Scary mod is derived from the soldano hot mod. And the hot mod was made to turn a stock plexi into a slo without having to drill or solder. If a OD could turn a plexi into a slo no one would ever buy a slo and there wouldn’t be a high gain amp market at all period. OD pedals and tube gain stages are 2 entirely different things. Each have their places but sound and react completely different. Totally agree.

Wow, I haven't even heard anyone mention the band Stryper in at least 20 years. My pops turned me onto them back in the late 80's, which he regretted shortly thereafter, because I drove him crazy trying to learn the Tooth and Nail solo playing the record on repeat for weeks after I first heard them lol. Stryper had a few killer tracks, but they weren't on the same level as Dokken, and more specifically THE George Lynch, so I'm affraid pops was forced to buy me headphones to jam through my 30W Crate combo amp and Jackson EX Rhoads 🤘

I own the other Lynch mod with adjustable gain and deep switch. Run it in my JCM 800 and it damn sure makes a difference over pushing the Amp with a boost pedal. Great vid.
Mr Scary mod is probably the best overall value and best mod that you can do to goose up an amp. It adds an additional tube driven gain stage with extra tube sag for better response and feel.
Extra & True tube driven gain stages - for all those tube purists out there.
Plus, you’re not permanently mauling or destroying your amp by cutting or damaging something: Mr Scary Mod fits into a preamp tube slot & can be removed and undone simply by taking it out of the pre amp tube slot.
It seems like the way to go if you want to mod your amp, without worrying about some guy destroying and/or mauling the insides that could damage something or otherwise ruin the amp’s resale value.
Gonna pick one up and try it in both my JCA20 & JCA100HDM! Hopefully it will improve both and I will end up with two of them.

I started researching the mod after seeing Kyle’s video and ordered mine after seeing your video. This video just made me even more excited as I know how much u love the stealth so this mod must really be good. Ironically with my EMGs I find the Badlander on crush is almost enough gain but I always said to myself if it only had a bit more, so to solve that I would boost it with a ts9, which is nice but u lose some low end. Thanks for doing this.

@@TONEWARSgearshow damn right, i dont think i may need quite as much gain as im running EMG's so i think i will start with the mod on 1 O Clock and see. Im very shocked at how it woke up the crunch channel, i have the same issue as you with the crunch, actually the same issues across the board actually. I love the amp but it needs a little more low end and a little more gain, other than that i love it, mind you i dont have the stealth, i have the iconic and the OG 50 watt 5150 3 so thats what i compare to.

Is it compatible with the TC? I don't see it mentioned on the legendary tones website. That would be pretty cool, because I feel like the TC gets bloated, overly compressed, and thin when cranking the gain past 2-3 o'clock.
I have had my eye on getting a Lynch Mod for some time. Glad to hear people talking about it. I have an adamp1 and it was nodded for an extra preamp tube (3 now). I think this Lynch Mod would be similar and that, to me, is very exciting.
It made my JCM800 2203 come to life and usable at lower/ reasonable volumes. I heard the 3 tube mod is a must for the MP-1!
At the moment i have it on my vx100 super kraken and i am in love . Also works extremely well with jcm900 mkiii 2100.
I have no skin in the game but I like the EVH better. I have sold my soul to modelers so maybe Fractal and Fender will model the Mr. Scary Mod. If not, I will just have to be happy with what I have.
This is all cool, but the Badlander doesn't really need it. I've had mine since launch, it gets plenty of gain on it's own and absolutely crushes with a good overdrive in front. If people need more gain, sure get the Mr. Scary mod, but once you start to multi-track guitars, too much gain compresses so much it can squash your tone. Old Metallica, Anthrax, Dream Theater, etc. sounded so good because they stacked tone-full sounds, not necessarily over-gained sounds.
That's great you can use the magic of multi-tracking to make the Badlander sans Mr. Scary Mod sound amazing on a recording. That advice doesn't help modern metal guitarists playing live with a full band.

However, I would still advise against writing off the Scary mod just because you're already getting all the gain you need. As someone who owns a BL with the scary mod and prefers a less saturated tone, it's not just a way to increase gain (at least I don't use it for that). I set my modded BL to have the same amount of gain as I'd have without the mod. What I get out of it is more aggression/snarl and openness in the high end; literally the opposite of over-saturation. Also, the Deep switch makes the amp push more air which provides a more responsive low end attack that cuts better through a live band mix. The stock Badlander is still a great sounding amp on its own and I do take the mod out every once in a while to enjoy the smoother, sweeter stock tone, but I keep it in most of the time. It's just a bigger, fuller, meaner sound with the mod.
Everybody has a tone in there head that they like! Okay people need to understand that these mod's are great! And if that what its takes to make the amp sound and feel you want from it you are a winner. Tone wars! is real he lets you the good and not so good! and he does not cover up! People stop tell him what to do! I hate that crap! All he is trying to do show us great stuff so we can understand about this stuff. Hey Man i enjoy what you really do. Rock on man.

