My first nice amp was an OG block letter 5150 my dad got me when I was a teenager in 1996. We were kinda poor but my dad and I both loved Eddie and I was getting good at the guitar so he went for it. Solid guy. A few years later in college I thought it was cooler to have a Marshall so I traded it for a JCM 2000 TSL 60w. Yeah... 60 w. I'm a total douche. I still have that stupid TSL. Now that I'm the same age as my dad was then, and he's gone from the earth, that TSL reminds me of how cool my dad was and how stupid I was. I'm a doctor now and very grateful so have a little money so bought all the 5150s. I wish I could give them all to my dad. RIP dad. I know you know that I was as stupid as you were once.
Hey the TSL rips too man!!
Anything called Mr. Scary is guaranteed to deliver.
Also, when playing makes you smile huge and smile, it's crazy joy.
Dude, how?!!! This thing sounds freakin’ amazing. Best recto tone I have heard in CZcams videos (and I’ve been watching a lot of them as I’m debating getting a recto). I think I’m sold after seeing this video. Also need a Mr Scary mod obviously. Thank you for another awesome video, as always. 👊🏼
dude you're the fucking best metal channel for gear and tones on youtube, simples as that... keep going man
That amp is sick sounding dude. I was smiling right along with you after the mod. Great to see you enjoying yourself as well!
As soon as you put the MOD in it, we start hearing and feeling your joy of playing it. Cool!
Hello, this is my first video here. Great job. I am a bass player, and when the band came off tour for the last time, my guitarist needed money to start his new path in life. so I thought i was helping him with buying his ?1997? Dual Rec. I had only ever heard it on large stages. We had a case maker design flight cases, so we didnt have to take them out of the case. We just removed the front lid/front and unsealed a small plate in the back to plug into. Let me tell you, he did me the solid by selling it to me. Holy S#!+ ! I have had duals paired with the oversized cabs 8-10 times in my studio prior to this point. This THING is a monster! It stays inside the stag/flight case with the front off. The low end is so HUGE yet it sounds so translucent with a face melting sound. Your gutz RuMbLe. Now, saying that when I take it out of the case it sounds like every other oversized Mesa cab. If you can recreate this in any of your own studios, this is a MUST DO!!! But what do I know, I'm just a bass player. ;) Nice channel BTW. Keep it up!
The tone in that last riff was nasty AF! Keep up the good work KB!
The 90s dual rectos were things of legend. And while I still like the amp - and it sound super unique... not sure if I'd ever want to have one anymore.
Man this is absolutely amazing!! Wish I still had my Rectifier. Would be curious if this would work on the OR15? Feel like that amp would also benefit with the extra headroom in the preamp
I had a multi watt triple rectifier with el34 power tubes that looked identical to this. Killer amp
Bonus points for the Blue Voodoo cab!! Good solid cabs that can be found for a steal these days.
Yep. My 1992 Charvel Rhoads CRR 068. Made for 1 year. Purchased from a shop in Russia for $400. Sold for $700 and got damaged in shipping so one less in the pool. It was almost mint.
That Balaguer is awesome... I love the Hyperions / any "explorer" shape they do is pretty badass.
Wonderful. I somehow needed this today.
Yes, I sold my 99 Triple Recto. Most amazing sounding recto I've ever played and only heard a few on youtube with the same mojo this thing had. Sold it along with the oversize 4x12 cab before I went to college and regretted it every day of my adult life.
You also have str-430 power tubes in that. Those are the Sovtec 6L6wxt that mesa used for a short time. They are a bit clearer and tighter in the lows IMO,,,,compared to the 420 that are more common mesa chinese tubes.
That’s got a lot more growl and bark than it originally did. Wow. I’ll have to try this!
I’m a huge fan of Mesa amps. I’ve got a Mark V and a TC 100. I had a single rectifier a while back and didn’t quite bond with it at the time - looking back I never should have sold it
Fun fact, Jeff Loomis used a rectoverb in Nevermore
How do you like that TC 100?
I regret selling my Peavey 3120 head & 412 half stack. Not that I need 120 watts or have a place to play those 120 watts but all three channels were usable and sounded really good.
So freaking good sounding!!!!
Killer, Kyle!!!
Thanks for sharing!🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Yes. My Laney 4x12 cab and 5150 head from the 90s.
God I wish I still had my dual rec. This sounds great
There are great rectifiers out there. I have a 2002 modified Dual Rec that sounds and feels great. A boost allows me to shape it however I like.
I can't get the gain past about 11:00. It's just for so much.
that's modded though, not stock
Hey Kyle!
Have you considered the possibility of a series of videos looking at pedal-type amplifiers like the Blackstar Amped 3, the BluGuitar Amp 1 Iridium, etc. and comparing them to conventional tube amps?
