Plant-based milk can be pretty expensive depending on where you live, but I've found that oat milk (and lots of other plant-based milks) are very easy to make at home. You can save quite a bit of money over time, by making it yourself. Another added bonus is that you avoid any unwanted additives. The only downside really is that you miss out on some added nutrients, however, you can find them in many vitamin supplements! I would definitely recommend trying it out!
So many commercially available plant-based milks are too watered down and have stuff that are designed for shelf life and profitability and not for health. Making your own is the way to go!
I’ve made almond milk in a blender and I don’t think it’s very good but then I didn’t have a nut milk bag. And oat milk requires a specific digestion like manufacturing process to have the same sweet taste as Oatly.
@@nuclearcatbaby1131 yeah it can be difficult to replicate the exact taste of store bought oat milk, but it can still taste great, especially if you add a sweetener like dates, honey or syrup!
@@lrkehager1729 That’s not healthy. I mean oats are a poor source of fats and proteins. I’d rather make milk out of nuts that are low-carb.

It's important to mention when talking about soy and deforestation, that at least 70% of the soy responsible of deforestation is actually used for animal farming... the soy used for plant based milk is not the same one as the one responsible of deforestation.
Yes!
And that soy is being used to feed dairy cows!
Indeed, most vegan soy products have a sustainable soy farming label. On the other hand if you buy dairy milk or meat you have no way of checking if the cow was fed a whole bunch of GMO soy straight from the Amazon or not.
Exactly!

I found almond milk to be gritty and far too sweet. Id rather drink water actually. I cant actually afford plant milks. And my favourite winter food oats, turn out to be full of glyphosate. So oatmilk is out.
@@helenamcginty4920 you can find one item in any food that is bad for you, there’s literally no human outcome data showing that oats are bad for consumption but there’s a lot of good outcomes. If you choose to not eat foods because of one of their components that might be bad for you, you should only be drinking water
Any reduction in meat/dairy deserves encouragement imo, great to hear it! If you want some meat alternatives that are minimally processed (unlike Beyond/Impossible/Morningstar) I recommend Dr. Praegers and Quinoa Cowboy.
I started this video praying for oat meal to be one of the best, YESSSS !! it's really my favorite and I'm happy to hear that it contributes less to deforestation and uses up less water
On an economical level, I think it’s also important to factor in where you live! Take rice milk from countries big on rice production, and coconut milk from tropical countries for example. Supporting locally produced milk made from locally abundant products is better than importing soy and oat milk!
Importing oat milk? Oats are by far the most economical way of producing milk as most places on earth already grow oats (for breads/cereals)
@@suzyocean7392 Where I’m from, I don’t really see much of oat milk because soy is definitely the go-to alternative to dairy. I must have overlooked it and generalized for everywhere else, sorry for that! 😅
@@crabjunie I don't know where you live, but soy is grown a lot in Europe, the brand I use is grown in France, so it really depends where you live but soy can be super easy to access locally. Most other soy products I buy are grown in Austria (the country I live in). Same goes for oats, they're very easy to grow here and I can even make my own oat milk for basically pennies. :)
@@cablesandcrochet Whoa that’s really cool, great way to save up on groceries then! I live on the other side of the world tho so our situations are really different haha. Oats aren’t agreeable with the Philippine climate so we don’t grow them commercially, just rely on product imports. Soy is a bit better off, but local soybean production is low and we still also rely on imports. Rice and coconut milk aren’t as popular here as soy milk, but I’m hoping that’ll change sooner or later because those are the crops we grow in abundance 😊
I think. it's also important to consider the ethical aspects of production too. For instance, dairy milk involves the enslavement of sentient beings, who are continually artificially impregnated to induce milk production, and then have their calf ripped away from them as soon as they're born. But wait, there's more: if the calf is a male, they will usually be shot on site or shipped to a slaughterhouse for veal. Aaaaand, once the cow has gone through a few pregnancies, which has usually worn her body down so much, leading to troubles standing up or infections, and her milk production declines, she is finally shipped to the slaughterhouse as well.
It's best to avoid causing such direct pain and suffering to sentient beings!
One aspect of plant based milk that is overlooked in this video are that plant milks last a lot longer in the fridge and are less likely to contribute to food waste.
I notice soy goes bad if it isn’t kept cool but for sure. Oat lasts ages.
A gallon of milk lasts me 2-3 days max but if that’s not the case for you yea that’s a compelling fact
It does last for ages. Probably because of all preservatives that are added to it. Not sure if it’s a good thing
If you’re concerned about waste then plant milk is the last thing you should drink.
@@aRecount Pretty sure this video says exactly not what you said.
I think it also really depends what you’re using it for! I love dairy milk cheeses, oat milk drinks, almond milk in cereal, coconut milk in curries etc.
Yeah I like coconut milk as much as dairy in curries but it’s not good for making cream of mushroom soup. Haven’t tried plant based cheese but my gut instinct is that there’s as of yet no appropriate substitute for dairy. Hopefully all dairy other than grass fed regenerative farming will go out of business.
Not if your allergic/intolerant to dairy!!
never thought about using them for different purposes. also I just realized that I don't have to have a huge fridge to do that, since plant-based milk doesn't deteriorate as fast as dairy 🤔thanks for sharing !
@@raydawg2115 If you're allergic/intolerant to dairy it's almost certainly a lactose intolerance. You can get dairy milk with the lactose removed, and many hard aged cheeses like proper cheddar have little to zero lactose, as the aging process breaks it down.

