Panasonic HC-VX980: The annoying bits you should know about.

- čas přidán 14. 12. 2016
- Quick rundown of the most annoying bugs I've found in the Panasonic HC-VX980, during the two or so months that I've been using it. Most of these issues are likely to be present in the other camcorders of the series as well, for instance the HC-VX980M, VX989, VXF990 and WXF990.

My HDC -TM90 has many of the same idiosyncrasies but, so what? It takes absolutely stunning HD video. Anything you buy, no matter what, will have its little quirks and oddities. For me, the only thing that matters is the end result.
I've since found that just buying a DSLR is a far better option than a mid-range camcorder, for most applications.
If you're doing tripod shooting, maybe, but the form factor is unsuited for "run and gun", which is what I do a lot. My Panasonic fits my hand. I can wrap my fingers around it. Close the viewer and drop it in my pocket. Can't do that with a yuge DSLR. The thing weighs a ton.
Also, DSLR's have that shallow depth of field thing going on. If you want lots of bokeh, or bokashi, the DSLR is the way to go.
At the end of the day, all I want to do is get the video into post. From there, I can do whatever I want to with it. That's what separates the men from the boys.
Sure, I agree. That's largely how I use my gear these days, I keep a DSLR planted and a camcorder in P-auto, hand held. The DSLR is just so much quicker to set up if you're running anything at all manually, that it pays off very quickly in frustration points. The HC-VX980 in particular is downright cumbersome to adjust on-the-fly, whereas you can run a (decent) DSLR in manual everything, hand-held, and adjust on-the-fly with a physical button for everything.
great video thanks for poiting out thees flaws i have been meaning to buy thins camera
***** i know he saved my ass !
Informative thanks.
The manual does say that you have to set the Iris before setting the Shutter.
(On the VX990 you can turn off the beep sound)
RE THE BATTERY: Panasonic, Sony and other camera makers put some sort of chip or whatever in the camera to prevent generic batteries being used.
You should set your shutter speed prior to using your iris. If you are shooting at 24fps, you would use 1/50 for shutter. If you shoot 30fps, you should use 1/60 for shutter. Whatever frame fare you use, you double for your shutter speed.
Would you be so kind to let me know if it is possible to change frame rate to 24 fps on the Panasonic HC-VX980? Thank you!
@@grantdupill1934it is not possible. That camera only shoots in 30 fps and 60 fps
You can disable the sound when you touch the screen. Go to main settings, it is at the end.
Yes, but that disables all the sounds, including the start/stop recording sound.
yeah, you're right :\
how do I upgrade the firmware.... i have 5 cameras all the some but some are older...thanks for the headphone information
how to factory setting or Control the manual Panasonic Camcorder 4k HC-VX980 from My PC.
cannot control the manuals or anything from the touch screen.
Thanks
its a very useful camera for the money. All cameras have flaws even top range cameras.
is there a way to disable the beep sound during recording
Is there any better camcorder for around this price range?
Yes. On point. These are what I have found with mine.
What a bloody moaner !! .....Try plugging the Charging Lead into a Power Bank and you'll never need a spare battery. and that's just one of your "bugs" resolved .....I've owned one of these for a couple of years now and love it......My advise would be to learn the workarounds before bleating on!!
I'd rather not have to work around bugs on such an expensive device.
What's annoying to me is you have comment on features not working but lateron pass by as you scroll the menu. For example the microphone level CAN be set via the MENU since the HD camera's like the V-700 that I gladly use for over 5 years now.
Most annoying to you seems you are not able to do stuff inuitively as like you would on camera's (or camera types) that you already know better.
Furhermore you have some useful tips. I've got one too, most camera's like this have the issue when having (extreme) stabilisation, When panning or tilting with a tripod the advise is not to use stabilisation. As for making a quick pan, you get a warning that the camera is moving too fast.Looks if the processor can't cope and is lagging behind.
So knowing yout camera a bit better lets you get more of it and accept dat some annoyancies are not so worse afterall.
Cheep knockoff batteries have caused issues before, not only with Panasonic. Here in the Netherlands they sell Jupio as working cheaper replacement, but they're not so dirt cheap as one would like..
Regarding the microphone issue, my complaint is that the live adjustment/meter functionality is triggered only by connecting headphones. You cannot enable it permanently, which is retarded.
