    Third option....Only have steps at the doors going onto the garden at the doors. IE floor level the same across the entire room. Lovely to step up into the garden.

    • @beehill1
      @beehill1 Před 3 lety +17

      I think Stephanie said on a previous vlog that the floor needs to be raised otherwise the windows will be too high to see out of. It would be a shame not to be able to look out onto the chapel and lawns.

    • @lisakilmer2667
      @lisakilmer2667 Před 3 lety +8

      My thoughts exactly. Multiple floor levels will really restrict how the room can be used - and it's not very big to start with.

      Correction, as pointed out here in a comment, the floor needs to be raised by 60 cm to see out of windows and be level with chapel, lake, french door side of the apartment. Fourth Option... As Average step height is 20cm, on entering apartment from courtyard, step up 2 steps inside the door. From there have one floor level across the entire apartment. On the lake side have one step up to the exterior. You can make the steps a feature with beautiful tiles or not. Speaking as a South African, those multi-level floors really don’t work and will undermine the lovely spacious rooms synonymous with chateau’s.

      In my parent's country home, there was a long narrow butler's pantry (10 ft X 20 ft). One side had a sink with cabinets for crystal and the other side had the china/silver area. All the doors above the silver drawers were mahogany sliders with beveled glass inserts that reached the 18/20 ft ceilings. Even after 100 years, they worked perfectly and very little effort was needed to open them. Along the ceiling was a brass rail that at one time was the track for a ladder but that was long gone. If we had regular doors, no one could move in the Butler's Pantry when they were open.

    Having designed and built several kitchens over a too many years to think about, all "upper" cabinets are 12" deep. This accommodates most china (plates), saucers, cups and bowls. That would accommodate all but large charger plates and things like tureens and platters. Make deeper cabinets (18") at the ends of the room to house those items. Make all cabinets 8 feet tall or whatever the length of your plywood in France. Make all the boxes (cabinets) two or three feet wide to accommodate two or three plates in width. Use glass in all the doors because you will never remember what's behind them all and split the doors in the middle (of the height) so you have four foot tall doors. Lastly, have the cabinets what is called "line bored", or hanger holes drilled every inch or so in order to conserve vertical space. You only need two or three inches over the china to get your hands in so you can add lots of shelves. You also want to be certain the shelves are heavy enough so they won't sag under the weight. This should allow sufficient room for your "stop sign" table in the center. On another note, I would spend a few bucks and have two small signs made for the bottom of the columns at the front entry that say something to the effect of "No Trucks Bigger than Ian's". That poor little bridge is going to just give up the ghost at some point. "Four cent's worth". Jack La Forge

    Stephanie, when you said recently about Anna’s bijoux facade being added simply to bring joy. It reminded me of the painting by your Father in the Marquis’ apartment. It is a beautiful joyful huge colourful painting full of beautiful flowers and happy people ,but not in his preferred style. You told me it was done especially in that style for the residents of your parents care home for people with dementia and he did it especially in that style because he knew it was something that would bring them joy. I think this is such a generous kind and skillful thing for him to have done and his intention of bringing joy shines through in the work. It shows what a kind, sensitive man he was and how he must have had such empathy for the vulnerable people in his care. It is such an example of what you have said about your parents belief that people with dementia should still be able to experience beauty and beautiful things.The clients were unlucky to have dementia but so lucky to be in a home run by your excellent parents. I do hope one day that painting or a copy of it can be seen more widely by people who love beauty and need or value joy in their lives.

    don't sacrifice cabinet depth for your octagon. you can always put a countertop along one wall of cabinets,. A center narrow cabinet with a drop leaf on one side would also give you a table top surface to try china and linens. bonus: you could make it table height! that octagon would be fabulous in a dressing room/closet if it doesn't fit in the china room. Welcome back Cat!

  • @Rosa7388

    KAT'S BACK! YAY!
    Also, on the china pantry space issues: perhaps you could make a recessed area in the cabinetry that is narrower than the rest of the cabinetry and stores the china that is mostly display china that does get used often?
    By the way, the moment I saw those two labs I knew a chicken was going to get bitten. I had my black lab for only 3 days before she hunted down a pigeon and she was only 3 months old back then.