As far as I know, animal proteins ,for example, milk and meat, are much easier to be absorbed than any other plant proteins.Anyway,I love both of them😊
This video does not talk about the sugars in some of the plant based milks or the unhealthy hidden ingredients like oils that companies put in Oat milk to lower costs.
Our household switched from dairy to oatmilk a few months ago and we don’t miss dairy milk. If you’ve tried soymilk and not been a fan of the flavour I strongly recommend oatmilk. It’s as creamy as dairy and has a mild, subtly sweet flavour. I like it so much I drink it straight but we find it works well in everything from coffee, to cooking, and of course cereal. Unsurprisingly it makes amazing oatmeal!
Ok gonna remind my mom to buy oat milk thank you
I’ve made Mac and cheese with it too😋
not all.

this seems simple and healthy (though expensive)
Oat milk is junk food. It’s full of canola oil and sugar. It’s processed sugary breakfast cereal in liquid form.

The reason why soy bean production contributes to mass deforestation is because of the increasing demand to feed livestock... not because of the demand to create soy milk or other soy products.
Humans eat less than 10% of soy. The amount would only decrease if we didn't have more cows than people.
Thank you. ♡
@@CobaltContrast yes, and even of the small amount that is for human consumption, most is used for oil!
77% is used for animal feed.
The part of the grain used for animal feed is the by-product of the food produced for human consumption or fuel production. If there were no livestock to eat this, the same amount of grain would be grown, the same amount would go towards human food or fuel, just the by-product would be thrown away and wasted, instead of being fed to livestock, which in turn feed people.
@@mcguinnessqueen You're talking grain. Soy is not a grain, it's a legume and is mostly grown for animal feed at a lower grade than human-consumed soy
Oat milk is the best in taste too. I have a bit of the Trader Joe's oat beverage in my coffee everyday.
Really? I serously vomited after trying oat milk before.
For me it's always oat and rice milk✌️

Oat
You forgot to mention how oats are heavily sprayed with glyphosate
I drink 2% Lactose free cow milk, which has a shelf life of at least 2 months. So there's no waste. To me, there's absolutely no difference in the taste. It just cost more which is pretty much a wash because with the long shelf life I'm not pouring out sour milk.
Damn milk lasts you that long 😂
A gallon doesn’t last me two days
And you can buy the enzymes, and make it lactose free yourself.

for me I find lactose free milk too sweet. The manufacturers add sugar back in to make up for the lack of lactose (a sugar)
I know a lot of people dont care about our planet anymore but im so grateful that there are videos like these to help educate people who do want to save our planet. People should also watch how cows are being used to produce their milk, some cow farms are in horrible conditions where cows are confined side by side and never get to see the outside world. I hope after watching this video people can switch from cows milk to soy/oat milk ☺️
Depends on the farm
I'll keep drinking dairy. Thanks.
dairy milk is the best and the most versatile hmmmm
lets quit meat, lets all go vegan cuz plants foods can sustain the growing population. I bet no one will starve, India alone who is mostly vegetarian has "less" starvation than the rest of the world.
hope u get it
This doesn't "educate" people. This is shifting responsibility, like telling us it's our responsibility not to go grocery shopping because we encourage the store to use more power and water when the real responsibility lies with the corporation that owns the store. We are the easier target than those multi-billion dollar corporations and governments backed armies of lawyers and puppets that are committing the worse environment crimes with their factories, corporate districts, malls, waste, etc etc etc all running 24/7 all year. Many people are already trying to live a minimal lifestyle, but us little people are not the problem now are we?

