Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

I was shocked at the wind chills people were getting. I'm happy the girls were their to help out. Such a wonderful family. The girls never got sick? I am always in awe of how animals can withstand those temperatures! DONT DO TOO MUCH TOO SOON!! I'm sure you don't want a relapse of that

You guys probably already know this, but after the flu, you have to take it a little easy, so that if it is possible for you to still get a little help, it us probably the right thing to accept that help. If you overdo, it can hurt your heart (through rheumatic fever, if I'm remembering right).
Whenever I hear about a married couple with the flu, together, I remember my grandparents, who spent their honeymoon with the Spanish influenza. They didn't' feel right at the wedding, and then this. My grandmother said that the house they rented had a bed in opposite corners of the room, in which one of them took one bed, the other took the other, and whoever was feeling less horrible waited on the one feeling worse. I've got to say, I'm impressed with my grandfather about that! Being as old fashioned as he was about men's and women's roles, the thought of him taking care of his sick, new wife, while he, himself, was sick with this deadly flu, was an unexpected and gratifying surprise. But he wasn't so selfish that he wouldn't take care of his bride with the Spanish influenza! Just the same, it's an odd picture from him. Good for my granddaddy!

Good for them! My Dad came down with influenza on my parent's honeymoon. It wasn't as serious as Spanish influenza, but he was pretty miserable and he's never been the best patient! LOL! My Mum spent her time either looking after him or running out to the chemist in the pouring rain (Scotland in October) to get him more medicine!

I am in East Tennessee and lost my entire greenhouse full of plants like lettuce, peas, cherry tomatoes, radishes, etc. I had a little space heater going, but it couldn't keep up with the low temperatures we had here. I am sorry to hear you got sick. We were exposed to covid but thank the Lord, we did not get sick. We are hoping 2023 is a better year for everyone. Last summer was too hot and we all lost our garden produce then as well. Covid nearly took my husband, but he survived. Now we thank the Lord for each day we wake up to a new start for life. Each day is a new chance to do His will. We must be in His plans for a while longer. Take care and Happy New Year. Annie

    GH grower tips:
    1) Break the thermal barrier. Anything on the ground is subject to soil temperature. & the 2nd law of thermal dynamics.
    2) Bottom heat: just like humans, if your feet are cold, so is the root zone. Plants with a warm root zone can withstand colder ambient air temperatures. The heat will then gravitate to the plant canopy.
    3) Lower plant cover: hold the heat down as close to the plant canopy as possible.
    4) Heavy plant cover: think comforters from the thrift store. We use these in conjunction with additional 6 mil plastic on one bench. The other bench was covered with 6 mil & double 3oz. frost blanket.
Our 450 buttercrunch lettuce + 300 cabbage seedlings survived a low of 2*/-16 windchill. We kept everything covered for just short of 5 days, heated with nothing but 3 separate strings of 72w halogen lightbulbs (12 bulbs total).

Oh my gosh guys! If I didn’t know better I would think this video was made about my past week+ experience! Lol I watched your video on buttoning up and I was doing the same for my chickens when a Mac truck came by and hit me and my husband. Your video paralleled our experience. We didn’t have any Christmas, sick in bed. My daughter still at home exchanged gifts. All else had to be cancelled. Having five kids and grandkids there’s traditions and welp not this year. Yesterday was my first day feeling like I was going to survive this and I was able to run to town. My husband still mending with a deeper cough than I had. Yep we got out of bed into the -8 with windchills of -35-40 degrees because we had to feed and water animals. Was tough, but the movement I believe saved me from inactivity and helping me breathe deeper (did have a fleece face shield on to prevent lung freeze while I was out in the frigid air) I’m happy to report the chickens survived!
Glad you two are on the mend to full recovery! Ps get yourself a SQuip. Himalayan Salt Inhaler it is what keep me breathing and drying the lungs of excess fluid not to mention preventing secondary bacteria from breeding in the lungs. It’s a must have for anyone with lung issues due to irritation or illness. Makes for quick free breathing and healing. Think of salt caves for lung therapy overseas, right in your own home. Quick and effective! I also diffused sage essential oil which further encapsulates fluid in the lungs into the oil droplets, like a magnet for excess lung fluid, this is great for aiding in recovery of lung illness.

