  • I’ve been asked multiple times by various folks (specifically my customers) how I take rough warped and twisted lumber to clean straight lumber so I thought I would make a short video explaining my process beginning at the jointer. Keep in mind every detail in this process is not included in the video but it should be a good reference. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to leave a comment. Also, while you’re here, like, subscribe and share if you feel I deserve it. Take care and God bless.

Great explanation. Have jointed rather blindly and relied on repeating steps to get square and flat. The way you can end up with a tiny tapper to a board by jointing without thickness planing down enough is still weird. Planer for flat wide sides and table saw for the opposite small edge. As long as I do that I get uniform. Scrub hand plane for high spots or there many wonky cutoffs I buy from lumber supplier.
Love looking at the background. Your shop amazes me. Going to rewatch the tour and other videos. Been two years. Maybe enough has changed for another tour.

Thank you! I agree on the taper! The longer the board the worse the taper can be! It has been a while since I did a shop tour but i think i made a short recently with somewhat of an update without any words… what scrub plane do you have? I have yet to get one… i will se if i can find the video and add the link for you…

@@HurdCrafters Veritas scrub plane. For 162 USD it is fantastic. My buddy had converted a #5 and without filing the mouth open or finding a 5 1/4 narrower plane it is not ideal. Veritas has gone up a few dollars since I bought it about five years ago. 179 with PMV11 or 159 with high carbon steel.

@@HurdCrafters I have used it more on preparing cuttoff drops for the planer than actually flattening to hand plane. I go through the shorts shelves at my local lumber place once every 1-2 months. Sometimes 2 inch thick drops in there. 8/4