Badlander sounds a little more compressed...and its great! Stealth has more of a raw tone, but still awsome. Just two great amps here now that the mod is in place.
This is gonna sound insane, but I've been running a Badlander and Mr Scary Mod for about 7-8 month now, but I keep the gain knob on the mod and BL about half way (on both) and I clean boost it with a metal zone. Don't freak out, just try it. I use the EQ on the MT-2 to adjust tone on the way in to get the mid range cocked wah tone, and it sound like an insane steroid boosted 5150. Just try it.
I've also used a Source Audio EQ2 in front in place of the MT2 (sometimes both MT2 and EQ2 adjusted freqs and levels to work) to get the cocked wah tone. I like the cocked wah tone to get extra cut in a band mix, which helps in some bars.
@xiwiwix If you like boosting with a stock metal zone definitely try out a Keeley modded metal zone if you get a chance. I bought one after reading Cannibal Corpse was using one back in the day with their Rectifiers. I use one with my Triple Rec Multi Watt.

@@huddleshuddles7360 It's the 1x12 combo with uk v30 from 2003, t something cone. I'll use that and sometimes I'll use my EVM12L speaker, I forget what the date is on that one. Not all EVM12L's are equal. I own 4 and they all sound extremely different. Side note, my favorite EVM is my Early 80's EVM15L. Has a lot of openesss but it's not as sharp on the top end as any of my EVM12L's.
@@huddleshuddles7360 It came with Creamback 65 2021 model I think. It's really midrange honky/glassy, but once re-eq'd sounds amazing in the combo.
Wonder what's that thing would do to a JVM HJS (like the tone and quietness of the HJS version while I miss the extra gain feom the stock JVM, sometimes I wish I could mesh those 2 amps into 1 ! Might be the solution here !).
Pop it in that red Freidman on your shelf. Considered for my PT-20 I never use anymore.

Good question. I would make sure it's compatible with the Stiletto b4 you install it. You can always check their website for compatibility and if your amp isn't listed on there, you can reach out to Daniel and I'm sure he'll get back with you very quickly
I installed one on my badlander 50. Tried to install it on the 25 combo but it wouldn't fit (for easier practice situations) so instead I just bought the badlander 25 head and the recto 1x12 and will put it in there. I believe it will fit room wise on the 25 head.

Could the Mr Scary Mod fit in a PRS Archon?
have you ever tried a tubed pre amp pedal? im wondering if the mr scary would be the same idea? running more power into the gain stage's. or if it's just a thing on it own because it looks like your doubling up the power at a certain gain stage in the amp it might give you more control?
I have switched pre amp tubes in my amps before, its actually pretty crazy how it can effect your amount tonally. switched out some jj's for tad's. im guessing one of the tubes in the mr scary just bring's out the richness in the badlander that was originally missing.
The mod goes in the v2 position. It have a different effect than putting a boost (tubed or otherwise) in front of the amp
I'm not 100% certain of the compatibility with your particular version of the mod, but I'm curious if this would work in that JEL. Would be really interested in hearing that if so.

The Mr Scary mod only works with certain amp platforms. Mostly Marshall platforms but just recently discovered to work in certain Mesa amps and some Marshall clones. Probably won't work in the EVH.

Question i already have a 5150 iconic and i love it but im thinking about grabbing a 5150iii stealth would the 50w be a noticeable upgrade or should i go straight for the 100w i only really play in my bedroom at a reasonable volume and mic it up for recording and i tend to play in all tunings but tend to stay in d standard, drop c and drop a and i dont know if i should save up a bit more and go with the 100w or just pick up the 50w would love your opinion thanks!!!
Get the 100. Bigger , fuller sound. And the Easter eggs are great
For what it's worth...I returned my iconic head for the 50 watt stealth and it's a night a day difference. The iconic is a great amp but the stealth is smoother sounding. And although the 100 watt stealth a awesome amp, I wouldn't personally spend that much money on it, I'd pay a little less for a used one though.
Wonder what the mod would do in the Lynx or the stealth or the Astro?
I will never understand to concept of " that's not the right tone". I swear musicians especially guitarist can be worse than women at a beauty parlor type thing. I'm an amp tech part time and I always say the same thing every time. If it sounds good to you then it's the right tone even if I feel it's straight ice picking or mud shoveling tone. Much too often we treat it like a linear math equation.

