Being a Canadian whose husband has spent 36 years in the Military with 8 overseas tours, two of which were 1 year long posting to Afghanistan, I was moved to tears to hear you thank Canada for liberating your grandfather and for taking care of him till he was able to return to his family. The remembrance makes the sacrifice these courageous men made all the more worth while

Hi Stephanie. I am a Canadian currently residing in USA. I grew up in Canada. My Grandfather served in 2 wars, was a pow and survived them both. We call in Remembrance Day and still wear the poppies (representing Flanders Field). Here in the USA they call it Veteran's Day. I still take a few moments on each Nov 11 to pray and thank God for all those that fought for our freedom. Thank you and Ian for suggesting the 2 minutes of silence.
In the Netherlands its the 4th of may, there is a national moment of silence, its to remember the dead. On the 5th of may its libation day and its one huge party celebratng freedom! There are many different ways people celibate, military ceremonies, giant parties.....
Hi from Flanders here, on September 4th 1944, Canadians spearheaded the Liberation of my city, Antwerp. One month later Canadian units liberate the northern districts of the city and the port of Antwerp, allowing supply lines for the allied forces. We salute Canada and remember what they have done for us.
As a British born Canadian I love wearing a poppy.....with pride.....the tradition of the poppy.....started after the First World War...by widows of soldiers...as a way to make money to support their children...as not a lot of work was available to women make then...and it has continued .....a lovely tradition....
Yes, we have our solemn ceremonies as well as our national celebrations in the US for our military.
We typically honor our soldiers @ pro & college football🏈 games too, but attendance to sporting events has been seriously curtailed in 2020 by the C19 pandemic😷 & lockdown.
💮It is good to remember our allies too, esp. in WWII. It would've been even more grim if we had not been able to defeat our enemies & also defend us against fascism.
Thank you to Ian and Lalande for acknowledging Remembrace Day. I am Canadian; my Great Grandmother lost four of her sons. It is important to take a few moments for those who have been involved, served and lost in the turmoil of the world.

She had five sons and three daughters, the eldest was my Nanny. I'm sure every family felt loss; a complete generation or two and their potential lost.

Stephanie I would just like to thank you. I do not often comment on videos as I never know what to say but as the daughter of a Canadian soldier, I would like to say thank you for the respectful opening on the video. Your videos have been an important part of my mental health during isolation and seeing the thoughtful moment at the beginning of this video really touched my heart.
It was touching and thoughtful. Which is what keeps so many coming back. Stephanie and her family are what we call "good people" in my neck of the woods
I work for the Canadian Department of Veterans Affairs and your opening brought me to tears. My grandfather served in the Navy and my grandmother was a war bride from Ireland. I feel very fortunate to serve all our Veterans, including many Allied Veterans who later moved to Canada. I've had a wonderful career planning overseas events and escorting many SWW Canadian Veterans to France, The Netherlands, Italy and Belgium to reunite them with their friends, to be honoured for their achievements, and to remember those who never returned. Where I live, everything closes down for Remembrance Day so people can attend the ceremonies. This year was very hard for us all, the weather was warm and sunny, but our dear Veterans had to stay home and ceremonies were downscaled to avoid spreading COVID-19. I am sorry to hear your grandfather was a POW. Those who were captured in Asia suffered beyond measure. I would be interested to know which Canadian regiment liberated his camp? Thank you for remembering.

This is Veterans Day in the USA. I have many veterans in my family. This is an important day for us. Greetings of peace to all those families who have lost loved on in the various wars and battles around the globe. Let,s pray for a day when disputes will be settled without warfare.

Absolutely. My grandfather was at the Battle of Somme, aged just 20, suffered mustard gas attacks,and took his life twenty years after discharge. It really affected my dad, as well as he coped and gave us all a beautiful life. I think more women in charge of countries will result in fewer terrible wars and all the devastation they cause.
My great grandfather fought WW1 and both my grandfathers fought WW2 in Greece. During Nazi occupation one of them was a resistance fighter in the mountains. Poor little dear, his butt cheeks were full of sharpnels. God rest their souls. May we never have to go through this again.
It’s called Remembrance Day in Canada. It’s meaningful to me as my dad was part of D Day where he was wounded and returned to Britain to recover. 🇨🇦
Every year on Veterans Day I post photos of my favorite veterans: my grandfather and his older brother, US Army, WWI and my dad, US Navy WWII. We grew up knowing the stories of family and friends who served in the Armed Forces, including those who died in the service of their country.