Oat and soy is way better 👍
The nutrient commentary is irrelevant or misleading as they are fortified.

Pasteurization: The soy milk is pasteurized at a high temperature to kill any harmful bacteria or microorganisms and extend its shelf life.

One aspect of plant based milk that is overlooked in this video are that the plants used to create plant milks can not grow everywhere, they cause emissions due to the distance the product have to travel.
Maybe also focus on the cruelty involved in the dairy industry. Research it and you may be shocked... it rarely involves happy cows chomping grass in a field.
Exactly.
Watch dairy is scary
@@olhi8445 yup. Dairy milk is unhealthy and insanely cruel.
Agreed, the depiction in this video is absolutely wrong and misleading. Bad job Ted-Ed! 99% of cows don't live on grass fields, they live in factories and are heavily mistreated.
That's why raising your own livestock is best. We had 2 pigs, and we gave them plenty of care before they had to go. Factories are cruel, but raising from a good home gets the best of food.
We have a lot of cows nearby that eat on grass. I'm not sure what goes on with them, but they're not in cruel factories 24/7, I'm sure.
Oat milk is hands-down my favorite. From experience:
- I'm lactose intolerant so no OG milk.
- Soy milk gave me gas, lots of it.
- Almond milk irritated my stomach for some reason. Might be the carrageenan, but hard to find one without it around here.
- Hemp milk wasn't too bad. It was a bit too rich for my preference though, and a bit too specialized/expensive.
- Rice milk was the easiest to down by far, but a little on the expensive side.
- Coconut milk: If you can get past the flavor, it's honestly not a bad alternative imho. I couldn't get past the flavor.
Have you tried lactose free milk? I'm slightly lactose intolerant and I noticed using 2% lactose free milk is a lot easier on my stomach
@@dontshityourself I've tried it a couple months ago, it actually went down surprisingly well. Definitely would consider it now as a buy-candidate.
How strong is the oat flavor in oat milk? I thought about buying it but I was never sure so I’ve just been sticking to almond or soy. I’m super lactose intolerant so I can’t even tolerate lactose free milk and most diary for that matter
@@prettygurlrockx I mean, oats don't have too much flavor to begin with (but it also might be my bad sense of taste). In the US, they sell it in almost every supermarket. If you have access to oats, you can make it yourself too (it's just strained oat+water, look online for tutorials).
My thought process is, if you really want to drink "milk" in any form, 5 mins/$5 is worth it just to try it out.
@@eskay_mochi I got into oat milk because almond milk was giving me stomach problems. Later on I found this organic almond milk with only almonds, water, and sea salt and haven’t had a stomach ache since. Carrageenan might be a problem…
One big argument I missed in the video is that the plant based milks do not require the harming of animals.

Very true
Dairy milk: basic you know what it tastes like
Soy milk: usually pretty sweet, tastes good in drinks (coffee, smoothies, etc.) Do not recommend for your cereal...
Almond milk: can be a bit watery, pretty bland
Oat milk: tastes pretty close to dairy milk, not watery or overly sweet, has thicker texture. My personal favorite
Now, that really helped me. Thanks!
why you dont recommend soy milk for cereal? i use soy milk for my cereal and it tastes good
I also use soymilk in my cereal
As a guy who drinks both soy and dairy, soy taste less better in cereal so I don't drink it with cereal.
Be careful with soy milk if you have cysts
Best milk is non homogenized whole cow milk from a good local dairy farm.
Dairy milk doesn’t contribute to deforestation. The land used for cattle production are plains where there are little trees or need for habitat destruction, along with the fact that grazing actually promotes healthier soil