If somebody has the right collection of tube amps to make an informed comparison, that's you man.
Love this idea
Nice video!
The riff at 12:13 sounds like Revocation. 👍
I had a PRS S2 McCarty 594 I sold when I bought the PRS core model. I had upgraded the S2 with 57/07 Pickups. I miss that guitar so much. I didn't like Core model and traded it for a Gibson ES335. I tried to buy it back and the guy had already traded it .
That sounds surprisingly awesome
What up fellow erieite? Lmao Yo I love this mod I have same version mesa head chrome plate not blacked out. I’ll be getn my hands on a mr.scary mod asap. I’m so AMPED now can’t wait. Thanks bro Randy /BluntForce/LED.
Throughout this video I was getting more and more excited about dusting off my old Rectoverb DR head which had been relegated to a permanent location in the closet. Until I heard the price for the mod. Damn... 320 bucks is like half of what I paid for this amp some years back. The mod sounds incredible though...
So now you MUST put the Mr. Scary mod into EVERY amp you demo! 😁 I would be curious to see what it would do to something like a Bogner Uber or a Diezel VH4 (if you have one). Not that they need a mod - just curious what's possible. Or how about the mod in something like a Fender Super Sonic - would that make it a metal amp? 🤩
At the moment I am living in Asia away from my "real" amps back in the US - playing the PRS MT15 which I bought on your recommendation. No regrets there - what a great amp! Thanks for steering me in the right direction! 🤘
Man, I didnt realize you had a Zzounds link too, i knew you did Sweetwater... I will remember that, ive been ordering from them quite a bit lately...
Appreciate you, my dude
Excellent work.
That’s pretty cool, I’ve seen these before, but didn’t know how well it would do or if it could damage something.
I have a newer multi-watt. I use a wampler ego compressor and a fulltone full drive. I think I get similar tones to yours with that setup.
Wow that;s not bad man, listen to the open high notes that ring out. If you did that on a gain saturated Dual Rec in would sound so bad but those 2 strings ring out nicely
I wonder what the Legendary Tones modules sound like in an amp where they wouldn't be a good fit?
*Mesa rectifiers have become the staple sound of metal, and you mentioned the real culprit above all others which is being scooped and having some grain or rasp to it.*
For at least the last 20 years, every amp and every mod I've employed is scooping mids, having a lot of bass, moderate treble and a good amount of grit and rasp, but being I'm primarily a solid-state guy, it's a PITA to tame the high even order harmonics that semiconductors are plagued with.
*This is why digital is certain to take over, they've basically nailed tube fizz and zing, and the chip architecture being manufactured has finally been adapted for asymmetrical clipping and resolving at least some of the high even order harmonic content.*
I'm a bit late to the game, but my s.s. analog designs created from the ground up still do it significantly better than the most expensive digital gear around outside of something like a Kemper.
*The mod you added to resolve this amp's failures is relative to something I'm designing and building using solid-state, but perfectly confident mine will do it way better and for any type of amp technology.*
Love the All Out War and Hatebreed riffs!
I had no idea the mrscary works in the rectifier!!! Im getting my rev g out again 😁
I wonder why it says this on the motorcityguitars website?
Popular amps that the HMV2/Lynch Mod DO NOT WORK with include: Marshall Silver Jubilee series, Marshall Origin series, Marshall DSL/TSL series, Mesa Boogie amps, and Hiwatt.
That was an old description from our own website. Before we validated this amp. We’ll let MCG to update as well.
At 11:57 you roll off the treble and there is a cranky noise.. if that happenes when you turn the pot, that’s a sign of DC leakage, and that’s bad! Some caps might need to be changed. Psionic Audio has some Trem-o-verb videos where he also finds this issue, as far as I remember.
nice tone ! it seems like the mod is introducing a lot of hum on the amp !
Oh my, Kyle, that sounds lovely.
There are few amps that sound as brutal as a rectifier with a boost. It just always annoyed me that my Roadster always sounded flubby without the boost so I spent more time turning knobs than playing. In addition to the sound, without the boost it was also lacking that awesome feel when palm muting like you are taming a beast, which gets loose when you stop palm muting. It was just always the same level. With the boost it sounded absolutely crushing though, much like the tone in your video. Sometimes when I hear a great rectifier tone I do regret selling it.
ive been follow this mod for a very long time and last month got mine Mr Scary for this same thinking. using it with my amps which are on the loose side. david is the guy. you can use this mod in any amp maybe it works or not the good thing is no damage to the amplifer. so win win.
Call me crazy but when you bumped the mic it actually sounded really good. It really accentuated the characteristic aggressive top end rectifiers have
Was thinking the same thing too lol
I understand that your content is more amp based and plugins is not your deal, but it would be interesting to hear your take on amp plugins that simulate amps you have in your collection, like Josh Middleton has a plugin modeling his personal 5150, rectifier and triple x.
