  • Capcom has shocked the entire world (meaning me) by shadow-dropping a brand new PC port of the original Resident Evil game, as well as showing off that the entire trilogy is making its way to PC in the near future.

    Just grabbed them! I'd love to see CODE Veronica and Umbrella and Darkside Chronicles come to PC too.

    This port is based on the Windows 95 version of the game, not PS1. In this version on Jill's first playthrough she doesn't need ink ribbons but on subsequent playthroughs she does.

      Oh no, I meant the whole 'Jill doesn't need ink ribbons for her first playthrough but does on subsequent ones.' thing. Them re-working an existing PC port is completely understandable. My bad, I should've specified.

      I get the consoles, but why steam? GOG are the ones doing the legwork to preserve old games, and DRM free at that, they deserve the support.

      @@Shweelan It does kind of feel like a kickstarter kind of thing, like they got a sweet deal with gog and if sales are good they'l take the hit with the steam fees and release it on steam etc, or maybe they just wanted to avoid all that and just give people a option to buy a copy, either way credit where credits due the fact that they put a bit of work into them speaks wonders, specially compared to some others

    These are the super old PC ports actually. I used to have a copy of the RE2 port way back in the 00s. It was very good back then, I'm sure it's nice now tho GMan has noticed some stuttering.

    But the ink ribbons are a part of the game mechanics. It’s part of the difficulty level.
    Turning those off should surely be an option, because otherwise you’re altering the original vision and balancing of the game.

      That's really weird. The page on GoG says the Dualshock 4 is one of the supported gamepads for the game. Try browsing some of the GoG forums about the game to see if anyone else has had the same issue and found a fix.

    cant you do these things with mods on pc? they need to do a console port…

  • @wrathoftheflyingspaghettim850

    I don't really see the big deal honestly. It's been incredibly easy to one way or another get these games on PC it would be way bigger news if they were console releases where other than re1 randomly being on PS5 through ps plus these games are nowhere to be found in any way.

  • @Chaso-1124
    @Chaso-1124 Před měsícem +1

    Capcom is not even the ones doing this. This is GOG doing the leg work to keep these games up and running. Similar to alpha protocol that they just recently brought back after it was delisted from all the other stores. Capcom gets no credit for this from me. They still couldnt care less about their original games. The modders behind the seamless HD project have done immensely more work to update the original trilogy. They have made the games look and play better than ever, even better than this GOG version. Definitely worth checking out the seamless HD versions if you play on PC

    • @Shweelan
      @Shweelan  Před měsícem +2

      Whether or not they're the ones doing it, they're still the ones that signed off on the project to allow it to happen in the first place. A company commissioning a third party to remaster or port one of their existing games to another system is nothing new and neither is it an uncommon practice. I'm just grateful that we've got the original 3 RE games on a modern platform and hope they get ported to the modern consoles so everyone can experience them without having to track down abandonware PC ports from 1997 and hammer them into being playable on modern hardware with mods.

      @Chaso-1124 Před měsícem

      @Shweelan
      This would have been interesting if it released on all systems and had a physical release, or if it actually did a notable job of updating the games. Currently, this is honestly not much to get excited about. There are other, better and free, versions of the original games on PC that make this rather negligible

    • @Shweelan
      @Shweelan  Před měsícem

      Definitely, but the gullible, optimistic fool that I am likes to see this as the babysteps towards proper releases later down the line. You start with a simple port to PC with GoG, it sells well, then you step out into other markets if people are demanding it enough to incentivise. Alan Wake 2 did the same thing where it started out as a digital-only release and, even without making a dollar of profit on its original release, was given a full physical release because people kept asking for it.
      I feel like turning my nose up and ignoring these releases just incentivises the company to stop doing them altogether because people don't support it, so their older games that are unavailable anywhere legally stay unavailable because the company sees it as a wasted effort.

    • @Chaso-1124
      @Chaso-1124 Před měsícem

      @Shweelan
      Realistically, Capcom and everyone knows that these games would be successful if given proper releases. The remaster of re1 remake back in 2015 sold well past their expectations and even broke a record for the fastest selling digital only title on Playstation store. The fanbase is there, the demand is there, the money is there...but for whatever reason all capcom seem to focus on are their complete re-imaginings, rather than remasters or updates/ports of their older games to new systems for modern players to enjoy the classics.
      In my view, I honestly think they're ashamed of many of their older titles and desperate to overwrite them with these remakes/reimaginings. They seem to want to change a lot of things rather than honor them faithfully

    • @Shweelan
      @Shweelan  Před měsícem

      I'm not sure what the office politics at Capcom are, personally. There's not a lot of consistency in how they treat their franchises, especially nowadays. The last few days have seen ports of the PS1 RE trilogy, the MvC collection's announcement, and a visually-overhauled remaster of Dead Rising 1. But then we've previously seen them rereleasing or HD-ifying previous remakes and remasters of games without many changes made to them like RE1R and RE0 HD, releasing entire from-the-ground-up remakes of games that are complete reimaginings, releasing a remaster of Onimusha Warlords where they're overhauling the controls, mechanics, soundtrack, and even rerecording Samanosuke's dialogue 20 years later but keeping most everything else the same, and leaving games like Dino Crisis out to dry completely without any hint of a rerelease, revival, or remake.
      If Capcom consistently treated their old games and IPs one way, it'd be pretty easy to point the finger and say how they feel about them, but they've spent the last 20 years being incredibly unpredictable with who gets what given to it and when it happens that I feel like trying to say how they truly feel is like throwing darts at a spinning board while blindfolded.

    • @Shweelan
      @Shweelan  Před měsícem +3

      The ink ribbon thing is apparently a weird quirk of the original 97 PC port, where Jill doesn't need to use them for her first playthrough and then every subsequent one requires ink ribbons. As for the door animations, they're not removed. They're skippable. If you want to sit through them every time you go through a door or up the stairs, they're still there to do so, and if you don't, you can skip them with a press of a button.