Healing wishes from our farm in New Hampshire. We know first hand, how challenging it can be to find last minute help on a large farm. The flu has hit our state hard. We decided not to leave the farm. Sadly every neighbor we knew, who went out, either caught the flu or a severe cold. Our new farm helper came down with covid, after my brother-in-law broke his ankle.. He was off his feet for weeks. We have been struggling to get the cattle to the barn before snow. They were out in the back 40. Our local police helped us, by stopping traffic, so we could get the cows & calves across the secondary highway. We were so grateful. I was sick during Christmas too. Symptoms of a cold on Thursday, shivering at night, tested positive Friday. Took Mucinex, Tylenol, and plenty of fluids. Fortunately, the virus was mild but had to isolate. About 20 years ago we sold our dairy cattle so we didn’t have to milk or feed cows twice a day. During last week’s blizzard here in Michigan, a snowplow and grater got stuck on our road. Years ago my husband used the tractor and snow blower to clear our road so the milk truck could come in and pick up our milk. Hubby is retired but we enjoy watching the farming/homestead channels.

Normally we get enough lettuce(like fancy colored lettuces that cost $5 for 4 tiny heads in the market) each month to make it worth running. At least one big meal a week with salad but constantly picking a few leaves for sandwiches or tacos.
My son in law loves Korean BBQ lettuce wraps so he gets a couple whole heads when he volunteered to cook for his mom in law lol.

Too bad...I went through similar story that you two did. Felt sick on Christmas, but now feel much better! Thank God!! My greens are goners! I am used to eating salads for lunch, too! That cold spell was terrible...never felt it that cold before! My daughter gave me an electric wrap. I definitely used it! I’m in Oklahoma.

Hello Sarah and Kevin. I am so sorry to hear you were so unwell. Too sick for Christmas, that's not a nice thing. I'm glad you were able to keep the animals well. What a loss you had with the lettuce. I saw them only a week or so ago; they were so healthy. What a dreadfully cold period. Good luck with your new starts.Sending thoughts for continued healing.

My niece now hosts our big family Christmas and her whole bunch caught that flu. We're reschedule for this Friday. My kiddos came on Monday and it was wonderful to see my great granddaughter open her gifts and spend time with her. I found out yesterday that I have a sinus infection so I'm on medicine now. Praying you feel better real soon! Texas Deb ❤️🙏😁

@@godsgreenacreshomestead708 Learned a long time ago that stressing over something that hasn't happened does no one any good. 'Ya can only do due diligence in selecting the doctor, the facility, and making a risk-benefit decision. Beyond that, it is beyond anyone but the medical teams' hands. Better to have prayers for the team and requests for positive outcomes with a world view that all the milestones WILL be met; there is NO room for doubt or fear 'cause they only distract from meeting milestones. - Thank you for your comment.

I am so sorry you both were sick. There are viruses out there now that are extremely virulent and "like I got hit by a train" is how they start. However, I am extremely grateful to God that He sustained you and you are both healing. In October of this year I caught a variant virus that kept me in bed for a month. I recovered thank God, but an after effect is that I lost about half of my hair. I read that for women, sometimes a side effect after healing is hair loss. I just spent 4 years growing out my hair from decades of using hair dye. It was getting longer and is a pretty silver color. So.... now, as the hair grows back, I have the blessing of practicing patience again. At 75 I am getting better at it haha. Sending you love and hugs from Italy. I hope your rescheduled Christmas with family is a great blessing.

Yes, we delayed Christmas too...out of three grandkids one had Influenza A, another had stomach flu throwing up for 2 days, and the other we had to take 120 miles in -37 weather (that's not a windchill temp) to get his tonsils/adnoids out (we live in Montana). I picked up the stomach flu from the grandkiddo and we finally had Christmas last night. It'll be a Christmas we remember for a long time. I love that your kids helped you take care of the animals...our kids would have done the same. God bless!

We postponed our Christmas due to those two factors, plus blowing snow closed many roads and we were in a red travel alert for 3 days. We all managed to stay well, though.
