    Godzilla was already a monster before the bomb… he was irradiated latter by a bomb test.. that’s why it is is pissed and way bigger.

    The reason the plane had to be that special fighter (and yes, the Shinden was real) is because it was the only Japanese plane to have an ejection seat. The mechanic didn't put that in, he discovered it was already there. Remember neither the pilot or the mechanic had seen one of these planes before, so they wouldn't have know before hand. Anyway, if you bailed out the conventional way, you would have been sliced and diced by the propeller. So seriously, if he was going to do what he did at the end and survive, it had to be the Shinden. Plus it looks super cool. (Little historical note, very few planes had ejection seats in WWII. The few that did were, like the Shinden, almost certain death to simply jump out of. The German fighter, the Dornier Pfeil was the same way, ejection seat to clear the rear facing propeller).

    If you watched the original 1954, Godzilla emerged as the ocean nuke testings in the Pacific, way before atomic bombs in Japan. Only seaside villagers had encounters and folklores about it at the time. City dwellers in Tokyo didn’t know until the landfall.
    Also, as the loser in WWII, Japanese government was disarmed and there was no military to deploy to fight Godzilla. Hence the civilian efforts.

    The Godzilla at the beginning that's much smaller is the one that the Islanders had a legend about. That creature gets mutated and becomes the giant monster we see later.

    The reason it had to be the "special" plane is because the rest of the fleet was decommissioned. It also had an ejection seat where the regular planes did not.

    Thanks for the great review. Hearing you questions, I felt I can give answers to some of them as I watched the movie twice already in Japan. (If I watch another time, I might be able to answers other questions as well ... but I don't have money to do so for now.) As I understood...I mean, these are my guesses from the movie...around the Odo islands there was already a rumour of a strange creature among locals, like the case of the Loch Ness Monster, which was known as Godzilla. At some point, the movie suggested that this creature mutated into even a bigger monster due to radiation by Operation Crossroads. As for the government notice to the public, I got an impression that the government hid the overall truth and pretended there was no serious trouble approaching until the very last minute. Otherwise, people must have been evacuated by the time Godzilla hit Ginza. Only when Godzilla really set foot did the government gave warnings ... simply because it wasn't possible to hide it anymore. (This is typical of the Japanese government. For example, upon Great East Japan Earthquake, the government kept details secret in order to avert panic among citizens for quite a long time. As a result, many failed to escape from radiation contamination at an early stage. Knowing that, I got an impression that the movie is criticising this kind of behaviour of the Japanese government.) And Japan at that time was under the occupation of the Allied Powers, mainly the USA. I assume the JP government had not much freedom. Japan was demilitarised and there was no Japanese army to save citizens, either. (Actually, it is still so in some sense. The JP constitution, established after WW2 by GHQ staff members, prohibits Japan from having any military force. Therefore, current-day Japan is still without any army. It can have only self-defence force.) That's why they were all from private companies, formerly working for the Japanese Navy. (I forgot how they brought those battleships. I need to watch it again to figure it out.) As for the letters, since Shikishima wasn't able to figure out Tachibana's address, he instead wrote letters to others who might have connections to Tachibana. There, he wrote all death on Odo island was due to Tachibana, completely disgracing his name. Judging from the later conversation between Shiksima and Tachibana, people who received these letters contacted Tachibana, either to blame him or inquire about the truth. This is why he got those letters in his hands when they met again. As for the deep sea fish, the movie implied at some point something like radiation of Godzilla killed those deep sea fish instantly, which was why so many dead fish were floating, swelled up by less water pressure. Overall, I think the movie was very well written.

    I am Japanese. I've already seen this movie three times. Director Yamazaki said in an interview that in the scenes in which Akiko appeared, everything centered around her.
    When you're in a good mood, watch that scene. When I feel like I'm about to cry, the actors will match the lines for that scene.
    She is 2 years old and in a sense she is an amazing actress.

      Not Japanese but have studied the language enough that the second viewing I went in focused on really listening to what was said. While I feel it suffered some over translation(you don’t need to “translate” every noise! Especially when working with the “words” of with a young child) but it was still fanatastic. I’m already looking forward to the weekend and having the time to see it again.
      Hope it’s still in theaters just past that to see it with my father who knows no Japanese and isn’t big on films filled with subtitles but I still think he’d enjoy this.

    11:49 this harkens back to the original. Godzilla was a Legend passed on Odo Island, almost like a mythological God of sorts. But in reality, he was a Dinosaur like creature. Although its ambitious, the Dinosaur probably wasn't even seen by them, in fact its most likely hes only called "Godzilla" due to the association of Odo Island and his godlike presence. Hes a product of the bomb because the bomb is what mutated him, its the reason why hes as big and powerful as he is in the movie, and why hes so angry.

    The reason she got a job was because when his coworkers came over, he stated that they are not together and that she just started living with her, which made her feel like a burden. That’s why she went out to find a job so she can support herself and not feel like a burden since they aren’t actually a couple. And the mechanic didnt built the ejector seat on that plane, it was build with one already. It was a newer plane compared to the old ones the kamikaze made. You can tell when the mechanic was inspecting the plane he noticed something in the back, which is the ejector handle.

    The plane Koichi flies at the end of the movie is a real plane. It was a prototype that was never actually used during the war. The U.S. government confiscated all of Japan's fighter planes after the war, so the only fighter plane left was this unused prototype. And the mechanic wasn't the one who installed the ejection system. It was already outfitted with an ejection system, which meant that perhaps Japan was rethinking the whole "kamikaze" tactic because it obviously wasn't working for them.

