My high school biology teacher had us watch this in class, because the letters GATTACA are referencing DNA.
Same with my highschool teacher, and it was weird being the only student who seemed to like it in my class. It was like it was "uncool" to have enjoyed the movie a little bit i guess.
Same...
I had two of my biology teachers over the years show this in class. In Germany.
and they had the hots for Ethan Hawke i bet, women are a dimented lot who are swayed by this.
Hah same!
Gattaca is probably my favorite movie of all time. The ending is so bittersweet. The soundtrack is just amazing also.
If that's your opinion, try watching Blade Runner.
Thank you. The soundtrack just is so moving and perfect. I feel like this movie separates those of us who feel - from those of us who don't. It is sublime.
My science teacher introduced it to me.
@@decannerlin5950 That’s an awesome science teacher right there
@@decannerlin5950 wow thats crazy my science teacher also played this movie for my class n I remember most people didnt even payed attention but I was so interested in the movie i finished it at home after
It is one of the best movie in the history of cinema.
Yes. (And I love In Time as well. Similar, and from the creators of Gattaca.)

It was ... and then Andrew Niccol wrote and directed The Host and I questioned if this was a fluke

Nope Kubrick "The eagle has landed " must be the best one ,never got an Oscar thou .?
I didn't realise this film did so poorly in theatres. I recall seeing it during it's original release, and have been a huge fan ever since.
Seen it when I was a kid and it was alright... and watched it again 2 years ago and it got brought up in my top 10. The one scene where Jude law explains why he is helping him and or doesn't mind is what made this entire movie even better. You have no idea until you have tried really hard to do something in life and failed.. then remember this scene. Overall good story. I have not yet seen this video, but I agree with the title :) and doing well at the theaters means Nothing.
I really hated this movie. It was a typical product of Hollywood, with a Hollywood snowflake morality - if a person wants to do something, and is utterly unqualified to do so, they can just do it anyway regardless of how many other lives they puts at risk. Nothing else matters but your own petty passions and personal vanity. You have no responsibilities to anyone else, because only you matter. No wonder Gore Vidal was in it.
Same here. Saw it when it first came out. Thought it was a big time movie lol
@@jonnylaser85 I know. I thought Seven Year in Tibet was a decent film too.
@Patrick Whelpley I tend to agree with you but Children of Men applied the propaganda with a trowel. Its argument that Europeans are dying out by having few children was hardly subtle.
The swimming scene in this movie always stuck out to me. Might not matter how strong you are, but rather the effort you're willing to put forward in what you believe.
"That's the difference between you and me! I never saved anything for the swim back!"
My favorite cousin inferred that he thought the swimming scene was gay and told me Gattaca was the only movie he ever walked out on. Needless to say he ceased to be my favorite cousin on the spot. Later he became a cop - figures. What a dipshit.
octagonproplex explains it all lol he never had a dream
@@Geronimo_Jehoshaphat Yup. Sounds like an idiot.
To me, the swimming scenes mean that you can achieve greatness if you risk EVERYTHING and don't hold anything back as a safety buffer.
"I never saved anything for the swim back"
Great line!
I've heard this phrase exactly at the time I really had no way to swim back. This made Gattaca one of two movies that changed my life.
@@LukeVilent what's the second movie that changed your life?
@@joshau2346 Interstellar.
Brilliant line
This movie played a part in changing my life. I went from homeless to owning 24% of a small corporation I help built. And it only took me 3.5 years. I quadrupled my income within 2 years from the start of my job. No matter how ordinary you think you are, there is always a different version of you inside waiting to be unleashed. You have more magic within than you will ever realize.
Just like the protagonist but they didn't give him a chance. He had to forge his own path. Which is something I respect. I'm also happy for you for turning your life around.
Anh Truong that is so inspiring. ❤️
So how come people in life still fall on their faces after struggling their whole lives? Its ALWAYS their own fault isn't it? Don't push this bootstraps thing TOO far. This IS after all, a movie. Moviemaking is still a business, however threadbare. The moral of the movie is PAY ATTENTION to our own loss of humanity cause we pretty much throw it away.. when Big Brother wants us to.

