  • Box-And-One defense has been a major part of the winning formula for many NBA, EuroLeague and FIBA teams in recent years, but how you would react if someone used it against you for the whole game?
    Mike James called it ridiculous so in this video, BasketNews’ Augustas Suliauskas looks at the pros & cons of such defense and its most successful recent examples like Nick Nurse’s Toronto Raptors, Sergio Scariolo's Spain & Virtus Bologna and Xavi Pascual’s Panathinaikos Athens.

    This system is good for a team to play it if the other has a superstar like mike james. But if you play it you have to be sure that the other players of the oposite team are going to loose the open shots. That's why you can't use it against efes for example and it is akward that against monaco worked. With okobo diallo strazel you cant let someone free to shoot

      Thanks for the comment, it’s an interesting discussion.
      In the same GSW-Toronto series, Nurse also used Triangle & 2 against Curry & Klay, which, by many, was dubbed crazy or super risky, but it worked extremely well by throwing off Warriors and making it a mess of their offense.
      Sometimes what you think might be crazy even against the best teams (GSW, Efes) could work in reality because it’s something new for their offense to adjust to.

    • @DimShamrock
      @DimShamrock Před rokem

      @@AugustasSuliauskas Another explanation concerns mind games. Every team has one or two leaders. When those leaders have an off night, it has a negative effect on their teammates who could think "Man, if those guys can't get a shot made, what chance do I have against them?"
      Plus the European style of play is much more physical than the NBA, which makes somebody wanting to penetrate think twice.

    • @AugustasSuliauskas
      @AugustasSuliauskas Před rokem

      @@DimShamrock I believe a lot of psychology things are behind this. Others have to take shots they are not used to taking (and the amount of them), +being wide open sometimes can do you more harm than good, in terms of pressure making the shot and the rhythm of it.

    • @DimShamrock
      @DimShamrock Před rokem

      @@AugustasSuliauskas 100% agree.
      Pressure plays a huge role in big time situations.
      As you've probably noticed, I am a Panathinaikos fan, and this year, we're increasingly becoming dependent on Dwayne Bacon.
      Bacon is a player than has way too big of a load to carry at this moment, because we always expect him to score 15-30 points. And he does it with little support.
      However he has too many shot attempts, and it is easy to say that somebody had a great game, when he gets 20 attempts per game. 45% to 55% of those will go in, and you will think that you had a great game, even though this comes at a cost for your team.
      And that tends to work with small and mid-table teams. However, it doesn't with bigger teams, because they adjust to that one player. They have been doing it since the 80s with the Jordan rules.
      We joke around here, that this was the type of basketball that Aris played back in the late 80s. Give the ball to Galis, and let him score 50. That won't cut it anymore.
      And with a full OAKA, against our biggest rivals, there can't be more pressure than this. At least in my opinion.
      Anyway. Like your work, it looks professional, and you three are the first Europeans I've ever seen covering European basketball like this. So, that being said, loosen the smile and the sarcasm, you come off as smug sometimes, even though I know you don't mean to.
      One topic I'd like to see you guys discuss is the new role of Radonjic in Panathinaikos. And if you think giving him the keys to the Technical Director position was the right decision for Giannakopoulos to make. Especially after that loss.
      Because it's like if my little cousin got an F in a test, and I would reward him with an iPhone.

    You need to have excellent defenders, Crvena Zvezda with Branko Lazić and now Stefan Lazarević often uses box&1 defense in critical moments. Duško Ivanovic is a master tailor for adapting different defenses for each individual of the opposing team. You should watch his defensive masterclass against Partizan, for example.

    It's ridiculous to call a defensive tactic "ridiculous". It's all in the game, learn the counters and trust your teammates. All plans have strengths and weaknesses and it all boils down to how much of your homework you've done when watching tape.
    Now with this out of the way, let's turn to 2011 EL playoffs that other people have mentioned below. At this point in history, box+1 wasn't common at all; it was primarily a college basketball defense, where it is more frequent to have a 5-star prospect player against you, whose level of talent is vastly greater than his teammates, and one player can influence the game more than in the pros. People commonly believe that box+1 is an underdog defense; you're the worse team so you try to steal the game. 2011 Barcelona was indeed the favourites, but Panathinaikos was more than a solid team. Obradovic correctly saw that box+1 was fit for purpose on Navarro, not because his team was inferior, but because Barcelona was structurally unable to counter it, as their wings were not shooting consistently enough, and the other two prime guards were either non-factors from downtown (Rubio) or not playing off the ball/around screens (Lakovic). Meanwhile, he had a young, speedy guard fresh out of the NCAA (Calathes) against an aging Navarro, and a box which frequently consisted of Sato/Diamantidis up front, and Fotsis/Batiste at the back - passing lanes blocked all over. Interesting addition: since offenses against box+1 usually try to screen their star player away from his defender, Calathes used to "shadow" those picks a lot: he played over the pick to stop Navarro's 3-point shot, but let him drive past towards Sato or Diamantidis and follow him from behind, trapping him when he got to the box.
    Game, set and match. Basketball is a game of mismatches.

    • @Sarraqin
      @Sarraqin Před rokem

      Interestingly, this defense takes a toll on the defending team as well. The player hounding the other team's star can't really contribute on the offensive end; Panathinaikos could never have done that with Diamantidis instead of Calathes, just like the Raptors could never have Kawhi on Steph. It's all how you utilise your personnel.
