***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 5 new videos every week! Tuesday through Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we transition from city dwellers to full time homesteaders!

This is why I don’t have cable tv anymore...I can get info to LIVE...plus be thoroughly entertained by channels like y’all’s! Anyone who gave this video a thumbs down must be a real NUT! 😆 Loved this video. Thanks Kevin and Sarah!!!
This video deserves to be in the CZcams hall of fame. LOVED IT.
This was hilarious! Thank you for the big belly laughs and for making my evening! I love the charm and the energy of your channel. What a beautiful family! God bless you all xoxo
how on earth did I miss this video? I laughed SO hard! You two are simply precious, priceless gifts from God. Love love love you both.
I totally agree!! Lol
Took me even longer!😂
Lol I know right CZcams algorithm or something 🙄😂
You had people all over the world laughing this morning! What an awesome thing to do.
Yep, still smiling here in Ireland :)
Oh my! I woke him up by laughing while watching you guys! Love it! And you guys eating them as fast as cracking them! Thank you you starting my day off right!
I'm so used to seeing the practical, teaching side of you guys that you took me off guard. I was laughing and guffawing so, that my husband wanted to know what I was watching! Thank you for starting my day off well 😄
I must admit, I laughed so hard during this video. I think I will have to watch it a second time. You two are really a great couple, knowledgeable, pleasant and overall entertaining. I absolutely love how you turn a challenging situation into a delightful, educational and entertaining video. Thanks again
So, I assume from the fact that you guys were eating the nuts as fast as you cracked them, that your daughters still have never tasted hickory nuts. Too bad. Looks like another reason not to attend the public school system to me. LOVE THE VIDEO!!! Still grinning from ear-to-ear. Thanks. IT WAS A GREAT WAY TO START MY MORNING!
I don’t know how you filmed that with a straight face. You guys crack me up 😂🤣 😂 My belly hurt so bad from laughing!!!! I haven’t laughed that hard in awhile. The music was perfect!! I will definitely be sharing this on Facebook. That was awesome...well done!!!
Sitting at the road side was my favorite
One thing no homestead should be without, a great sense of humor. Blessings Kevin and Sarah
What you have there is an arbor press. It is used to press small pins, bearings, or bushings.
Oh my word.....i just spit coffee outta my nose😂😂😂😂😂😂
Snort, me tooooo!
Lol
😁😂🤣
Me too girl..lol
Lisa Brunson me toooo 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love your channel! The hickory nut crack was hilarious. Your “nut cracker” is an arbor press. As a blacksmith i use one all the time. Very good use of the press since it seem they can be strong as steel sometimes. Lol
Thank you for your channel it is very nice to see your experience.
Today is 9/11/2020 and I just watched this video. I didn’t want to go on fb or anywhere else today but knew you would have a safe place to land after a long day at work and remembering those who lost their lives and are still suffering from the events that happened on this day. Your video had me laughing and laughing and I just want you to know how much I appreciate you. Truly. Thank you!
I seldom comment, but it was great. Thanks for the smiles. Best wishes Bob.
Well done !!
hahahaha such a clever video! Glad you cracked the case of the tough nut!
Hilarious! That was really fun. Thank you for the laugh. Much needed in these days. Blessings to you!
You two are hilarious. And believable. Your gardens are real gardens that can feed you and yours for a long time. I'm happy to find someone that knows the value of preserving food. Thank goodness for honest hardworking people like you
Once you finally got them cracking you were eating them faster than you cracked them lol, I almost pee’ed myself
So funny!! My co-worker and I laughed so hard we had tears. I was really looking forward to seeing the cars run over them.
I didn't think it was possible to love you anymore than I already do. I was wrong. This is stinkin funny. You guys are so creative.
Hilarious! You guys can be so funny! I remember Mom and Dad using nut picks on black walnuts that Dad had already smashed open. Their fingers would be stained dark brown for days. Black walnuts were used to dye fabric. Have a good weekend.
