This movie is absolutely brilliant and a thoughtful examination of what exactly does friendship mean, where exactly are the appropriate boundaries for it, and how far are some people willing to go to obtain it? One of my favorite quotes from The Polar Express is when Santa says "there's no greater gift than friendship", which is true in my opinion. This movie takes that line to the extreme absurd deep end but is still very relatable if you've ever had somebody enter your life who desperately wanted to be your friend, but you didn't feel like reciprocating at the time - especially if their actions set off red flags for you.

VERY underrated movie. I remember being one of the few people that liked ‘The Cable Guy’ back in 1996. If I recall, there was a segment of Jim Carrey fans that didn’t want to see him play a bad guy in a comedy. They wanted more physical humor like Ace, Dumb & Dumber, and The Mask.
I actually think The Cable Guy underperforming ruined Carrey’s comedy career as he never explored that dark side again. He went to safe comedies like Liar Liar or pure drama in the 00’s. What’s ironic is The Cable Guy is his last great comedy for me. The problem is he was a Star by then so he had to play to the masses who didn’t like that character after that.

If it was the early 2000s, Ben Stiller may've played Broderick's part and Jack Black may've played Carrey's part, since Black became alot less serious and more goofy by then, with roles like Shallow Hal, Orange County, and School of Rock, which all came out between 2000 and 2004. Cable Guy came out in 1996 and Jack Black hadn't found his comedy style yet, and was much more serious in this movie than in those later movies.

I like the movies that are over the top and at the same time bring something different to the table.
Plus the Internet theme man, that was a OMEN!

My favorite scene in the movie CABLE GUY.
the scene where Matthew Broderick was in jail and Jim Carrey's character show up pretending to be a lawyer.
And put his nipples on the glass between them and says kiss it.
    And says oh Billy.
It's a homage to the movie MIDNIGHT RUN.

This film was one tv not that long ago, and haven't seen it since it came out. I have to admit it was difficult getting through a second this many years later.

My wife and I love this movie, we watch it all the freaking time. There was a 4 to 6 month period about 2 years ago when we probably watched this movie almost every fucking day. And we still throw it on once a week probably. The magnificent 7, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, The Cable Guy, Trainspotting, & a couple others. TCG rlly holds up for an early 90's film. And looking back at his entire career, Jim Carrey has a really broad scope of genres and styles he has starred in. Hes a very impressive thespian and I truly appreciate his dedication to his body of work.
He also has one hell of a BEARD nowadays.. LoL

The best movie I saw twice opening weekend! Loved it! Was shocked over the following week that others hated it, I understood why after more thought, it's not for everyone especially when it came out. It's a different Carrey beast. Expectations were "subverted", nah, it just was a different tone of comedy to what some of my school friends were hyped for. Funny, though, the "brand" of humour to this one has allowed it to age better than some other comedies from the same year or two.

I still think The Mask holds up quite well today. While performances in Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine and Man on the Moon may be better performances from Carrey, The Mask I think is Jim Carrey at his best in a comedy film. Has the right amount of humor of Carrey that’s both wacky cartoon humor and not so wacky cartoon humor. The Mask character can go a bit dark at times, like making a real Tommy Gun out of a balloon and firing it at the gang in the alley, among other moments in the film, some of which don’t necessarily pertaining to The Mask character. I think it’s a good balance of the two. The Cable Guy would probably be a close second as he’s a bit cartoony in the beginning, yet becomes darker as the film goes. Cable Guy is a fantastic film that has earned a lot more praise over the years, which is good since it was never a bad film. It’s just people weren’t expecting Jim Carrey to be in a film that wasn’t as goofy or cartoony at that time.

I remember the marketing for The Cable Guy, and Jim Carrey was right. They marketed it completely the wrong way. That was why it kinda low-key bombed. I watched The Cable Guy for the first time about two years after it came out. I LOVED it! It's a great dark comedy.

unless you weren't alive in the 90's, pretty sure most people saw this. Having said this, I hated the Cable Guy. I think it's kind of unfair to assume everyone was "afraid" of Jim Carrey or didn't understand it. It's cool if some people like it, but it's clear many people just didn't enjoy the film.
