Great reaction. There can't be many bands who would crucify their lead singer on stage to celebrate her 16th birthday (Legend 1997 was the title of the show celebrating her 16th birthday in December 2013).
This was 3 months before they released their first album .... and from just 18 months or so before where they played their first solo headline show in a venue with a capacity of 150 they were able to sell out this venue (Makuhari Messe) with about 9,000 fans.
At the risk of repeating what you have probably been told already, I will try to explain what was actually happening.
There is an English translation of the intro video in the description which would have helped a bit (perhaps) with understanding what was happening:
    "Legend 1997.
It is told that receiving the legendary neck brace from the god of Metal,
she shall abandon her human life and be reborn as a goddess.
The bloodline which has been passed down from ancient times
is destined to be the guide, boarding the ark of time.
    The apocalypse is prophesied
    DOOMSDAY comes
There remains ... little time ..."
Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit (it had this narrative running all the way through and even started with a lip-synced dance remix of their song 'Headbanger') to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto, a J-Pop Idol, to be reborn as Su-metal, a Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance.
'BABYMETAL Death' was the first track on the first album and was most often used as the show opener (without the crucifixion) - it is the perfect introduction - that is what the lyrics are:-
"B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L Death Death Death Death Death Death. Su-metal death. Yuimetal death. Moametal death. BABYMETAL death. Death Death Death Death Death Death."
It is a play on words. There is no 'TH' sound in Japanese, so to a Japanese speaker the English word death sounds like desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp. Desu means "To be - I am - you are - we are - it is" etc ... so in Japan you might introduce yourself as "D Music Life desu" (We are D Music Life).
All they were doing throughout the song was introducing themselves by name and introducing BABYMETAL by name - and 'death' is just the sort of thing you'd expect to be chanted by any self respecting metal band and their audience while the lead singer is crucified.
There were a couple of homages in this performance too. The opening drum riff is an homage to Metallica's 'One' and the statue crumbling at the end pays homage to Metallica's Justice For All tour of 1989 where they also had a statue (Lady Justice) crumble at the end of their shows. The neck brace is a tribute to X Japan drummer/pianist/songwriter/composer Yoshiki who damaged his neck so badly headbanging that he had to wear a neck brace a lot of the time, especially when performing.
On special occasions 'BABYMETAL Death' was used later in the show - it was the finale here at Legend 1997, the show celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday ... and they only crucify Su on special occasions. The last time with these sort of theatrics was at Legend S, Baptism XX in December 2017 to help her celebrate her 20th birthday - and that one had extra flames.

  • @AxeSwipe2011
    @AxeSwipe2011 Před 6 měsíci +58

Great reaction! The double-kick drums at the start is a tribute to Metallica's "One" as well as the statue crumbling at the end, a nod to Metallica's Lady Justice statue. The neckbrace is homage to X-Japan's Drummer/Pianist/Songwriter who had to wear one to prevent aggravating a neck injury because he headbanged so hard while performing.
"BABYMETAL DEATH" is typically an opening number that is just the girls introducing themselves to the audience. They say. "Su-metal desu...Yuimetal desu...Moametal desu....BABYMETAL desu" while spelling out BABYMETAL and chanting in between. Desu means "I am/You are/we are" (the U is not pronounced) and sounds so much like death and the Japanese love their plays on words.
After Yui left the song was essentially broken and no longer performed. Instead it was replaced by the shorter "BABYMETAL DEATH Shin Version", "Future Metal" and "In The Name Of" as show openers.
Now that Momometal is officially part if the group, "BABYMETAL DEATH" has been ressurected and the ladies are introducing themselves again at the start of every show with "Su-metal desu... Moametal desu....Momometal desu"!

I’ve got to say, the Japanese know how to throw a birthday party! My 16th celebration was nothing like this. I’m sure someone is going to cover the word, “desu,” and the homages to Metallica and X-Japan. I don’t want to repeat it, but will cover it if not done in a while.

Many people say Babymetal became global sensation after their Sonisphere performance, and its true but this performance of Babymetal Death is what legetimised Babymetal as bonafide metal band. The aura here is just something else.

I can’t imagine what the people at Sonisphere must have felt like when they went back home and started looking more into Babymetal just to come across this. The sheer level of “What the fuck!?” factor probably changed the scene out there permanently.

