Iris' theme is really uplifting. It's not super hype in the traditional sense, but it really captures the grandeur of the event. Gets me pumped just as much as a more intense theme.
I can agree there, at first Iris' theme was meh to me but it quickly grew to be one of my favorite champion themes along with HGSS Lance and Cynthia's theme, I love the rainbow road-esque feel it has

This is why gen 5 rules. Being ambitious and making subversions paid off. Iris’ status as Champion encapsulates the gen 5 design philosophy in itself, as not only is she a little village girl that doesn’t seem as intimidating as champs before her, but her theme isn’t daunting or suspenseful like theirs and instead it’s high-spirited and dynamic. And is that not how gen 5 defined itself, by how high-spirited and dynamic it was?

Yeah, if he wanted to go for dramatic final battle beatdown themes, he should’ve reviewed N’s final battle theme since he was meant to be the Champion of the main story and had the same role characters like Blue did, beating the Pokémon League before you as the new Champ. Ghetsis’s theme also doesn’t count because he’s the evil team leader and his battle was meant to be a surprise to blindside you afterwards.
Alder's battle theme is indeed the worst but if we look at his encounter theme whenever he pops up... I'd lay my DS down for quite a while not doing anything as his encounter theme was just fantastic

I very much disagree on Alder's ranking. He's not supposed to be this massive pillar that's challenging your strength, he's testing your love of pokemon and your team. He's a sage old man that cares for fun and compassion, and I think that's vert well reflected in his theme.

Same. It's the best in my opinion. The Sun & Moon version not UsUm. I don't have that game but hearing the champion theme from this video and not hearing the epic Pokémon Theme leitmotif just takes the epicness of the battle being the finale out of it.
I think he completely missed the point of SnM's theme, its not any champion theme, its YOUR champion theme, its the Players theme. In US UM, when your champion title is being challenged, what theme do you think plays when others come to fight you? The same theme. YOU are the champion in that game.
The Sun and Moon theme is your theme because when you fight the Prof you've already won, he isn't the Champ YOU are the champ. It's more of a victory ovation for you rather than a battle theme.

It's interesting to hear the opinions of non-musician about the music in the games. Because he doesn't appreciate added intricacies and ear candy that a musician would. (10 year running musician here). For example, he rates Lances RBG Theme A-Tier even though it was extremely limited by its time, and then rates the revamped obviously superior B2/W2 Theme lower than it.

I think the SuMo one needs context to it as well. You, as someone new to the region and went on a journey nobody else in the world has, has managed to make it this far, as the first champion. This is *Your theme*, which near the end has more traditional-hawaiian sounding drums, which adds to the "You came to alola." in the theme
@Inksurgence it stems from the fact the most games have a 4 letter Abbreviation. SwSh, HGSS, B2W2, USUM, ORAS, etc.
Can't agree with Kukui's placing. His theme's like something you hear from a graduation ceremony. He's commemorating you for becoming the first champion of Alola through battle as the person who came up and created the Alolan pokemon league. That to me is symbolic and should belong in S or at least high-mid A tier

I really loved it too. The way Kukui was a surprise ”champion” and the battle and music starts like a big battle in the anime (the classic battle music from the original series), just brings a huge smile on my face everytime I hear it.
To me it was perfect final battle theme, it had that hype in it while also bringing a lot of nostalgia to me (thanks to that beginning) which was amazing because it was the 20th aniversary game. Just perfect.
Hau’s champion theme lost this even though there is the same hype opening, but that theme was great for other more basic reasons. Kukui’s theme was special.
Yeah lol, reading chat and listening to his criticism made me cringe. There all talking about how it doesn’t fit a battle against the champion despite the whole point literally being that you’re the 1st champion. Kukui isn’t the champion, that’s what you are going to be. It’s YOUR theme.

For Alder, I feel that his battle isn't like other champion battles. It isn't the fight to end all fights, it's just for fun. His theme is literally just build up, it leads nowhere in particular. He's just happy to get to battle you.

Injustice for not including N's Champion theme
The Sun and Moon theme is one that feels fun and congratulatory because you, the protagonist, made it to the top. But it also feels nostalgic in the sense that has we heard bits of this theme in a few of the Sun and Moon trailers and to hear it as the champion theme was a welcome surprise. If you listen to just the song it has an intro that might be a bit long but it leads up to something really great, something unique something you could call your own. USUM champion is similar except I feel like it's a shared theme with you, the protagonist, and Hau. Both really good themes that deserve B tier at least.
The moment that Steven's theme came on I wanted to play Ruby and Sapphire.

