Great talk, Danny. When I was young, I worked on my Uncle's farm during most of my school vacations. I helped my Aunt garden and can, and I helped with the animals. My mother did a few of these things - we lived in the suburbs in Northern Virginia, where we had a garden, berries and fruit trees, and we lived in the mountains outside of Luray where another uncle taught me how to fish, gather wild berries and know which ones were good to eat, and deal with wild animals and poisonous snakes. You don't know how glad I am that I grew up "poor." I had to learn a lot of things to survive. The squirrels I hunted and the fish I caught was the supper we had that night when we would have otherwise had nothing. I listened to my grandmother, my uncles and others who were willing to teach me things. My son has a lot to learn - He had very little interest in gardening, canning and such, but I now make him help me with these things, not because I need the help, but because he needs to know these things. Until I retired, I had to work to keep us under a roof and put food on the table. Now that I'm retired, I have the time to make him take more notice. One day, he's going to need to know these things. I encourage his friends to "help" me in the kitchen, in the garden, or with the chickens. Some are now learning to dehydrate, can, cook and bake from scratch and make cheese. I'm encouraging older people on social security to learn to do these things so they can stretch the meager amount of monthly income they have. So many sit and whine about having so little, when if they'd just learn to do something other than buy processed food for the day, they'd have plenty! And above all else, I thank God many times everyday for the blessings in my life!

I’m 28 now but I started canning around 23/24. You’d be amazed at the reactions I get when older people hear that I can. I’ve had people stop me in the canning aisle at the store to ask me things. It’s crazy the various reactions we get when we share about our homesteading life.

Thank God that one of my favorite people to listen to stories from was my grandma. She was born in 1903 so she taught me the "good old ways" to garden and my father taught me gardening and how to raise animals. My momma taught me how to hunt and how to butcher an animal.

This is why I am looking for a hand crank/manual operated grain mill. I am 69 years and remember my mom and grandfather doing many things the old way. That is how they taught me to cook, can, clean and garden, then later to sew. I was the oldest of 5 children and had to help my brothers learn to do their chores as well. Our first washing machine was the old wringer type with rinse tubs beside it. I hung all the clothes on clothes lines outside or in winter on lines in our basement. I also washed my brothers shirts on a rub board in the bath tub. I believe we will need these skills again very soon. I also remember mom burning a wool glove and holding my brother's foot over it to pull out the infection after he stepped on a nail and did not tell her right away. She saved his foot. Put black salve on it afterwards for several days. I always keep the black salve on hand.
    Thanks for the video.

I started learning old ways back in 70s and have been adding information and skills ever since. the last 20 years, I belonged to a Medieval Society--SCA-- and I have learned many very old skills and have books that go with these skills. I still have much to learn and I am teaching my grandchildren. They are learning canning, dehydrating, building and garden skills. Many folk are learning and there is a feeling of need in the air.

My parents are very modern and I've always yearned for the "antique" knowledge of the world, nature, and everything else! Forever learning is my goal. Now, I'm on CZcams looking for you! Also, my grandparents died very young and their knowledge died with them. Teach us!!

  • @primrozie
    @primrozie Před 5 lety

Great topic Danny. I was not raised in the country. I learned a few things when young like gardening, fishing and gutting them and pan frying, shooting a gun, starting a fire, camping type things.
I was an adult when I learned food preservation, like canning and dehydrating. Making vinegar and medicinal home remedies, cooking from scratch. Raising chickens. Husband hunts.
I do have the books for things I haven't learned like the Foxfire book series. Homesteading books. Saving seeds.
I know that it was the Lord giving me the interest to learn country living and homesteading. I was 22 when I moved to a rural area and my country learning really began. I'm so thankful for what I've learned and continue to learn. This is a very satisfying way of living.
I saw the boss's tracking video. I would not have had a clue. I thought it was amazing.

Oh My Goodness Mr. Danny !!! You had me in stitches when you talked about - how momma treated our illnesses. My memories started pouring in and oh boy did that hit home. I to this day use alot of what I was taught, on my grandchildren and I need to explain to them more about the old ways not just show them by treating them. I also have them in the garden with me; but I also see that I need to improve on the teaching of a garden, not just the end results, and this vedio opened my eyes that it's up to me for them to learn history; because in today's times they will never be taught. Again - I thank you for a eye opener .

I was just talking about this yesterday! People don't know how to do things because they don't have to. But what happens when it's forgotten and we do need to do things for ourselves? This is one of the reasons I feel called to homestead and am working to learn a lot of these skills. Sadly, these skills are already lost among the majority of my family and community. I love the scripture that you shared. It says in the new living translation to follow the path and you will find rest for your souls. Finding this rest is the other major reason.

My grandpa died a few years back. He only had a 4th grade education but was full of so much wisdom and knowledge . He was passing it on to me through his countless stories he'd share while we were fishing or sitting on his back porch swing, me hanging onto his every word. He grew up a poor farm boy in Arkansas when turpentine was the cure all for everything lol. Tales of growing up with " that mean s.o.b. Johnny Cash", to joining the Army and being shipped to Korea, bar fights and classic cars. He was a hunting, fishing, gardening, canning and preserving man and taught most of that to me. Passed that love onto me. He is a big reason I do what I do. Man, I miss him terribly. Off to have a good cry now. :(

I rode motorcycles for about 25 years. But when I started I rode with a gal that had been riding for a long time. We took a trip down south and my motorcycle started acting up like it was missing out or starving for gas. We pulled over and she said it sounded like I had a vapor lock so she took a close pin out of her saddle bag and clamped it on my gas line I never had another issue or forgot what she had showed me.