Well I'm still laughing. You guys are hilarious. One of the viewers made a suggestion....they said how about a trained squirrel to do the job. Hilarious !! 😂😂 I just had an incident with some pistachio nuts that refused to open. Had to go searching for my nutcracker to get them open (true story, this happened yesterday). That was tough, they really were very difficult to get open. Now you got lots of hickory nuts for cookies. Sara, how about a video making cookies using your hickory nuts. Especially for Christmas. I love your nutcracker, it's awesome. This video had me in stitches. 😄
need a big rock. an a hammer. put nut on rock. place nut on it side. hit it. nut open. lol
a mississippi girl
Haha!! So funny! You guys are the best! Aren’t antiques the best!! I will take something old that actually works and stands the test of time over some of the junk they produce today! Glad you got your nuts cracked! 💕 have a good weekend!
Meeee too. I go to flea markets and garage sales looking for household things that I need. I have been thru about 6-8 can openers, new manuel and electric, in the past year. They don't work very long. Sometimes the brand new manuel ones didn't work at all. The best 2 can openers I have had were manuel. One was those silver cheap ones from the 70's. I had it 20 years. The other was a pink vinyl coated KitchenAid from sometime in the 2000's.
Teena Pittman I hear ya! My husband thinks I’m nuts because I prefer the manual can opener!
Guys! I just had to thank you for the best laugh I've had in a long time! Ive seen the video for cracking the nuts you got from your neighbor when it originally came out but I just came across it again and I had to watch it! Still as hilarious as ever!!!!
Folks in my family have different kinds of nut trees. One method they use is to put the nuts in a gunny sack, tie it up, and throw it in the driveway, and run over it with a car. Don’t advise using the tractor unless you want hickory butter. The gunny sack is the most important equipment...it keeps all the nuts together. This method is extra handy with walnuts to separate them from the messy outer hull. Tip two...always use playtex gloves if you are handling black walnuts. They stain hands badly.
You guys are hilarious! All my fake eyelashes just fell out because I was crying with so much laughter. Who needs pay tv when you have hickory nuts 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you a great way to wake up. Funny stuff.
When i was a little boy. I would sit under a walnut tree with a rock, for hours at a time. Good memories.
This video gave me a great laugh! It's so nice to have good neighbors to help out when needed. I watched a few of your videos and got hooked right away. I have been catching up on older ones and watching all your new ones. Even though we are not homesteaders I do love having a garden and fresh herbs to cook with. I have learned quite a bit from your videos on what works best and what doesn't. Keep up the great videos! Love your family!
OK, that video was hysterical!!!!! The two of you standing by the road is picture perfect. And Kevin continuing to look down the road in the opposite direction of where any possible helpful vehicle would be driving was side splitting!
When we were kids, we used to take black walnuts to the bench vise to open them.
You guys are a couple of nuts 🤣
I found your channel recently and absolutely love both of you! You are excellent at teaching us what you know about gardening, food animals and cooking. I always get a kick out of Kevin's cooking and his crazy comments. Sarah is the best at everything! I am really grateful from what I have been learning from her. I'm 65 and I'm going to get myself a small farm, with my kids. You have given me such encouragement to pursue this lifelong dream. I am winding down for the night and thought I would watch your channel, I have a lot of videos to catch up on! This video with the hickory nuts was the one that popped up. Oh my!!!! Both of you are also comedians!!! I laughed so hard!!!😂😂😂 Thank you for who you are and for sharing the wonderful gift that God has given you. Now back to watching this video again. 😊
Reminds me of trying to crack open Black Walnuts on my Grandparents farm when I was a kid. South east Kansas. This was so funny, you guys are a hoot!
You two are a hoot! Laughed so hard this morning watching this! Thank you for the "sunshine" start to my day! Be blessed.....
Absolutely hilarious! I do recommend, for folks who don't have good luck at nearby antique stores, that you check out Lehman's Hardware Store online. They have a nice assortment of heavy duty nutcrackers. One is rather similar to the one you folks bought.
I have watched you guys for over two years, but just saw this video for the first time. It’s hilarious!!! Even more so knowing you two a little bit more. I howled laughing myself to tears. Love you both. I don’t even like nuts, but this is a classic.
Thank you!
Too funny! How did I miss that last year? As always, you guys are just so darned cute!
I think this might be my favorite video from you guys. Made me smile.
Soooo funny. Made me really laugh. Glad you got your nuts sorted! 😂🤣😁 Marty.
Hahahahahahaahahaha I'm on the floor laughing!!!! How did I miss this video!!!! Thanks for the morning laugh!
Thank you, I needed a get good laugh and this was what I needed. You guys are great!!! I just started watching about two weeks ago and have when back and started watching some of your older shows and have learnt a lot and really enjoy watching. Praying for your family to do great and too truly be blessed.
