    Thank you so much! Metal amps are new ventures for me, and amps like the Dual Rectifier are so ubiquitous in music that I almost couldn't pinpoint what their actual sound was, like I could with a Mark series amp or an Orange. This video was very helpful, I was hoping for a video like this and I should have guessed it would come from you. Talented analyst, well done sir.

    Loved this video as an update to the one you made when you got the Single originally. I watched that first video before scoring my Mesa Single Recto Series II this past January for $650, which you mentioned is what you paid for yours years ago! I still git giddy when I think of that score. At that price, it's a lifer in my gear collection.
    I've owned a Trem-o-verb combo years ago as well as a Mini Recto a few years back (both now sold). I started looking for the Mini again last year and saw how crazy the prices got, when I managed to find my Single in the classifieds. This video just reaffirms what I felt when I got my Single -- it's a damn fine Rectifier model if you can pick it up for the price we paid. I am rockin it with an Orange Rocker 30 combo and a Dr. Z Mini Z, along with my Axe FX FM-3, all of which get used with my OG Mesa Thiele Cab (first version with EVM), I really don't need any more amps.
    Killer videos dude, me and my daughter watched em and she digs the Recto tone!

    This was a great comparison, thank you for taking the time. I can clearly hear that the Dual is sound a little better but not by far. I've learned a lot here also. I own a 2005 Single Recto and love it. I'm hitching to get a Badlander but at that price, I just can't justify the purchase. I'll wait another 10 years and see how the used market looks like then.

  • @clipfishcarsten

    Great video man. Thankfully, finally someone who sheds some realistic light on the "revision" hype that people started around those rectos. After going through the effort of building my own clone and tuning it to my taste after seeing and working myself through the different schematics, it's fair to say that, let alone a few differences here and there, the Multiwatt rectos are 99.9% of what one would ever need who is searching for the Rectifier tone. I own a Rev F Triple myself which I bought years ago to study the circuit, and I am shocked that people try to sell Rev C-Fs for as much as 5k€ over here. Basically, you are then paying more than double the price of a retail Multiwatt Dual Rec for a device with attached power cable, sometimes poorly aging components (lots of LDRs in the old 2chs) and a Clean channel that was more an afterthought than anything else. The existing sound differences between old Revs, old 3chs and Multiwatts can mostly be broken down to not more than 10 components (different pot values, higher/lower preamp filtering, different bright circuits) and for someone who needs a modern, flexible and durable amp I would never recommend anything else than a Multiwatt - or a Single Rec if the budget is tight, because it can do most of the Rectifier sounds quite as well.

    I have had 3 different dual rectifier 3 channel and one rev g, I have moved on the 3 channel units as I prefer the 2 channel. I always took the sound better/worse thing with a pinch of salt as I believe you can get a good tone out of almost anything but i did find the 3 ch heads actually all sounded different from each other a little, im not sure if it was just drift in the components or something else.. anyway im grabbing a single v2 soon so it will be fun trying and comparing it to my 2 ch head. I am looking for another 3 channel head again, i kinda miss having one around. 😆

      Sometimes, there's only so much that guitar demonstrations can convey about gear. I certainly go off on my tangents, but if I took the time to record and edit me talking about it, then there's a purpose behind it. So many people talk absolutely nothing but fluff about gear or altogether ignore some intangible aspects of products that can only be meaningfully conveyed through spoken review. Thanks for watching!

    Amazing video. I had the holy grail recto rackmount and the tremoverb, a rev f, and now i just rock a single rectifier. all rectifiers sound identical in modern bold diode mode, and the single is light, has a less cluttered and more efficient and streamlined circuit ( the tremoverb and 90s rectos are a bitch when it comes to LDRs, god forbid something goes wrong with the amp and you will pay the tech an arm and a leg to diagnose and work the insanely complicated circuit) and very convenient to move around at an amazing price, way cheaper than a mini recto. the single is a beast and is still a sleeper oddly enough.

    If I recall, on the manual they say that to have the equivalent of the presence on 10:30 in modern mode on Channell 3 you have to crank it all the way up on channel 2. I've owned a Dual and a Triple from 2004 and now iI have a Dual multiwatt. The old 3 channel is darker, the new one is brighter, tighter and the 2 gain channel's presence are almost identical.

    I recently became a Mesa guy in the past year, but I remember in the late 90's I played on rectos in the store and was never impressed at the time, but it was my own ignorance in not knowing how they work versus a more conventional amp. I bought my first Mesa dual recto on a whim on ebay in 2009 for 1500 and it was a Voodoo mods Dual Recto Rev G and just took a chance that maybe this one might change my mind about the Mesa Dual recto amps? I remember getting it in the mail and hooking it up to my Marshall 4x12 with V30's and just randomly dialed it in and was blown away at what I was hearing. Those Voodoo modded Mesa's are in a league of their own. I currently own in addition to said amp two Rev F's dual and triple both killer. A Rackto and a 2010 multi-watt triple recto, two JP2C's Kill amp, a Mark IV, the mesa 2:90 power amp and waiting to get in the mail next week the Mesa Recording Rectifier Preamp( I hope I like it?). All amps sound great in their own right. I thoroughly enjoyed this and you going deep into the Mesa/Boogie Recitifier lore. Keep up the good work \m/

  • @firststep7750
    @firststep7750 Před 2 lety +1

    A little late to the party but I can hear the difference between Diode and Valve rectification:
    Clean Tone: Diode rectification sounds colder and slightly diminishes note sustain. Valve (tube) rectification sounds warmer and slightly increases note sustain making the clean tone sound a little more organic.
    Dirty Tone: Diode rectification adds volume and note clarity. Valve (tube) rectification diminishes the volume and note clarity.
    It took a while to lock onto the differences...they're slight; probably why MESA deleted this option from the design.
    Incredible review.

