Went to the doctors office yesterday and just happened to look at my feet in flip flops... They looked like I had walked a hundred miles with my shoes off. I thought... My hands and my feet reflect how hard I have pursued life. I will not be ashamed.

I had two relatives this week who wanted to know if I had any blackberry jelly, I said no I can not walk or stand to pick them anymore, but if they would pick enough of them for all of us that I would make the jelly. none of them could to do it. Then they wanted to get into the strawberry jam and I about went into one of my fits! Then I had my sister in law wanting my dill pickles I canned yesterday I told here I had extra cucumbers she could have but she didn't want to make her own. I decided last spring when I couldn't get any of them to help put my garden in that I would not give away any of my canning this year! I get them asking about tomatoes and green beans or stopping by to see if the fruit trees are ready but I told them that I wouldn't have extra this year because I would be giving it to the food bank. I have a lot of angry relatives but after this year without my garden getting done I decided I don't care. They all keep saying they are coming to my house if I'm right about GSM. I know tell them they can't cause they don't know how to work and that if I don't have someone with a back that can garden and clean the barn or any other physical work then they can't stay with us. None of them have ever had to do with out. They are not wealthy people but they would rather go to concerts and own all the latest electronics and most times they want to buy these before paying their own bills and of course they would call us to help with paying the bills, but not anymore cause I told them I'm done and will not be giving out anything anymore. I had a sister in-law call me the B swear word I told her I worked hard and long for that title and would except it with pride and would patiently be waiting for my plaque. Oh the stories I could tell but it already looks like I'm writing a book in this post.

It's my fault they behave this way. When they had babies I would help all the time, but the kids are all grown now I think the youngest is now 20 years old so I don't feel bad for the kids or the parents. they are all pretty healthy and are still working they just don't bother to manage their money properly. They offered to help, but when I took them up on their offer no one could find the time or they wanted to do it latter ( which never happened) I have never asked them for help in the past not even to watch my kids when they were little, it was the first time excepting the offer from them to help and they couldn't manage the time. I've decide that if it's not related to health issues I'm not helping. Might sound mean spirited but just tired of taking care of people who can't return the favor once in a while.

I moved out of the State where I grew up in my 20's. Every year I'd go back for 10 days to 2 weeks helping my parents around the house and spending time with them and share in the bounty of the sea food, fresh garden veggies and fruit. After my dad passed I would go back in the summers and provide my mom with the berries and fruit to make the jams and jellies for when I returned the next year. I never expected to come home and consume without participating in some way. Of course it wasn't all work, there was still time for a lot of play sailing and motor boating with picnics on the beaches.

Great video. I was fortunate to have lots of older people in my life when I was young. One was in WW1. Some were in WW2. They survived the Depression era. They were stern but, with good reason. They knew how to garden, can, make stuff, and they used what they had.. I didn't appreciate what they were telling me when I was younger. I appreciate it now. Miss them all.

My grandparents on my Dads side were farmers and had livestock. I didn't spend much time with them, but was raised by my mothers parents. But I have this homesteading in my blood. I just cant see living in subdivisions. I have before. It's pure misery.

Danny, my late parents and in laws HATED sweet potatoes. The only time they would serve them was sometimes on Thanksgiving. I have always loved them. But, I didn't really get to eat them much till I was older and cooked. I later grew them myself and found out what a REAL sweet potato tasted like. YUM But, I guess if I had to eat them every day for maybe years with every meal or the only meal...I am sure I would feel differently. Good stories about the pear trees.
LCE doesn't scare me as much as "people" AFTER an LCE!! Good advice to know "ahead of time" who you'll help and who you won't.

My grandmother was born in 1911, and she used to speak about the hard times her family went through. There were 12 kids in her family, and she said they used to have to eat cornbread, syrup, and milk three times a day. I don't remember ever eating cornbread until I made it myself. I never saw her fix it - I just don't think she ever wanted to look at it again.

A very serious message. You are right. Thank you. So much wisdom is found in the closeness to the earth. It is a hard and humble thing to work in a garden, needing what grows. Every time an animal or pest eats something, it takes away from our own food to put in storage. How easy our lives have been, having stores filled with food. As a nation, we have learned to live with plenty. As you point out - when our grocery stores are empty, so many will cry and seek help from the government and neighbors. Yes, now it is time to consider whom to refuse.

We have many around that are the same.we grow as much as we can ,raise livestock etc and fell so good to provide for ourselves.

Physically life is easier. This is causing a lot of people with too much time on their hands to sit in front of a computer and have lots of meaningless "friends" on social media. The powerful subliminal and sometimes outright -in your face messages about how inadequate a person us unless they do,act or buy a certain way or product is wrecking our society. People are self isolating and finding companionship through the internet. Granted there is a lot of awesome content on the internet but we are losing our humanity to the glowing rectangle- computer, phone,tv,pad. People are forgetting how.to interact socially in real life. Endorphins, the feel good chemicals are made when we look each other in the eye. Losing the ability to interact with real people in your neighborhood is isolating and has the powers that be where they want us' under their control. This technology is very addicting and they know it. Finding like minded people who want to grow food and are more God and self reliant is getting harder and harder because people spend less time outside. Technology is making us passive and in some cases dependent in our relationships.

