Thank you for visit Pattani, i am from Pattani but living in Phuket.
3 provinces in deep south Thailand Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat mostly speak Malays in daily, but we also can speak Thai because we study Thai language at school since kindergarten. Additional study Malays , Arabic and English.
Very very few foreigners in Pattani and local people very shy.

I think they were chicken meatballs. And you can get ill from street food anywhere, but I guarantee that its much less in Thailand especially in this area which overall looks very clean

Pattani used to be an empire of the malays and was aid by the ottoman as a muslim province. That being said, the ottoman used to send many of her armies from the european side. So they mixed with the locals and made a beautiful nation of mix blood. That's why aome Pattani people have fair complexion and beautiful features. If you start studying the history of this empire you'll be in awe as how great they really are.
