- This week marks the beginning of the end for our pigs. We've had a great time raising them but all things must end. We will butcher each of the one at a time over the next couple week. We are excited and nervous.

***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 5 new videos every week! Tuesday through Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we transition from city dwellers to full time homesteaders!

No matter how many times I experience it, and no matter how much I understand the need, I ache when the time comes to butcher the animals. But I think God made us that way. It shouldn't be easy to kill anything. Our gain comes at a price. You guys are awesome. These animals are very lucky to have become yours.
When God gave man dominion over the earth, He must have had you and Sarah in mind. Cyber hugs from an admiring friend,
PIGS aren't food... SEE BIBLE
No, pigs are not food... pork is! Who eats a pig? It also says that rabbits are not food when they ate them as a main protein source in ancient times...
Kudos to you, I wouldn’t be able to do it knowing I raised them.
I think if you just thank them for giving their lives for yours it makes a difference. It still makes me rather sad.
This is a sad and inspiring video. I truly admire both of you. Those pigs have been treated so well, it's a shame the meat so many of us purchase from the store aren't raised this way. Last year I purchased sausage from a co-worker who raises and processes his pigs. Best meat I've ever tasted.
Well said!
We had a mobile butcher come out to our property, that was very common in Oregon. Your brave, I loved my pigs so much as I know you do but it is still hard. Good job for being truly self sufficient!
Compassionate and responsible stewardship. Appreciated!
My 13 yr old grandson brought me a wild boar he harvested hunting 2 weeks ago... processed t myself...it was surprisingly easy! I've only done deer and caribou in the past. You'll do great...no worries! Congratulations on such a good job raising them!
You 2 are my shiny EYED homesteaders. Your joy, love, satisfaction and determination, shine through.
Great video and you should be quite proud of the very humane way you raise your livestock...i admire your compassion!
When I first heard this poem by Wendell Berry, read by Hand Hewn Farm many years ago on another channel, The Grass Fed Homestead, it truly brought it all into perspective for me. It’s warm, heart felt and absolutely appropriate. I hope it’s ok I’m sharing it here. I copied and pasted it from the authors site.
For the Hog Killing
Let them stand still for the bullet, and stare the shooter in the
eye,
let them die while the sound of the shot is in the air, let them die
as they fall,
let the jugular blood spring hot to the knife, let its freshet be full,
let this day begin again the change of hogs into people, not the
other way around,
for today we celebrate again our lives’ wedding with the world,
for by our hunger, by this provisioning, we renew the bond.
God Bless you and guide you and I pray everything goes as well as possible for your first solo pig harvest. I’m sure you’ll do wonderfully. Your hearts are most certainly always in the right place and I honestly believe that is what’s most important. Even if you don’t cut every piece perfectly it can still be used for something. Even if just turned to sausage it won’t be wasted. So just take a deep breath. We’re praying for you and are with you in spirit. God Bless you. ~Lisa
Lisa Booker I love that poem and that they read it before every harvest. It gives the proper reverence to the act, i think.
Very well spoken.
Wendell Berry can always bring me to tears! Thanks for sharing this.
The poem brought tears to my eyes. It was so beautiful and so appropriate! It almost sounded like a prayer.
Thank you for sharing it!
I'm been doing my own pig every year for 10 years it doesn't get any easier. You are one 100% Right way better for the hogs.
Feel proud....... You, gave them a wonderful Life. Love you guy's, and your healthy freezer, soon too be. Well done, Cheers, from Australia. Warming up here now...... !
It sounds like you guys have been planning and getting ready for this for a while! I bet it's going to go great! It sounds like you are getting all the rain we have been.
Thanks Al!
Ive been getting it too! 😊
Love you all and from reading comments here, you have shown to so many the respect that should be given to the animals that will feed the family through the winter months. Keep sharing your experiences, both good and not so pleasant. Again, I think that is why so many follow you here. You're real and not trying to show only what you want others to think. Homesteading and farming has ups and downs. All across this nation, I watch videos where there are issues with predators, strange weather patterns and each day there is a new problem that comes up. I deal with it here in Maine.
Love and blessings to your family,
Jim
Strangely, I find myself somewhat attached to your three little pigs, having watched them grow over the past several months. Having said that, I do admire the fact that you gave them a good life thus far and I respect that you're butchering your own meat. I could never do that myself, though. I guess I'm too much of a weakling when it comes to things like that. I'll will miss seeing them in your videos. They're interesting animals. Wishing you all the best!
artist45 I feel the same ♥️
I feel the same too.
