I just bought my 48 on Sunday after many good reviews such as this. Now I have to learn how to ride it - it's my first bike! Thanks!
You're going to love it brother, trust me. It was my first bike after a long 15 year layoff of riding and after a few mods I dig it. You will tons of compliments out on the road so prepare yourself. Enjoy man-
Thanks man. I just passed my MSF class and then I can pick up and ride my bike! Let the fun begin!
Darryl McKillop Congrats, I see you live on the rock. Perfect riding weather. If you end up doing pipes, air cleaner, and race tuner (aka Harley Tax) that 48 will go from 60hp to 80hp so keep that in mind if you want to spice up that engine so it can breathe.
Sweet, that's a nice bike good luck mate
Parker Fairbanks Oh that's good to know! Funny enough, I haven't thought about performance mods yet. I'm more focused on trying to stay on the bike and not hit anything. haha. I want some V&H slip ons in black and black the remaining parts out, then maybe think about the performance side of things. Do you buy anything locally or all online?
Nice review. I got a chance to ride a 48 at one of the International Motorcycles shows and it was pure fun. I got to ride it about 35 miles and your couldn't chisel the smile off my face.
I bought one in January and love it, I have already switched to the upgraded solo saddle and will be having a set of Vance and Hines Short Shot staggered pipes installed next week. No complaints at all and this is my 3rd. Sportster.
So far the most elegance 48 rider I ever seen. The style of the rider & the look of the bike blend together in defining the real meaning of classic. Auto Trader always satisfied me with their review videos.
The best bike reviews on the web, period! Unlike the other sites, magazines, you tube channels, very informative, fun to watch and great cinematography/photography. Please keep on bringing more of these.
If I could, I would buy a 2014 '48 and keep it for 40-50 years before I sold it. I collect classic minibikes and go karts, and I would love to buy a brand new bike and keep it for all that time. Imagine how classy the bike will be in 2064 when we are all riding on hovercrafts!
Auto trader makes the Best bike reviews in youtube ! Keep doing these great reviews!
Amazing comment! it's much appreciated.
sike
Had my 48 for a year now, never missed a beat and with a set of pipes, filter and stage one tune, it's a hoot plus does keep your licence in tact although it's definitely not slow off the line to 100.... just as you said, short blasts are where it works best. Love it \m/
Beautiful cinematography and excellent editing. My compliments to the entire team!!
I bought 48 in February and I love it. I'm a new rider but this bike still surprises me. I tighten the suspension and it now handles great. I get about 68 to 89 miles per tank depending on how hard I ride. I'd say it's a great starter bike which you can beef up with some pipes and air intake, should bump it up a good 20 noticeable horsepower. Not the best on the highway but is a champ around town.
+Carl “one eye” Grimes I just put on BUB exhaust and my 48 is so much faster now. the exhaust system actually weights less then the one muffler from the stock exhaust. Also, it's extremely loud now haha. February will mark a year of owning the 48 and I'd have to say it's a great purchase and could recommend it for anyone wanting to ride a motorcycle.
+Carl “one eye” Grimes I only changed the pipes. I was thinking of adding intake and power commander soon, waiting till after inspection since at this point no codes have come up. My friend who rides super sports thinks the bike is in the 70's hp. I'd say for a beginner (like me) to ride a year stock then add exhaust, it's just what the bike needed to make it a bike you could keep for life.
still debating on changing the gas tank lol. $4 fill ups are nice but 100 mile range is annoying especially when you ride in a group.
That Brit gave a great review,, like the honesty..
You are spot on as you guys say..
I like it, this might be the better bike.
Good choice
Probably the best 48 review on CZcams
Thanks for your comments, John. We've just started producing bike reviews for Auto Trader so if there are any particular models you'd like to see us review next then please do shout. All the best, J
I am collecting my 48 on Saturday, looking forward to adding it to my little collection of Beemer 1200 GS and Suzuki 1250 Bandit S. My universe is now complete.
Just bought myself a hd48 last month! I got the golden candy tank (2013 version), it is a stylish bike indeed!