That's a fair conclusion. I agree.
@@FFcossag does anyone know if this is the same for all panasonic camcorders? or if the annoying things pointed out in the video are across the board for panasonic camcorders?
Than for sharing, very useful information.
I'm thinking about buying this one, good to know about the quirks, hopefully a software update resolves them.
Very good and useful video!!Many thanks!
I have the 990 and I find using the touch screen extremely annoying. And I wonder why my footage is not sharp after I transfer it to my pc..
Does this shot in a log format, like v-log?
This annoying message about the microfon ist present since the beginnings of their HD line-up(maybe it was already in some older SD models). It really makes me angry and was one of the reasons why I already send back the SD-707(which hadn´t that much wideangle...with 35mm), the other ones being the annoying fan and the untrue colour rendition(blue skys often occured greenish) and these issues weren´t adressed in later models. The menu system hasn´t changed either over the years - might be a good thing if you got used to it, but on the other hand the touch interface was always somehow lackluster. And a 460.000 screen in 2016? Come on! This was already meh in 2011. We´re talking about 4K now be shown on a screen with around 1/18 of the actual resolution...
Let´s face it, the camcorder section is a thing of the past, mainly to it´s own fault. In some aspects not good because the handling is still better than with most photo cameras with good video mode, but these are mostly far better now. I know why I mostly used Panasonic m4/3 cameras in the last years - they have a way better interface and there is no annoying warning about the microphone likely coming into wide-angle, just a non-obstrusive message about to switch the microphone on which doesn´t hinder recording after startup. Oh and BTW I think Panasonic has reduced the amount of features deliberately to make you spend 200 bucks more on the otherwise same VXF999 which has a better positioned mic input and a viewfinder.
Hi FF, long time no see! Also, happy new year! Nice to see that your channel has grown and you were finally able to get a new camera. And yes, I also did some research on newer Panasonic cameras (when I was planning to get a new one, but never did) and found out that the audio is really bad in the newer ones which is kinda odd since HC-V250 and older models had better audio.
I also happened to run into some Pasi Viheraho's videos (from all the people, heh, you probably know the guy already) and he got a new Panasonic HC-W580, but returned it once he found out the audio was worse than his older HC-V210 (and then got some new 4K camera, but it was a different brand). Here are his test videos:

Anyway, thanks for showing all the annoying bits. Kinda disappointed that the camera turned out to be so consumer level product even though it's pretty expensive.
Merry 2017. Technically, YT hasn't paid for this camera yet, lol, it's a pure loss for another year. This one doesn't have very impressive audio on the internal mics either, with some kind of weird high-pass filter permanently enabled. The ext. mic preamp is of really good quality though, as long as you're fine with the fact that an external mic will partially obstruct image in wide zoom position.
See you in SL.
I bought this camera and found another very bad problem: Autofocus tracking is not available in manual mode! By the way you can turn off beep-sound via menu.
I have had this camera now for about 2-3 years... and NOW the touch screen is no longer functional. The touch screen works, but I cant change ANY settings on the screen as touch screen does NOT function (does not pick up a finger touch) ... I am googling to see if there is any way of fixing this, as I love this camera. Still records and everything but NOW its stuck on MANUAL and I can't do a damn thing with it as the touch screen is stuffed. Has anyone else had this problem???... I am going to have to contact Panasonic to see how much it will cost to repair.... or I will have to sell it. So frustrating, as most of my electronics always last until I no longer want or need them, but this camera (oh and my AirPods!!!!!) is stuffed and I've treated it with care.
990 sorts mic in placement and some other issues...
Great review.
The sound can be disabled on the 770 i also use a preamp getting good results. The 980 has some good features esp the slow motion and the time lapse.
Disabling the sound also disables the rec stop/start sound. The 980 does not have timelapse, only stop-motion.
Hwo about the vx981 one?
Did you have ever tested it?
hi there, do you know what's the difference between the hc vx 870 and the hc vx 980?
Is this camcorder fully manual (exposure, focus, iris, shutter speed, ISO/gain)? Some cameras offer only iris/shutter priority modes and still call themselves "manual".
It can be run fully manual, but you don't want to because the UI is so bad. It's next to impossible to set it up.
