- Reel Film takes an in-depth look at the Panasonic HC VXF990. Video was produced during 2023 and finalised on the 14th October 2023.
This capable Hybrid Video Camera was launched to market circa. 2015 and went on to win a TIPA award in 2016.
Considering its age, it has excellent video quality which captures brilliant tonal qualities.
I would have liked a proper focus ring as well as some jargon free menus.
However, I think this is an excellent video camera for the £385 that I paid for it in early 2023.

I have also included some useful links if you would like to delve deeper.

Nice little unit. I remember seeing these in a shop I worked in at that time. Yes 2016 was the start of a lot of 4K equipment. My Sony AX53 came out at same time as this and still sold as I got one last year. Camcorders that sale well stay about years unlike most electronics that get updated mostly yearly now.
Hello Sir. That’s really interesting. I really enjoyed learning about the camera whilst working on the review. I was tempted to get a 4K Sony but ended up getting the one I could afford at the time
Thank you for making all the effort involved in reviewing and explaining this camera's features, it's the only decent youtube video for this camera. I'm in St Osyth not far away. I've loved my pair of SD 900's Full HD with lens ring. Also have SD600 same technology but just a basic srpped down version. They are 3 chip cameras with Leica lens, keen to see how they compare VFX990 in 4k. I shoot lost of installation and testimonial videos. And needed 4k to be able to crop in on footage. Got the DJI pocket 2, but it is so much easier to use the panasonic camcorders when filming. Thanks Again Tony G
Hello, thanks for arching and commenting.
You are welcome. Yes, It took me quite a while to finally complete this video, but I wanted it to try and include all of the features which people might use.
I enjoy it really.
The osmo pockets are great. I have the first one and use it mostly for timelapse.
Take care
Hi Adrian
I’ve got this one, we bought it at work and I’ve hardly used it!
This has encouraged me to get it out and use it more
Hello mate.
What was it bought for? General projects?
I actually learned more about the camera whilst making this video. 😊
I have the Panasonic hdc-tm900! ( 2014) Panasonic made some great cameras back in the day! I think the camcorder form is still usable, I added a pistol grip to mine and feels amazing to keep stable and the gyro stabe is great too. Mine only shoots 1080p 60f. But very usable today! Don't have the 3D lens, but I do have a wide angle lens. I put on a dead cat on the surround mic, really cuts down on wind noise if not using an external mic! Great review!
Hello 😃,
Thanks for your comments.
I just had to look up that camcorder.
www.trustedreviews.com/reviews/panasonic-hdc-tm900
That's so cool that it had a 3d attachment. That would have been fun to have played around with.
Oh yes, 1080 / 60 is perfectly usable.
Like I mentioned in my review, I recently sold my Canon, which was HD. Amazing little camera with superb video quality. It lacked a Mic input however.
Take care
Still like mine 😁👍
(The wheel is designed to be used by your thumb as your hand supports the front)
I still like mine as well, still dislike the wheel 🤣
Solid little camera though. Excellent bang for your buck
Pre-record is a great option. if you were filming say the RAC rally, waiting for a car to come in to shot you can never press the record quick enough to capture the car first appearing. You can with pre-record. P.S just bought this camera, not arrived yet.
Thanks for watching and commenting and thank you for the suggestion. That makes sense.
I tend to find that these recording options are always helpful for certain people doing specific things. It’s nice to learn how they might use them.
Top video ! Merci bien.