Me thinking about my science teacher last month putting this movie on, and it becoming one of my all time favourite movies
I'll never get enough of this movie. It unlocks something in me that I never thought existed. It makes me feel like no other movie does.
A desire to reach for the impossible? A quest for the stars? Or did you get to live vicariously through the genetic elite just to be happy to find yourself back in your invalid self?
There are so many layers to this movie. Sibling rivalry. Classism. Imposter syndrome. Toxic perfectionism. Elitism. It's relatable on so many levels. It really is one of the great underrated movies of all time. And there are so many clever insertions. For example, "valids" and "in-valids"... as in invalid... a person with a handicap. The spiral stairs that look like a double helix. Even the title, Gattaca, is spelled with the 4 letters in the base pairs of DNA, AGTC.
Joke's on you this movie was played in every high school science class I took in the early 2000s.
Same for me.
I only know about this movie because a biology teacher suggested for the class to watch. I was the only who watched.
Saves the teachers from teaching, which most American teachers can barely do.
philosophy in 2017 for me
I literally watched it for Filmmaking last week
"Nobody exceeds his potential" ... Gore Vidal's performance in this was also noteworthy. This entire movie was like a clinic for superb acting.
"You're going to miss your flight, Vincent" still has me tear-up every time I watch that scene.
Even the movie's title was genius.
How so?

This is my favorite movie of all time, there are so many life lessons: never let people dictate your future, keep trying and trying and eventually you’ll make it, sometimes what seems like the impossible is the only way forward. Love comes unexpectedly in mysterious ways, so many more subtle lessons its my all time favorite
I remember when we first got satellite TV at my parent´s, just because of this movie. I must have watched it 8 times that summer, catching all the reruns, and I think I still could cite good chunks of it from memory. It is one heck of a movie. Let´s see:
_"For being someone who was never made for this world, I must confess I am suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say that every atom of our body was once part of a star. Maybe I´m not leaving. Maybe I´m just going home."_
Yup, still got it. And that soundtrack. Still gives me the chills.
It's such a beaitiful saying. I feel like I can relate to it.
This series is turning into a who's who of some of my favorite movies.
Thank you! We aim to please. Feel free to post your suggestions for future entries in our COMMENTS section.
Can we get Dark City some love?
@@mdwesquire When I went to see Dark City at the cinema, I was a few minutes late so I missed the opening scene. I came in as he was waking up in the apartment, saving the goldfish etc. The funny thing was, being late made the whole thing a much better movie for me.
Me to.
How cool is it to be in a film that was not a “box office” success but is still watched, loved, discovered and re-discovered again and again. Those actors will be old and infirm one day, and will still get asked about this film by interviewers that love the film....
Weirdly enough, I actually loved this movie. It has a pretty realistic concept that can happen in real life.

Powerful stuff
This is a friend's favorite movie. It always surprises when people say they have never seen it.
I saw this movie in my AP Biology class at the end of the school year. I didn’t appreciate it at the time, but glad other people are finding it. We need more films like this one.
Hey, I saw it in my sophomore bio class as well! It didn't really hit home for me but it was aight.
Same, saw mine during year 9 English. Pretty cool 😎
@@GurtMcDirt Lot of the symbolism and meaning would usually be lost for a HS sophomore. Lots of details, such as the movies title, which goes unnoticed. Not a masterpiece movie by any means but its 100% better than "aight"
just finished it today 9/15/23 during bio 30 lol
There is no gene for the human spirit.
Well said :)
One of the only movies quotes I remembered
I saw this film like 500 times, twice at the theater when it first came out in '97 or '98. (theater was kinda empty that's true) At that time I just moved back to my hometown after boarding school then university and landed my first job. As I was away for several years, lots of people I knew were no longer there. So I spent lots of lonesome weeknights at the theater after work. A lot of cool movies came out during those few years time: Soldier (Kirk Russell) Jerry Maguire, Fight Club, 5th Element, Gattaca, Starship Troopers, American History X, Contact and Mathilda amongst few others. Fell in love with Gattaca immediately and went back to watch it again. Such an inspiration yet heartbreaking film about the human spirit. I also really loved the nior tone and sound of the film. Break out role for Jude Law, who kinda stole the film. Ethan and Uma also acted so well. However, the best role of all in the film was Xander Berkeley. I cried a little and you'd too. One of my all time favourite film.
The doctor who did his tests? Yeah I liked him too, that was a great little sub-plot.
I also feel a lot of good movies came out back then. I was just a kid though. Now a days it's hard to find a well thought out movie, although there are a lot of excellent series, they just don't invest in to movies and movie stars like they did before.
I had a crush on Jude Law too
"There is more alcohol in this piss than there is piss!"
Found this gem at the library when I was younger on VHS, I watched anything at that age lol.
"I never save anything for the way back!" I try to live by this.
me too ! I thought I was the only one !
Real shit go all out!!!
This movie is a masterclass in production design and storytelling.
"I never saved anything for the swim back"
that saying in that scene has always given me goosebumps. Even when i first saw it in the theater.
it remains one of my favourite films of all time
I'd say it's a science-fiction cult classic for sure I seen it many many times. Great movie!
Some 15 years later NASA scientist voted it the best science fiction film ever made. I concur.
One of my all-time faves ever; it's timeless. I have to agree that in this day and age, films like this wouldn't end up be made most likely.
This movie is such a masterpiece