It’s not Kukui’s theme. It’s yours. You beat the Elite Four, Kukui is only there because you need to do a Champion battle(you’re the champion)

Edit: Kukui's theme felt appropriate because he wasn't actually a champion. There wasn't a champion. It was basically a victory lap, and the music reflects that. Kukui was just there to set up the tradition of the champion battle
I agree with you. But in all actuality, you were the champion in SM and Kukui was your first title defense. I love this them because it's YOUR theme. It just makes it great.
If i could give a music a champion theme in pokemon sun and moon it would be red and blue from battle tree or gladion's theme. These are the best battle themes in the game unless you count the elite four theme

Whenever I listen to Iris's theme, it brings a smile to my face, it my favourite champion theme out of all of them.

I love Alder's theme, S tier for me, but I think the problem was that he wasn't battled at the time you'd normally face the champion, and so his whole presence was just a bit meh once you finally got there in the post game
Alder theme is really bad. He has nothing going on for him and since you encountered him just as the champion, there is nothing menacing or meaningful about him. He is also one of the weakest champions to date and even in the anime they had him being Cynthia's bitch.

He was definitely a champion, ironically he was probably the most unique character too because you battle him multiple times in the story and he ends up beating alder, only person you ever face that many times who ends up beating the champion is blue, but blue wanted to be the best trainer while N wanted what was best for Pokemon

Alder's theme sounds like that because, unlike the other Champions, you don't fight him as an imposing final boss. You fight him as a familiar face whom you've gotten to know well. The theme is also less intimidating than, say, N's final battle theme, because the world has been saved, and you can just relax and have a battle with no pressure or world-shaking stakes looming in the background.
Wallace deserves more acknowledgement IMO.
Cynthia actually has *another* remix for the Undella Town battles. The B2W2 theme you heard is her PWT theme.

cynthia's most likely going to be on S rank and maybe next tier list is for all the other pokemon games not the main ones but like pokemon mystery dungeon, pokemon ranger ect
Gen 5 tried to do something different with the Champion themes, like with everything else. They fit them to the characters rather than the role. So Iris’ theme is brilliant, but yeah, as a champion theme, I can’t put it above A.

There is a normal black and white theme of cynthia and there is a PWT version of cynthia's theme (their is a diffrents in those 2)

Other themes gave a feeling of camaraderie, epicness, and conclusion. Cynthia's theme kicked my fight or flight reflex on. That ALONE makes it the best Champion Theme in my eyes. And thats not even getting into the fact that it slaps like no other.
Honestly, I enjoy watching these when I'm trying to write my own version of a particular kind of theme and get stuck, because you share your idea of what these sorts of themes should represent, which kinda helps a bit.

Here's how I would rank the Champion battle themes:
S tier = Blue, Steven
A tier = Lance, Cynthia (they would be S tier but less nostalgia for me than the other two)
B tier = Iris, Red/Blue theme from Sun/Moon
C tier = Alder, Diantha
D tier = Kukui, Hau (I'm sorry, they just sound too cheery to be Champion themes)
The S and A tiers are super close, though.

This is very late, but in Back and White and the squeals, Cynthia’s theme is different when you fight her in the house in Undella town. It’s ways better than the World Tournament theme

I just beat soulsilver and Lance's battle took me an hour and a half of pure shenanigans and hearing it again made me just dive into a closet like NO DRAGONITE GO AWAY SHOO
Lance has way too many dragonites then again he was a dragon type trainer and there were barely any dragon types during gen 2 so the dragonites reapeat was bound to happen

Not even really a hot take, but Cynthia’s theme is overrated as hell. Everyone just focuses on the fight that comes with it. I think in terms of “boss battle” feel there are waaay better contenders. The original Blue theme from first gen fucking BOPS. You didn’t even know a champion existed then, and you just finished four consecutive fucking dreadnoughts as a kid, just to learn you got one more and he’s the absolute worst. The crazy intro to that song is so intense! And it’s so all over the place the whole fight like your fighting for your life. Also I think sun and moon remix of reds theme fucking slaps as well. Kikui’s theme from sun and moon is the ultimate coming of age boss theme. It takes motifs from the game and really feels like a “you’ve come so far and this is the final recap” type of song. It’s actually super well made, just not a metal intense sort of boss
