A coworker once gave me a lift in her car, and I thought the car was brand new, it was so spotless, but she told me it wasn’t new at all. She had had it for years. I said how do you keep it so clean? She said she never eats in it. Never. No Starbucks, no fast food, no snacks, no candy. I was amazed. So if we always eat at a table we will automatically keep our cars cleaner. Thanks for the great video!

My children are grown now but I never let them eat in the car. Recently, I took my 5 year old car to the dealership for an oil change and they said it was "showroom clean". I know I'm rather obsessive about keeping my car clean but it feels good.

My dad taught us to keep our cars clean. He’d say regardless of how much money you have or what you drive, you can keep your car clean. My husband and I don’t forbid our child from eating or drinking in our vehicles, or ourselves BUT we detail our vehicles ourselves regularly and they remain looking new. Pride in ownership. A rarity these days, but most certainly obtainable!! When I sell any car or trade, dealers are blown away. Feels good and we get a bit more too.

Now as a mother and Christian I have over come a lot of my old ways. However, I think it is important to be reminded and have tools to be better. I have learned a lot from watching your channel. About the clean car. I have five kids and I made a rule that everyone (including myself) must take ALL ITEMS out of the car as we arrive at home. No exceptions. Also no eating in the car (unless on a long road trip). Consider the safety factor. Lose items become dangerous projectiles and small children make choke on food. Choking is silent! You might not even notice. Be safe, keep your car clean ❤️

As a former high school teacher, I was appalled at how students were encouraged to eat in the hallways. When the bell rang, students often set the food in the hallway to be trampled on and for custodians to pick up. I never got used to it. It hurt my heart not only because of the disrespect toward the food and the workers, but for the lack of self-respect it insinuated.

If I am running errands and have accumulated some trash before I get home, I will drop it in any receptacle that is on my last stop. Or I will put everything that is not for the car, including trash, into one of the shopping bags I’m taking out of the car anyway and sort it when I am unpacking the bags. Having a little OCD helps but it’s a habit that can be easily learned.

Thank you for all the elegance tips. As a person who is learning so much from you, but at the same time (maybe this is oversharing) am learning that I am probably a very high functioning autistic woman, I can say that for all my life I have struggled to make eye contact and at the same time be able to concentrate on what the other person is saying. Eye contact can feel so intense and so intimate. I agree that eye contact is important because some people will not further their engagement with someone who is struggling. Someone with autism may come across creepy because they are so aware of this problem and may be trying too hard to give eye contact. You do not need to have perfect eye contact to be a good listener or have interesting things to say. It is hard to keep trying when we feel repeatedly dismissed for this. So my tip, always try to be patient and kind, you may not share or fully understand another person's struggles.

Recently, I bought a box that's made for frozen grocery items (I live in FL). Since I don't always need to use the box, but it's in the car, I stashed all the stuff that used to be randomly thrown into the back seat, into this box. On watching your language, I was raised in a swearing house but have tried to cut out all curses the last couple of years too. I found having go to clean phrases for my most commonly used swears was helpful. But then next step is refrain from exclaiming altogether. I used to "Jesus Christ" and "Come the f*** on" all the time as expressions of frustration or incredulity. So step one was saying substitutes like "geez" or "seriously?" Step two is not vocalizing in an exasperated manner at all. It's remarkable at how much controlling your words actually betters situations and prevents you from being huffy.

This way I always feel secured & prepared because I have all the things I “might” need with me or in my car at all times & still be polished in my presentation ☺️👍

I love the reminder about keeping your car clean (and your purse). It got so difficult for me that I made these changes:
    - I try to schedule “a date” with our family car once every 1-2 months to declutter it, and take it through a car wash and to use the huge vacuum hoses that can get dirt, bark, pebbles, crumbs, from under seats and inside car seats.
    - We keep a small trash bag in the car in the front seat and I take it out regularly. It’s really helpful to immediately throw away used tissues, napkins, wrappers, old receipts
    - I keep a little wicker basket in the car. We have a van now with our 4 kids, and I was tired of cleaning up random toys, kicked-off shoes, baby items, and other random things that we like in the car but don’t have a place for them. Having a “catch-all” basket in my car has made it SO much easier to keep it clean. I still have to Declutter it frequently but now I don’t have to carry as much in my diaper bag (amen!) because I have the backups I need in the car basket. When I tidy up the car quickly, I can just put anything that is on the floor into the basket.
    - I now rotate between 4 purses (often depending on my outfit) and this helps me keep my purse organized and decluttered. I keep a lot of items in clear bags (like those cheap, clear makeup “jelly purse” bags you can get at Walmart) and so I can easily move my necessities from one bag to the other. When I was younger I used to use Ziplocs for this purpose but now I use little bags, so very little is loose in my purse.
    - I set a time to tidy, restock, and organize my diaper bag BEFORE I go anywhere. I find if it’s nicely organized beforehand then I’m not frantically throwing extra things into our car, and having a respected diaper bag helps me keep the car more clean.

Here in France and most of Europe, if we have to place our cutlery down while still eating, we never place them in the way you did in your video. We place the fork on the plate in the 7 or 8 position of a clock face and the knife on top at 4 or 5 position on clock face. It's very interesting to observe different behaviours.

Keeping a clean car (and handbag), not being rushed, and sitting down to eat are all things that have gotten much more difficult for me since having children! But they’re all so important.
I appreciated that you included not using curse words. That’s something my husband and I both find very distasteful, but it seems as though it’s becoming more commonplace, even in a work environment.
I know you said the list wasn’t comprehensive, but along with watching what you say, gossiping is something that for me, once someone does, I view them in a different light. And it puts me in a very uncomfortable position when someone starts gossiping to me, because I personally don’t share information with others about others that I wouldn’t share in front of the person we’re talking about. So at times I will address the fact that it’s gossip head-on or other times, I just don’t engage and change the subject, but either way, it can be an awkward time. I don’t want to be associated as a gossip, nor do I want my opinion to change about someone else based on personal information someone has divulged that may or may not be true. Do you have advice on how to elegantly respond when someone is gossiping to you and you want to kindly make it clear you are interested?

Loved this one! Great reminders, especially the one on not over-reacting. You're so right, there is nothing elegant about flying off the handle! I love your necklace today too...actually, your whole ensemble and look is gorgeous!

Another lovely video, Jennifer. : ) One strategy I have found helpful for both creating an air of mystery and keeping a tidy work station is to completely de-personalize my cubicle at work. There are only practical, work-related items at my desk, and I have had many people comment on how "boring" it is, but I find it much better for working and being more mysterious. : ) I would also add "speaking lower and slower" to being well spoken. All of the loveliest conversationalists in my life speak with a more controlled and measured pace, and a "lower register/tone at the front of the mouth" (if that makes sense!). It is so pleasing to the ear. Voice lessons are definitely on my list of avenues to explore this year. : ) Thank you again for the encouragement!

Hi Jennifer, What a great video! All the tips are excellent (I am going to go clean out our car right now! LOL!!) but I especially love the tip about staying calm. The movie Remains of the Day has so many examples about learning how to stay calm. I highly recommend it. And I am so thrilled to hear you recommend to avoid using curse words. I can't stand curse words! Thank you so much for all you do and share - you are definitely the picture of elegance! Love, Mary
