Around 300-400 years ago, there were no clear mosque designs in Thailand. So villagers brainstormed together what the mosque might be like. In the end, they build a lot of old mosque similar to a pavilion in Buddhist temples. It shows the harmony of both Buddhists and Muslims.🥰

I met a Muslim brother on van when I traveled to Phuket years ago. We speak a little bit after he saw us didn't eat because we were not sure about the halal food. then he explain to us that there is a halal part on the food court. and he told us that he is Muslim too. His face so much similar to most Indonesian and Malaysian not to Thai people. I was so happy to know him. he works at Phuket airport. but the problem was he couldn't speak English and Melayu a little, sikit sikit :D
It's true that once I was in Thailand part of Padang Besar, and I was trying to ask for directions. It seems that nobody knows English or Malay. Even though it's a border town between Thailand and Malaysia. Almost all speak Thai including people from Malaysia.

I have relatives in Menara (Narathiwat @ minaret), last time I knew, they spoke in Malay language, Kelantan-Patani Dialect. They are Thai citizens, but they are Malays, some already worked in government sectors, even in Hat Yai. Let's embrace the difference, same in Malaysia, Siam are Siam, but they are Malaysian citizens. People doesn't like if their identity being erased, that's what spark the conflict in Southern Thailand during 40s at the first place. Just look at the Europeans, they still have the ethnic minorities like the Roma, Basque, Flemish and Ruthenian prospering with their own languages and cultures. The assimilations of the Malays from Ujung Sanglang (Phuket) to Setul (Satun) was quite rampant in the 19th century, now they're Thai-Muslims and can't speak Malay anymore and they themselves does not consider themselves as Malays. But it's okay, that's what they chose to be.

I sampled the Thai Muslim version of biryani at a street food market in Silom, Bangkok--it was very good, sweeter than South Asian biryani, but very tasty! And the couple who sold it were very nice
pattani is just a small province now. but fairly recently before 1909 this and neighbouring states were part of the larger patani sultanate that was in existence from the 1300s. over the centuries they share family ties with the other malay sultanates now in Malaysia especially the northern states of Kelantan and Terengganu.

The malays in southern Thailand are the same as the malays in Kelantan across the border in Malaysia. Same dialect of Malay spoken in both regions.

Actually, Muslim cities/countries are mostly very safe compared to non-Muslim cities/countries, except for those that are having conflicts. The reason is that Muslims don’t consume alcohol or use drugs, which are often the main culprits of crime.

It was a shame for me not to visit Pattani or Hat Yai being a Muslim from the UK. I went around Krabi twice where there is a good Muslim population there. Phuket has a decent Muslim population as well, and Bangkok has a lot of masjids and Halal markets too. I did visit Koh Lanta and Koh Lipe but they are tourist spots just like Krabi and Phuket.
Now you have something to do for next time
