Lore wise, their synchro is too powerful and scary the ice barrier tribe tried to seal it. And then future support looks like they envy of how other archetype used their synchro monster and started to "attempt" to abuse it.

This archetype and I have quite the history. Brionac was the first Ice Barrier monster I pulled from HA1 when it first came out, and that resulted in me hunting down every Ice Barrier card that exists😂 The most notable “…woah dude” moment, was when a friend of mine and I bought two HA4 packs, but instinctively I told him,” Give me your pack.” He did and I held it and mine for a few seconds and handed his back and said: “Trishula is in both of them.” He opened his and first card was Trishula. He looked at me all shocked and said, “….no f-ing way…” Then I opened and flipped it over, there again was Trishula.
Dueling wise though before Brio and Trishula’s banning, people who played avoided playing with me because more times than not I ended up restricting whomever I was dueling against from being able to do anything. So they either decked out or I board wiped them and attacked for game.
I still have them (and of course the new ones), can’t believe it has been 12 years since first getting my Brio.

Thanks for the video. I love to see someone talk about gungnir so much. I love Ice barriers cause of their aesthetics, and because i like the playstyle. Most people think its bad, horrible, or whatever, but in all honesty, there are ways, at least in the meta at that time, where you can completely shut down your opponent.
For example, if you have defender, secret guards and the dai-sojo on the field your ice barrier monsters are immune to spell and trap cards, cannot be targetet by monster effects and cannot be attacked with monsters, that have higher attack, then their defence stats. This only leaves very niece cards, like sasuke samurai, or non targetting monster effects like rose dragon for your opponent. And even when he wipes your board, prior of the ice barrier turns surface into monster reborn for ice barriers, so its pretty fast back on board. But there are holes in the stun effects that can be used to break through, and they are pretty slow. And for me this is good game design. Its not the most powerful, and it does not prevent your opponent from playing, it just protects you from your opponents effects. And if you wanna have this defensive playstyle this is (in my oppinion) how an archetype should be designed.
Its sad, that it gets reduced to its powerful synchro monsters so much.

You know what's funny? You could kind of consider Adamancipator Risen - Dragnite to be a spiritual sucessor to Brionac. Sure, it's full potential can only be realize in rock decks and it's mostly known for its omni-negate, but not a day goes by that I don't appreciate it's non-targeting bounce effect. No matter what crazy new boss monster that can't be targeted or destroyed comes out (i.e. Dragoon and recently, Destroy Phoenix), I can always take solace that my boss monster with the 3rd/4th best monster removal in the game can deal with it.

I'd like to make a point for the Generals as whole, they were really good at the time of debut, being hurt by being high level main deck monsters:
    • Gantala special summons an Ice Barrier from the GY every end phase.
    • Grunard is an extra normal summon for an Ice Barrier Monster during the main phase on a soft once per turn.
    • Raiho can be used to really good results. If the opponet resolves a monster effect activated on the field, then they must discard a card or the effect is negated.

You cant attack with Dewdark directly if you summon him with Revealers effect and she is still on the field... but Ive been playing Ice Barriers in Master Duel (Plat/Synchro Fest) and I have been having a fun time with then... there are actually some decently strong tuner effects with Defender of the Ice Barrier and Revealer having a decent 2 card synergy if your opponent hits Maxx C and ends your turn you at least have decent effect protection from Beat Sticks. Also Raiho has a helpful effect that can destroy your opponents hand advantage by making them discard everytime they activate a monster effect. Dewlorean is still a great combo extender, if you can discard Ice Barrier you can send any lv 5 or higher IB boss monster from the deck, to the GY then to the hand... and this makes the set up for Wayne/Raiho/Gantala/Dai-Sojo really easy. Gantala and Dai-Sojo are also kinda OP other than needing to be tribute summoned, the effects to special summon from the GY during both players End Phases, and making it so your IB monsters are immune to all spell/trap effects are kinda worth it to run 1 of copies in the deck IMO...