Well said. Props to them. Props to the life they provided. Was tearing up knowing one will be gone the next time we see them....
I wish you peace tomorrow while you harvest your pigs. As tough as us country folks are, there's still some anxiety when doing this task.
Ive been watching 1000s of roots for a while now...you guys are some of my favorite homeasteaders!!
Hey Guys, I know tomorrow when not be easy, but if you’re quick they’ll never know it, and they know, so doing it there I think is more humane, you did it full cycle, your athe best mon & dad🙂🙏👍
Ah, butcher day is always the hardest! I've butchered chickens before, but not our sheep. We're doing that in the spring (we have a slow-growing heritage breed, so the lambs aren't big enough before winter). I just try to remember what my husband says: A good life and then one bad day. And I think you're really brave to be doing it yourselves!
Sarah, hun you look nerves. Youll be fine. We always say a prayer before we start in on any of the animals. As I told you earlier I know you both can do this. I have faith you you both. Its just so much more meat at one time. Prayers and strength coming yalls way. Youve got this😀
My homesteading experience for the past 30 days proves to me that not only a bobcat, but redtail hawks, skunks, possums, and racoons, are really into fresh poultry whether they are free ranging, in an enclosed yard or can get into their coop. Yes even hawks will take poultry in their coop. Rick in Pa mountains......Foxes included!!
Video made me sad, I know we knew this day was coming (don't even know the piggies lol) but watching them grow with you guys has been am amazing adventure and has me thinking maybe we could raise a pig or 2, Kevin looks like sorrow in your eyes which really got to me =( Thank the animals for the blessings they will be providing, and know it is all to feed your family, and another, God Bless y'all and thank you for being so considerate of the animal
I know , when i listen to Kevin he seems to really have a heart. It's like I really love these animals but, If we want to feed our family it needs to be done. Sorry, I am going to hear crap about this comment but, listening to Sarah not just about the pigs but, the rabbits too she seems cold at times.
@@micheleroberts908 You have to be cold to protect yourself, it hurts.
@@TheBluewaterBlonde just stop eating them. They want to live too. There is a REASON it hurts..
@@starstuff100 You miss the point. My father was a surgeon, he protected himself also -- that's why I recognized it in the beautiful Sarah.
Awww it is hard but you served them well and they will serve you well. Best they served a purpose in death vs. wasted. 🤗🤗🤗 I could tell you guys were slightly attached
Wow! What amazing testimony to pigs living like pigs. And they did such a good clean up job in the wooded area.
I really appreciate how compassionate you both are with your animals. Also it sounds like you guys will do great with the piggies. Can't wait to see some footage of the process. Praying all goes well.
I just want you guys to know who much I appreciate the effort you and ur family put into teaching us! I have been with u guys from the beginning and was one of ur first subs when ur channel was starting out
I love how the channel has grown and your videos have deleted
I am going to be starting a homestead over the next two years and I have found your videos to be so informative and valuable and I plan on applying much of what I have learned for you guys! Thanks!
I think it's awesome you guys are taking this on! Prayers for a successful and incident free harvest!
Plan hard, fight easy as they say. Good luck tomorrow. Your pigs look happy and content, you gave them a great life. The cycle of life goes on thanks to people like you doing the right thing being conscious of it and living every aspect of it. Blessings tomorrow.
Yes I have watched Scott rea and he explains and shows in such detail! It is bitter sweet raising them and dispatching them. It is wonderful in the end though, you know what has went into the meat and the animal was treated with care!! The best food anyone can ask for in my opinion! Happy Homesteading ~Shaina~
It's a hard thing to think about. I have followed along with you to learn about raising pigs and I want to honor you both for caring about your animals and working to give them a good life. Your pigs are happy and they are well cared for which is huge in terms of your ethical choices as their caretakers. I love what you are doing.
There might be some unclean cuts this year, but it's going to keep looking better every year. Knowledge is a journey that is worth the time!
You guys are great. I am sure you will do a wonderful job. I cant wait to see how it goes.keeping fingers crossed all goes well.
I know it's a mixed feeling, but they just continue giving by feeding the family! You've given them a good life!
It's so wonderful how much you care for the animals that you raise, the life you've given them. Unfortunately, I know that I would not be able to do what you are about to do tomorrow. I don't even think I could take it somewhere to be slaughtered.
Best of luck and we'll all be watching!
You guys are going to real busy with all the butchering of the pigs and chickens. We are getting things cleaned up for winter here in Washington. Hope things go well with the pigs in the next few days. Take care.
