- No. 1 Alabama faced its toughest test of the season and barely escaped on Saturday night, edging No. 7 Florida 52-46 in the 2020 SEC Championship Game to capture its ninth conference title and fifth in the last seven seasons. The game lived up to its high-octane hype at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith recovered Florida's onside kick attempt with 2:09 left to end a furious charge that made a game out of what once looked like a blowout. The Gators went 75 yards on 10 plays and hit paydirt to get within striking distance on a remarkable 22-yard touchdown toss from Kyle Trask to Kyle PItts. Florida coach Dan Mullen then decided to go for two with Trask running in for the conversion. Trask finished with 408 yards, four total touchdowns and a fumble.
That after Crimson Tide QB Mac Jones hit Smith for a 15-yard touchdown with 4:59 in the game to push Alabama's lead to 52-38 and put pressure on the Gators. Jones finished with 418 yards, five touchdowns and an interception.
Alabama got things rolling quickly by going 70 yards on nine plays on its first drive of the game. Touchdown drives of 31 yards, 73 yards, 70 yards and 78 yards followed during a first half in which punter Charlie Scott never saw the field.

Florida had a great 2nd half but that's exactly why they lost. I said it from the beginning that if they don't play all 60 minutes they wouldn't beat Bama. This is coming from a Gators fan but we'll get better next year.

@@bloodlover1987 It's a shame because I grew up on Alabama playong defense and running the ball. They still run the ball but ever since Pruitt left in 2018 to go to UT, the defense has been soft.
You have to remember that FL has a great NFL QB, wide receivers and tight ends. Alabama has also a great NFL QB, running back and receivers. So it's gonna be hard to stop them.
@@paulrobinson3213 Part of that is because of our offense. The defense used to get to sit on the sideline for a whole quarter while we inched our way down the field. Now we're in the endzone after 5 plays so the defense is out there a lot more.
I gotta say, I'm really impressed with this gators offense. The defense did what they could, but lets be honest here, your not stopping this Bama offense. Florida's D did their best. This whole team showed a lot of heart. If the 2015 gator team had this offense, they would of won the National Championship no question about it. This title game will be a classic. At least our offense could score points unlike Georgia from last seasons championship. As long as Dan Mullin is the coach, Florida will be up their every year.

Dude it blew my mind, I haven't been that flabbergasted over a call since the Fail Mary in the Packers Seahawks game a few years ago. They kept saying he had control when the ball wasn't even in his hand. I was just sitting there like "is this really happening right now?"