Says Jude Law in his USA breakout role😁.
From day one, Gattaca placed among my favorite movies of all time.
octagonproplex if you have a dream it really is a powerful movie
One of my all time favorite movies! So beautifully made in every aspect of the process! There’s also no other movie I relate to more, as I’ve struggled with a chronic illness for most of my life and have been turned away from various opportunities because of it.
I'm sorry for that but I am sure you will find your place.
This movie changed my life. I saw it as a kid and it really inspired me to always try and overcome perceived limitations and go beyond what might seem possible. The soundtrack is so beautiful and inspiring too. Such a powerful film
Gattaca was such a good movie. So thought provoking and inspirational.
I'm surprised to hear that Gattaca was not that popular when it came out. I saw it back then in Strasbourg and it INSTANTLY became one of my ALL TIME favorite movies and it has remained so TILL THESE DAYS. Since then, I must have seen it 30x or more and still love it like I did the first day.
I love this movie. I've seen it so many times and I've always been struck by how little I hear or read about it. Glad to hear it's being shown in class and glad you put a spotlight on it.
My high school science teacher showed this film to my science and ethics class in 2011. I absolutely love it.
This one was way ahead of its time and it's crazy to think it wouldn't even get made these days.
Making this film nowadays I think would terrorize and sap the efforts of a lot of lobbies in science and DNA SP500 firms because they are to accelerate all in into the drowning swim. Those implications the film reveals are yet to be realized in the real world, because every tool is being matured right now. Cripsr, dolly, luminescent living beings, cloning pets are just the beginning of a giant scale nightmare if we don't know and watch this film carefully. Yet some small scale structures will get all this dystopian set of course in the future. Hopefully we don't get trapped in one of those by our living time. Thanks for the reminder, Joblo.
It definitely is one of my favourite movies. I've seen it many times and I always cry at the end. That soundtrack is amazing.
"They've got you looking so hard for any flaw that after a while that's all you see"
Had that pinned to my notice board for ages after the film came out. And that was 12 years before Instagram so it feels even more apt now.
A sci fi little engine that could. One of my favorite flicks
Never seen? Every biology class I had throughout school showed this movie. Love it to this day.
Love the aesthetic of this movie. The retro-futuristic cars, the sets/costumes and the cinematography is just great.
It is a movie that should be watched by all and at all costs these days
One of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time, and it achieved it with a great story, characters, and pacing, with hardly a dime spent on special effects.
This movie is one of my all-time favorites, a real diamond in the rough. I remember my parents and I driving by the aqueduct in Los Angeles when they were filming. I'm so glad this movie was made.
One of my top 20 favorite films
the slippery slope isn't designer babies. its getting rid of autism, or ensuring a healthy single baby (not twins) in your 40s.
The real world medical reasons for "designer babies" is usually the foot in the door of these dangerous technologies.
But how might birth rates and parenting strategies changes if you no longer had this age limit of 35 - 40 years old in general to have healthy children? ( I realize 35 may not seem old, but its clinically high risk in the medical profession)
this was a great movie and affected me in a similar way around the same age. Good video.
I pressed the thumbs up button just based on the title alone. Its actually my all time favorite movie. Love it soooo much. The movie was ignored at the time because we had bigger sci fi flix buzzing back then like Armageddon and Independence Day. I didnt even bother watch it till about 2004.
My teacher is 9th grade biology played this movie for our class to learn about alternating genetics. I remembered how unique this film was to anything I’ve seen at the time. Absolutely love it, and gonna give it a rewatch soon. And I agree, the 90s had some of the best films/ creative films to come out
I have fond memories of watching this with my eldest sister.