I love this channel and honestly, I'm in tears....I don't know I can do this. Blessings to you both and your family and all that you do and continue to do. I'm shaking.. best to you all.
Good luck guys. Take your time you will do great
Oh nice! The Smyth family, such sweet bunch. Thanks for posting today. Blessings, - Katrina
Since you've done other large animals, the actual ''dispatching'' not so new. But as this will be the first time to harvest the different cuts effectively, as with every learning curve, each time you'll see improvement. The God-created CYCLE OF LIFE is awesome to see.
Butchering pigs and goats growing up was always hard for me to deal with emotionally. It felt like loosing a family member. But mostly I hate the skinning part. It's all for a great cause
My city girl wife freaked out when she first came to our farm and Dad got her to help with butchering some sheep.
I am really appreciating your honesty...and your efforts to be as humane as possible...you are so right about the stress to the animal when they are loaded to go to the butcher.
I like the Scott Rhea project and Lumnah Acres -- both have great videos. I highly recommend both as you did. Looking forward to your pig harvest video. Hope all goes well with it. By the time you harvest 3 pigs you will have reached expert level!!!
thank you for letting us know...i cant handle the slaughter and i so appreciate your sensativity to all by not having a pic of a slaughtered pig up front. God bless and c u soon.
You looked and sounded sad but you gave them a good life.
Oh, I'm way too squeamish to ever be able to do something like this, but I think that how you raised them and how you plan on processing them is really amazing. Pigs are such sensitive creatures, and I'm sure that taking out the stress of transportation for the butchering is going to make a difference. I hope everything goes well for all of you tomorrow, and I also hope we'll get to see Kevin make some bacon later on!
Love Scott Rea's videos, a good old school butcher. Also love the Hand hewn farm guys for their pig expertise.
I thought I recognized those kids 🤗 I love 1000 of roots they are so sweet. I didn’t know they lived so close to you guys. Im sorry Kevin I know it’s sad but your right they had a good life ❤️
Thanks for sharing! I enjoy your videos and the family you had visiting videos and also Lumnah acres ( I spelled it wrong) looking forward to the next batch of piglets!
I have to say i love this channel and will always watch. One thing about homesteading is that each homestead does what they feel they need to care for their family. Although some may not always agree with industrial livestock harvesting methods, like myself. I can tell that your care for this animal was amazing and offered them a wonderful life. Your connection to ensuring that great care is taken and understanding of life and sacrifice the animal had given for your family is understood. Although this is not for me and mine....i respect your decision and admire your strength. thank you for posting.
I was following you more than a year ago something happened to my CZcams account so lost y'all now that I have found you again I am very proud of the accomplishments that y'all have made anyway keep up the good work 👌 y'all be safe
I tried to be tough, but it still got to me and I bawled my eyes out. I have farming roots and currently live on 25 acres, it am still too sooky to grow my own meat. Love your channel, many thanks.
This video makes me want to become a vegetarian....That's why I could never homestead. I can't imagine doing this work myself after raising them...
Scott Rea Rocks!!!!
Good luck you guys! I might could do it but, it would definitely be through a river of tears! I'm just to "soft" when it comes to animals I raise. Thank God for friends, or if starve! Lol.
God speed and God bless!
Again I want to say "thank you" for sharing views of your garden canning products....they are beautiful!
I have been butchering hogs since i was a kid. Dont fear its not as bad as u think. With the exception of hair scapeing! Lol. I always hated that but still just get your temp right and it will make that fairly easy. Good luck guys, cant wait to see how it turns out. Like anything it gets easier as u do it.
You can do it ❤️the first time is definitely hard, but so rewarding knowing that you have given them a good life, and knowing that you did the best you could raising them. You raised them for this purpose. Good luck 🙏 I have helped my husband butcher and process a lot of livestock and wild game over the last several years all on our own.
The care and respect you show for your animals is phenomenal. I love your channel on so many levels (I’m a newer subscriber so I’m going back and watching previous videos now). Keep up the amazing work - and thank you so much for sharing. God bless.
Very excited for you guys. I know it is sad, but 3 years is a long time without pork! I wish you guys the best of luck!
Processing a pig is a big task. I'm sure yall will do a great job with it. Good luck.
I know y’all are nervous but I know y’all will do everything in the most respectful humane way. I don’t know if I can watch the butchering but I’ll try. I know I sound like a wimp and I guess I am. Good luck and I want to thank your pigs for their entertainment over the months. Love from NC.
I could see a difference when you guys were talking about it. At first I said yay then I got sad.