    The small Godzilla on Odo Island was just a dinosaur that lived in the water of the islands. He was just a normal creature but the film shows a quick scene of an American Nuclear test with a quick shot of Godzilla's face engulfed in the nuclear blast. That's what creates the giant nuclear blasting , regenerating Godzilla later in the film

  • @JaePharos

    Godzilla was only known by the locals of Ode island. It was an urban legend that was just beginning to spread so very few citizens of Tokyo would know about it nor believe it to be true. Also, he gets bombed during the bikini atoll experiments and mutates.

    I just saw this film earlier today and I felt like it was actually a commentary on the exploitation of war, the so-called “nuclear family” (especially making comments on child welfare when the children are orphaned with NO surviving biological parents very early in life) and even nuclear weapons, which I feel this film really is more anti nuclear and anti war than anything else. Great review too! To answer your question about why Japan couldn’t defend itself is because after World War II, the United States demilitarized Japan. Which is also why they had to use that one plane. It was one of the the only ones that the United States hadn’t confiscated. The tanks and ships that we see Japan asking for and the ones that were used against Godzilla were handed over by the UN because again everything Japan had in regards to military was confiscate after World War II by the US and UN. The one thing that didn’t make sense for me is that during the time Godzilla Minus One is taking place the United States is supposed to be occupying Japan.

    some points of clarification: 1. Odo island Goji was a pre atomic version. The island inhabitants (NOT the Japanese mechanics) knew about Godzilla and had over the centuries built up an understanding with it). There is a transition sequence from the montage that shows nuclear testing in the south Pacific and a shot of Godzilla roaring, symbolizing his mutation into a far more imposing creature. 2. The "general" was ex Navy, not an acting officer. Sure it's a little but thin in terms of excluding any Americans from the story as there was a large US occupation post war, but the filmmakers wanted to focus on this being a Japanese tale (heaven forbid). I'm not asserting that Minus One is a perfect film, but it's a solid movie that is far far better than most from this genre. I would have to go back to 1954 Gojira in terms of quality and content.

I thought the story was incredible, very emotional and I felt it really captured a lot of what people must have felt like. Dr. Nora’s speech about the government’s willingness to have people needlessly die was so poignant. I felt like a lot of the things said and the story can be applied to a lot of things regarding the political state of the world throughout history and even now. I was blown away.

    Thank you for always noting all the plot holes. I’m happy for all the praise this movie is getting I feel it’s necessary to discuss the cinema sins.

    Going to see it on tomorrow here in the UK so buzzing to see it at my local cinema (my mum doesn't want to see it but then again me and my mum have got unlimited cards for our local cinema) Hollywood take note you don't need big budget films to break even Hollywood WISHES they could make a film this good at even 1/2 of their budget and still make a profit (even the director Takashi Yamazaki even said he wished the budget was $15m)

    What surprises me, is you guys never heard of ejector seats? Fighters jets and planes have them. Kamikaze planes did not have them because their duty is to die. The new plane was built with one. The mechanic didn't invent it. He noticed it and pointed it out the pilot.
    Every one of your questions are answered in the movie. You guys may want to watch it again.

    Ok so what I'm hearing is that Godzilla goes though major growth spurts after the first appearance..... his initial evaluation and even appearance from the deep may have been a result of South Pacific nuclear testing before Hiroshima happened

    I don’t get why people rag on 2014’s Godzilla. I love the monsterverse Godzilla, but this movie was AMAZING.the visuals and the score were well matched.

    I liked this but I couldn't help but feel it was like a Jaws type take on Godzilla.

    • @aumelb
      @aumelb Před 6 měsíci

      Not at all. It was a mix of the original 1954 movie's take and an allegory of the monumental issues that Japanese lived through during and immediately after WW2.

    • @anramsay
      @anramsay Před 6 měsíci

      @@aumelb I got that but I felt with the whole people on a small boat hunting something from the sea that you don't always see I got those vibes a bit.

    • @aumelb
      @aumelb Před 6 měsíci +1

      @anramsay yes there was some similarity to Jaws but it was just one episode in the movie with a lot of other action sequences.
      In both movies, the monster is a killing machine but the Jaws' shark is more cunning and devious. Minus One Godzilla is extremely powerful but pretty mindless, like a force of nature.

    I thought the pause after each step was odd and robotic.
    Was Godzilla treading water at the end. Looks like he is just standing there.
    I did like the way the spines acted like control rods in a nuclear reactor.
    I believe the monster on the island was Godzillasaurus. The US H-bomb? experiments radiated him and he grew.
    I thought the battleships looked strange cutting through the water and moved too quickly.
    The black growth on the female lead's neck at the end indicated that she survived by merging with Godzilla cells and could be doomed to become a human-lizard hybrid.
    All the guys on the boats at the end will likely die due to radiation exposure.

    The ending definitely felt like a producer stepped in or something and was like, "Hey, we need a happier, traditional ending here [even though we saw this woman getting obliterated lol]."

    I saw this last night and LOVED it.
    I was hesitant that the movie would gloss over why Japan is in such a state, or worse, make it out to be the big bad Americans at fault, but damn…this movie clearly showed the shame that Japan had to have been in this war and the reason they were in such a bad state was due to their own government.
    I don’t remember the exact line but when the young kid wanted to join at the end the war the vet said no, you’re not coming. And says something like, “You should be proud you never had to go to war.”
    Too many young American kids just love to hate on America and it was nice to even see in this movie that there was zero animosity towards the US.
    Zero wokeness. Thank god.

    The moral of the story is, it could be worse?

    • @aumelb
      @aumelb Před 6 měsíci

      The moral of the story - Japanese pulled themselves together and managed to overcome deep trauma and overwhelming sense of shame for the sake of the future generations. Godzilla represents all the shit that happened in Japan and to Japan in 1940s. The main character defeats it as well as his own demons (which Godzila is an embodiment of) and finds in himself a will to live.
