- Remedy Entertainment have recently released their Q1 2024 earnings report and have shown off that Alan Wake 2 has failed to make back its budget even after six months on the market. This could spell disaster for the game, but it's not as hopeless as it may seem.

It’s a niche game with niche appeal. Not surprised it’s sold so few units. Let’s see how it goes if it makes it to steam.
It should have much broader appeal. If so much of the market wasn’t simple and narrow-minded in their focus around games.
The game has plenty to enjoy for almost all types of gamers if they gave it even half a chance.

@@SuperLekan12 I’m aware of that, but Alan Wake 2 SHOULD have broader appeal. If people weren’t so conservative and in some people’s cases simplistic with which Hanes they even give a chance, it wouldn’t be.
I’m not calling people narrow-minded because they like different things than me. I’m calling them narrow minded, because many of them actually would enjoy the game, it’s just they don’t even give it a try, because it’s not in their 3 favourite genres they’ve played all their life. Or it’s not in the 5 mainstream franchises they follow exclusively.
Alan Wake 2 deserves to be popular, it’s very well made and neither survival horror or elaborate narratives need to be all that niche. In fact, in some ways they’re already not.
I’m not saying Alan Wake 2 should be as popular as COD or fifa. But it should absolutely be far more popular than it is.
I agree I never thought they would man Alan Wake 2. Let alone do as much work as they did on graphics and story. It was doomed to not profit well its really sad because this is how a good game is done.... Those days are behind us. Its all about money now.
No steam release or physical console release.... epic gets what they deserve if they really wanted to sell the game it would be on every possible storefront and displayed in stores.

Well, some kind of a home made problem ... release it on other platformas than just Epic would help a lot I think. A physical release might have helped but it's a bit late now also would a physical release cost a lot!

it was such a good game. although they funded it, shame it was locked behind epic for the most part. i'm sure things will pick up when it eventually releases on steam. i'm betting somewhere around the anniversary of its release this year.
iirc, the Epic store exclusivity stuff usually lasts between 6-12 months, so it'll probably drop on Steam in October of this year, if I had to guess.

Alan Wake 2 came out in October 2023, several months after RE4 Remake came out in March. I know Dead Space Remake suffered in terms of sales releasing 2 months before RE4 and people were more interested in the latter.
Epic funded the game so the company had no choice but to lock it on epic games store. For physical copies they should have went the extra mile and made them
I even remember THQ Nordic reaching out to them and offering to help with the physical PC version like they did for the original. I'm really hoping we get a Baldur's Gate 3 situation and a physical release comes later down the line.

its a very niche sequel to a niche over 10 year old xbox 360/ ps3 title. its further hindered by the choice to be digital only which would reduce sales. not to mention the game is exclusive to the epic games store on pc which a lot of people despise. the game had massive price cuts literally on launch i picked it up on epic for less than £30 with the winter sale voucher. honestly the game probably would've never been made if it wasn't published by epic games so i'd rather have the sequel with lower sales than no sequel at all. then again that does hinder the viability of a third game. Its a shame remedy games havent managed to break into the larger demographic as they make some truly amazing experiences.
I'm definitely buying the DLC and I agree AW2 being the fas selling remedy game is actually scary if you think about it especially with the like of max Payne 1 and 2 control hopefully epic and remedy market and push the dlc of aw2 with base game
It's super-disappointing that Remedy isn't a bigger name at this point. I think they definitely deserve to be selling millions of copies of their games, and hope that starts happening for them soon.
There are many things to blame! Lack of physical, epic, SBI, nvidia, illogical system requirements since its not really a next gen game and the list goes on!
in trouble? how can a game thats already came out be in trouble. if anything, future sequels could be in trouble. (oh no!!! my digital copy that I already bought is gonna dissappear!!!)
The digital release comments weren't BS. Remedy is an honest company and if they said this then it was probably the considerations made during development. I went all digital a long time ago and if you're smart you'll back it all up in an offline console/pc harddrive. I havce an old xbox with all games and even gamepass games and they all work offline.

Yes, using Epic as a producer, not having it physical, and not putting it on steam, hurt AW2 so much. Which is a damn shame, cause the game is fantastic and it is a worthy sequel to the first game.
Even though all these things make it seem obvious that it would have hindered the sales and the reviews, I would still bet my bottom dollar that if COD, NBA, Madden, FIFA, Battlefield, or any other one of these soulless franchises pulled these things, they’d still rake in a crap ton of profit, especially through microtransactions. Simply because that’s the shallow dopamine pit that everyone throws money in.
Half of the fault is Epic’s decisions, while the other half falls on people not giving it a chance just cause it’s an Epic exclusive.
Remedy has always been known to be passionate of their projects, using almost any money including pocket change to keep their games going and to keep their employees paid. They narrowly escaped bankruptcy before, so I doubt they’re super stressed from the low sales at this time. If things get bad, (like you said) they’ll probably use steam and / or physical sales as a last resort to gain profit, probably when the dlc’s release.
I'm hoping the eventual steam release gives it the numbers it deserves and things start going better for Remedy at this point. They deserve it.
I enjoyed Alan Wake 2, I just wish they'd put it on steam. It also had graphic issues with older graphic cards.

Cuz you need to really play all the other games and dlc for it to be really that good. Idk why u can get it on sale for only like 33 for both Alan wake remastered and control with the dlc.

