I use warm slightly soapy water, soak for 20 seconds apply it and then use micro-solo. Works wonders for me and it does not take nearly 8-9 minutes to soak.

Great Philip - glad that works for you. Great stuff! I too use this approach quite often. What's suggested here is very much about what to do when using Humbrol/Airfix products. Best wishes, Geoff

Wow!! Great ideas for me as a beginner learning so much, patience and less is more techniques thank you Geoff and Humbrol, I’ve even purchased this kit to do after I’ve completed the starter kits Triumph Herald and the 1:72 Spitfire starter kit. Looking forward to it immensely.

The gloss coat, pre decal, was this also the humbrol spray can stuff?
Currently I’m using humbrol clear, but turns out that gets eaten by decal fix. 😰

Geoff, I feel constrained to query why it's recommended to soak decals in Decalfix. I ruined some Airfix 1/48 decals followng the earlier Airfix videos (the gent with the Birmingham/Midlands accent) suggesting just that. I had to have them replaced. Secondly, who wants to wait seven minutes or more for Decalfix to soak off any decals (even if it does) when ordinary warm, or even cool, water will do in in a. third of that time? Also, it seems a very expensive method too: how much Decalfix will users be getting through merely to soak of decals when warm water is (relatively) free?
Thirdly - and perhaps more importantly - even in acknowledging this was around 6-7 years ago, unless the formula has changed since, it was my experience that Decalfix stripped off Tamiya acrylics in seconds flat. Fortunately I practiced on a scrap piece first since - coincidentally - it was the first time I tried using new tools, materials and techniques, including airbrushing, after having come back into modelling after a long break, inspired I have to say by Airfix's 1/48 Sea Vixen.

If you have a look on the Airfix website about using decal fix the Birmingham gent also says that if you use the Acrylic Clear gloss varnish and apply the Decal fix , you must dilute the Decal fix with water because both Gloss clear varnish and Decal fix are Ammonia based _______ This meaning the decal fix will damage the gloss clear varnish surface .
O boy im not sure now ,, As a new modeller im a bit confused ,
cant just simply buy and use products,
also need to understand not all products are compatible with each other

Hi there - thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts on this. As I mentioned in reply to Philip's comments above, this project was all about getting the best out of Humbrol (and Airfix decal) products. I don't disagree with using warm water to soak your decals ready to applying them to your model - makes perfect sense and saves time. In my experience, I would rarely, if ever mix Humbrol products with any other type of paint/varnish. I take the view that Humbrol spent a long time producing their products and they are designed to work very well together and so it's safe to follow that principle.
      Best wishes, geoff C.

Sorry Geoff, call me cynical, even suspicious, but to me that's ducking and/or avoiding the issue. First, it doesn't explain why soaking Airfix decals - yes Airfix's own supplied decals - in Decalfix is simply a waste of Decalfix even if it worked, which it doesn't, but to suggest that Decalfix has been developed to suit Airfix/Humbrol products is something of a copout. It's called Decalfix and from that I infer it's suitable for all decals on all paints - just like other brands I have used thus far.
It strips Tamiya acrylics and it shouldn't, that's the issue. It's a known issue and one that modellers should be aware of. To that that end, since Humbrol know of the problem, there should be a warning that it works on Humbrol paints only. That being the case, in the meantime Humbrol are limiting themselves to a limited market.
It all goes to add to the somewhat justified criticisms that Humbrol has faced from the modelling community, something you address in another video (if not this one). Why limit a product to its own product? Just means that I will by Set and Sol instead.

Why do people keep pronouncing decal by saying deckol? It's pronounced deecal.

LOl, enough of this pronunciation , its like scone and scoan , im just trying to understand why you cant use decal fix and humbrol clear acrylic gloss varnish because the decal fix , ok deecal fix will damage the acrylic gloss varnish because both are Ammonia based products
Blimey how confusing is this , all Airfix products and not compatable to use with each other ??

In the 70's they were called Transfers in the British Isles, so that's what I'm sticking to.