I needed this porch time, I have tried and tried and tried to help our neighbors and they are just not getting the concept of grow your own food or do something with those fifty billion chickens besides being pets, and then they have stolen out of our garden, seriously, have struggled with this and just finally put a lock on the garden and got a German Shepherd! I did the whole teach a man to fish and she still took instead of doing her own, even after giving her tons and tons of seeds and plants. There is an excuse for everything also, the sun killed it, the bugs killed them, our family members are mean to me, just really sad.

I really enjoyed your porch time, I've many times spoke to family about my concern of our dependency on electronics, especially the "SMART" phones. I told them I remember a few years ago when we needed to memorize each other's phone numbers to call each other. Now we just look up in our contacts. I'd ask what if your were stranded without your contacts? You had to use someone else's phone... most don't know the closest of their family's numbers. I think of it as the animals in a zoo, we can't just let them loose in the wild to fend for themselves. These poor animals wouldn't know how to take care of themselves and would probably starve to death. They are so use to having food handed to them they forgot how to hunt. I see the current population being like zoo animals, if a life changing event happened no one would know what to do. Me personally, I've been trying to learn as much as I can to know how to take care of my family in hopes of not having to deal with the crazies out there. ( And THANK YOU! You are one of my go to info to learn from.) My husband and I own a bread business, he use to work in the milk delivery business. I've seen the shelves cleared at just the chance of snow. Stores are not set up to hold enough food for a lot of people, most get product delivered everyday. I want no part of the stores if something happens,LOL! We stay clear of it during the snow scares. THANK YOU FOR SHARING COMMON SENSE!

Great lesson in this message. I worked for everything I got till an accident at work shattered disks in my neck and low back. Multiple surgeries and rehab have stabilized things but the nerves were so damaged it is hard to be up more than 4-5 a day at an hour a time. I watch you to learn what I can. Have started 2 gardens. Not much as live in suburbs. A 4×4 last year. Added an 8×8 this year. Each year my squash has gotten a fungus or mold and didn't produce so had to pull them. Last year had a better crop of tomatoes. This year got a couple cucumbers and some eggplant not as many tomatoes. God bless you and your family. Keep up all the videos. I hope one day to leave suburbs. But may never happen. Don't know if I could physically do a homestead but would like to see. If the LCE comes before then I have some reserves and keep getting what I can without going beyond what I can.

Your story of the man cutting down the pare tree is the exact same story my uncle told me about his fig tree. He gave permission one time for someone to take a mess of figs. When he went to pick for canning, wasn't a fig left. He got his ax and cut it down. He knew it would be a continual problem. It's so easy for some. For those of us who struggle, it's not easy and sometimes, a lot of times down right disappointing. Trusting God gets us through, along with hard hard work. Thanks Danny. Great vid.

You sure made me do some more thinking today.. I sure appreciate all of your wisdom...

when I managed a store it always amazed me the idleness of the people I hired! I have 3 sons that always worked the farm. They all managed to get their first jobs at the age of 14. They are now in their 30's, good Christian men that have worked hard for their successes and you can throw them out in the middle of the woods and they would flourish. Most have raised a world of. individuals with no survival skills, a sense of entitlement and never think about what ifs!!! No wonder our world have abandoned our Lord! Thank you Danny for always bringing the truth to light..

I love my computer I'll admit it but most of the time I am doing something else while watching it or listening to it. Today is Day 3 of canning peaches I was blessed with last week. I have lost count of how many jars of peach preserves and now canned peaches I am doing while listening to your you tube videos. Next up is coring tomatoes and preparing them to make salsa. Tomorrow starts peeling 2 bags of potatoes and preparing to can them up too. I've watered my tomatoes that are still growing at 7am this morning along with my Fall garden of green beans, peas, kale and cucumbers. So I listen, learn and work. I take notes and keep them in a binder. Could I live without the computer? You betcha I could TV too. I hope I don't have to for awhile as I am still learning how to can different meats and beans and ideas for how to serve them. Oh I also have a load of clothes hanging on the clothesline this morning. Thank you for sharing your experiences and ideas.

Danny, you always make me stop and think, and that is your intention . Good job! Today, I'm thinking back to the difficult times I've had in the past that made it easier for me today to live on the smallest income I've ever had.
You mentioned the dollar being worth only 50 cents. I remember when the cost of Cokes in the machine in the high school cafeteria went up from 5 cents to 6 cents. What do they cost now? I was fortunate to have that nickel and penny to pay for a Coke. What to sodas in drink machines cost now? $1.00 or more? Another thing. Do you remember when dollar bills had printed on them "Silver Certificate"?

