    Perhaps with a less expensive key duplicating machine, you can show us how to cut a key to code with your depth & space keys -- that should be a fun project for you -- I also noted you "widened" the key cuts post production, ha, ha

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  Před 3 lety +1

      I did not. I used the cutter where you don't need to widen them. It is fantastic.

      Also, yes. I will likely be doing that soon.

    Interesting video. As an aside can I ask why you choose that particular machine?

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  Před 3 lety +2

      The price is much cheaper than the fully automatic ones. Also, it is sort of a time tested machine and they last.

    Nice video and thank you for explaining the steps so well and the names & models of the tools you used! :D :D Question: So when you say the space & depth keys are good for those who don't have a key-cutting machine ... is the purpose to use them to help make a key for a lock when there is no existing key and someone is using a key blank and a file and they use the technique of wiggling the blank key in the lock and file down the markings a bit ... and the space & depth keys help them know how far down to file each time? ... or are they used for when you know the code of a lock (by looking it up on a paid locksmith site) but you don't have a key, so you can file one your self by lining up the right space & depth key and marking it so you know how far to file? I guess that second method makes more sense. Thanks once again!

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  Před 3 lety +1

      The latter is what they would be used for. But there is a way to decode a lock in the bitted position with a modified version (in theory and I am going to make a video at some point)

      @@HelpfulLockPicker Nice thank you sir ! :D :D

    • @adammorris8112
      @adammorris8112 Před 3 lety +1

      The first technique is called impressioning and doesn't need space and depth keys.
      These can be used to hand file a key to code or if you have a key duplicator then you can use that to duplicate the notches of the space and depth keys to cut a key to code.
      Key duplicators are usually significantly cheaper than code machines. A duplicator uses a pointer to trace the key on one side and a mechanically linked cutter on the other side cuts the blank. If your key is worn then the brand new duplicate will also be worn. While a code machine cuts to the correct depth every time.

      When you say "fix" do you mean "fit"? It is something you learn with experience. Also you can just try each key and see if the profile is a match

      Any locksmith supply store will sell you them and they are relatively cheap for most household key makes. $15 for an SC4 set for example.
