    1. Putting down the darn iPhone. 2. Doing what needs to be done early in the day, instead of taking time to wake up (reading blogs, watching CZcams) until far too late in the day and then cramming it all in when the family is home & needing me, which leads to not...
    3. Going to be early enough. I will be a different person if I can just get some sleep, and it's almost always my fault when I don't.

Yes! We recently cut cable and just watch Netflix or Amazon Prime on "movie nights" It makes family time more special and, O man, has it helped us get to bed way earlier! I realized how tired I was by 9pm!

Yes, I am good at wasting time on the internet! I've been practicing self discipline with my phone for a while now. I never use it while I'm out. A couple weeks ago I was at my daughter's basketball practice and looked around and I was the only parent sitting on the bleachers that wasn't staring at my phone. Seriously, the only one! I want my daughter to see me paying attention and know I want to watch her and see when she makes a basket rather than be the parent zoning out not knowing what's going on. I'm also trying to up our Art intake.. we just hung out at a couple museums on Friday. I'm thinking of making it a monthly thing along with other stuff like musical performances.. things I can take a 6 year old to.

When I get home from the office at the end of a long day, I take off my work clothes and put on some lounge clothes. I feel like I don't have time to put them away - hang them up or throw them in the hamper so I create a pile in my closet - the baby needs to be fed, dinner needs to be made, the hubby wants to snuggle. But I just need to slow down...breathe...and know that those two minutes putting away my stuff will ease a lot of stress later on. I think we feel like we don't have time to put things away b/c there are more "important" things to do, but having a messy house affects everyone. Anyone else go through this?

I find it is easier to have self-discipline if I "attach" a new habit to an old one. For example, if I want to start remembering to put lotion on my feet every day, I attach that to taking my vitamins, or brushing my teeth. If I just think "I need to put lotion on my feet" it will never happen!
To eat less sweets, it helps me to have replacement - such as a berry smoothie, an a bakes apple, or a gourmet cheese..
I struggle the most staying FOCUSED on one thing - any help you can give on that would be much appreciated. I tend to flutter every minutes from task to task fearing I'll forget to do it if I don't do it right then..but then the main task of the day doesn't get done! For example, I' m supposed to be writing thank you notes and sympathy cards RIGHT NOW, but thought I better watch the Sunday Video or I'd forget. :)

So good. It's seems counter-intuitive, but discipline actually frees us! I need discipline to sleep so I can be productive; early bed, early rise. I seem to switch on to work when everyone goes to bed. Also, healthy diet: Need discipline to prep for eating well instead of grabbing what is convenient and less healthy!

Absolutely Brilliant topic Jennifer. Presently I am de-cluttering my entire wardrobe. I am giving myself to the end of February to complete this task.. So I am good there
However,. I do a lot of research on line and I do need to limit my play time on the computer.. A must for me is to discipline my morning...No checking e-mails, reading blogs, watching video's etc, until I have accomplished my daily to do's, including home care tasks for the day, workouts and eating on a more routine schedule instead of hit and miss..
.3 pm., which is tea time for me. I can then reward myself with a 30 minute break to read a blog, check out a few video' s answer some e-mail, and finally I can set aside the few hours before dinner to do the research.. After dinner.. Only check important business emails.. Then OFF-Line..
    & since you are asking
I really need to discipline myself to drink enough water.
Daily Discipline is what creates your future... as one discipline unfolds into another.
You don't wake up one random morning and decide-. Hey.! I think I am going to dance the lead role in Swan Lake today,.
Living gracefully and elegantly is an art form.. All art forms require daily discipline..
And as I compose this uh Novel.. I am up past my bedtime.. another really bad habit. that must be disciplined.
    No Sleep, No chic....

I have to agree with Deborah. I spend too much time in the morning waking up. I am a stay at home mom to 5 homeschooled kids. I am like a different person when I wake up. I just don't think straight and all I want is coffee and to zone out with an iPad game or something. Getting up earlier doesn't work, giving myself a time limit doesn't work. It is like I don't want to get up and do what I should do. So I end up without time for make up or even a shower, or often no breakfast. Once w estate school for the day I don't have time to do lots of housework, just switching the laundry or picking up after us. If I can get a load of laundry started and have an empty dishwasher ready to fill before school starts it makes all the difference. If I don't, the house looks like a disaster at the end of the day because I can never get caught up, and I am so burnt out and fried after school is done I just want to go to bed! This is my downfall....starting my mornings right.