  • @shealeffler6147
    @shealeffler6147 Před 2 lety +2

    I’m sure somebody already said this but iirc the single vs. dual vs. triple designations were originally related to how many rectifier tubes you’d need to get the required output wattage - hence the dual has two 5U4s, the triple has three, the single obviously has, zero rectifier tubes, because that makes perfect sense, due to how as you mentioned, Mesa has impeccable naming sensibilities,,,

  • @Rocksite1
    @Rocksite1 Před rokem

    On the tube vs. diode rectification, when you were showing the switch itself, the tubes sounded smoother, the diodes brighter, and had more complex resonances. When shown from the front, on evidently a higher gain setting, the tubes sounded considerably quieter, and maybe a bit flubby. On my late 90's Dual Rec, I thought the tubes sounded flubbier. You can take out two of the power tubes, either the inner two, or outer two, in order to have it do 50W.

    I had a 3 channel dual rec but sold it. I loved that amp but it wasn’t get used anymore. Decided to get a single rec not too long after and it’s enough. Doesn’t quite have the same thickness… it’s bright af but it works well and the circuit is simpler, less can go wrong, less tubes to replace so it just makes sense. I also play more of a punk rock sound rather than metal so it works well for me.

    Very nice, my dual rectifier (2004 i think) is my favorite amp i've ever used. It never leaves modern mode. Channel 2 is my favorite but channel 3 is still really good. Like a more edgy version of channel 2, when dialed right.
    Did you have the FX loop on or hard bypassed? I never use the loop and keep it hard bypassed, I've found it sounds much punchier, and clearer with the loop hard bypassed with the rotary knob on the back. These days I run it into a reactive load and reamp using a matrix power amp, so i can have some reverb after the amp and before the solidstate power amp if I want.

    The only difference I could tell with the tube rectification is that it didn’t sound as fixzzy as the diode rectification, but even then I’d probably still prefer the diode rectification because there’s something about that Fizz that makes a Dual Rec sound like a Dual Rec.

  • @shekador
    @shekador Před 2 lety

    with regards to the presence control, it's uneven between the different modes because the way it's implemented is different in each mode so it would be better to have two separate pots with differently optimized tapers. you can have two pots on the same dial, ie concentric, but they would be more expensive to source and the switching circuit would get probably more complex. so it boils down to basic economics of the design, though Mesa's marketing dept would likely frame it differently.

    Watching this makes me want to travel back to early 2000s and stop myself from buying the dual rectifier, I would have saved a lot of money. But that young, dual has to better than single right? I never have heard it compared to a single. Not much CZcams going on those days. I could of definitely got away with the single, playing in small bars and clubs. But it was common to believe you need 100 watts, specially when most people you play with are twice as old and frankly better at the time. Great job man. Dig the background info.

It would've been nice to see a Badlander in this comparison, seeing as it's the only 50w recto currently made and uses different power tubes for what immeasurable difference that makes (especially compared to the other circuit changes), but i understand that money, space, time, and ability to give a damn are not infinite.

    i hear the difference in the rec modes.... tube was more compressed as you would expect.... i think as the note says... el34's may benefit from the tube rectifier....
    there is a head room difference though.

    Strange that you don’t notice that difference between diode and tube rectification. Tube is always darker and more deeper sounding, it feels more elastic when you play to me at least. Not sure which one I prefer though.

      Really good comparison though! Loved it. And the nerdy stuff was really intresting 🤘

    Hey brotha it is said that the triple has the most distortion out of the 3is this true?

    • @PlagueScytheStudios
      @PlagueScytheStudios  Před 11 měsíci +1

      No, the preamps of a triple are functionally identical to the preamps of a dual rectifier of the same generation. If anything, the triples have less power tube breakup at the same output volume since they have an additional 50W of clean power amp headroom versus a dual rectifier.

      @@PlagueScytheStudios Thank you! Do you know if the latest rectifiers have more distortion added?
      I used to have a vintage 2 channel dual rect, but felt like the distortion was very soft

    I've said this before but, Randall Smith himself has said that his original amps were based of a Bassman style circuit.
    They were modded Princeton's but he gutted the circuitry to put Bassman style circuits in.

    Can I ask how they were recorded? Cab or di/ir etc.
    (A video comparing these 2 methods for a Dual Rec would be awesome come to think of it 😁) Thank you ❤

    Also this is a 90s era Single compared with a 2000s Dual. The Series2(2000s era) Single is different yet still. Not just different features, but slightly different tone footprint.

    Single Rectifier=One rectifier tube, Dual Recto = 2 rectifiers, Triple= £ rectifiers. I always thought that was the only plausible explanation.

    I always found it hilarious that bands like Blink 182, Diffuser, Alien Ant Farm used these. Wes Borland as well, but his playing, and use, at least seemed more "appropriate" for the material.
    I don't even like the Rec sound, but this was informative and fascinating attention to detail.

    Maybe next time tune the thing? It would really help. But yeah, SS cut cleaner voltage (bleed through 60Hz AC), The cleaner DC voltage helps because the signal (your guitar) has to fight against the ac at point where the hit that 180 degree suppression. I won't bore myself with all the theory... I never liked theory. In my opinion, you could "theorize" aliens hover over recordings at Sound City studios .... Cna't really prove it.🤣🤣