There is nothing but truth in this!!! I was never taught these skills or most importantly, God. I practically begged my dad to teach me how to can in my mid twenties. I begged him to teach me how to hunt when I was a kid (more than once) and it never happened. I am now in my early 40's and have only learned some of the skills I need and my relationship with the Lord is only a few years young. We are now teaching my daughter and granddaughter these skills. I do not want to fail them. Jesus Christ is number one and then we learn new skills!!

You know I have been infatuated with learning the old ways my whole life and listening to you I realized I still have holes in mt knowledge. Like foraging, I know the berries and nuts and wild grapes but even though I read the books and watched videos I am scared to trust my identification of plants and mushrooms without someone who can say yes you got that right or no don't touch that so I know if I am doing it right without making myself sick or killing myself

Good reaction to mushrooms especially as so many are deadly. I am trying to get in on some of the ranger talks around here about wild food that is ok to eat.

I'm actually going to close up my carpentry business soon because it's impossible to find help anymore and at 51 years old I'm just not able to do it all myself on a daily basis. I'm going to get a basic job M-F and work on growing a new business in small agriculture. I'm hoping that's something I can do for another 20 years but who knows.

Yes 100% agree that more and more of the old ways are just vanishing. I've spent the last 2 years buying up books to help teach me some old skills and also make sure to ask questions when I am around my parents who were taught the old ways by their parents.

I was gifted a chest of frankincense from the mideast @ 13 years ago. Since then I have learned a great deal of the treasures of the East and why these oils and spices were so precious . In the 60s I began my own quest of natural gardening, health treatments and experimenting with the arts of the 1800s into the industrial revolution. I have vital skills of survival and was able to teach many women these skills and truths. Very grateful for the past as we enter every era of discovery! It always surprises me when a contemporary woman cannot cook a basic meal or know how to thread a needle or know the difference between organic and processed ...of anything! great video! I too believe that God is watching closely how we are conducting His business. America is a divine gift from a loving Father in Heaven and His begotten son Jesus Christ! Keep it in reverence.

They were always sought after. Oils and spices were precious, now people buy them for pennies and think they are getting "Good" quality. Once you use real cinnamon, the powdered canned stuff in the grocery store isn;t the same, is it?

So true. There are so many skills that have vanished. So people simply have no interest doing anything that remotely resembles work. They want instant everything. The people protesting commercial farming/fishing/livestock production simply have no clue where their food comes from or how to use it before its processed.

It really is sad all the things that are being lost. Dependence on technology has gotten so infiltrated with so many people, THEY would be lost without it. I remember my Mom telling us they never went to the doctor. Her father would take a tooth brush and iodine and scrub out a bad cut. Kids learned to be tough in those days, not like now where most of them whine over every little 'boo boo'. I'm 67 now and rarely went to a doctor, cause in those days when I was little, if you were real sick, the doctor made house calls! For a cold we got Vicks Vapo Rub on our chest and man that stuff opened your sinuses right quick! Hammers! I'm one of those tom boys who CAN drive a nail and I love working with one. ( just have to watch if I put it down, my dog likes to pick it up and run off with it , lol ) I've been to auctions with boxes of old stuff and got a good collection of all kinds of nails , keep them in coffee cans in the shed!

My Grandma would blow smoke in our ears for earaches and whiskey for teething babies. I had told my daughter in law when my grandbaby was teething to use whiskey and she just about came unglued. So she had to deal with the crying. She told me that she would become an acholic.

That is why we are on the web cause are fathers/dads or Mothers/moms have not given us the knowledge to provide for are familys/self.So we have a desire for knowledge knowing we are missing what we need.Since they(goverment/schools) have doctrained us, not to provide for are selfs and dependent of others to care for are needs. Great talk today Danny.

Usually the old ways are better than the new. When you start mixing technology with homesteading and prepping you build a breakable system. If you have all manual tools you don't have to worry about blackouts. And as you say if the knowledge is no longer is only kept on a computer, for example, during a power outage where is your knowledge. Lost to you. If the power never comes back on it's lost for good. I'm doing my best to teach my grandchildren and any other children in my life the love of gardening and growing food.

The saying use it or lose it comes to mind...
If you have the light of God truly in your heart it can NOT be put out...
Many people are baptised in these churches of today and people say they are Christians but instead of following Christ they follow some preacher, pastor whatever you call him. These churches do not do god's work. They are leading people astray.
Don't follow blindly waiting for them to read you scripture!
Read the Bible for yourself, you will be amazed at all that it holds and gives that is not in church!
Another thing that I think is critical is building community.
Online community is AWESOME but when the net goes down.... What then?
Know your neighbors today and it is added protection for tomorrow.
Whatever you do learn to grow food!!!
Thank you Danny for always being a voice of sound reasoning.
    Be blessed!

I cannot agree with you more Danny! Im 34, and the truth is my parents generation was terrible for taking the easy way and sticking with entertainment. My parents taught their kids literally nothing about life and the most ironic thing was, they were both public school teachers. I grew up watching my grandparents be farmers and my mother didnt pass down one single thing about growing food to us. She felt partying and vacationing was more important. My father was selfish and lazy, didnt want to be around his kids. I sit back, trying to learn how to garden, how to cook, how to raise my son and I feel so totally lost. People my age have to learn everything all over from scratch because one generation felt knowledge and experience wasnt worth anything. All I ever hear from them, or others is how hard everything I wanna do is as if thats a reason to just not bother. My generation has been betrayed by our parents, left out in the cold totally ignorant and the worst part is they seem to take no responsibility for how lost we all are. Getting to listen to people like you has been invaluable to me. Keep sharing lost knowledge, some of us truly do care and are in dire need of it.
