I served in the Canadian Army as an Infantry soldier for 15 years and fought in Afghanistan. The similarities between this mans story and my own are scary.

When he said "sincerity does not excuse the person and justify the person doing reckless, irresponsible actions." the term "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" came to mind.
The one that came to my mind was 'the law of unforseen consequences',particularly when he talked about Afghanistan and CIA sponsorship
Russia invades Afghanistan,America support Muslims fighting against Russia with money/arms
Russia gets forced out,those extremist Muslims continue to fight against the new Afghanistan government,America supports the Afghanistan government against them with soldiers both soldiers and arms
The Afghanistan government gets overwhelmed and the american soldiers flee before they are killed by weapons that their government/the CIA supplied to fight the Russians
Seems rather ironic, but also very sad 😔,particularly when you hear what's happening to the ordinary people out there,most especially women

There was an Australian soldier who recently came home after the Afghan withdrawal who struggled with that, he said it was so difficult and scary for him to leave and he felt like he'd betrayed them and got suicidal

This series is so good. It also makes a great argument for humanity and rehabilitation. A lot of these people have a story, it's not so black-or-white where people are "just evil".
Exactly. I now watched former "rough guy", drug runner and now this. If nothing else, the series shows people CAN change. And very thoroughly.
Black and White is never the case. You should still strike down people who are an immediate threat. But that's just for pragmatic reasons. Everyone is a result of forces acting upon them. Muslim extremism is a part of Islam that was originally mistrusted by other muslims. It was born in a time of great crisis where the mongols had destroyed much and particular religious movements tried to make sense of it as a punishment from god. This logic has been reawakened due to the very unstable conditions of the middle east. If american christianity where in the same position. You'd be delusional if you think that wouldnt turn out just the same. With violent militant Westboro Baptist churches cropping up all over the place.

Everyone needs a higher being because humans are not capable of developing moral direction in the complete absence of structure. It might possibly happen as a random occurrence. But then that person will become the "God" of a society that lacks a God.

Its crazy how Ladbible went from completely irrelevant for a time to this. I was surprised to see videos like this pop up all of a sudden on my feed and find it was from them. This is incredible stuff and really an example of how you can use a platform to send a better message and educate people.

It’s so unique to hear it from someone who actually lived it and to hear it from his perspective. Quite like he said, I believe there’s always two sides to the story. I’m glad that he was able to have a change of heart and live the remainder of his life with a different viewpoint. That takes a lot of courage.
It's easy for us growing up relatively safe here in the USA to say we wouldn't buy into the radical Islam beliefs. But I think if we grew up with this sort of violence all around us. If we had, we would want to do something about it. I can see how easy it would be to fall into a group who have a misguided agenda.
You could argue Americans do fall into groups with misguided agenda despite the relative safety. Politics, cults, social justice, and others are rife with stuff like this. Perhaps less violent, but violent nonetheless. Like the Capital Riot, BLM and ANTIFA riots, gang violence, and so on

This was such a moving and impressive interview. I admire the courage and the internal integrity of this person. It is not at all easy to admit what he admits and to work on fixing it every single day, and helping other young people. Really impressive!

Alot of people are doubting his sincerity and are nitpicking what he has to say without actually listening to his overall message. He nvr tried to excuse the things he did and he is just explaining the reality of how he came to be radicalized and the reason why he moved away from it was because of the senseless violence against Muslims and non Muslims that he had to be a part of and to witness. Ultimately his is a sad story of disillusionment and its exploitation and regret.

I've met and talked to this man and as a fellow surgeon was impressed by his integrity and courage. I myself have been kidnapped and tortured twice during my medical missions.

Can't imagine what its like living in war-torn country, seeing your brother die, teaching awareness for 20 years without pay for it to mainly fall on deaf ears. Glad he saw the truth too many young ppl choose violence (of course a lot are forced). Hope he is at peace and more ppl can be like him 🙏

Really enjoyed this, there’s so much under the surface when it comes to the other side and what could spur people to go down a violent path. I remember being on deployment back in 2017 and seeing the destruction that all that fighting did to the communities there and I could definitely see a young person being angered by that which unfortunately could make them susceptible to influence. I’m glad he got out and is using his experience to make the world a little better. 🙏🏾

A few years ago I would never say ladbible is the CZcams channel to watch, but now I can.
This guy is very articulate and a great storyteller.
So insightful and how it seems that even the mistakes he confesses were initially motivated by a care for the community well-being. We obviously are waiting for better ideas to help the average person just trying to live. Community well-being is the basis for any successful society, this should be something that all people can agree on and work towards together.

Whilst the elite pick and choose who our "enemies" are, most normal people don't care for the politics. At our core, we are all the same - we all just want to live our lives in peace, in a safe environment, with our basic needs met.
I'm a Brit and, for as long as I can remember, Brits and Russians are supposed to have been enemies. But everyone I know was utterly horrified by the Beslan atrocity. Our hearts went out to you and we united with you in grief, horror, and outrage. There was no "us & them", just a global "us" mourning catastrophic and unnecessary loss.
Regardless of the press, the propaganda, or whichever power-hungry egomaniac is in charge of either country, when it comes to the average citizen, more unites us than divides us.
And when it comes to the heartbreaking events at Beslan, many of us around the world stand with you 💕

I'm not getting drawn into the debate you clearly want, that is unrelated to the thread you've posted on, but I will say this: the children of Beslan were not responsible for Russian policy in Chechnya. It's difficult for anyone to make a valid point or take the moral high ground when they've murdered children.

For all the ignorants, he is not a terrorist like you think he is. He is from the Mujahedeen that have fought the Soviets with the big support of the Western countries (especially USA and UK). Some of that Mujahedeen then turned into Taliban but not all of them. And some of them even tried to prevent the Taliban (like Shah Massoud).
How do you define a terrorist? What criteria, who produces the information that enables you to brand some people terrorists?
@@thamsanqakhoza7032 There is no objective definition so I just used the Western Goverments' perspective. They don't classify the organization that he went into as a terrorist organization
Its all relative, to the USSR mujahideen were terrorist to the west they were freedom fighters and now taliban is perceived as terrorists while some in Afghanistan see them as freedom fighters
@@user-yr2xr4fh5k yea this terrorism shit is mostly a concept which goverments use to illegitimize their enemies in the eyes of the international public. but i used western countries' definition for explaining purposes. if we make the definition as "every organization that kill civilians for its political, social or economical purposes is a terrorist organization" then most of the countries would be considered as terrorist :D
@@thamsanqakhoza7032 it's all very politicized and blurry, but terrorist generally refers to non-state actors which focus on civilian targets and public infrastructure in order to achieve their strategic means.
The only branch of the mujahedeen which you could make a proper case for being a terrorist organization was the Hezb-e Islami Gulbuddin due to their extensive attacks unto civilian targets during the Afghan Civil War and their relations with al-Qaeda.