Jpop is pretty good tho. Some of the Vocaloid inspired Jpop is lit. Like Yoasobi and Ado. Yoasobi got age restricted on CZcams because their lyrics were so dark. That is pretty metal. Yoasobi is playing at the Bring Me the Horizon festival with Babymetal, Hanabie and Maximum the Hormone.

Headbanger and BxMxC was what hooked me, but this performance solidified my place among The One. Like you I learned a lot from the comments about the background of this song and performance and sense then I had a pretty good idea of what Babymetal was about. I guess why many wanted you to wait a while on this one is because it is probably one of their best performances and should stay that way. It was a special moment in history for the group and shouldn’t be something witnessed by anyone the fans know aren’t going to appreciate it. I have seen some people shit on Babymetal on this platform (CZcams) and I have never seen anyone recommend this as a means of “convincing” someone to change their mind. Not to say there aren’t some fans that would. But I feel plenty of hardcore fans treat this performance as something sacred. Even I am hesitant to share this with friends unless I feel they would be open enough to have their minds blown.
After becoming a fan this year and finding out they re-debuted this year as well with a new member and started performing this song as their opener once more, I HAD to see them at all costs, which I did on this most recent tour.

This song is usually played at beginning the show. It's them introducing themselves. A play on words. Des I believe is what they say which sounds like death. Sumetal des. Which means I am Sumetal. BabyMetal des. We are BabyMetal. The crowd spells out BabyMetal and then chants death. This show they played it at the end. It was Su 16th bday. She sacrificed her idol self to become a metal goddess. Something along those lines haha. BabyMetal has a lot of lore that goes with the band. Usually when they play this there is no crucifixion. When they sold out Tokyo dome two nights in a row. One of the shows they started off with this song and all three girls came up out of parts of the stage on crosses. Hearing that whole crowd chant death was amazing. But yes killer way to end a show. Then the statue head falling away like the statue on Metallica and justice for all tour. It was their tip of the hat to Metallica. I'm pretty sure I explained it right if not sure someone on here will know more. Lol. Anyway Bud. Great reaction. Correction from what I read below it is actually Desu.

They actually stopped doing this when Yui left, but brought it back for their latest tour after making Momo an official member. Check out "In the name of" as well. It's what they did for an intro when Yui left.

Nothing to see here. Just Su-metal celebrating her 16th birthday with her friends and some of their fans (like 9.000 of them) all chanting DEATH! DEATH! DEATH! DEATH!... haha... 😁
Now seriously, this is from the concert Legend 1997 (SU-METAL seitan sai) aka SU-METAL's 16th birthday party and took place on December 21st, 2013 at the Makuhari Messe event hall in Chiba (Greater Tokyo Area).
Song's name is "BABYMETAL Death" and it's a play on words, actually. I'll tell you why. Lyrics are quite simple: "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L" "SU-METAL desu", "YUIMETAL desu", "MOAMETAL desu", "BABYMETAL desu" "Death death death death death death..." etc Desu (the U is silent so it sounds like the English word "death", and means "I am, you are, we are". So, they are basically introducing themselves. This is (again) usually an opening song for obvious reasons, but this time they used it as a closing number. The meaning of the whole thing is the sacrifice of SU-METAL, giving up her mortal life as a human and Idol to reborn as a metal goddess.
The beat on the intro and the final statue crumbling are homages to Metallica. The neckbrace thing is an homage to X-Japan's Yoshiki Hayashi who had to wear one (even during concerts) due to the injuries caused for headbanging excessively.
    Until next time!

Awesome! A few fun facts about this concert:
Dec 2013 concert celebrating Su-metal’s 16th birthday. She is the Legend, born in 1997. This was when Babymetal just got big in Japan, but not yet overseas.
Lore: Fox God summons Babymetal to revitalize the “Heavy Metal Spirit” by infiltrating the big bad Idol Industry, the oppressors of metal.
In her fight, Su-metal sacrifices her own life as mortal and idol to be reborn a goddess of metal.
This was the closer of a 14 song concert. First 9 songs played to tracks and fake band in skeleton costumes. The 5 song encore brought on the real band, the Kami Band. Headbanger was song 12 of setlist, followed by an emotional ballad, ending with BABYMETAL DEATH.
Lyrics: Desu (silent U) means “I am / We are”, e.g., Babymetal Desu = “We are Babymetal”. Their “punny”, cute, and metal way of an introduction song (in this case a closer).