'The worth of a movie can never be judged by how much money it makes'. I could not agree more. I would pick this type of a movie over superhero one every time.
I think you mean the best movie lunatics like me literally watched 50 times in the 5 years after it after it came out on Laserdisc when the director/actor commentaries were honestly much rarer, and felt precious and that movie was absolutely genius, and brilliant from start to end. Gattaca is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. I owned it on VHS and played the hell out of it in college. It was super inspirational to help me excel is school and the soundtrack got me through many late nights of term papers. Ethan Hawke is one of my favorites and I try to see every movie he appears in.
I was one of the lucky few who actually saw Gattaca when it was in theaters. If memory serves, I even saw it a second time when it hit the dollar theater.
I have to say, I saw this film on DVD maybe two or three years after it came out. I absolutely detest Uma Thurman. I don't know why but I just don't like her and normally would not watch anything she is in. That being said I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and have thought about it so many times since I saw it - which was only the once. I have though about it pretty much more than any other film, which is really strange. I can still see scenes in my mind's eye very clearly. It was certainly well before it's time and I do believe that if it was launched today it would be a huge hit and quite salient with current events. Incredible movie and one day hopefully it will be recognised as such. Thanks for this review. J
This is one of my favorite movies. I just saw this again a few days ago on Showtime.
I need to see this movie again. I remember Siskel & Ebert's review, and Roger liked it a lot. But Gene had a problem with the cheap space launch at the end. Roger defended it, as why does everything have to be so complex and special effect wise. Maybe in the future going into space is as easy as boarding a subway? So as much as I liked the movie after the review, I too felt like Gene at the end. And I can usually buy into simplistic sci-fi ideas of teleportation and metal clad robots and all. I think I can watch it now more from Roger's perspective.
I watched this movie and recommend it to everyone when I remember to. I was shook on the treadmill scene.
A masterpiece, pure and simple. Thank you for your excellent review and invitation for those who haven’t seen this great film.
Sooooooo good! A great story, shot gorgeously with a gorgeous soundtrack.
I remember liking this movie when it came out in the 90’s. But it wasn’t until I grew older and watched it again after my brother passed away that it became my absolute favorite. Growing up poor and always feeling like the lesser of my brother it drove me to try my hardest to overcome any obstacle in life. This film makes me miss my brother in so many ways because I wish in life I we were not in competition with one another. This is the greatest film. Especially the metaphors.
Thank you for including this underrated masterpiece- I was about the same age as you when I saw it still recommend it to people
My high school biology teacher actually showed this one in class near the end of the school year
Arash Akbar too funny and cool 😎
Thank you for reviewing this amazing flim. I remember watching this film on one of the late night TV slots and was intrigued by the topic and was shocked that it did not get the recognition it deserved. The final swim scene as mentioned delivered something that I still remember till today, that sometimes passion, determination and hard work accounts for so much more than predetermination.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I love the line "I never saved enough for the swim back." In other words give everything you got.
Absolutely one of my favourite movies, I've watched it countless times but I must disagree with you saying it had a pretty decent trailer. The trailer is terrible and a major reason why it didn't do well on release.
I saw this in the theater. And it introduced me to Jude Law.

Interesting. What college? I took genetics in college, and had a teacher (male) who made it part of the lesson. You had to watch on your own time, however.
Always memorable, and rewatches are a privilege.
I watched this in Greymouth, New Zealand in 1998. Loved it and went back to watch it again the following night. Great film.
This is actually one of my favorite films. I love that minimal ..almost non-existent...special effects were used in a sci-fi movie , thus focusing on the characters and the story. Its depiction of a possible future for us if we choose to fool around with the human genome is the message and well delivered. Being shot with a green filter was also a genius move that worked well . This is one of several films I enjoy watching again and again, and if money earned I determines the worth of a film then we'd have to say that Orsen Welles ' "Citizen Kane" is a total loser and a flop by those standards.
Love this movie. Ethan Hawke seems to have something for these movies where he starts out low and through his abilities moves up in life. His other film I love was Great Expectations, both movies are wonderful cinema.
Concise and to the point. Good job
I've loved this movie for a long time. Thanks for your well-crafted reminder. More people need to know of this film.
This was such an awesome movie. A lot of world building and great concepts. If you talk about this movie in terms of eugenics it makes an interesting case both for and against, making the watcher have to think, nature vs heart, and the amount of detail on how to beat the system.
