    The overhead air filters are mostly for the dust you can't see. They scrub out the harmful tiny particles that stay airborne for a long time. Anything you can see will generally succumb to gravity before they reach a ceiling filter ;)

    • @HewAndAwe
      @HewAndAwe  Před 2 lety +1

      The harmful shit, yeah exactly, theres been some studies how useful they are and wasn't good - easier to just open a door or window, that'll do WAY more good than those things!!!

      @@HewAndAwe good to know... I have a 5 sided workshop and balmy Aussie days usually so airflow aint much of an issue ;)

      @ReferenceFidelityComponents Před rokem +1

      @@FixitFingers I use an AC400 and anyone claiming they don't do any good is in denial, as that's utter BS. You should see what collects in mine after just an afternoon running when the workshop looks relatively clean! It's all the very fine stuff you'd be breathing in otherwise!

  • @ReferenceFidelityComponents

    Box extractors like the Record units are pretty good to be fair at cleaning residual fine dust from the air. I have one in my workshop sat on top of a shelf where after a lot of saw work, the air can be cleaned of dust and clears fully within an hour. I haven't put a tester on it but it's noticeably cleaner than without it running and the filter collects loads of very fine dust so I remove it weekly and bring it outside to vacuum or brush of the dust. I'd rather it was in the filter than inside of my lungs! My saw's dust extraction is woeful despite upgrading to a better cabinet saw, it's little better than my old GTS10 XC.

    • @HewAndAwe
      @HewAndAwe  Před rokem

      Do you mean those filters that hang from the ceiling? I read a an article about them and they pretty much said they’re a gimmick, I find having the door open to the workshop to the outside makes a huge difference, works like a air sprayer. I also can’t help but feel dust goes only one way with gravity in affect so how could they be any good. But I haven’t tried one to say.. I hope you had a lovely Christmas! 🍻😊🍻

    • @ReferenceFidelityComponents
      @ReferenceFidelityComponents Před rokem +1

      @@HewAndAwe Yes, although mine (Record AC400) sits atop a shelf unit. No, they're not gimmicks at all, that's plainly nonsense by whoever claimed that. They offer high air flow filtration and in my modest 4.5 x 3m workshop can remove significant amounts of fine dust and turnover the complete air volume within the workshop many many times per hour filtering down to one micron. Filtration rate is 409 cubic feet/minute which is significant. I definitely wouldn't be without it now. Dust hangs in the air for a considerable time is witnessed bythe amount collected in the filter. You'd be surprised by how much fine dust is hanging in the air. I do wear a mask now since a CT scan showed dust in my lungs. Only heavier larger dusts particles settle out quickly but this fine stuff which does the damage to your lungs is what you have to watch for. The fine stuff can hang about for a long time. Happy New Year !

    Hi Ben, regarding a motor change for you extractor; I wouldn't.
    The motor will run at a fixed speed (probably 3krpm) and a more powerful motor would run at the same speed. So unless your current motor can not maintain its speed while running going to a more powerful motor won't help.
    To check if you are getting full motor speed when attached to the tools, disconnect the incoming pipe from the extractor (thus removing the restriction of the pipework) while running and see if the motor suddenly speeds up.
    To move more air you need to look at the impeller size/design. If you were to increase the impeller size some how, then you power requirement will have gone up, so may need a more powerful motor to spin it.

    • @HewAndAwe
      @HewAndAwe  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Chris, thank you for this, makes perfect sense I also realised upping the power would need a 16amp supply I only have one and that supplies two tools and cant have them both on at the same time.. I'm gonna check the extractors like youve said, I have a feeling there might be an issue with the filters maybe slowing it all down - they're bag filters. Thanks Chris, I appreciate you spending the time to help me out there, nice one!!! Hope you have a lovely weekend! 🍻🍻🍻

    Nice mod with the alu tape and faux leather. I noticed those gaps even on my small dewalt table saw, and was thinking of something like that, but wasn't confident if the constant pressure generated by the running blade and the dust extraction (ehmm.. 'henry vacuum cleaner') will rip it apart and shred it into bits! And yes, dust extraction from the top seems to be key as well. seen that in a lot of big industrial units.

    • @HewAndAwe
      @HewAndAwe  Před 2 lety

      Ive run that same set up on my old Bosch site for near 8 or so years, never had an issue and always connected to 1.5hp extractor, the worst that could happen it comes loose and clogs henry's nose up

    the never ending quest for dust control! my current system has me position my saw close to the door, improvements are being made bit by bit, but I've still got a mountain to climb. are you running a different extractor to your top extractor thing?

    • @HewAndAwe
      @HewAndAwe  Před 2 lety

      Youre bang on there, I say to everyone leave your door open to vent outside, its free dust extraction, way better than those rip of boxes hanging from the ceiling... some peeps just dont get the idea! Most of my tools have their own extractors, the table saw has one line in then split to the under and over collection, I need to blow out the upper filter and see the difference I havent done that in years. I have tried a LVHP on just the crown guard extraction but it made very little difference!

  • @tonyworkswood
    @tonyworkswood Před 2 lety +1

    Hi Ben. I was going to suggest use a bigger extractor but if your maxed out on your power supply now that won't work. Can you position your extractor closer to reduce the length it has to pull through? Change the extraction pipe to a flat smooth bore if it's one of those concertina types as they cause a lot of turbulence and loss in suction. You haven't any sharp bends in your extraction pipe/hose have you, they don't help either. Blow the filters out, empty the bag and don't let the bag get too full before emptying it again. Almost forgot, are you using the maximum extraction pipe/hose possible from your extractor to your table saw. I think your dust extractions suction was good on those tests you did. Tony

    • @HewAndAwe
      @HewAndAwe  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you Tony! I have pretty much what you have said, large dia hose right to the tool then reduced down, no right hand bends, extractors couldn't be any closer - the concertina type hose I'll look into getting rid of and I'm a nightmare for not checking the bags are full, they're in another room away from me, like I said its good and I agree but I'd really like perfection, with out that crown guard extraction on 3hp saw it covers me in dust...

    • @tonyworkswood
      @tonyworkswood Před 2 lety +1

      @@HewAndAwe Hi Ben, I don't have an extraction on my crown guard. What size HP motor is on your extractor and hose diameter to the saw blade when reduced down in size? Tony

    • @HewAndAwe
      @HewAndAwe  Před 2 lety +1

      @@tonyworkswood I think it’s 1.5hp and once reduced down 76mm

    • @tonyworkswood
      @tonyworkswood Před 2 lety +1

      @@HewAndAwe Hi Ben. I think your 76mm is restricting the suction where it's needed. That 3HP saw of yours can remove some serious wood fast. Could you not alter the extraction to take the full size hose. I think the amount of wood being removed by the saw blade is too much for the extraction port size to cope with effectively inside the confined saw blade enclosure you've made. The excess is being thrown up the back of the saw blade at you like you've mentioned. Just try it without the extraction on and see if you get a ridiculous amount of sawdust shooting up out the back of the saw, just a thought. Tony

      Thank you Paul! I got a bit lucky with that saw, I wont go into detail but the saw was found for only 600 quid, fortunately it came with all the parts or I was able to save what was needed, bar that what was spent after that was something that could of waited, like all the plastics and 3hp motor - I digress, what I mean is you if you do your homework and really hunt about you can have the same saw which is by far better built than anything on the market to day for less money than a good site saw. I mean you dont really have to do a lot of work to get it usable, its just nice to make it look like it used to.. If you ever wanna buy a saw like that ask me about what youve found b4 you buy and I'll make sure you dont buy a lemon, new parts are VERY expensive!
