G'day Geoff, I can't thank you, and Humbrol, enough for this build. I'm ex (70s) RAAF and now I'm an amateur WW2 aviation historian who stays broke trying to make WW2 documentaries. You're Hurricane build has taught me so much, not only about modelling and logical weathering but also more about the venerable Hurricane. Like all boys of my generation, and earlier, I was obsessed with R.J. Mitchell's beautiful Supermarine Spitfire. The Hurricane had a huge disservice done to it by being pushed to the background by me, and millions like me. I am totally ashamed that I've never done a Hurricane build; but thanks to you that is going to change, rapidly.
Unlike many modellers, I've had the privilege of working closely with military 'propeller' aircraft in regular service. Up close and personal; one sees faults, scratches, bits left off and hastily replaced, stains from heaven knows what etc., etc. The RAAF was the first foreign force to buy the magnificent C-130 A, then E models. So proud were we of these aircraft that they had been kept, as much as possible, in pristine condition even by the 70s when I first encountered them. When properly serviced and washed they looked much the same as they did when they arrived from the US almost 15 years earlier. Still, time and service in far flung environments take their toll. Each year it was harder for the flight line and servicing crews to keep these aircraft looking like new.
Research for one of our documentaries into Field Marshal (then General) Sir Thomas Blamey's personal aircraft during WW2, led me to actually contact his personal pilot. This kind gentleman sent me his original log books, to photograph, from WW2! I got to see where his, (Blamey's) C-60 Lodestar and, later, his Liberator flew and in what conditions. His valuable log books, plus photographs, had a huge effect on the models we made of these aircraft. (Blamey's Liberator, being a 'gift' from General MacArthur, had relatively low flying hours and a re-fit; influencing the finished model, once again.)
Like you, I can't over stress the importance of research for the serious historical modeller. Extremely few aircraft can be modelled from that period without showing the wear and tear of combat sorties in all weathers. Once, I did pay tribute to a distant relative by modelling his Spitfire which, my research revealed, was only weeks out of the factory before he was lost on his third sortie. This was the only, 'genuinely new' looking model I made since I was a boy.
As I said, I can't thank you enough, Geoff. You have taught this old dog many new tricks that I will apply and experiment with on all my future models. Because of my eyesight and slightly shaky hands, I'm tending to larger models; also because I can weather and age them in a style familiar to me because of my previous experiences. My final project is to make a model of every RAAF aircraft I flew on or worked around during my service. This goal will, now, produce better looking models... thanks to you. Cheers, BH

Very good series thanks. Just one question that I would like answering by anyone please,- Would that final application of pastels need "Fixing"? and with what? to make it more durable.

Hi Dave - so sorry for the delay in getting back to you! I hadn't realised the series had gone live! No, no need to fix the pastels, just take care in handling - they are pretty resistant :) GC