Sara and Kevin How can you not laugh while recording this video?? I love it !! I would be LMAO 😂 😂😂 I would love to see the bloopers...
I didn't post the above comment. Funny, but not me
Funny video! We used to place our black walnuts between two sheets of old plywood. Then, drive over them with the car. Surprisingly, still got loads of big pieces.
Great idea! Did you do this after drying and getting the hull off?
@@tscarberry5914 - best done while hulls are wet & mushy (will ruin the boards with black stains).
After that, we'd dry any nuts still in unbroken shells on tables of chicken wire.
Then, if shelling lots of those now dried nuts, revert to the two plywood boards and car trick.
If you intend to sell the meats or still-shelled ones, avoid any mashing technique while husk is on. Stained nuts are not salable (scares people who assume it's rot). Broken nuts also sell for less.
Holiday season is the best time to sell walnuts - tradition. Put a red ribbon on it and get even more per bag.
@@KauaiMike1000 Thank you!!!
You two are hilarious. I think you two are nuts 😂. Having toi much fun on the homestead.
That was a fun creative skit. Love the road side attempt, burst out laughing! Glad there was finally a solution. Enjoy those Hickory Nuts! 👍
First of all let me say I'm so impressed that you pronounced my hometown's name correctly. Most people don't. Also I believe it is C. E. Potter. God bless and take care.
Charles E Potter designed it. Also I believe the other ya'll found is called a King Kracker.
You all are so funny. I was laughing so loud and hard that it alarmed my dog.
I had to come back to this video to comment.. the other day we were heading out shopping and passed a lawn chair on the side of our road sitting by itself, I said to my husband, “oh they must of been cracking hickory nuts.” He hadn’t seen this video yet so I played it for him. We passed it again coming home and he said hickory nuts and busted out laughing, too funny. We love all your videos!
Back in the 50's dad and I would sit winter evenings with an anvil and hammer and crack hickory nuts at the kitchen table - Great fun.... Mom would then make the most delicious hickory nut cake - Thanks for sharing this - you brought back many fond memories from my childhood...
Thanks for the laugh this morning! You guys "crack" me up!
Yay!!! I've never tried a hickory nut. My grandpa used to harvest pecans, so gooood!!!
Thanks for the smiles.
I just got finished watching the hickery nut video and I laughed my head off you guys were hilarious in this I am so glad you got worked out you'll bring such joy to my days thank you kim
When I was young I would sit on my dad's lap and he had an anvil and a hammer and we would eat hickory for hours.
I use a bench vice and it works great for any nut!! crack them long ways then sideways and you can get the whole nut sometimes!
Oh childhood memories of old towels and hammers. Haven't tasted a hickory nut since then. This video is an absolute hoot. Thank you!
Big smiles on our face this morning. You two are cute.
I love it, Two nuts cracking nuts. lol
This really "cracked" me up. You guys are hilarious.
I had a good belly laugh watching this & I sincerely hope that hickory nuts aren't that difficult to crack. LOL!!! Thanks for the laughs today.
😄 😁 😄
They are
Oh my I am crying 😂😂😂. My grandmother used to crack out buckets of hickory nuts using a hammer and rock. She was a tough old lady and stubborn.
I call them "poor man's pecans". I use a hammer to crack mine. A friend brought some small and large nuts last week that I need to get after.
I watched then made my husband watch because you two crack me up 😂. We about died laughing while you sat in the chairs by the road 😂😂. Thanks for the great video! God bless 💕
Had not laugh like this for years good fun good lesson. God bless to all on the homestead
Hi Guys, just a note from other channels I have watched. They put a towel over the top to stop the flying shells. Hope that helps. Blessings!
I saw one video of a chap sitting in his garage with an anvil and hammer and he had success with it.
Those are super cute!!! Love those. Showing the one you bought I swear my grandfather had one something like that. It looked familiar but when you had to hang it off the edge of the table I know I seen him doing or using something similar on his hickory nuts and his walnuts.
I hollered laughing at y’all sitting by the road side. You looked like “proper hill folk!” Hahahahaha That’s what my “proper hill folk granny” literally would say. Hahahahaha 🤣🤣🤣 You’re just too stinkin cute! Love, hugs and blessings ~Lisa
You two are harlarious!! LMAO @ the beginning of this clip... Keep'em coming.
