Futuristic Exoskeleton Suits Could Revolutionize Soldiers

  • The Exo suits seen in video games like Call of Duty might be a reality soon, but do they really hold up to their abilities, as seen in these video games?
Known as the Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit or TALOS for short, this experimental design was intended to give soldiers superhuman strength, endurance, and protection from enemy fire. Though the exact composites and components are still classified, this discontinued project by the US Army was a real-life Exo suit designed to fit around the whole contours of the body.
Using a combination of hydraulics and thermodynamics, the suit would enable troops to run faster for more extended periods while absorbing shock from incoming rounds and shrapnel. The suit would also provide immediate medical aid if the wearer were injured and gave the end-user vital signs such as pulse, heart rate, body temperature, and hydration levels.
Despite all of these high ambitions and promising tests, the US military ultimately scrapped the project in 2019 for undisclosed reasons.

@@bionawye9059 Nah, i don't think it's because of this. Infantry with exo-suits are still infantry, they're not impervious to small arms fire. What i think is the real reason, is that it's still very niche equipment which we will see only in small detachments in the future. It took years for protective vests to become economically and logistically sustainable. We need to have a much larger market, with much more competitors if exosuits are to be implemented for infantry as standard or even specialist issue. So far the price of one exosuit is around $100,000.00, it's no sustainable and would either cost the taxpayer tremendous amounts of money or the military will see other drawbacks from budget re-assignment.

Discontinued because it caused muscle imbalances that can lead to pretty bad joint pain like patella femoral pain symdrome. Wile an exoskeleton sounds great on paper our bodys muscles and tendons are meant to respond in unison with eachother. We curl our biscep and we extend our tricep if we had a machine so that our bicep muscle was assisted our biscep wouldnt develop properly leading to our tricep being stronger this would cause joing pain in your elbow same for your legs

You might be able to get away with an hour a day but 8 hours everyday for weeks is for sure enough to cause problems especially when it comes to your legs. If one side of you quad is too strong the other side atrophies this causes knee pain and is pretty common occurence with runners this exoskeleton would exasubate that by a considerable margin. A minor fix is physiotherapy however it can also lead to surguries on the knee scraping cartilidge also surguries to losen the tendons. Theres already been studies with exoskeletons causing these problems with civilian use its well documented and takes like a 2 second google search.

The biggest issue with these designs is that its basically strapped to your outer leg causing that part of your leg to atrophy however your inner leg muscle is still working albiet not as much this happening so much leads your legs developing improperly your inner leg will start to overcompensate to support your outer leg. This leads to bad knee pain, hip pain and lower back pain and can even results in needed surguries. Its better for a soldier to to walk with the weight your muscles develop in unison to be able to handle the weight.

Also if the exosuit gets damaged or malfunctions it could lead to incapacitation or severe injury. @@MizantropMan No, but that's a rare occassion. Not every military can land a perfect shot or afford rockets like that. However, NNEMPs are not expensive and do not require direct and/or accurate hits in order to disrupt the exosuits. Also, as I said, a slight change in military tactic or even bad weather can render them useless in combat, which doesn't occur with a chinook. It's also meant to be mass produced, rather than a quality build like a vehicle (Chinook), meaning it will have a higher chance of malfunction and damage. As you said, "one in a million hit". That's incredibly rare, but NNEMPs and flexible military tactics along with thunderstorms aren't rare at all.

    Just my opinion and thoughts
If it's not being used for "special purposes" it was probably discontinued after being tested by soldiers as often happens with "special military projects" the people in charge of the "high quality equipment" try putting to much into one piece of equipment making it
" not comfortable to use / not user friendly " which is actually very important for equipment meant for combat situations as a soldier having a issue with their gear could cause unnecessary damage & injuries and or deaths

So the suit essentially helps the body overcome perceived physical limitations. The muscles are still working with the suit on but now you don’t have to power yourself through sheer will to move that extra mile, the suit does the work and consequently makes the muscles stronger while increasing endurance.

Exo suits wont be in regular forces for a very very long time. But I can see them in the logistics part. Exo suits there dont need to be fancy at all, but they can allow one person to do a 4 people job. That takes a lot of stress from the logistics. Remember for one soldier there 1 and a half guy keeping him in the fight. An exo suit might be very valuable there and make room for money to go somewhere else

These would end up broken, missing their BII, and stuffed in tough boxes in the back of some connex for some poor LT to inventory every month. Meanwhile, the company XO would be pulling his hair out trying to reach the contractor to do a parts swap that never happens. This cycle would go on for 3-5 years until disposition instructions get cut for turn in and then everyone scrambles to make complete sets so they don't get charged in a FLIPL.

Instead of making an exo-skeleton with exposed hydraulics, make a full-blown exo-suit. Imagine the enemy thinking they they have the upper hand because they have only seen some foot soldiers only to find out that those were recon and that the main force is a bunch of metallic juggernauts armed with heavy caliber machine-guns