I can totally relate to talking negatively to my family when they don't cooperate or understand my struggles. I feel like they intentionally try to create more work for me & don't help out by caring for their own things & their own responsibilities enough. This is a wonderful series and I'm a believer in the "touch it once" philosophy, as in put the coat away when coming home, fold the clothes when the dryer goes off, go through the mail and discard, sort and distribute, etc. My one issue, and I hope you address it down the road, is also with "paper." For example, I want to save a nice quote from a couple of my daily calendars (Zen and French ones!) or there's a newspaper article I may want to ponder and then write to someone about, etc. So, I'm open to new ideas on how to tackle these hot spot areas. Also, I started reading Marie Kondo's "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up," and while I haven't started the process yet (a few drawers have been addressed), I find the idea of having a system to tidy up as a way of life to be so freeing and wonderful. That's why I enjoy your videos here, too. ^_^

I have found the beginning of the week is my downfall. I would always take Monday off in that I would do whatever I wanted on Monday. But I found that by starting my week off in such a undisciplined manor only made Tuesday much harder because I had to recover from Mondays bad decisions. Like saying up to late or making bad food choices. Then trying to recover on Tuesday meant that I have already wasted two days of my week and now I am behind on everything. I think taking moments in time to be grateful throughout the day is better then wasting long amounts of time. So it seems for me. : )

Excellent topic Jennifer! Please oh please continue with this. 🙌🏼
I would love a spin off with creating good habits in tough areas but not from a generic point of view more like a tiny baby step point of view. I find many people are so stuck in life and need those baby steps in some areas for momentum to get them started then we all know what happens when you get started.... progress can take place then that fuels you for more starting, momentum, etc. Anyway you are a deep thinker so anything you come up with in this area would be good. Man, as we make progress in self-discipline, our lives change and almost always will positively impact or inspire others as well. Win/Win ! Self-discipline in spending, wanting, our speech, food of course, being active so that we can be helpful, doing chores early, not complaining, not speaking of others weaknesses, practicing in areas you truly want change. I could go on and on. Thank you for encouraging us.

Thank you! I love your books, and the videos are spot-on. Having the self-discipline to look appropriate for the task at hand shows you have good sense of what's proper and, I believe, shows you have self-respect. People can sense that, and the logical next thought is, "hmmm, if she respects herself, she would be more likely to respect others -- that is, respect ME." win-win!

The problem I seem to have is jumping around and neglecting certain things. What I mean is, for weeks I will be into organizing, cleaning and dejunking. During this time I will neglect my sewing, my guitar practice, and exercising. Then I will get on a sewing kick and neglect everything else. I wish I could do a bit of each every day so I could keep up in each area. I am retired, so these things are what I have chosen to do with my time, but I still can't seem to get a handle on this.

You could try to clean your kitchen and wash your dishes while you're preparing your food. For example, I always empty my drying rack, clean my cutting board, knives and utensils while I'm cooking. So when I go back to the kitchen after my meal, everything is already clean, except 1 pot and the plates and utensils we used to eat. This way, I never want to leave dirty dishes, I know that with just a little more effort I'll have a clean kitchen. :)

MustardSeedish timers really help me stay on task. Especially with projects that will take many mini-sessions of work. You know - decluttering & organizing the garage or closets. They really do help with momentum. I also use the left to right rule. Lets say you are tidying the kitchen and you are "feeling" overwhelmed. I focus on a starting point and then move to the right as i make completion progress. This especially helps me when I am doing something that I am not motivated about - like painting that needs done haha. But the result of doing it is so good so we must cheer ourselves on in love and good deeds. : ) I will say the number one thing that has helped me get anything done in my house is embracing my own version of minimalism. Less stuff has great power - more than i ever thought possible.