I have loved learning so much from you guys. We are looking at actually doing an urban homestead, instead of waiting. Due to our situation it will be rabbits only for animals and our garden of course.
Good for you guys!!! You have more guts than I do, we took our pigs in to be butchered. We got a total of 472 lbs. (hanging weight) of meat for the 2 pigs. We were really pleased and can't wait to do it again next year!
Good luck on your first pig butchering. Sure is gonna taste good.
Aww, you all are such a nice family. I'm sure it's hard to do. Love your channel
Great , we will be doing ours when it gets cold enough here in Texas . Y'all do great !
I pray it goes well
Glad the pig project is going so well. I was one of those that thought they'd get out of the electric fence ... glad I was wrong. Best wishes that all goes well. God bless
Culling and harvesting will be the hardest part of homesteading for me. I understand the importance and neccessity of both but it will still be the most difficult thing I do.
Look forward to the harvest! 👏🏻
Good luck tomorrow. I'm positive you will be great at it 💚
You keep your place so clean and organized.
saw your lovely family through the Smith family, i am so happy to see another family sticking together and getting back to the basics, looking forward to watching your family.
I sure hope you catch that bobcat creeping around. We get so many animals, bugs and pests here in florida along with all to common fungal diseases in the garden because of our excessive heat, humidity, & rainy most of the year.
That is going to be a tough day but it's all about eating right and being closer to your food. Good luck guys. I'm sure you'll do great.
All the best to you both on butchering! It's never easy but through your videos I've seen that you are compassionate and have a generous care for your animals. I to worry when it's processing time.
The music made me even sadder. I like the pigs. Hope it goes well tomorrow.
Good luck tomorrow!!
ohh my 1000's of roots great family and lots of love add traditions and makes great company hugsssssssss from Ontario Canada
Sorry to hear about your quail. I’m looking forward to your next videos about your pigs.
I think your sadness and the same time gratitude toward the pigs is coming over. Good luck in all.
In reference to knife sharpeners, I have to share a sharpener I purchased 18 months ago called AnySharp. It’s billed as The Worlds Best Knife Sharpener and I have to say it truly is. I have even seen professional chefs on CZcams testing and using them daily. I would not be without one now and they are not at all expensive.
Yes - you guys got this! Take care.
Two of my favorite CZcams families together :-).
As sad as you feel, you are very respectful of their lives buy not wasting anything on them! Being grateful for their sacrifice is a good example for your girls too!
So much fun Homesteading community stuffs in this one. 1000's Of Roots visiting, Kevin talking about Al from Lumnah Acres.........idk, just made me happy. I love how y'all seem to have such a great community amongst yourselves :)
Guineas: We bought 6 French Pearls in late winter. After we let them out with the chickens, they stayed around for maybe 2 weeks. 4 just disappeared, never to be seen again. I suspect they roamed too far and coyotes got them. The other two roamed the neighboring field, and an a**-hole on a tractor ran over them with a bush hog. He said "well, they wouldn't get out of the way". So mad!
Anyway, we got 3 more (Lavendar Guineas), and let them out about a month ago. So far, they hang with the chickens and seem content to be close to the coop. Even if we lose them, we'll get them again and again until some of them stay! They're loud and stupid, but funny and hungry for bugs. We love them! Try again; don't give up!!
Good morning 👍
I wish I could be there to help you. We always butchered our own pigs for many years.
I appreciate what you do. You treat your animals with respect. Just think, not a lot of animals get the same treatment.
You guys are amazing, you will do great! God bless you for all you do!🙏🏼💞
Good luck, It sounds like you are ready to tackle it.
I understand the emotions ,BTDT, with my brothers and sisters. Tis the season!!!!! good luck !!!!
So great seeing you all together. Good luck on your butchering 👍
I grew up raising and eating the animals we raised. It takes special people to be able to raise then harvest your own meat. We don't trust anyone else with this job because we want to make sure our animals were raised and harvested humanely. My heart will be with you when you harvest your first hog.
I hope you share the process, we are just starting with certain animals as well. Have a blessed evening 😊
Just subscribed! You have inspired us to get rabbits next spring! Great video!
That is awesome y’all are doing it yourself, I know it’s hard but I also know that’s what they are raised for.
Great to see kips family over some of my favorite people together ❤️
Goodluck tomorrow the pigs are my favorite animals
So nice that you and 1000's of roots family were able to meet! They will be great friends with you.looking forward to seeing you processes your pig's Al at Lumna acers just did two pig's on CZcams this week also.
I was in FFA in high-school. Raised 🐖 ,cow 🐄 and lambs. I had the honor to see them butcher .