That's hilarious, great timing too because I just found out we have a Hickory tree on out new property.
You do know a regular old vise works just as well I am 30 years old and have been cracking black walnuts and hickory nuts with a vise since I was 7 yrs old
My grandfather drill a hole through a 2x4 put the nut in the hole and then hit it with a hammer...step on the board....now you know why the neighbor gave them away
Love your videos but this one made me laugh so much. thank you for starting my day laughing
You guys are so funny. This was a hilarious video. Thanks for the laughs, what a way to start my day. God bless ya'll.
I have one of these tools that belonged to my Grandfather and had no idea what it was. Thanks for showing it.
Hickory nuts are delicous!
we are having rain here in ala and expecting a rain and snow mix on mon or tuesday
When we bought our house (some 38 years ago) there was a Hickory tree on the property! Oh boy, I thought I've finally got a tree to harvest nuts on our property. Well it was pretty much like your video with all extraction attempts failing. I finally got the husk off and down to the inner nut shell, which was giving me so much trouble. I decided to put the nut into my 6" machinist vise and it actually slowed the vise down. I have never had a Hickory nut from our property. Great video, thumbs up.
Great humor, haha we used to run over walnuts in the drive way to get the husks off! I am way over 65 years old.
LOL!!! i loved the funny side of u guys..it was funny...
I laughed so much at this one. How did y'all keep a straight face?
We were gifted a bunch of black walnuts once. They were still green. My husband, having been brought up a literal hillbilly from here in the Ozarks poured them out in the drive way. We ran over them for few days to get all the green and then black husks off. Then we gathered them all up and spent a wonderful afternoon with the kids as Daddy laid them in a small knothole in one of the porch boards and used a hammer to whack them in pieces as the kids and I used the pickers to dig the meat out of the shells. Even now, years later, hubby gone and kids grown, I smile at the memories of that day and the smell of black walnuts in the sun.
Just caught this nutty gem today. Love you guys and your channel. I'm a recent senior and live in small town limits on about 1/3 acre so can't homestead but I've still learned some useful info. I especially love your gardening and canning videos. I really want to grow some loofas come spring 2020. Might try some canning too. Thanks for taking the time to come up with interesting and entertaining videos. You guys are the best!
Hilarious!! You guys are awesome ❤❤😂😂😜😜
Great fun. Thank you.
Haha...cute video! Love seeing your sense of humour coming through :) and glad you found a solution for your nut problem! I've never had hickory nuts up here in Canada but they must be worth it if you're going through all of this effort!! Interested to see what you''re going to do with them!
You people are crazy, lol. When I was a we lad, we picked up hickory nuts in the fall and my Dad would take a piece of iron and a hammer and crack the nuts. My Mom would then pick the meats out while watching the TV at night. They were used for Christmas fudge and cookies. This video brings back those memories, thanks. Now if you can send me about a pound of nut meat, that would make my day.
That was great! I bet you had fun putting this one together! LOL
That was toooooo funny. Great video. Love your channel. 20 thumbs up.
Omg, finally got to watch this. HILARIOUS is right. Love your sense of humor!
Goodness Kevin and Sarah! This year has been so hard, and I'm so thankful to you both that the tears currently streaming down my face are from laughter and joy. I really really needed this!! We've subscribed since forever ago, and we love you both. Laughter is the best medicine. ❤️
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 i was getting a huge kick out of those intros. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Crack them on the shortside
This is absolute proof! You are what you eat! Glad you cracked the nut code and God bless!
Oh my gosh! That is the most hilarious video I've seen in years! I laughed til I had tears! Thank you for the entertaining, and as usual, informative video.
Now lets see if you can crack them faster than you can eat them! lol
This video is by far your funniest one yet. It is good to see you taking time to have fun productively after such a blessed and plentiful harvest on your homestead. No wonder you are my favs. Enjoy all your hard work and each other. Btw. We used a hammer on a concrete surface and shattering everywhere was the norm. God bless your family.
2 funny. After you picked the nuts off the street, I half expected a car to finally drive down the road. And when Sarah had to duck and cover, I laughed so hard. You two are hilarious. Lol
Sarah likes the hickory nuts! You guys are too cute! Thank you for sharing! God bless
do you think squirrels will eat them?
With neighbours like that who need enemy's