Why is everyone saying Jon looks enormous. I completely disagree. I'm 6'2 and definitely going to get one!
The reality is that the bike tries to capture that old school low slung/slammed look. If you look at any bike from the 'those days' and even Frodo would look like giant.
Really nice review. .
Worst gloves I've seen . . Ever. .
Thanks for watching Ashman Dragon - your comment on the gloves made me laugh! I'll make sure they stay in the cupboard from now on...!
Its all good bro. . Your a real pro on the review man. really nice job. . YOur MUm is looking for her gardening gloves though. . :D
Ashman Dragon
I agree about the gloves. It looks like he's about to do the dishes
I also agree about the review. I own a 48. I changed the suspension and now it rides perfect.
First Last I put the Progressive monotubes in the front and a pair of 13" Progressive 970's on the rear. Also a Mustang Wide Touring Vintage Solo seat & pillion, a 21" H-D detachable sissy bar and a 4.5 gallon fuel tank from J&P Cycles.
Harley likes to sell you the low slung, stripped down look (which I really do like) but with only 2" of travel the comfort isn't there. So it really depends on what kind of riding you want to do. Short local jaunts or longer rides? The seat will make a huge difference so don't cut corners. I used the stock seat for 17k miles and it started causing numbness (and this was long after I changed out the suspension). With the Mustang seat, I ride 4 hours and it feels like I went around the block (keep in mind the suspension does add to the comfort but the seat will probably make the biggest difference in comfort). As far as rear suspension goes, I wanted something highly adjustable and the 970's do that very well. There are other (less expensive) options and based on reviews they work quite well so don't just pass them by. Do your research and figure out how you want to ride. I still have all the stock parts. All I need is a few hours and I can change the bike to suit my needs.
Hope this helps.
I've been looking everywhere with no luck finding these gloves(in blue, that is). I, for one, love them. Any idea where I could buy these?
Jon is wearing Wolverine 1000 miles boots.
ha ha! well, if someone asks...
Auto Trader Do a review on 2016 Forty eight. Love all your reviews
What goggles is he wearing?
I emailed long in advance, went to my local Harley dealer, and they could not provide a Forty-Eight for me to try. This was because they had one standing in the window, which was sold. Alright. Happens. I got to ride an XL1200 Sportster that by most accounts is the same bike. Except some of those that count. I gotta give it this, I looked in my reflection as I was passing windows, and I looked great on it. The nice laid back seating of a harley is also very comfortable.. But as the man says in the video, it vibrates like crazy. And my friend who tried an Iron 883 could not keep a conversation at red lights because he was being shaken to death by a brand new 2017 motorcycle. That is not alright to me. It wouldn't have been alright even on a Ural, but even less so on the iconic Harley. The big, in your face difference between an XL1200, Iron 883 and the forty eight is the footrests. They are not in a forward position, and sitting straight up and down on a harley is like drinking a beer in a pub while squatting: absolutely ridiculous, and uncomfortable. I didn't know where to put my feet on stops as the footrests were in the way of the natural position for standing a leg down.. I was dissapointed. We were dissapointed. When I came back to my 25 year old, somewhat rusty, outdated lawnmower of a Kawasaki EX500, I felt way better. And that is not the way it is supposed to be.
Good review for a British reviewer. They are normally compere everything to super sport bikes and just don't understand harleys and cruisers.
Jon, I've just ordered the very same goggles you are wearing on this video, I wouldn't know they existed if I hadn't watched this. And I'm importing them from England(to Brazil , freight from the UK is cheaper than from the US). My new HD 48 will be delivered this month and this review helped me to pull the trigger. I keep watching this everyday dreaming of it, can't wait!
Delighted to hear it! The Barstow is a great goggle from 100% and you also get a clear screen within the pack if you don't want to ride with tints. As for the 48, I'm absolutely made up - as will the team be - to hear our reviews have been able to help inform your decision. You're going to have loads of fun on the 48 - it has a great stance and produces a wonderful noise, just keep an eye on those fuel levels! And of course, please send over some pics when it's delivered, we'd love to see it. Ride safe, Jon
Hi Pinball Ball,
How is the 48? We'd love to hear from you now you've had it a while.