I used to have an X920 which was a great unit and had a focus ring, not sure why this was dropped as they seem on an equal level spec wise
Oh really. Yeah, I’d love a focus ring on my model.
I wish the manufacturer would archive all of the info about their cameras so it is easier to research.
Sony is the best at doing this, but it’s never in year order or date of release.
Wow, great test! Thank you. I am planning to get one of these soon, how good is the 1080p? Due to space concerns I prefer 1080p and UHD only in lowlight.
Hello, glad you found the video informative. It was a lot of work. From my own experience, the 1080p is just fine.
@@ReelFilm2016thanks for the quick reply!
@@TheReelport No problem
Do you still have the camera? I read a review saying 1080p is slightly cropped, is it true?
Ok, I just checked them specs it becomes 37mm in FHD, instead of 30mm in 4k
Answered most of my questions with this review, however I do have one question. Does it have focus tracking, I'm hoping to record steam engines coming directly towards me, starting at 25x zoom pulling back to 0x zoom, all the while in focus. TIA.
Hello, thanks for watching and commenting. I will look into this at the next available opportunity and get back to you as soon as possible.
Hello again, so I have managed to have a look and I can't find something specific related to focus tracking but you can have face framing. This should help you to track a face in the frame.
I don't tend to use this feature in general, so I am not particularly qualified to answer the question.
I would suggest having a look at the manual, (Link included below) and looking at page 70 and 93. Dolly zoom mode might be useful for you.
Camcorder manufacturers don't alway's explain some of the functionality very well.
If you can track a face, you might be able to track a part of the steam engine. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Great video well done but I have a question, I own this camera & have been using the slow-motion. It works in slow-mo when viewed in camera but when I move the file to PC & playback its in 50fps & says that in the properties of the file, surely it should be 720fps. tia
I haven’t used that function yet! Is it good?
Why do you think that it should be 720fps, I’m just curious.
Most slow motion is okay at that frame rate, but I have a dji action 2 and that offers up up to 120fps in 4K and 240fps in 1080.
I don’t know of any camera that offers 720fps. Let me know
@@ReelFilm2016 I got it wrong I meant to say 240fps, 120fps, but I have now re-read the bit about slo-mo in the manual. When you shoot in the slo-mo mode & have made a file you have to go into the editing mode in the camera & convert the file to slo-mo. When played back in the PC it plays in slo-mo but in the file properties it is still 50fps.... It took me ages to figure out & could not find an explanation on google or youtube about this & the manual is pretty confusing.
@@ReelFilm2016 I do prefer the GoPro which shoots 240fps & that can be controlled better in the editor, I do love the Panasonic though, still the best camera I have comes on all my shoots
Certain manufacturers do like to make the users work hard. Well done for figuring that out, I shall make a note myself. How is the slow-mo?@@bacupman37
Yes, the Panasonic Picture Quality is fantastic. @@bacupman37
does it have in-built ND filters?
Hello, thanks for watching and commenting.
No, unfortunately not. 😞
Hi Again just working my way round my ebay purchased WXF990 Do you know if you can output to field monitor when recording 4K? Thanks again ony G

@@ReelFilm2016 Hi again changed my hdmi lead to ugreen now I can monitor to set shot up. However as soon as I hit record image on monitor disappears? Thanks Tony
@@tonyglasstv2685 oh really. That’s odd!
What’s ugreen? Or is that a typo/auto correct error?
@@ReelFilm2016 Hi Again UGREEN is a brand of high quality cables. For me it is the only one so far that gives a consistent HDMI signal from VXF990. It works fine when monitoring until you press record then external monitor goes blank. I guess this a limitation on a camera of this age. Having said that I still use a Panasonic SD900 and SD600. Both from circa 2011 and arguably as good an image as they are 3 chip cameras, with higher quality build. The difference is in post where 4k helps with the extra pixels for cropping in. I plan to do a side by side of 990 v SD900 at 1080, want to get involved?.
@@tonyglasstv2685 Oh right, okay. I have never heard of those cables, but now I have.
You should definitely make a video comparison. That would be great to see.
Not sure I can contribute anymore than I have, but let me know what you are thinking. 😀
thanks for the video. I might have missed it if you said it, but, can the HC-VXF990 do live streaming?
Hello, thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, I believe you can. I didn’t cover it in my video as it isn’t something I am experienced in.
Here is the manual for the camera. See pages 182 onward. Hope this answers your question. If not, let me know.
eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/hdw/oi/WXF990/HC-VXF990_VX980_EP_EB_SQW0536_eng.pdf
Whats todays equivalent?
Probably the VXF1 / VX1
@ReelFilm2016 does the smaller sensor on the VFX1 make much of a difference??
@@MrDogtown22 I am not entirely sure. Maybe google the manual and have a look. Or see if there are any reviews online, that might help. I wouldn’t have thought the quality would be worse.
@ReelFilm2016 ahh I've just noticed NONE of the Panasonics shoot at 4k 30 so no good for me anyways. 24fps looks horrendous when viewed on an OLED.
@@MrDogtown22 I know. Bit of a strange one that is. I’d have preferred 30 fps