We have a picture of when my mother-in-law was a child in the 1930's her parents looked emaciated and the children thin. Really makes you think how hard life must have been. Back in those times people had gardens not worthless lawns. But make you think how even those on the small city lots could possibly produce enough food. I think that because of those hard time's parents pushed their children to be educated so they wouldn't have to have the hard times like they had. Fast forward another 2/3 generations most of those traditional skills were barely passed on, to the world today where even tech jobs aren't as high paying as they were 20 yrs ago. To the retirement folks those who put 30+ yrs in and the company you worked for appreciated the hard working folks. My grandfather retired from Ford's in the 80's and had a very comfortable retirement, fast forward to today and companies are doing whatever they can to screw over their dedicated worker's, and how big dogs can pay as little as possible. Gone are the days where a person reaps the reward of serving their company for 30+ yrs. To making changes to ones retirement after retiring and having their benefits cut. I don't even understand how this is even legal, but it's happening. And companies wonder why people aren't as hardworking and devoted... Even our Vet's who served our country are living in the street's, broken mentally and physically while the VA is giving the bare bones treatment to the men and women who gave their lives to protect our freedom.
I have given small amounts of money to those panhandlers, one a double amputee, who's wife had cancer out in nearly 20 below temps... I never regret giving, what that person does with that is on them. I'm so heartbroken over the environment we are living in... This isn't the America I grew up in, where I actually believed that WE THE PEOPLE still have a voice in this FREE COUNTRY! We've come to a place where many have stopped fighting for what's right, but belly up and just let it happen...

Hello Danny, you are to right, creed is infectious and contagious. It's like the information gets shared, and you not willing to help any one any more. I'm very tolerant but not for lazy. These greedy people are just lazy they let everyone else do the work. I see this evening my family and they weren't raised that way and Grandchildren seem to be worse. It makes me truly sad, I try to reach them to take care of themselves there like why this is your deal. But they want to enjoy the fruits of my labor and I'm 60 and disabled and still work circles around them. Break my heart, much love in Christ.

This is a wonderful porch time, Danny. You are right on, as usual. There is going to be a very rude awakening for the 'soft' people in this country, and that time may not be too far down the road. .....The pear story: Maybe he could have put them out in boxes and put a free sign on them. Still better than letting them rot on the ground. My Mom used to tell us stories about the depression, she was born in 1926. Nothing was ever wasted. She used to even save plastic bags and wash them and reuse them, at the time plastic bags only came on food products, you couldn't just go out and buy them. Now it seems every thing is plastic! Things are made to break so you have to go out and buy another. Used to be craftsmen took pride in their creations and would never make junk. All this stuff from China may be cheaply had, but it's cheaply made. Buy something good to start with, instead of having to buy it 10 times over cause it just don't last. I worked hard in factories near all my life and worked hard at home as well. I am retired now from an away from home job but still have my place to keep up and garden and chickens and always here to help family or my one good neighbor.

What a great porch time, Danny! I hear you. Life has not gotten easier as I've grown older, but that's okay. I'm a survivor. My goal is to make certain that my son knows how to survive, too. I'm amazed at just how much he thinks he knows at 31......That's precisely why I have actual books in my home on canning, gardening, composting, butchering, etc., because one day he may not have Google to show him things. Do I take advantage of some things that make life easier? Of course I do! If I can order things online and have them delivered to my home for free, absolutely! I can save some time by stocking up on canning jars, lids, rings, etc., by ordering them in bulk while I have the opportunity, and stockpile them. There may come a time when no store has these things. Sure, I use Google for quick answers, but I also know how to find things out on my own. Sure I save some things to my computer, but I make sure to print and store hard copies of things I need to know.....and my son thinks I'm wasting my time. Until a hurricane happens and there are no lights, A/C, cell phone service or internet for a few weeks. It's during these tough times that he's learned the most valuable lessons in life. The meat in the freezer thaws, and he has to help me prepare and can it. Honestly, I don't need the help, but I make him do it so he'll know how. He doesn't like to garden - too hot, messy, smelling, etc., but I insist that I need help - I really don't - just so he'll know how to do it. Hopefully, he'll survive when I'm gone.

Pan handling is really bad in Albuquerque. Every corner just about has someone asking for money. Its crazy. They are talking about making laws that people are not aloud to panhandle. I had it one time where I had enough money to take myself and my kids to Mcdonalds to get lunch off the dollar menu. WE had been saving up coins so we could go. On the way in a homeless guy asked if I could buy him something to eat. I said I could get him a hamburger and fries. So I order for him and my kids. I went without lunch that day. While my kids where playing the guy came to our table and said thank you again for buying him lunch. My kids asked me why I hadn't gotten something to eat. I told them who knows the last time he ate and I could figure out something at home later on to eat.

Somehow, society flip flops the costs of products...i.e. For example, once in awhile I quilt blankets. Well, the cost of quilting a blanket yourself is so much more expensive than buying one at Macy's and Macy's is not a cheap store.