Auto Trader It has been 6 months and I really like this bike for the "occasional blasts", like Jon said in the video. Everybody notice this bike, you feel like riding a Ferrari, attracting viewers attention everywhere, and everybody thinks your are the coolest. Everybody but you, lol, cause the Harley engine can get really, I mean really HOT. I live in Brazil, so I must avoid getting stuck in slow traffic in warmer seasons, thats my only complaint, the rest is just like this perfect review tells. And the HOT engine "can be cool" if you live in places where the weather is mostly cold, because you don't have to worry about freezing, since you won't freeze riding the 48.The little tank doesn't really matter if you buy this bike to use it for its original purpose: urban ride, short countryside rides and boulevard cruising or bar hopping. Its really a smooth ride, I couldn't imagine since its my first Harley and everybody kept saying Harley rides are brutal. The ABS brakes are incredibly soft, but the shift pedal is not, thats the thing that reminds me I'm in a Harley. That and the noise of course, I changed my pipes and you can check it in my channel, but you must wear earphone and turn the volume all the way up the get closer to the real noise. Its bad ass, but classy and traditional at the same time, girls get intrigued and curious.
Thanks so much for letting us know about the bike and what it is like living with it. The insight into the heat is really interesting feedback. I'm sure Jon will be commenting when he is back in the office as he'll be very pleased to hear the update. Happy riding!
Auto Trader's new bike reviews!
What kind of watch is John wearing?
Usman Sarwar Jon is wearing a Tag Carrera.
Thank you.
Hey bro, I gonna buy a 48 this 2020 or starting 2021...I watched many reviews about it...but for me this is the best. I'm Peruvian but live in Virginia - US. Best regrets from here, good vibes and good rides.
*best regards....(sorry about that haha)
Damn I miss Bristol, wish I had the HD 48 to ride while I was there.
my dream bike
I have this bike, bloody love it! Customisation is a must!!!
This is one of the best reviews ever on youtube. You're pro!
Bought my 48 two weeks ago, and have put about 350 miles on it. This review is pretty much dead on. The only complaint I have about it (other than tiny gas tank) is the front shocks. They are absolutely punishing on rough roads. One correction to this review: ABS is NOT standard on all 48's. I paid $800 extra for it. I also got the keyless security option, which is really nice.
Range is not 60 miles. Many reviewers are missing this. The fuel light comes on with 1.2 gal remaining in tank according to owners manual. That puts you at 100 milesish. I am going to test mine with a follow car soon. I will let you know.
what are the songs played in the video?
Oh wow, neat ride and I've always wanted an HD and this style rocks! 60 miles to a tank is the crutch though as just to pick up the bike from the dealer is over 150 miles from me so wow...
It'll do a little better than 60 a tank, probably 100, but you'd be pushing it. I wish they would bring the nightster back
My friend has one of these and out the gate it's surprisingly fast, I call it the Staffy because it's small but stocky
Thart bike is surprisingly faster then people think. As for groung clearance...just keep grindind the peds on the asphalt till the exhaust or something else touches. It will cost quite a bit on the boots though. I got up to 135 kms out of the tank once, just needs some organizing when you ride... Suspension from 2016 are much better. Torque delivery makes you want to twist the throttle but becomes very very sketchy on wet roads: instant torque and poor tires. Braking becomes an issue as well when in a emergency or riding hard: easy to lock up. It is a great bike!
A Harley with ABS? I had 7 Harley's during 20 years and none of them could lock their brakes! ;-)
I really was wondering about the boots haha they're nice! Thanks!
I love The 48's gas tank !!! 😍
60 miles on a tank of petrol, that's ridiculous !!!
I gave you a up on your comment. What I did was buy saddle bags and a two gallon gas can, problem solved. And yes, 60 miles is just stupid.
Lovely streets of Bristol in the background there :)
Last week I was driving the Indian Scout. Looks fantastic, building quality is great. The suspension was to hard. Usually you expect a soft suspension because the Indian looks like a cruiser. The Harley Davidson looks amazing but there isn't enough power. I am interested in your opinion.
