this video has made me realize how truly lucky and privileged I am. There’s thousands of people dying from war and here I am in my house wearing warm clothing, able to eat, and I am celebrating holidays with my loved ones, truly beyond thankful 🙏
We have people dying of hunger,
we have people sleeping under the interstate overpass,
and we have Elon Musk walking around with 250 BILLION dollars. 76 years from now, our great great grandchildren will look back at 2023 and ask "How did they let that happen?! Couldn't they do SOMETHING?"

Every year it's harder and harder to watch them, so many emotions from all these events
I know the video is compiled in a way that reminds us that even with a loss, there is always hope, but with the tragedies and loss of that year being that severe, I can't help but feel a bit hopeless.
The years before 2020 just feels like another era with how much has change and will change in the future.
This is why I tell my students who are the same age I was when 9/11 happened that 2020/Covid will be their 9/11, the time they realize everything shifted and history isn't just something we study, it's still happening.

School really makes a difference how I perceive the year. My Social Studies teacher from last year talked about the earthquakes in Syria and Turkey. That feels like 2022, but it was 2023. I can't believe it, really.
These videos honestly always make me wanna change the world, make me wanna support what I believe in, but I know I'm too young to do very much. I can't go to protests. I can't do a whole lot. These videos also make me realize how lucky I truly am. I'm not scared for my life everyday, although I do live in the US, where school shootings often happen. But that's nothing compared to what others across the world have been going through. I'm so lucky to live this life that I do, yet I don't even realize it half the time. These videos nearly bring me to tears, and thank you for bringing us such a detailed yet compact video full of wild events.
You're alert, intelligent, and have lots of time ahead. Get out there and change the world, kid.
as emotional as these yearly videos get me, they also make me have a moment of realization that my life is nowhere near as bad as so many others in this world, quite honestly i am privileged. i think its important to watch these for that reason. not only as an eye opener, but to remind those of us who are privileged, that we shouldn't take it for granted.

Not saying there aren't problems, but their job is to make you feel bad about the world
I think you can do a video like this on almost any year, especially in the last century or so and make it seem just as bad or worse. There’s always going to be problems across the world and you can’t prevent it. When they compile it into a 7 minute video you start to realize just how long 1 year is. These types of videos are also supposed to make you feel bad like the other person said, because it just seems like all these problems are happening at once.

2024 MOST LIKELY BE WORST YEAR TO COME. YOU WILL SEE.
I was born in 1975. Judging by some comments, a lot of people are saying that so much more happens these days, and things are looking bleaker and bleaker every year - but remember that we're spoonfed news and world events through our devices all day to drive engagement. I watched footage of the Turkish earthquake for hours, I followed the Israel attack and J6 live. In decades past, you'd just have the evening news and the paper the next day - not a limitless deluge of content on demand. Just as much is happening today as it did back in the 80's and 90's. The threat to democracy and climate change are my biggest concerns.
This is actually a rly good way of putting it. We forget that we have constant new access all day. Before it was much more moderated (& probably more mentally healthy tbh)
same worries here. NATO is more important now than it's been in 80 years and we're starting to get used to the world just being on fire for part of the year. it's scary
Yes, and we have access to smaller stories of individuals half a world away... hearing their tragedies, etc. So we are absorbing the pain on a global scale. We are taking in more and more pain and awfulness than we used to. If something happens to a child on the other side of the planet, we know all the minutiae of the case and take on the worry and fear as if we were their neighbor. On one hand, it's good to know and care about communities far outside our own... but seeing the events unfold in real-time in a constant stream makes it seem so much worse than before. Awful things have happened forever, but now we know about all of them and take on the weight that that brings.
True, they say that today, a far greater percentage of the world's population lives in peace than at any time before in history despite how things may look on the news.
born in 2005 and the comments make me wonder if people really litsened to their history teachers.

2023 felt like a recap of all of 2020 and 2021. Those two yrs felt so slow yet scary,, everyone sitting at home, getting to spend time with themselves or their family or pets and now 2023 was in contrary a confusing and loud year. A year where no one was sitting around, there was just a lot happening
Opposite for me.
How about 2022?
Everything has been going so fast since 2020
I was sitting around still
Its fascinating and strange at how one feels the year has just gone by without much happening . but so so much happened ...
Excellent editing job Vox team!
Not the easiest year, but nothing can be worse than 2020. Fortunately, all of us have a hope that 2024 will be better. We can do this!

This year has a lot of dark moments but I love how the video still shows great moments from the year. Hope next year will be better
There was zero to none " great moments " in the video. Especially laughable was " Taylor's Swift and Beyonce concetts boosting economy of U.S" as it has ANY meaning to the World itself. All that is there is War in one region, Semi-War in other regions, forest fires, earthquakes and England New King sitting in a crown speaking about how he will make live better for the " other folks".
We say this every year
@@Scell_we can’t give up, we need to fight to make things better
The thought of war its selfs makes me cry sometimes i imagine myself in it
Every second matters, every minute every hour every day every month …. Matters and it’s amazing how much happens in such a short time
Thanks for showing some of the wins of the year at the end, reminding us of all the good that has happened, and all the positivity that exists. It's so important, it cannot even be put into words.

That is the most journalistic video I've seen. Absolutely covering everywhere, not just focusing on the USA, but acknowledging other regions and randomly throwing in references to tv, video games, and other media. Very well done
it’s still very US pov
I hope this is sarcasm😂😂
but this is mainly about the us tho
For all the fear monger about China 24/7 in Western media, they didn't cover a single event in China.
does anyone know where the speech that starts at 7:24 is from? would love to hear it in full but I can’t find it anywhere
This year wasn't bad 8/10
