Dead Space is one of the greatest games of all time, but I've never actually had the pleasure of playing it. The brand new remaster of the original game on my PS5 has not disappointed and definitely freaked me out. That being said, I was also intrigued by the medical aspects of Isaac Clarke's journey, whether it be the countless accidents, anatomy of the necromorphs, or even the hallucinations that appear to be happening on board. Let me know down below what game you like me to play next!

Isaac knew how to build the plasma cutter, because it's his job. He's an engineer and was brought on the mission to get the space station back online. This is the reason why most of his "weapons" are really improvised maintenance tools. A plasma cutter is something he'd use in his day-to-day work cutting open panels and other surfaces to access the inner mechanics he's supposed to work on.

@@ljeans531 Some things ARE hallucinations, but the Necromorphs aren't. Neither is the Ishimura.
The Artifact responsible for the Necromorph outbreak is simply called "The Marker". It's an ancient object that looks sort of like a spiral obelisk.
It essentially radiates waves of energy that can cause dementia, hallucinations, and eventually, Necromorph transformation. If your mind is strong enough to resist the Marker, you won't transform.
The Marker has a counter for this scenario as well. It creates creatures that act like a Wifi booster. They stab their proboscis into the head and radiate strong waves from the Marker directly into the brain. There is no way to resist this. Victims of this transform within seconds.
The goal of the Marker is to assimilate the entire galaxy. It does that by using all of the biomass on the planet it takes over and turns the ENTIRE thing into a living radio broadcaster. It also has the ability to move. They're called Brethren Moons. They're so dangerous that being within the same system as one WILL cause hallucinations and most likely transformation.
The only way to stop the Marker from spreading throughout a planet is by freezing the entire planet, which can be seen in Dead Space 2. Freezing all life on a planet will render the Marker's efforts useless.

Yes, the attention to detail in "Dead Space" is definitely one of its strengths. The fact that Isaac Clarke interacts with his environment in a believable way, such as by looking at holographic projections or following the movements of Necromorphs, helps to create a sense of immersion for the player. These small details help to make the game world feel more alive and believable, and they can also add to the tension and atmosphere of the game.
It's clear that the developers put a lot of thought and effort into creating a world that is both believable and terrifying. The attention to detail in the animations, sound effects, and environmental design all contribute to the overall experience of playing "Dead Space." These little details help to create a sense of immersion that draws the player deeper into the game world, making the experience all the more memorable and impactful.

What makes DS so interesting is how the Marker knows how to use you to its advantage, dead or alive. If you managed to survive alone for so long in the middle of an outbreak, chances are the Marker is letting you live to do what it wants. If you're dead, it can have so many uses for your body, and if your body is too damaged it will just fuse what's left of you into something bigger
Better yet is how it infect dead tissues, it doesn't use viral spores or something like that. It uses radiation that turn dead tissues into necromorph tissue (which can also infect living tissue), and give living people hallucinations which often turn them against each other. With those 2 factors, the Marker can spread like wildfire.

I would be curious if you would be able to do a video on fear in games like this. Why some people are terrified of playing a horror game but can watch a horror movie without issue, or vice versa. Or, just don't feel fear from either of them. What makes one game scary while another similar game is not?
I love playing Dead Space, but it's never been scary to me. I just chuckle and shoot all the things that want to hurt me.

The reason why horror games can feel more or less scary is because of immersion, you are in control of what is going on and going to happen.

@@sandeboe While that is true, why are some folks like me seemingly immune to it? Horror games, movies etc... are some of my favorite things but I've never found them scary while a friend of mine, the second a necromorph shows up he's screaming his head off. I've always been fascinated how everyone handles these kinds of things differently

Isaac Clarke is an engineer, that's how he knew how to assemble the plasma cutter. The "marker"(the alien artifact) emits a signal that drives people insane and makes them extremely violent. This creates more "biomass" for the necromorphs. At least, that's how the lore goes.

There is an option in the menu that not only tells when a particularly violent or disturbing moment is coming, but also obscures the scene entirely when it happens. I understand the intention, but it doesn't make sense for 2 reasons:
    1. It's Dead Space, so you should already know what happens when you opt in.
    2. Many of these moments are plot-important or give clues on what to do next, so the audio is left intact, meaning you hear everything but don't see it.

That calmness is deliberate. Especially in space but in any emergency situation, you want the responders to stay calm. Panicking can cause a responder to become a victim. And when a potential patient is already stressed you want to remain calm so they have confidence in you. This helps them focus and listen. If you show stress they get more stress. This is taught to anyone who has been trained in first responder.
Fun fact Apollo 13 was over dramatized because if they had portrayed the actual way everyone involved acted (they actually had recordings of everything) the audience would have slept through most of the movie. The astronauts and ground crew all remained calm and professional throughout.

Fun fact, necro tissue can be considered nearly 100% muscle, and there are no mental limiters placed on the use of said muscles, since they control themselves by cosmic means.

Nothing is added to the body’s mass when a corpse is turned into a Necromorph. Instead, the existing tissues and bones are recombined and restructured into the horrific monstrosities you see here. The games even have collectible documents and audio recordings where some people describe watching the process of corpses turning into Necromorphs. They describe the sight of their bones, muscles, and tendons being twisted into claws, tails, etc.
Also, the Necromorphs aren’t sick. They’re dead. They’re basically space zombies.

The delirium is close but the marker leaves its mark on people's minds when they are exposed to it, it heavily imprints itself onto its victims only way to really resist is to have a natural resistance/immunity or to be smart enough to withstand the hallucinations and in that case it will heavily scar your mind to the point you may consider building your own marker with the blueprints the marker has basically downloaded into your mind to help the spread of nercomorphs to eventually lead to convergence and create a brethren moon which is the end goal honestly its quite interesting how they work especially considering humanity is basically the last to be hit with this scourge

  • @Rakshiir

    In terms of the marker:
In the lore, the marker was sent to earth by aliens (to simplify). It was responsible for the end of the dinosaurs if I recall correctly, and directly influenced life on the planet.
The idea is that the marker in general are used to "guide" a race to a certain point where they need more energy (due to overpopulation ect), so when they then find the marker, they want to use it as an energy source.
But at the same time it emits an energy field (so the radiation theory does hit the mark) that does cause issues. Most people start to have issues sleeping, start becoming paranoid and aggressive due to hallucinations, basically either killing others or themselfs at some point. The marker can then turn those dead people into necromorphs, also creating the infectors to increase the number of necromorphs faster.
I also saw other videos where there is some talk about how the necromorphs could form from a human body, obviously its not completly logical, but overall I find these analysis interesting.