Thank you for observing Armistice Day, which in Canada we call Remembrance Day. My maternal grandfather served in WWII in the Canadian Provost Corp (military police) in Europe for 6 years.

My Canadian grandfather was a veteran of WW1. He fought in France at the Battle of Hill 70 in August 1917 and he was deafened by a nearby shell burst. He lived to a ripe old age and did not die until I was 6 years old, so I have one or two nice memories of him. Thank you for a Remembrance Day portion of this video!
My Grandfather was in the second world war. He was a Canadian soldier who was part of a regiment that liberated Holland from the Germans. He told us many stories. Some very sad. He went back to Holland many times after the war to a special celebration of that liberation. He had fond memories of that. He's gone now and I miss him. 🇨🇦
My Canadian dad was part of Holland’s liberation too and I miss him as well.
My husband is a Canadian soldier. I’m very proud of him. The beginning of your video really moved me. Thank you for that. We call it Remembrance Day in Canada. Unfortunately he’s away working across Canada and we couldn’t pay our respects together like usual. With everything going on lock down I’m scared he’ll be stuck there. My mom is in Montreal. It was a nice tribute @ the opening. In the 🇺🇸US, we tend to pay biggest tribute to current & former soldiers on 🔴Memorial Day & 🔴Veterans Day. No matter where in the world🌐, we need to remember their 👨✈️sacrifice & service👩✈️.

What a lovely story about your grandfather! My Grandfather fought at Dunkirk, survived the Blitz and served 2 tours in Italy fighting Mussolini. After it was all over, he moved to Canada and that's where we were all born! Love to hear how all the allied countries supported one another during the war!

I feel very privileged to be a Canadian living in Canada and I am also very proud that my father fought in the second world war and spent a lot of his time in France especially Falaise right after D-Day. So I just wanted to thank you again for your acknowledgement of Canada and to rest of the soldiers who fought so that I for one could be here to typing this message. Stephanie.... About 3 month ago there was a video in the dining room and the China pantry was brought up. There was talk about carrying all the china for a table dressing from the pantry and leaving the sets used most in that corner closet you now have. I thought why? With the BROCANTES, Selmar why not come up with a china cart? Do they make them? Once the pattern is decided on place settings, glassware, linens etc can be loaded and rolled into the dining room to dress the table. Compartments can be built for plates and glasses so items don't break. Think of it like a mini sideboard on wheels.

Thank You! Remembering the War to End All Wars on Armistice Day is so important. Of course it did not end all wars, but taking a moment to offer remembrance was wonderful. Here in the United States we live in a constant state of historical deprivation. I had to remind our neighbor--who is a very modern and advanced single dad, just what Armistice Day is marking. Despite being really smart and nearly 45 he was completely ignorant of Armistice was commemorating. Sad. Tsk, tsk... we're such a young country.
When things bring me down, I take a break and watch Chateau Diaries to get me up on the happy side of the world again. Thank you Stephanie. You don’t know how much positivity you bring into my life.

A Couple of years (2017 & 18) my Husband ( Dutch) & I did a Tour of all the War monuments in France & Belgium. Just wanted to do it before my Dad had passed away this year at 100. It was very up lifting & emotional at some of the Grave sites in these countries.
How lovely to hold an Armistice Day ceremony. My nephew, dad, grandpa, and several cousins, aunts, and uncles served in the US and Canadian military and each Veterans Day we share photos of them and remember them for their service.
Even the darkest times move on.... Your channel has certainly been a catalyst for me in that regard. Many thanks and graditude for my Veteran family members and friends as well as all of yours, they served for a debt that can never be repaid. 💖
Thank you so much, Stephanie, for beginning with honoring Armistice Day. My great uncle Athol Church died in France a month before 11 November 1918. I treasure the Gold Star flag that was given to his mother and display it always. My father James Church was a skinny little 19 year old tail gunner and was part of the Bloody Hundredth (so named because so many were killed) stationed in the American Air force base near Cambridge, England. His plane The Arkansas Rambler flew 24 missions over Germany, including Bremen, where some of my dearest friends live. We agree with the words of German artist Koethe Kollwitz’s famous poster: NIE WIEDER KRIEG ( never again war).
I loved the Remembrance Day tribute and the ringing of the bell, it was all so touching. It was lovely too that you mentioned your grandfather, we owe so much to our veterans, so, so , much. I am happy it was Canadians that cared for him and brought his health back❤️. I never heard of celeriac, I will have to google!😁
November 11 at 11AM we celebrate Veteran's Day where we honor all who severed their country. We have a Ceremony in the Town I live in and being Woman Veteran of the US Army, I patriciate each year. We always read the poem "On Flanders Field". It's wonderful to see your dedication to those who served the UK and France.

