  • Unboxing the Panasonic HC-VC980 camcorder and doing a small comparative test against the tired old Canon Legria HF R46 that it's replacing.
    In short, it's better. And it has a metal tripod mount. The worst part I've found out about it within the day I've owned it, is that EVERY SINGLE TIME you connect a microphone, it presents you with a screen-covering black box warning you that your microphone might show up in frame if it's too long. Hey, Panasonic? THAT'S FUCKING OBVIOUS. STOP MAKING ME PRESS "OK" TO USE MY MIC THAT'S NOT EVEN MOUNTED TO THE GOD DAMN CAMERA!
    A HUGE thanks goes out to everyone who's watched me for the last couple of years, and ESPECIALLY to those who've so generously donated to the channel through Patreon and Paypal. YOU guys made this possible, and I hope to make it up to you.

    Is there firmware available for this camera above 1.0? So far I have not found one, although there are updates available for many other cameras. Thanks for the reply!

    I would recommend 1080p 60 going forward, sure 4k or 1440p would be nice but the frame-rate would make it look better.

    • @FFcossag
      @FFcossag  Před 7 lety +2

      I agree (although we're talking 1080p50). 4K source files are just giant behemoths that are really cumbersome to handle. Well over twice as big per unit time, and several times slower to render - and my current 1080p50 template already takes about 3 hours per 10 minutes to render. At 4K, we'd realistically be talking about render times in excess of 24 hours per video.

      @andljoy Před 7 lety

      Go on live a little go for that extra 10 fps :P.
      But yes , resolution is not everything, many people forget that.
      Does it do 4.4.4 chroma ?

    • @FFcossag
      @FFcossag  Před 7 lety +1

      Andrew Joy I can't live a little - it's a PAL camera. It doesn't do your Murrkan 30/60FPS thing.
      As for 4.4.4 chroma, I honestly don't know. I'm a novice when it comes to video formats and things of that nature.

      FFcossag I am from the UK , there was 60fps pal for a short time , nothing supported it but it was awesome ! takes the only thing good about NTSC and butchers the pal standard :)

      @jasejj Před 7 lety +1

      60fps might be a bad idea given the 50Hz of almost everything else in the room anyway.

    Oh wow even the mic made it alot easyer for me to hear what your saying :)

    • @FFcossag

      The ability to use an external microphone is the biggest upgrade by far. It enables me to actually position the camera some distance behind me while keeping the microphone in front of me. A future upgrade is definitely going to be some kind of clip-on/headset type microphone (think Louis Rossman style).

    I wonder why video cameras remain so expensive compared to point and shoot cameras ( some of them being able to shoot decen videos...)

    • @FFcossag
      @FFcossag  Před 7 lety +2

      It's a smaller market, their optics generally have a much wider range, they have FAR quieter, faster and more accurate mechanics, and there's some kind of royalty on cameras able to film for more than 30 minutes, due to copyright trolls.

  • @MarcelOoms
    @MarcelOoms Před 7 lety +1

    Nice camera! Maybe you can try at least filming in 4K. I find the end-result much better when filming and editing in 4K and doing the final render in 1080p. Indeed, editing 4K is sometimes slow. But somehow the extra detail when filming in 4K results in a much nicer 1080p picture. It's a strange, maybe counterintuitive, but well known fenomenom. Sharper, more detail. Shooting 4K and editing in 1080 gives better results as well, though.
    Maybe you can give it a try and compare the results? Would be a shame not to use that beautiful sensor to its full capacity!

    • @FFcossag
      @FFcossag  Před 7 lety

      Higher source res of course gives better picture; you get a higher bit rate. The sacrifice is frame rate since it only does 4K at 24/25 FPS, and storage space/SD card wear. I'll probably try shooting in 4K at some stage, though. At the moment though, I'm just going to stick to 1080P50 while I'm learning how to use the camera.

    Oh wow thats a smashing camera :-D.
    You're so happy to have a nice camera, i could not stop smiling, im a fool :-D.
    The picture is of cause much nicer, but the audio has bass or depth to it now, very nice :-D.
    Stop kissing that camera ha ha :-D

    • @FFcossag
      @FFcossag  Před 7 lety +2

      Let's not use the word "smashing" in the context of this expensive, new, fragile electromechanical device. ;)
      The audio improvements are by far the biggest change. Not only from a quality point of view, but twice as much from a comfort point of view. Having the mic strapped to your camera is NOT a good solution for a one-man operation.

    just a small improvement on this end but the content is still worth my time.

    • @FFcossag
      @FFcossag  Před 7 lety

      The demo I did at the end didn't really do justice to the difference between the two cameras, in part because I forgot to set the old one to 50p mode, so it was using 1/25 second exposures in the dark, while the new one was doing 1/50 second, lol.
      The biggest difference is going to be in the available camera angles and the audio quality. Since I'm no longer limited to the internal camera microphone, I can actually place the camera where I want it in the future - without sounding as if I'm speaking from two rooms over.

    • @FFcossag
      @FFcossag  Před 7 lety

      ***** I actually did that, and added my rear-facing mic. You can watch it here:
      czcams.com/video/NNt4kpLlVKQ/video.html
      The jist of it is that an external jack would be cumbersome to add since I'd also have to deal with switching the internal mic off, and mounting the relatively huge jack somewhere.

    wow........eyelids over the high end Leica lens......nice

    • @FFcossag
      @FFcossag  Před 7 lety +1

      I'm not sure how "high end" it is, really. While it does have a decently larger zoom range, distortion wise it's considerably worse than the kit lens on my ultra-cheap Canon 1000D DSLR.

    You should try and get one for UXWbill! Anyways, after searching up these things are damn expensive. Can't wait for the next videos to come

    • @dyter424
      @dyter424 Před 7 lety

      If I recall correct, uxwbill's ISP upload speed is complete garbage. It must take a long time to upload a 45-minute video even on 480p...

    • @CobsTech
      @CobsTech Před 7 lety

      Davide424 Yeah I remember a video where he talked about that. Its a shame because I think his video's would be so much better in 720 or even 1080p imo.

    • @CobsTech
      @CobsTech Před 7 lety

      FFcossag Yeah, I suppose it is in uxwbills style. Still watch all of his rambling videos. Will you upload in 1080p or move up to like 1440/4k?

    • @FFcossag
      @FFcossag  Před 7 lety

      daniel15092 Most future videos of mine will be 1080p50. 4K is not worth the bother, and the practical resolution of the sensor and optics doesn't quite justify it. Much like how my old camera would not justify 1080p.

    • @FFcossag
      @FFcossag  Před 7 lety +3

      Alas that is true, but new camera smell is one of the best smells in the world. Believe it or not, but I actually have a (bad) habit of sniffing my cameras every now and again while using them, just because it satisfies me.

  • @First2ner

    take it apart?
    new one that is.. much better video and audio

    • @FFcossag
      @FFcossag  Před 7 lety +2

      I'm not taking it apart until I need to. I've been inside enough camcorders to know that there's always a real risk of them not going back together again - and I'd rather shoot at least a couple of videos before that happens. ;)
