Dashcam Shows Shootout Between OHP Trooper and Pursuit Suspect

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol released dashcam video of a trooper-involved shooting that happened in Woodward in August. According to reports, Trooper Austin Ellis attempted to initiate a traffic stop for a seat belt violation. That's when the driver, Arturo Ramirez, failed to yield. And instead of pulling over, Ramirez pulled into the parking lot of a Days Inn Hotel on Highway 183, where he opened fire on the trooper. Trooper Ellis was hit in the chest, but his vest stopped the bullet. Ramirez was shot once in the hand. From there, he drove off with the trooper in pursuit. In an effort to get away, Ramirez later reportedly crawled through the open garage door of a residence along Western Avenue, before allegedly breaking into an outbuilding. "A perimeter was established with cooperation from local law enforcement. And a suspect was apprehended by the Oklahoma Highway patrol,” Colonel Mike Harrell, with OHP, said.
Ramirez was then taken into custody. And Trooper Ellis was taken by Air Evac to the OU Medical Center. “The bullet actually did not penetrate the body, but there was enough force inside the vest compartment that it caused that fractured rib,” Colonel Harrell said. Trooper Ellis suffered a fractured rib, and internal bleeding. He is out of the hospital now, but is still on leave. “I tell everybody almost every day, these guys are my heroes. They face an unknown danger every time they step outside that car,” Colonel Harrell said. Arturo Ramirez is facing several charges including shooting with intent to kill.

Wow. Got shot, broke a rib, internal bleeding and he still got into his car, whipped out his patrol rifle and followed the vehicle like nothing ever happened. Its amazing what adrenaline and great training can get you through. Much respect for this badass.

He rescued 5 ppl and got them to the Evac helicopter with his guts hanging out. He stayed with 2 other soliders and held down the Evac site so the Heli could take off. 1 of the 2 other soilders that were with him was miraculously a medic. He was somehow able to stay stable and got a medal of honour when he came home. Now he's got a beautiful daughter and goes around schools talking about his experiences in war. He's a Hispanic man. Saved all white lives. I'm white, and I have not 1 milimeter of racism in my blood. I love that man.

I like how he gathers himself and gets in the car. Gets on the radio and gives information in a even tone and gives pursuit. Grabbing his service weapon from the back and making an assessment of his physical condition all while pursuing a suspect that he had just been in a gunfight. This guy is a real hero and an excellent trooper. Best reason of all was.....he wore a vest that day and didn't underestimate his suspect.

Officer was lucky but broken ribs that cause internal bleeding take a long time to fully heal.

I love that even though the trooper was hit, had a fractured rib, and he was driving, he still had his rifle ready to shoot the POS. He is an All around badass, IMO.

Its incredible that in US the police can patrol alone without a partner. Here in germany I never see a smt like that I think it is not even allowed
The US is way larger than Germany so we can't afford to have that many cops. Even with 1 person in each car there are still miles and miles in between police officers at times.

Not that many cops get killed though. In the big cities were violent crimes are more common they do often travel in pairs but out in rural areas shootings hardly ever happen and when they do it's usually methheads shooting each other and not at cops.
The last time there was a murder in my town was in 2010 I think. A couple years ago a druggie shot another druggie out in the county though(way outside city limits). And less than 24 hours later some guys crazy GF stabbed him to death. That was in 2016 though and there have been no murders since.

What a bad ass trooper. No emotion, didn't shut down or freak out, literally got in his car and pursued the threat. I don't think most people realize just how much internal strength that would take after being just a couple inches away from losing your life.

Imagine getting hit in the chest by a hammer, thats basically what damage it does when you are shot wearing soft body armor with no plate. It stops the bullet from passing through, but you are still hit with the kinetic energy in a very small area and it still messes you up.

Did you see the suspect waiting for him to come up to the car so he could shoot him point blank but the Officer was smart enough not to go. But I tell Police all the time as soon as someone don't comply call for more units because something about to go down.

There should be death penalty for attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer. It is one of the ultimate crimes against society, and anyone who would do this will never be rehabilitated into society, and taxpayers don't want to support a criminal for life in prison. Give them a fair trial, and if there is no doubt of guilt, then execute them.

Before the execution the convict should have his hands chopped off for being in possession of a firearm. New rule, convict with a gun, off with the hands. If they don't like the new law, spend your full time incarcerated without parole.

Reason I’m going into police academy, I went through a lot of situations similar to this. I’ve seen so much & I feel if a cop in my child days, helped me make a difference I feel like I can do the same for another kid. By the way, I’m leave to the academy pretty soon, stay safe everyone, life is no joke.
Edit: my similar events I mean by I’ve see shootouts due to wrong timing like this happen before me, which made me want to better the place for people.

This officer showed professionalism on a grand scale. He was shot and didn't panic, he took caution driving, he didn't take crazy shots at the car which could have gone stray, he didn't take long distance shots at the second location which could have hit anything or anyone. He just showed perfection all the way through. What a great example of a police officer.

I laughed when the balcony video popped up. It’s like people are just standing around recording with their phones 24/7. And what was that Trooper thinking allowing that criminal to run towards that house? He should have fired immediately after exiting his vehicle. Once the suspect fires at you, there are NO more commands at that point, you have to kill him. This could have turned tragic for the potential family who might be at that home.
yes he potentially put himself at further risk, and the people in that house. The suspect already showed himself to be devious, there was no telling if he was still armed.