canadians are notoriously kind and polite. I am glad the liberated your grand papa, without him there'd be no "you" .
My faves are the trips to the brocante, the dance parties... and most of all anything to do with style, including the historical explorations of certain stylistic trends and how they evolved or decorating a previously unfinished room etc.
Have Selmar give a big bag of sawdust to Dan to dig the faded dahlia bulbs to overwinter in the greenhouse so you have more of all the gifted ones to divide and replant for next spring. They become like old friends who come to visit each year.
You know, Stephanie there is this thing called laser cleaning that does no damage but removes dirt, rust ect, from objects, buildings , statues. It might be great for the chapel and stone around LaLande.

Did Chateau de Boismorond have the same architects as Lalande when it was rebuilt? Maybe thats why the plans were there?
It does look simular to Lalande. It has the same feel and stones.

I love the China cabinet ideas!! Yes put them with enclosed doors to keep them from getting dusty. My Grandmother had a fabulous china pantry in her historic home in VA. It was not a place I was allowed to explore much but always thought how beautifully organized it all was. Yes all your lovely things need it. Excited to see how it comes along.

Windowed cupboards would be best to keep off dust. May I suggest aslo making small framed pictures to sit on top of or next to the plates that show the pattern, to minimise rummaging around and accidental chips

With all the new lighting and spotlighting systems, I suggest meeting with City Hall and/or Power & Light company and inform them that the Lalande chateau brings in a lot of tourists, as well as promoting nearby towns etc., and ask for a better monthly RATE in order to cut your bill. If you show them how all the events, that occur at the chateau, they may give you a better rate. You won't know if you don't ask. I think they will agree. Go for it.
That is very good advice. I was also thinking that the electricity bill could increase by a lot from now on. Always worth applying for financial support, as the whole area will enjoy more business through the brave and keen owners of these old and neglected buildings..
Rather interesting and amusing to think of an absentminded architect of the 19th century stopping by LaLande and forgetting the plans for his next appointment. Ay, mon dieu! (slaps hand to forehead)! :)

The dahlias are so lovely. My mother, who will 95 in November, was a talented gardener and raised dahlias for years. One of my favorite pictures from my childhood is the one where Mom is holding me and we are surrounded by dahlias, each bloom the size of a dinner plate.
Where I live now has a wonderful city garden park where roses and dahlias of all types are grown. A special fence had to be erected around the site as the local white-tailed deer thought the garden was their favorite fast food place. Best wishes from the Pacific Northwest.
The courtyard is looking stunning and on another completely different note the woman doing the hair color is doing a fabulous job. After never having gold in my hair I switched hairdressers and I now have gold highlights. How I wish I had Marie and Stephanie’s highlight color. Sigh 😞
Hi there what a beautiful story, my father-in-law was polish and was marched at age 16 a to Siberian concentration camp w family...English rescue, joined the 8th legion was after war given the choice to go to Canada..he did, thus my wife was born free w our two girls and now 4 grandchildren...god bless all the veteran’s on this special day...
my great uncle died in ww1 he was 19 ... war is an evil , my village remeberance has a lot of my family surnames and for sure they were relations , its one of these areas we are all inter related , sorta , how many people must die for greed and that is after all the truth of war , its all about greed , i give thaks to my great uncle for making the world a safer place but he should not have died , especialy at 19 , he was not even leagally a man then

Thank you for your comment and your uncle is not forgotten. I'm thinking of my grandfather fighting in France and returning to Canada to marry my grandmother. He was a kind, gentle man as I remember who suffered terribly the rest of his life because of that horrible war. His two daughters, one my mother, were so proud of him as are his six granddaughters and all his great grandchildren. And the circle goes on. I know from my mother that besides damaged lungs, he suffered from survivors' guilt and as we now know, ptsd.
I too had a very young great uncle who died at the Somme two months after the start of the war. He is buried in the Somme war cemetery. Such a sad waste of young lives. ❤️