An interesting take posted on BABYMETAL REDDIT by VulpineDeity:
Take it a step farther. Not only does 'SU-METAL DESU' mean she's introducing herself, it's also her super-hero transformation phrase.
Like on Sailor Moon, Usagi says 'Moon Prism Power!' and turns into Sailor Moon, Suzuka Nakamoto shouts 'I AM SU-METAL' and becomes possessed by the spirit of the Fox God and transforms into the Metal Goddess SU-METAL.
The magical girl who transforms into a hero is a huge trope in Japan, comparable to Disney princesses in the west. BABYMETAL DEATH! follows the trope and it's the moment that they all transform into their magical alter egos at the start of the show.

Just to be clear, song title is "Babymetal Death" not "Death" alone, it's usually a common mistake due to the title of the uploader.
This is another song they brought back to live concerts in this World Tour 2023 as an opener after 2017 (when YuiMetal was still in the group) and fans are really glad with this come back, although here they're using as an ender as part of this special event.
Song is heavy but wait until you hear Babymetal Death Shin Ver. from Budokan 2021 or "Sis Anger" to decide which one is heavier. You can find the kamishibai (narrated intro) translated in the description box if you're watching GuilhermeCait clip.
If you're a Metallica fan you can spot the beggining riffs of _"One"_ song, as well of the -"virgen mary"- image behind (it's not, it's SuMetal resembles and Lady Justice Metallica tribute, even statue crumbling down is an homage) they're truly BM sensei and they support the group too. Our girls said this is one of the most physical demanding song, and you can see the reason why, they normally used this song as an opener and a way to warm up for next performances, in this rare exception this was at the end of the show, an epic finale.
This was during SuMetal 16th birthday, the same place you probably saw at Gimme Chocolate!! MV and she was sacrificed as a j-pop idol and reborn as a metal goddess queen, the Fox God has bless all of us. -NotACult- 👀
The neckbrace is part of BM lore and you can see it first during Headbanger!! official MV, Yoshiki (pianist and drummer on X-Japan) suffer serious injuries during a live concert while headbanging so hard (this was way back before BabyMetal was even created), after that he needs to use neckbrace to avoid doing that movement, he still playing and being active, he's a living legend.
They are singing their names as a way to introduce themselves in japanese way but with the pun intended play of words: "SuMetal desu" means "I'm SuMetal" but she is trying to say "SuMetal death", same for the rest of girls with their respective names, and the rest of the song is:
      "B - A - B -Y - M - E - T - A - L DEATH! DEATH! DEATH! DEATH!"
Back then when doing promotional, TV interviews and introducing they did it the same way, you can look for a long vid with all these clips of them saying this kawaii introduction. They were taught to say "th" of "death" word by bitting their tonges at the end to pronounce this the right way, but they added a wink looking like this 😜
You'll see many Japanese fans ended their sentences and comments with "death" to remember this, unlike western fans like me. Btw it's been long since they didn't that introduction and during recent interview at "Fox 5" we saw the intro once again and with MomoMetal this time
During an interview KobaMetal (the producer behind BM) said that when he was travelling for concerts abroads around 2015 he came to know a band like Ghosts and he was interested in discover that band doing the almost same thing they're were doing theatrically and artistically, so anyone thinking those bands are satanic and such they're just saying nonsenses, they're just doing a show in which they're playing a role, and in order to be convincent (like an actor in a movie film) they need to perform their part like they're mean it, and the audience must be part of it and they're an important ingredient because other way it wouldn't work. That's why we said all the time "notacult", unless you actually are or want to feel part of it. ;)
Oh and just a note aside for anyone thinking this is disrespectful to western religion and whatnot, is not! KobaMetal explained he needed to make a bridge between fans and them so they can familiarizing with the BM concept with images the fans already knew, in this case he used the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series as a drive vehicule which is heavily influenced by christianity, kabbalah, gnosticism and even islam symbolism, imagery and iconography, the plot on this was never took as a blasphemy for any religion and it was mostly used for aesthetic reasons, same for BabyMetal, it was used to represent the "Death and Rebirth" concept of SuMetal own role persona while having a bridge between fantasy and reality, the reality is she decided to end up her idol career (death) with Sakura Gakuin and commit herself to this new rol (rebirth) as a metal queen for BabyMetal.
Sorry if this sound as a rant but i just keep seeing BM fans and general people who still don't get it.
Like i said they brought back this song at PIA Arena MM and now with MomoMetal being officially part of the group and also was the intro for every setlist at the Babyklok Tour in the US and now with the EU and UK Tour. You can enjoy tons of fancams around or the live proshot at PIA Arena MM, i think NLMetal got that clip.
Anyway thanks for sharing this and see you next time 🦊🤘💀

Nice reaction, this song was used as opener for many concerts, but here it is the last song. Su-metal has been crucified in different occasions.
BTW the name of the song is "BABYMETAL DEATH", not just "DEATH".

