAL DEATH" was performed live since Yui's departure in 2018. The night before, at the end of Babymetal Begins Black Night (Day 1), Momoko was inaugurated as the official 3rd member. So, this was the first "Momometal Death!" ever, and the crowd lost their sh*t.
Welcome back, great reaction. 🦊 'BABYMETAL Death' was the first song on the first album and this video marks the 10th anniversary of its release.
They had not played it live since 2017 because it is an intro song and they are introducing themselves by name, but they couldn't really use it with just two official members and the original third member Yuimetal didn't appear at all after October 2017 and officially announced she was leaving the band in October 2018.
This performance was on 2nd April 2023 - the first concert with Momometal as an official member, so 'BABYMETAL Death' was back ... I don't know if you heard the crowd cheer particularly loudly when she introduced herself as "Momometal desu".
The whole song is based on a pun. The English word death sounds to a Japanese speaker like the Japanese word desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp.
Desu means to be - as in I am, we are, it is etc. Basically the lyrics for this song are: "B_A_B_Y_M_E_T_A_L" ... "I am Su-metal", "I am Moametal", "I am Momometal" "We are BABYMETAL" ... "Death Death Death Death Death Death Death Death".
You got a hint of the sort of thing they do and the theatrics at the start of this performance when they play 'BABYMETAL Death' ... I don't remember if you ever saw the Legend 1997 performance where they were celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday 10 years ago.
Being an introduction song they would normally play it right at the start of the concerts (it is a great way to get the crowd hyped and joining in straight away), but that was one of the special occasions where they played it later in the show - for that one it was the finale.

They're celebrating 10 years anniversary of the first album and recently released a Gimme Chocolate!! challenge on social media.
This was the first "Babymetal Death" version with MomoMetal as an official member and it was a come back song after December 2017 iirc. They did Babymetal Death Shin Version at Budokan 2021 but it's a way different version.
Next month is coming Legend MM celebrating MomoMetal special birthday in Yokohama.

It's funny how you said that the songs prior to the new album were kind of cutesy and they are now getting serious. Well this song is from their first album:D. Today was the 10th anniversay of their first albums release so that's why they treated us with this video.

Watch Babymetal Death from 2013- Legend 1997 live concert . That was when Yui-Metal and Mikio Fujioka (RIP) from Kami Band was still with them. The intensity never left them. They've always been hard. You just haven't experienced enough of their music.
Great reaction. This used to be BabyMetals opening song for years and has now returned for last years world tour . This was the 2nd last song at this show . Ijime Dame Zettai was the finishing song .
Desu is saying i am, but it sounds like Death, so they have a cool way of intruding themselves I am, or we are .

This was the first time they performed the full version of Babymetal Death since Yui's last performance in 2017. They hadn't performed it at all during the period when there was just two of them, so this occasional marked the moment that Babymetal became a trio again. Due to the special occasion BMD was actually the second last song of the night. Since this show, they have opened with Babymetal Death at every show.
I was one of the people in the crowd at this show yelling "Death! Death! Death!" and doing the Fox Sign, and yes it is exhausting. I had a sore shoulder by the end of the show from holding up the fox sign and fist pumping etc. The concert took place at a stadium in Yokohama called PIA Arena MM; the capacity of the venue is about 12,000. This show was actually a smaller venue than most of their big shows, so it was quite hard to get tickets to.
Love hearing the crowd cheer louder when Momometal said "Momometal Desu" she's definitely earned it!!!😁😁😁🤘🦊🤘

Take it a step farther. Not only does 'SU-METAL DESU' mean she's introducing herself, it's also her super-hero transformation phrase.
Like on Sailor Moon, Usagi says 'Moon Prism Power!' and turns into Sailor Moon, Suzuka Nakamoto shouts 'I AM SU-METAL' and becomes possessed by the spirit of the Fox God and transforms into the Metal Goddess SU-METAL.
The magical girl who transforms into a hero is a huge trope in Japan, comparable to Disney princesses in the west. BABYMETAL DEATH! follows the trope and it's the moment that they all transform into their magical alter egos at the start of the show.

The crosses actually signify rebirth, as in leveling up, birth of a new and improved Babymetal.

Really fun job with this with this reaction. I have to say-and this will sound like heresy to some fans. But this has become my favorite version of "Death". There is a whole complex lore involving this song. And the Legend 1997 Apocalypse version being perhaps-for many reasons-the most iconic and legendary. But as you mentioned the maturity the ladies bring to this and the power of the audience. This performance kinda blows my mind. Again good work.

Lol sorry but that wasn't Su doing the scream. That was still the backing track that you hear all throughout the song....however there is quite a bit of a debate if Momometal is a growler. On Metali it might be Momometal screaming "Are You Ready?!?!" But it's not 100% proof or confirmed it is her
I have wondered about that. I'm guessing it's a backing track and here's why. I really believe Amuse looks out for the ladies and screams and growls strike me as too potentially harmful to their beautiful voices. I'm guessing they have a kind of why risk attitude to the occasional stray scream. IMHO!