Awwwwwh Stephanie thank you for your mention and thanks to Canada 🍁 I am a Canadian (born to a British Mother - just saying) and this means so much to me. You know as awful as it is, it was both WWl and II that defined Canada as a Nation separate from our Colonial British roots. Canadians developed a reputation as being creative and resourceful soldiers who used their brains and bravery on the battlefield. But most importantly Canadian soldiers were kind and respectful to the civilian populations they both came in contact with and liberated. Thank you so much for your wonderful videos and thoughtful presentation of history. Lest we forget. 💐💌🦚

I recommend a sort of shadow box type covering for those fountain lights. It will take the ability to see the brightness of the light at the source away and only flood the area with the colors. Use scrap wood and just create a small housing like you would for a sprinkler you don't want hitting a section of a structure or car area. A type of shield to take that brightness off your eyes when looking at the fountain. It will still light up and be so beautiful but without starring into a bulb.
I just love how almost every video shows progress. Making the Beautiful even more Beautiful. The drafted plans from the 1860’s of the other Chateau was an amazing find.
I cannot get enough of LaLande videos. It helps soothes my blue American nerves. Your lovely chapel and the services that you do fill me with some kind of faith. And that’s a good thing. Thanks you for sharing and giving us such gifts every week. 💙

We call it Remembrance Day in Australian and at 11am on the 11th month play the last post .A lot of work places , clubs, shops ,schools etc stand for a minute silence to remember our war dead .
From a proud Canadian, you are welcome!! Just found your vlog recently and binging videos from the first video to now. I can return the sentiment, my father served in the Canadian Army during WW2 from 1941 thru 1945. He was billeted to a kind, generous, wonderful family in England as he was an officer. Dad always said he was treated like family having spent several months with them. During the war they wrote home to my mother and once dad returned safely they continued to send letters and gifts on birthdays and Christmas. They too were forever grateful for the Canadians serving in Europe. So nice that all these years later I can hear how grateful you are to Canada and I can say we too are grateful for the strong, wonderful people of England for embracing our soldiers, opening their homes during such a desperately, fearful time.

As soon as you started showing photos of china pantry ideas, I recognized Bunny’s right away! It’s been my dream to have one as well. I do plan on glass fronted cabinets and would recommend you do the same. There’s enough to do around there without having to dust the china regularly! Kay’s energy in organizing is enviable. I sure wish I had it!

Another Canadian. We absolutely remember both wars. My families hail from Norway and Scotland; my grandmother would never have met my grandfather if the War hadn't happened. Every Remembrance Day I reflect on that reality, how dramatically our collective world shifted. I've had relatives who'd fought in the two wars. My great-uncle was in a German POW camp, and was liberated by the British. As a Canadian of British descent, I express my immense gratitude to Britain for the burdens she shouldered.

if you have heat in the flower studio the flowers will wilt n die quicker as the cold will keep there blooms longer, just a thought

Yes exactly so, flowers needs a cold room, good for storing other things too.
You actually need the temperature between 6-8 to keep Flowers ok with air flow
If you leave fresh flower in the stable’s in the harsh winter the water in the stems Freezes and white flowers will go brown
The fire will be fine as it’s difficult to work in such cold conditions and I’m sure it will be far enough away.

The 11th of November at 11am is when we too pause here in Australia on what is called Remembrance Day. We remember and give thanks to all who served and are currently serving. I always thought Remembrance Day was a day that countries within the Commonwealth all took part in.

Cat is BRILLIANT in so many ways and celeriac for the cottage pies has me drooling. I didn't even know it existed until my first visit to La Belle France, when my Amie treated me to dinner in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. I thought it was mashed potatoes and when I put it in my mouth I was transported to Heaven. This is not something you can buy in Hawaii but someday I will have it again before I die. I miss watching the live videos like I used to at the beginning of lockdown! Stephanie and all of lalande add such warmth to my heart. Not sure if anyone else mentioned this but the dining room chandelier would look great by adding a chain sleeve (the gathered fabric over chain)! Lots of love!