Usually less than 30 seconds pass. Bloody hell, I love it.
And by the way, a little recommendation:
MAN WITH A MISSION×milet - 絆ノ奇跡 / THE FIRST TAKE
Wagakki Band - 焔 (Homura) + 暁ノ糸 (Akatsuki no Ito) / 1st JAPAN Tour 2015 Hibiya Yagai Ongakudo

    Translation to the opening monologue:-
    メタルの魂を守るため
    自らの命と引き換えに戦った
In order to defend the soul of the Metal,
in exchange for her own life, Su-Metal fought.
    やがて SU-METALの魂は
    紅の炎となり
    Before long, SU-METAL's soul
    became the crimson flame
    天空を紅く染めたのであった
    and dyed the sky crimson.
    だが 遠くの星が消えゆくように
However, as the distant stars go out,
    命の終焉はこの世の理なのだ
the end of life is the law of nature.
    今紅き月がSU-METALと共に燃えゆく• • •
Now the crimson moon is burning out with SU-METAL.

The Destruction Of The Statue is similar to Metallica Justice for All live concert in Mexico City, Mexico 🇲🇽.
The Japanese word "desu" (です) is a copula (= to be). The Eastern Japanese almost drop "u" of this word, so the word "desu/des" sounds like "death". And someone started writing "DEATH" instead of "です" (desu). It makes sense only where the Japanese word "desu" is expected to come. The title "BABYMETAL DEATH" means only "We are BABYMETAL." No relation to the death itself.
I'm not sure of its origin, but I saw long before such a character as a vampire or a death metal singer in a comic and all his "です" (desu) were replaced with "DEATH" to emphasize his character. With such an air, it works well. Without such an air, it probably doesn't work.
There is a genre named "Death Metal". The sound of this tune seems to fall within that genre, and the lyric writer may have put many "DEATH"s to emphasize the Death-Metal-ness. It might be alright to use many "DEATH"s without thinking of death if some of Death Metal bands also chose their style just to differentiate themselves rather than driven by the feeling about death. But I don't know the Death Metal well.
    MAKUHARI MESSE:-
Makuhari Messe (幕張メッセ) is a Japanese convention center outside Tokyo, located in the Mihama-ku ward of Chiba city, in the northwest corner of Chiba prefecture. Designed by Fumihiko Maki, it is accessible by Tokyo's commuter rail system. Makuhari is the name of the area, and Messe is a German language word meaning "trade fair".
    •Owner: Makuhari Messe, Inc.
    •Opened: 9 October 1989.
    •Expanded: October 1997.
•Classroom-style seating: 304 (International Conference Room).
    •Banquet/ballroom: 1,600 (Convention Hall).
•Theatre seating: 7,860 (Makuhari Event Hall).
Makuhari Messe is close to Tokyo Disney Resort in Urayasu, and to Chiba prefecture's black sand beaches. It is accessible from Kaihimmakuhari station on the Keiyō Line of East Japan Railway Company (JR East). The center is the host of the annual Tokyo Auto Salon (modified car show, in January), the biennial Tokyo Motor Show (in October), the annual Tokyo Game Show (video game hardware and software exhibition, in September), the annual Jump Festa (manga, anime, and video game exposition, in December), and the biannual Wonder Festival (toys, scale figures, and garage kits exposition, in February and July). The venue was host to several Nintendo Space World events.
It will be the venue for certain sports during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Imagining being at that show and they close the night like that!
Back in those days, there was always speculation and rumors that they were breaking up or replacing the lead singer.
Looking back on it, i think it was manufactured hype from their genius marketing team. But still... They killed the lead singer and the house went black. End of show.
I could feel your emotion at the end; I couldn't imagine being there live for that ...
If you get a chance to watch the Legend 1997 show start to finish, that finale will hit you even harder.

You've already gotten the 1997 connection. But another set of references in the show is to the 1997 anime feature film "Evangelion: Death & Rebirth" from Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. Indeed, Su- sings a cover of Tamashii no Refuran (Soul's Refrain), the theme from the OST. A one-off performance well worth watching.