I actually liked how it sounded when you bumped the mic😂
Kyle, thanks for the video.
I’ll be watching to see about the multi watt.
Any idea when it might be available for purchase?
edges?
@@belligerentamateur sorry, typo. I meant a production version
The drop C balaguer sounded insane.
That's insane! Wonder if it'll work in my triple rec? Sounds great man ❤
I have several JCM style amps, and a trec, now I'm wondering the same thing!
Same preamp structure so if it’s a 2-channel version you’re all set. We are still exploring the 3 channel and multi-watt versions.
@@LegendaryTones nice to know yup I've got a 3 channel....
@@LegendaryTonesgood to know, because I own a 1998 Rev G 2ch Triple Rectifier head.
@@untoldguitarist Perfect! 🤟🏻
Kyle, I wonder if this would work on the Mesa Stiletto Deuce 🤔🤔
To answer your question...yes! A 1987 Fernandes Brad Gillis super strat. Man that guitar was cool. Big mistake letting it go. But I was 16, so I didn't know about seller's remorse yet.
pretty killer Kyle, thank you! Side note, you're getting jacked man!
Kyle, try to set the TS with the volume at 2 o'clock, gain at 0 and tone to taste. I used to avoid to set the volume at max with my Recto. It sounds fantastic, anyway.
The more output the better on a boost in front of a stock rectifier for me, that way I can keep the gain on the amp lower and reap the benefits of the preamp not being overly compressed
Now time to see if it’ll work with the Badlander and Stiletto 😈
It works with the badlander but not the Stiletto
Damn. Those downtuned riffs sound NASTY. I think I'm in love.
Never played a real Dual Rec but have played some sims and have always struggled with them because of that muddy gain i could never get a tone I liked. While there is no Mr Scary mod for simulators I now understand how the gain on a Dual Rec works and that will help me shape a tone I like.
I also never played a real one cause it's too much $$$ but I plugged in my guitar to an amp sim with no overdrive or anything and for me it's perfect. I didn't need any OD I just have EMG 85x in the bridge
Nice video man, I need to try this on my rev F!
One question though: V3 is the triode that is responsible for the last gain stage and the cathode follower pre tone stack.
Have you tried putting the scary mod in v2, thus affecting 2nd and 3rd gain stages?
keep it up!
Hey man, according to David at LegendaryTones, it has to go in the cathode follower position or it will not work
@@belligerentamateur understood, thanks for confirming this!
Sounds so damn good with the Mr. Scary
Oh yeah...Sovtek Mig 50 and a Jackson Cab(for guitars...studio gear is a whole nother ball of wax!)with G12t's best rig I've ever heard to this day. I was a fool to get rid of it! Thing sounds better than a Mesa for sure. Thick and weighty!
That blacked out Dual Rec looks sick.
Bro! That might be an emergency, take it the Tube Amp Doctor!!
Great sound
That sounds sick dude 😮
OMG I just realized that you have a Crate out Nice!
I love the Espada's sizzle
I wonder if the hot mod works in a soldano or jet city. Rectifier’s and soldano being so similar
Had a brand new Mesa boogie triple rectifier. I had to sell it to pay some relocation bills. Ughh 😢😢. It was Awesome 😎👍💯👋👋🎸🎸 want to buy one again 😊😊✌️✌️
the hermansson modded rectifiers are the best rectifier sound on the planet. misha mansoor, fredrik thordendal, and tramonti all have them.
How about the ksr modded rectifier? That sounded amazing 🤩!! This definitely sounds very mean with legendary tones mod.
Have you played one. I was thinking about sending my tremoverb to KSR to hot rod it.
Where I live I’m lucky if a 5150 iii comes into my guitar center twice a year. So doubtful I ever will.
Have you heard the Hermansson modded rectifiers? My God, man!
Curious to know the serial # of that Rev G? Sounds really great. I have #4769 w nearly the same cosmetics
55xx on this one, don't remember the exact serial
Sweet vid!
I noticed more hum and noise due to the added gain stage. An eq on the loop will yield better tone shaping
The EQ can not do what the hot mod does and vice versa. 2 different things.
WoW! That Works Great! 🤘🏻
What is the low frequency hum in the background is that a normal tube amp thing
To my ears, that mod pushes the Rectifier sound in a more a SLO-100 like direction. Pretty incredible!
Also, what pickups are in the Balaguer? They sound awesome!
I’m pretty sure he has Seymour Duncan distortions in that
Funny thing is the preamp of the rectifier is based on SLO's preamp
When I was in high school I managed to get my hands on a really nice 5150 signature half stack. Didn’t know at the time that it was and is still to this day one of the more popular amps for rock/metal. Well, I wasn’t playing as much and ended up selling it. One of the few real regrets I have in life.