Very good review..I was at an Harley Davidson location and the Forty eight caught my eye.
The new Cbr600rr would be great from you, I like your work ! Well done
+SVC After taking your advice re the cbr600rr he went on a quick evening ride
before his evening meal on you tube TT 2012 ISLE OF MAN CBR600RR ROB
BARBER PRACTICE easy see why a popular starter bike over the pond lol
enjoy
Good review , this bike is really nothing more than a cool bar hopper , not meant for any kind of distance , she's a beaut .
+n2o4me Stupid fucking comment. I know of people riding across country on Japanese 125cc bikes without issue. Many people ride LONG distance in short time on these bikes. Just check right here on youtube. There's videos of people doing it on the Iron 883.
It's not good for distance because of the very small peanut tank you moron .
Great review !! Have you also reviewed the iron 883 ?
+Suraj Iyer We haven't, we'll see if Jon has it on his list!
I like this guy's reviews. Nice bike too.
that dressing info is totally awesome! details make you successful! I am totally following this channel and getting my thurxton soon!
Great vintage throwback styling. Not crazy about a 2 gallon tank.
All these have loud music playing over the pipes. Wanna hear it taching up as it rides, not revving at idle. The tunnel would have been a great place to crank it up, stop the music and hear it sing. Stock pipes or not.
great video thanks for sharing with us, my mate has a Harley 72 Sportster he rides with me while we video our rides in Cyprus and he has the same problem with the small tank but he loves the bike,
Fantastic motorcycle.....enjoy it for what it is!
Hi, what's song you used towards end of the video (the one with seven days)? Shazam can't recognize it. Loved the review, thank you.
Had a sportster 1200c back in in 2001. Worst handling and performing motorcycle I've ever owned compared to Hondas... But for some reason I like this fat front tire, the new rear fender/lights. Kind of want one again now.
Please test the New Indian Scout 2015 Model! Great Bike-Reviews!
Hey Bendyd Rost, we'll be sure to ride the new Scout in the next few weeks. Are you looking to buy this or the H-D 48? J
Acebedo which Progressive rear shock did you do on your 48? Are they totally worth it? I'm looking at the 430 or 444 but I actually like the look of the 412 the best
Great review! Def won’t get one now, thanks for the heads up!
Brother just wondering if you will get the opportunity to review the 72 HD . . Its ride is awesome.. Not for everyone but if you like the 48 you will LOveeeeeee it
bought one brand new in 2014 my review after 7000 miles it has killer looks but now lets ride it number 1 the seat is a joke 2 the fuel tank is kool but useless 3 the factory mirrors are kool but useless 4 factory bars look kool but are not a ride postion i like.final review is you put up with a lot to look kool
I was out as soon as he said a range of 60 miles... why do HD insist on fucking their bikes up
Very good review. Great job
fantastic video Jon I´m 1´78 cms think it will be comfortable for me
Great news Blay, enjoy!
Jon Quirk
Thanks Jon, greeting
Please review 2016 48...
I'm finally getting my first bike! im 17, my dad and I have been looking at the forty eight, I'm sold on the design. is there an easier ride with a similar design I should also look at?
Please do one on the Street 750, I'm wondering which one I should get.
I’m 6’ 3’’, would I be ok on this? I absolutely love these.
With forward foot controls, absolutely yes...
H.D. needs to make this same bike with a 2000cc engine 18" front&rear fat high profile tires and chain drive. Same style tank but with 4.5gallons fuel. It would sell.
Can you do a review on the 2015 Harley Davidson sportster nightster 1200?
does anyone know what music/song is playing in the beginning?
Great review and the bike itself!
Thanks - your reviews are just right
Bloody marvellous. Now I want to trade my 2 month old CB500F for one of these. Thanks a bunch!
Anyone notice how Jon looks like Ewan McGregor?
Great Review as Always. Would like to request a review about the new Harley Street 500 if possible. Cheers!