It's gameplay is essentially Resident Evil 2 remake combined with Alan Wake 1 yet some idiots keep calling it a walking simulator. Physical is not going to happen.
The reason behind the 50$ price tag is the lack of physical copies. I'm pretty confident physical copies will cease to exist after the next generations of consoles come out. You won't buy any games after that or what?
AAA games are getting bigger and bigger and discs can't hold more than 130 GB so they already make us download what didn't fit on the disc. Physical copies are alrady dead on PC. My last physical copy is Evil Within 2 from 2017.

Good. Alan Wake 2 is terrible. Some of the worst writing I've experienced. It's not shocking to learn that Sweet Baby inc was involved.

Alan Wake 2 is a beautiful game, but it doesn't matter as the characterization, dialogue, and story are so poorly written. It also doesn't help that it's a boring walking simulator. Early in the game rather than showing Saga Anderson is competent instead Alex Casey just tells us he's letting her lead because she's a better detective. Later, Saga comes to meet Rose this random waitress that knows her full name. Claims Saga's daughter died via drowning. Saga doesn't find any of this off-putting. Saga doesn't even try to interrogate Rose after their strange introduction. This is an example of how none of the characters act in a believable manner. Saga and Casey head to the morgue to examine Nightingale's body. Saga doesn't wear gloves for the autopsy. After bringing out the manuscript pages the Sheriff just disappears and Nightingale resurrects. Saga having to fight a zombie doesn't seem all that scared. It's a minor inconvenience. After shooting this zombie it just disappears. Alex and Saga upon approaching the morgue exit. The two other deputies ask what happened? Saga tells them Sheriff Breaker disappeared and Nightingale turned into some sort of monster and officers are down. These two deputies don't give two flying fucks about their dead coworkers. Saga acts like she deals with supernatural threats every other week. It's no big deal. Melanie Liburd is subpar. She was terribly miscast as a Saga Anderson. She has little presence and delivers her lines so robotically. Alan Wake in the 1st game acts in a believable manner throughout the game. He shows various emotions as he's trying to survive. He feels like a real person. In Alan Wake 2 Saga comes off as if she's strolling through a park. Fighting darkness zombies is no big deal.
So basically it's just beef with Saga and not really much of anything else?

Saga Anderson is a protagonist. Thus she's is a big portion of Alan Wake 2. Her portrayal, and dialogue are bad. It shouldn't be shocking it hampers how good the game can be. Besides, many of the other characters are just as stupid but they don't matter as much because they lack the screen time Saga has.
I don't disagree, but she's also not the entire character roster or the rest of the game's narrative. I think Alan and his stuff is phenomenal, Casey himself is great (RIP James McCaffrey, Door as an antagonist(?) is phenomenally written and performed, Zane's a treat of a character and the stuff surrounding him is super-interesting, just to name a few examples. You're never going to catch me saying Saga was a strong part of the game, but at the same time I felt everything else besides her in the game was incredible.
I could never call Alan Wake 2 badly-written or one of the worst-written games of all time because one cast member in a sea of really good characters isn't up to the same level of quality. I've seen way, *way* too many pieces of media with plots that can't go two seconds without introducing universe-breaking plot holes, contradicting pre-established information, or undercutting their own morals/messages to even consider Alan Wake 2 to be anywhere near that.
Alan Woke 2 failed for being too woke, in addition to the reasons you mentioned in your analysis. Maybe dont race swap a main character halfway thru the franchise and then make us play as her all because Sweet Baby Inc told you to, Alan playing second fiddle in his own game, very TLOU2 vibes. That being said ill probably pick it up at some point during a Steam sale down the line, but I think it'll have a tough time on Steam due to the Sweet Baby Inc detected steam group with has like 380,000 followers, this game will be listed on that group as soon as it is listed to steam.
What main character did they race swap halfway through the franchise? I know Saga was originally supposed to be a white chick in development and they changed her to be black partway through, but who was the pre-existing character they switched up?

I just perceive it to be too woke for my taste personally, but it's a moot point because I have no interest in purchasing it it's current incarnation despite having a ps5 and pc that can run it. I dont want to own games on the Epic game store, I view it as inferior to Steam. Ps5 there is no physical, in the case of Stellar Blade it's slightly better on physical than digital (imo) because of the mild censorship, not that that was a dealbreaker on the game, but I have the benefit of being able to play the uncensored version because of the physical edition offline pre-day1 patch. If anything was woke in the game I'll refer to that weird dance number, like I didnt see that at the game awards and necessarily think "oh cool!" mostly thought "pcringe".
The censorship patch in Stellar Blade is such a weird concept to me. They changed maybe two or three outfits and removed her getting covered in gore, but there's still boatloads of outfits that show so much skin and you're still gutting giant monsters and spraying blood everywhere. It's like throwing a cup of water onto a burning building. What's even the point?

I don’t want to pretend to be offended for everybody else about the Korean dev who didn’t catch the relevance of connecting the two unrelated graphics. I don’t think i should have to play the censored version because everybody else’s weak sensibilities, therefore I won’t.
I don't really pay any mind to that sort of thing, honestly. I can think of plenty of things I play or watch that I disagree with politically and still enjoy, and I'd be gutted to find out I missed out on playing/watching/reading what could become my favourite game/movie/book/media because of that.

Even if you didn't like the game, you've still gotta support games like this that are willing to take risks like this,bad or good (that dosent mean you HAVE to pay for them obviously but at least respect its point). Otherwise we will just get the same type of games out there because companies don't want to risk money. Plus...footloose is a dance film, not sure it fits the point.
