Really scary journey. Nobody did laugh at you. Monkey is a hindu god called "Hanumana". They spotted a reverted Muslimah.
Hanuman is a Vanara not a monkey, van (forest) nara (human) (Sanskrit) shows / describes a neanderthal being which was recorded near Hampi (Modern Day Karnataka, India) and some parts of China, and its called Hanuman, not Hanumana, the study of consciousness does not discriminate between types of beings as its believed that the omniscient/omnipresent seed that is in all beings cannot be discriminative in essence , hence hindus are normally vegetarians and refrain from eating beings closest to its DNA (animal/blood/bone/marrow) and show basic sensitivity to all life and life-force that is seen particularly animated , being of a particular religon is her own choice, so was going to batu caves - all are welcome to their choosing, superiority is in thought and action and not in embracing any particular religion, chief of it is definitely abstinence from spreading false information and hate , educate your self, love all serve all - respect all.