On the VXF990 the mic port is next to the handstrap.
The strange thing is Panasonic implement video on their stills cameras brilliantly, with every conceivable option, but on their video cameras it's all a bit old school.
Hi, i'm french, so i did not understood everything... I've got a specific question, is it still possible to use a mic with this cam, there is a message, but does it works ?
It works.
Bad to see, that they didn´t fix many of the issues with the new generation.
Still the same (consumer grade) controls and issues like on the V770 I had a while ago ...
Thx for the video btw. - Still: Albeit all cons one of the best 4K options actually around 600 to 700 bucks.
(The Sony AX33 is a mess according purple fringing and the mic input, the AX53 is better - But still no full manual control possible.
The AX100 is COMPLETELY oversharpened and so quite unusable overall and well - That´s it more or less in the lower 4K range ...)
is there some kind of custom software for this cam like canon has magic lantern?
NOPE LOL
Hi, what external mic do you use? mu Rode mic does not work!
A BM-800.
about the battery, mabe it's like Sony accu's they have a chip inside which send information about the battery status to the camera.
It's just a guess.
Yes, and there is one in that battery as well (I did a teardown on it - czcams.com/video/CzZOiW7hBSk/video.html ). This chip clearly works on other/older models, but not this one.
The only thing I can think of is that they have build some kind of detection in the firmware to reject non genuine batteries.
Should have bought the ux180 instead. A fantastic camera.
Weird about the battery. Have this exact model and using cheap chinese battery from amazon. also battery from old Panasonic SD90 works in it too.
thats horrendous...
All products have issues.
These are all points that would annoy me so much that I wouldn't buy the camera. Especially the rejection of -inexpensive- reasonably priced batteries because of the manufacturer's greed is totally inacceptable.
***** If that modification were possible, this would be a great solution. I'm afraid it isn't, because the rip-the-customer-off chip may be the same chip that controls the charge of your battery.
Also you can't turn off the auto level, the camera auto tilts the video even with image stabilization off
Wow, you're right! I had to test that to be sure, but it definitely does auto level with the IS off.
FFcossag I regret buying the VX870
If the VX870 was similar in price/performance to the 980, then I think you'd have a hard time finding a better option without significantly increasing your budget.
FFcossag it was between the panasonic 870 or the Sony AX33 which doesn't support manual controls but has better optics
FFcossag going off the specs both our cameras are actually the same
I assume the VX920 and even V770 has the same problems with the screen...
I'd imagine they do. Having had a chance to test shooting with a DSLR for a while, the UI on these cameras is just beyond poor.
Sony seems a lot better. I don't usually mess with them but Panasonic is shit at their menus...
people whinging about a 'mic' message when plugged in, get over it..... and how OIS isn't good on a tripod or solid surface. you idiots should know you are meant to disengage OIS when tripod mounted for that very reason.... you want pro camera features in a consumer camera. you get what you pay for..... and when all is said and done, this camera performs ok and footage is very useable. that's what really matters.
The VX870 ans 890 have the same annoying issues
Gees it's a budget camera wait til yu've spent 20 grand on one that has annoying bits
I would not accept annoying bits in a 20k camera.
I have the model before this one, it has baad chromatic aberration
This camera is for the mums and dads it easy to use takes great image quality. The file on PC is a interesting one.. once you have it sorted... great camera for what it was built for
so i guess over all u are happy with it and the pros outway the cons
It's not a bad camera.
Panasonic is my go too brand if I don't know any better. All the others like Canon, Sony, etc are probably much worse.
get a remote...
What a piece of.... mistake!
Firmware wise it sounds like panasonic is a pile of poo, hardware sounds ok though.
The battery, hmm sounds like they are pulling a dell trick of "Special i.d" bullshit!!.
I personally think that jabbing a screen is a stupid method of changing settings, why could they not give real buttons for that, i just dont know :-(
Yep thats the way i feel, for mobile phones it seems to work, although i still use an ancient mobile (sonyericson k800i) because i dont need anything more than a basic phone.
Screen jabbing for video cameras just seems pointless when buttons are possible.
You can get plenty of buttons on the expensive models. This one does have several buttons though, it's just a shame that they're labelled "WiFi", "HDR", "Still/Video" and "Power".
Writing on the screen... what the hell? That's so stupid.