I don't jive with the 5150 voicing at all,as a matter of fact I actually hate the way the sound but I absolutely love the sound of the Mesa Boogie, don't shed a tear because you ain't missing much.grab an old Mesa and you will quickly forget about that old peavey
Sounds dope, never saw one of those before. Is the one you're using in your recto the standard or reverse wired? Site doesn't talk about anything but Marshalls.
Standard wire. We’ve recently updated our compatibility page to include this one (more models to follow as well).
@@LegendaryTonesnice! Do you have an European distributor/seller where I can buy the mod?
@@LegendaryTones Awesome getting a reply from the source. Thanks
17:22 sd-1 wins hands down. that open C was too good with the sd-1.
I dunno, I reckon I get good mileage out of a ten band mxr EQ in the FX loop. Turns any amp into any amp.
I think it all really depends on what the other guitar player is using along with you tbh.
these always looked cool, but early on were only for Marshall.. Do you know if they can be used in a Badlander 100 or Triple Recto multi watt?
Yes to both! Standard version in the Badlander, reverse version in the Multi Watt!
Cool video.
Do you know if this mod works with Rectoverbs (50watters)?
Do you guys think Recs have a "banging a hollow tube" sound on the chugs? With too thumpy a fundamental note chug tone thing going on?
No
It is one of the fullest, most punchy, aggressive and articulate HI gain amps ever made. Why do you think so many companies try and copy it? Why it's the most recorded hard rock and Metal amp in history? There is a reason for this. It's because it is one of the best amps ever made...period. I Rank my Multi watt Dual Rectifier right up there with my KSR Colossus H-100. Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifiers are super special. Gotta play one to understand. Yes they very. Some are good. Some are great, and some have something indescribable and special going on. That's why they are one of the most coveted of all time
Nothing beats the sound of a properly dialed in rectifier.
I think you misspelled Engl Savage
@@insertanynameyouwant5311ehhhhh
@@insertanynameyouwant5311you mean Fryette ultralead?
@@realtruenorth eww absolutely no
Btw Mark series is better than rectifier, if we need to choose from Mesa
@@insertanynameyouwant5311 Fryette spanks anything from ENGL all day. I've had both and as much as the Savage ii sounds brutal, it can't hang with Fryette amps.
Love it!!
hey kyle!!! my friend and i just watched...he has the same recto...what tube position does the mr scary go in...many thanx and cheers brother!!!!
V3
6:32 Front delt exercise right there! The sound is awesome! 🤘
The Mesa JP2C sounds great too. Some say better than a rectifier for e standard thrash
This was about using one if those removable Jose mods.
@BigTyronie I just want him to review the JP and see what he thinks and what kind of settings he uses.
Is this thing why your old multi watt is listed on reverb?
This sounds pretty darn sick if you ask me!
Wonder if it'll work in a three channel recto?
i want to eventually get a dual rec
Does anyone know if this will work with a single rectifier 50? I heard there's some kind of adapter or something you need

Sounds brutal , heavy , grinding , mean 😦
Oh god. I happen to have a Hot Mod V2 and a Rev G Dual. You know what's going to happen right after this video.
Alors tu as testé ? ça fonctionne dans le rev G ?
Also interested in this, I have an old Solano hot mod but I think it does not work on master volume amplifiers. That’s why you need a reverse hot mod like the one on this video, right?
@@vanespedals1023 Well, I know the Legendary Tones Hot Mod was inspired by the Soldano unit, but I don't know how similar they are. As far as the LT one, for a Recto you need the Standard wiring, not the reverse. I tried it today and it works great!
@@TOTO-nr8vu I can't speak French, but yes, it works great on the Rev G!
@@Stinger_1995 thanks
this is just the best video
The sd 1 sounds the best with it imo
I had a reversion C serial # R00149 and had to sell it in 2017 to move from Calif. to Texas. I kick myself almost daily for that sale. Bought it for $1300 in 2016 and sold it on Reverb for $2800. Today 9/2023 this amp would be on Reverb for something crazy like $25k. I just bought a Dual 3 channel Multi-Watt and to be honest. I really don't notice much difference from the Rev. C and this Multi Watt. I got way WAY more controls to get all kinds of different tones, 100/50 switch for all channels, Rectifier diode or spongy for each channel, foot pedal with loop, mute and the master Output knob takes the over all of all 3 channels down equally as well as the variable solo with button on Footswitch. That's a lot of controls and that's not all of what it can do....
So do I miss my Rev. C ? Not really.....but I'd love to have had it to sell at this market which is over inflated in my opinion and way over hyped.....(Thanks Fluff...lol)
