  • In this episode of ‘Minutes With’, we sat down with Aimen Dean, a former member of Al-Qaeda who turned his back on terrorism and joined the British Secret Service.
Aimen tells us how he ended up joining Al-Qaeda, how he met Osama Bin Laden and what made him turn his back on the organisation. His journey from terrorist to spy is an incredible one that led to Aimen being involved in the thwarting of a number of terror attacks.

Also, Al-Quida along with ISIS, and other terrorist organizations, believe any person that is American, or helps an American in anyway, is complicit with the atrocities that America does, therefor in their eyes, they aren’t innocent civilians, but actually a reason that those atrocities against their kind are committed.

This is an amazing interview. It's stories like these that help us understand the world, beyond ideologies and discourse of demagogues. Our assumptions are rarely correct. We are all influenced by our culture, surroundings, and experiences to the point that it's hard to keep track of our own biases. I appreciate channels like this that show us broadening perspectives. In the end, we realize that we are all people prone to making mistakes that lead to devastating consequences. We cannot judge someone based on just one metric; we are all characterized by incredibly complex sets of attributes, some of which are dark, sure, but the sum of which is always nuanced.

It’s really interesting to listen to this and at first think “who cares what you have to say. You’re a killer and a terrorist”. Then you hear why he joined, what he thought he was doing, etc. Then how he set out to leave immediately after it was apparent this was not what aligned with his goals nor “right” in any way. It took me a second to detach and think, Americans like me were your target, but you still had no intention of hurting the people you considered civilians and innocents. You have to take a step back, see it from a different view and really decide if you wouldn’t have taken the EXACT same steps in his position. Very interesting and very refreshing to look at this and see a different perspective.
