  • Do these pencil drawing practice exercises to get better at drawing ellipses and to understand how ellipses change when applying perspective!
We'll start with simple exercises to loosen up by sketching ellipses using the hula-hoop method. Then, we'll practice applying perspective to ellipses in relation to a horizon line or eye level.
Finally, practice your sketching and shading skills as you complete a sketchbook project with me. We'll apply perspective to ellipses as we sketch some basic still life objects. As we work on this project you'll also deepen your understanding of how to know where to shade a drawing.
    Drawing exercises for improving ellipses:
    00:37 Drill 1 - Hulahoop method
    04:45 Drill 2 - Controlling ellipses
08.33 Drill 3 - Understanding and applying perspective
    15:35 Project - Sketching & Shading Basic 3D Objects

Thank you for this practice. I like how you present the example and explain how and why and I appreciate no music in the background. Well done and I look forward to to more to practice 👍

😂 at 8:47 I realized you were left handed. I was so involved in listening and watching. I am left handed and start on the right side of paper etc. Looking forward to possibly more left hand tips

Ha I'm actually glad to hear that as I do try to cater for both right handed and left handed by focusing more on the concepts and the skills than expecting people to just copy what I'm doing. I'm used to having right handed students so generally I work left to right when I'm teaching but you should definitely work in whatever way feels most comfortable for you! All the techniques are exactly the same, you may just feel it's more natural to move your hand in a direction from right to left and to also work your way across the page from right to left :)

You're welcome and thanks for your support! I went a bit overboard with this one and it was actually a bit longer but it was getting a bit unreasonable in terms of practice time 😅

Thank you for this video! One thing that's really helped me is, instead of using a sketchbook, I bought a ream of printer paper at walmart. I do tons of ellipses and circles on it, and just throw it in the trash when done. Takes the pressure off of doing them "well" in a sketchbook, and saves my sketchbook for things other than practice. Thanks again!

Yes great idea! It's about learning the movement through repetition until it becomes natural. Thanks for watching!