Xcalibur Prime We'll let Jon know!
Much obliged. Thanks guys!
Harley Davidson motorcycle rule
what is the song at 2.22
please do a review of the new Harley Davidson Roadster 1200.
I notice that the Foot pegs are not forward
I think its Harley's bets looking bike, but it does vibrate like crazy and feels like your gonna fall off over 30mph.
#autotrader : Will you give us more reviews like this, that is more harley davidson bikes reviews, i've seen this review since it first got Released, and i've been waiting since few years for your awesome reviews.
I've seen the Street Glide, street750 Reviews too. I just keep seeing this Review again and again, till i get bored, its so awesome.
All i am expecting is more Reviews on Bikes, i guess your team is only concentrating on CARS, If i get to see more Reviews on Sportsters or Dyna i would be really happy.
-YOUR FAN FROM INDIA
Thanks for your comment. Jon the Editor in Chief and bike reviewer has moved on to pastures new. We will be testing a new bike reviewer very soon.
this bike got my attention and it look so cool
Ah, good ol' Bristol.
PLEASE. DO A REVIEW OF HD SOFT SLIM
great video.. but what song is it in this video? thks
just bought a HD 48 a month ago
l live in india, so unable to but that silver glossy 48 as only standard colours are available.
I dont know the actual BHP fig.?
is it around 80?
Harley Davidson don't reveal their bhp figures so we are unable to tell you the actual bhp.
Thanks autotrader
beautiful music .what song is that ! Monday comes ..
i wonder which bike is better??48 or xdiavel s???
Can you suggest for me what harley should I get, I am 5,5. I am leaning on iron 883, but looking at low riders too.
Hi Lester!
Our bike correspondent Phil West has your answer...
The smallest, most manageable Harleys are the 883 Sportsters, particularly the Hugger (now discontinued), which was specifically made for women/shorter people and has an ultra-low seat height. This has now been replaced by the 883 Superlow.
However, most 883s (and 1200) Sportsters are pretty low anyway, including the Iron, 1200 48 and 1200 Custom. In addition, last year, H-D introduced the novice-orientated Street 750, which is really low too, and cheap-ish, although some may argue it's not as authentically Harley.
It all ultimately depends on your physical size/strength and how comfortable you feel with them. I’d suggest going to a H-D dealer and ask to sit on all of the above and take it from there.
Hope that helps,
Thanks!
What shoes are those? Nice bike as well!
Order the bike with the 3.3 gallon peanut tank.
I'm not smart on bikes but can put an extra person on that bike
***** Hi there, the seat and pegs can be changed to accommodate a pillion.
+Auto Trader also is it good for beginners and how tall you have to be on it
How much does this go for? In India it goes for around 19000 USD or 10000 pounds
Can you do a review on the new 48?
Those are some lovely boots
Nice bike. What's the name of the song at 2:20?
Hi Martin, Here are the songs for the video:

I take it Los Angeles to New Orleans is out of the question then? Just like the music.
I would like information for this motorcycle enconrei not anything on the net, the top speed of it, if she and comfortable for both the pro motocicliesta as croup, and she also chatters know how rumors of iron 883, thanks
Well i was planning on buying a harley but i am confused between the iron 883 or the forty eight for indian roads. Plz suggest
Jaskirat Veer Singh The 883 is cheaper to buy and (marginally) easier to ride, but I personally love the stance of the 48 and the noise you get from a 1200. Good luck!
Both make excellent road-bridge construction materials.
Whats the babes of the song?
Where are the boots from mate?
How tall is he?
He is approximately six foot tall.
Who is the background music in the beginning?
Hi Darnell, The track is called Breathing In The Pieces by Martin Felix Kaczmarski and you can find it here: www2.audionetwork.com/Track/SearchKeyword?keyword=breathing%2Bin%2Bthe+pieces&sort=8
name of background music
Also want to know this. Tried googling the lyrics to no avail.
nice job
Great review!
Whar's the hp of the bike(?
Hi Chris,
Harley doesn't reveal official horsepower figures so, to be honest, we don't know exactly.