The instructions are different depending on which amp you're using. They usually come with a instruction sheet.Try looking on their website and see if the instructions are on there for that particular amplifier

Stealth is more aggressive. The mk7 has 3 modes that are great (clean, mk4 & iic+) the rest are a waste IMHO
Can it work in the Evh?? Obviously the red would prolly go to shit, but I have the el34 100watter and the blue channel is the one I usually use most. I like it boosted, and other days I like the more percussive sound of it unboosted. But like the Badlander crunch, everything is there, just needed a touch more gain and it’d be perfect. For me anyway.
Good question. I'm not sure if it would work with that amplifier or not. You might want to check with the manufacturer on that. In my opinion, I think the blue Channel boosted sound amazing on that amplifier though
Question, I have an old Marshall DSL 2000 50w head that I always thought sounded thin and not enough fullness...I was about to sell it. Do you think the Scary Mod would wake this head up?
I think that mod would wake up any amp. Go to their website and make sure you find the right one that is compatible with your amp and try it out

I thought the Stealth sounded a bit better. The Mesa sounded too compressed, and not as musical to me. Just my opinion, and of course nothing beats being in the room with the amps!

I haven't compared them against each other but so far, I love this one. I put it in the V2 slot

When I was looking into these, the consensus seemed to be go scary mod. No regrets!
I like it stiff unlike those Limp Boost Karen’s. IMO with the Gibson Merger, inflation to already over priced gear (sour about the 1k hike on JP Mark), transformer shortage debacle, and the fact it took Mesa 20 plus years to finally listen to their customers about the rectifier series I have really have been turned off from Mesa -a company I once loved exclusively. While I kept my custom Mesa Cabs won’t own another head of theirs again. If anything dish out the cash on the used Mesa stuff right now- seriously 1200 for a Road King was unimaginable 5 years ago. Or even their famous Stereo 90 power amp.
Seriously though- 2800 for a 100 wat bad lander and 320 for the Lynch mod to come relatively close to sounding as good as the Blue channel on the EVH… which is 2400. EVH also has seen a significant rise from inflation, but they have remained consistent and the stable to high gain. James Brown knows what’s up. The Naysayers also talked shit on the Iconic which is an amazing amp. You should check out James browns OD Tight Drive.
I think they actually sound fairly similar now. Both sound so good that it's hard to pick one.
Agreed. IMHO the Badlander was a bit more saturated and the EVH was a bit dryer.
@@TONEWARSgearshow the stealth sounded bigger/ fuller, but both sounded great. Huge Mesa fan, mostly of the Mark series! I recently picked up a 100W stealth, and while it's awesome, there's something in the mids that sounds off/ harsh compared to the OG 5153 100W. Sounds like they shifted the mids frequency, as in where the mids sit, when adjusting the knob.
I think the biggest difference I could hear over CZcams was the badlander seemed to have a higher mid frequency vs the Stealth's slightly lower mids. It's crazy how much of a difference this mod makes though.
Also, how is the clean channel with this mod installed? Still usable, or is there any change at all?
Jared. Could you please try this mod on the Redseven The Dirt? That imy amp, and i would love to hear how that would sound befor I order one.
I'll have to look into that and see if that mod would work for the amp. There's a couple different versions of that mod and the one I have may not work with it. When I have time, I'll try to check it out

@@josephrusso7069 it MIGHT. I'm not 100% sure. I think as long as you put it before the phase inverter, it can work.
Someone tried telling me in one of the large gear groups on FB that a Mr Scary Mod is not needed when a good EQ can be put in the loop. The thing about that is I have not had good experiences with putting an eq in the loop of a Rectifier and that might be due to the type of loop they have.
Hey Nick, thanks for commenting. Trust me, the mod is much better than an eq in the loop. I've tried the eq in the loop with this amp b4 and it doesn't even come close the what this mod will do.

@@pressman1788 Mesa Rev G Dual Rectifier. I had it for a few months and in the end realized it wasn't for me and traded it for a PRS Archon 100 instead.

100% will work great. Same idea - you can turn down the preamp gain to get more note definition and then add the mod back in to get the sustain back in.

Badlander might have more gain, but does not sound better IMO. It's a bit thin and missing some upper end sizzle. Sounds good, but not better.

Don't listen to the nonsense in this thread, the Stealth has more gain than anyone could ever need. They can mod whatever amp they want, it will never make me dislike or get tired of the sound coming out of the Stealth.

In my opinion, the Badlander is too fizzy and mid heavy for my taste.
Yeah theres a huge audible difference with the mod . Even with youtube compression it’s easy to discern . You’d have to be a toane doughnut to not respect the scary mod
