yes I saw this movie when I was 19 and applied that line to my own life moving forward. It worked! Truly a movie for struggling young men trying to find their way in the world. I watch it back every few years as a reminder even at this age of 46 lol. Brings back some beautiful memories.
In a way I think it hits a similar vibe as Blade Runner. Its funny how when Vincent is going to Eugene's home, he is told by the guy: "His expiration date in unbelievable". "Expiration date". I wonder if that was a little wink to B.R
If you are reading this Ethan, I want you to know that I saw it as a kid, and it was very inspiring. Should be mandatory watching for teenagers. Thank you for being part of that gem.
I saw it as a teen, and it was very similar to the films they would show us at school as educational entertainment. Perhaps it should be added to the curriculum. Perhaps it already has been.
"For someone not meant for this world, I must confess, I am suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say that every atom in our bodies was once a part of a star. Maybe I am not leaving. Maybe I am going home." Ethan, dude, it makes me cry everytime I see this scene. You were wonderful in the movie, as was Jude Law. Andrew Niccol did an amazing job.
Thank you for that, my science teacher showed me this movie in high school and I’ve never forgotten it since, it had such an impact on me and I had never heard of it before then. The students you show it to, at least some will remember watching it on your classroom for the rest of their lives.
Same. I have to admit, I didn't fully understand it at first. But something about it stuck with me. I rewatched it later in life and, at that point, you know. The struggles were real. And then I understood. I achieved things other's called genius. I mean, it was wasted on that company. But I still did it. But no matter how tough things got, I never forgot the lesson.
my biology teacher showed it to me in high school. i overlooked it back then, but it definitely stuck to me as interesting. i rewatched it, and its my favorite film now.
Gattaca is a masterpiece, the kind of movie that can impact people long after they've watched it and cause change. That's more than can be said about most other films.
Ethan, I saw Gattaca when it came out, and I've probably seen it 50 to 60 times since, to this point. There are people that DO understand that movie and love it for how well it was done. We're out there.
I'm lucky to have seen Gattaca in cinema in 1997. I was so fascinated and overwhelmed by the visual style, its underlying message, the score, everything. It's a film I revisit repeatedly as I grow older (and hopefully wiser), and I take something away from it everytime as I repeatedly view it with a different lens and perspective in life. My favourite film till date. Nothing comes close.
He said it perfectly. "I never saved anything for the swim back" is also my favorite line from the movie. It's great that he favors it so much as well!
I watched GATTACA over 20 years ago. It resonates with me. It's more of a humanitarian movie. I like GATTACA too for the same reasons as Ethan discussed. A masterpiece!!!!🌷🌿🍂🍃
Man....i watched it when I was young... I didn't even get the story.. watching it now it's the most underrated movie of all time...no joke, it's a masterpiece.... nothing come close... beautiful
Time was definetely Gattaca's ally. I remember looking at Gattaca's add on the magazine (back when magazines were plenty). I got hooked up just by those 2 walking down the stairs, Uma Thurman making that movement with her hand (later I discovered it was his) and then them running.. I was like 12 years old. Still love that movie. What an ending. Still gives me the chills.
Gattaca is one of the best movies of all time! So many reasons why… but one I’ve come to love is that it’s one of the only movies I’ve seen where the hero is the one who is so void of all emotions almost, calculated, dry, and shows no excitement when they overcome obstacles. Yet the viewer receives it all with so much feeling and meaning. It’s amazing how such a character can bring so many feelings to the surface.
I am an 8th grade school teacher. I just showed Gattaca to my social studies students, and they loved it! They are learning ethics in space, and it hits so hard! They are still amazed it was filmed in 1997
Gattaca - I don’t know how many times I’ve enforced to others that this is a film that should be shown to every film student. It’s EPIC in it’s writing & concepts - how many times have I told others - How did you make it - they ask ! & I reply - I didn’t save anything for the SWIM back. One of the greatest lines in cinema. & look at where we are today in 2023 with AI & social acceptance through a global pandemic of FAKE - everything. Ahead of it’s time this cinema classic.
I saw Gattaca on opening weekend in 1997 and absolutely loved it. Gattaca is one of my favorite movies of all times. Unfortunately, the theme, plot, and concept were beyond the grasp of the IQ of the average moviegoer. The movie is very much in the Science Fiction genre, but it is not action Sci-Fi like Star Wars. It failed at the box office because many people could not understand it. Very sad to say that right now I don't know if you could make a movie that is targeted to a more intelligent crowd like you could then. I miss films (and books) that make me think.
Jude Law also did a great job in the movie as well, you start off wanting to not like him and end up liking his character in the end. The movie in part is about the nature of the human spirit and that perfection and excellence isn’t just something that comes from someone that is supposed to be perfect. Even Angels fall and have their frailties and fears and misgivings and can make mistakes.
For me personally I find so many pieces of sci-fi media from the past (even the recent past) feel like they're no longer in touch with the modern zeitgeist (go figure) nor paint a plausible vision of the future, good or bad. GATTACA is the one film to buck that trend for me. Even now (maybe even more so now) it feels like such a grimly plausible vision of our future. A future where we manage to solve most of our current problems, but in doing so create a horribly dystopian world where nobody has any say in their future from the day that they're born.
That is my all time favorite movie ever! I watched every time I needed inspiration to move forward and follow my dreams. The movie has so powerful quotes like: I never saved anything for the swim back, there still a million miles left to go, for someone who wasn’t meant to be be for this world, I’m having a hard time leaving it, one year is just a turn to the sun, I was never closer to my dream until I was standing next to it, etc. This movie is so beautiful and I identify with Vincent so much because I wasn’t mean to be where I am right now and it took me so much effort to make it work! Thank you Ethan!
Gattaca was one of the best all time movies. Not only is it an amazing story and a great part of the Scifi genre, it was beautifully executed. The acting, the writing, the cinematography, the MUSIC, the directing, the sets and costumes.... Its quite the masterpiece.
What a beautiful movie that I keep revisiting every several years. I’m learning how life is not a single departure, most commonly death. But multiple departures along the way. Us departing from loved ones, others departing from us, and each time we rediscover ourselves we slightly depart from the previous person we thought we were. I loved how the movie conveyed the immense power of will over sensibility and rationalization.
I remember hearing the score at the theater waiting for curtain to open and seeing the film loving it and then forgetting about it until I grew up and becoming my favorite movie of all time
Time has made GATTACA what it is. It hasn’t resonated more throughout time than now. My bio teacher showed it to us, and it’s been with me ever since. The music is perfect and the message of the movie as well.
Gattaca is one of my top 5 favorite films. I always recommend it to people. It just really touches me with its themes of identity and perseverance and belonging.
One of my favorite movies of all time on a very short list. "Gattaca" is my relationship with my estranged brother. " I never saved anything for the swim back and it made me into a better person.
Gatica is one of my favourite Sci-fi movies that is more relevant today than when it was released. It’s beautifully crafted with characters as flawed and insightful as you will see in any piece of cinematography.
so glad my 9th grade bio teacher showed us this movie back in 2014. It was my first time watching it. I recently watched it for the second time last week.
I was 12 when it came out and it has remained one of my favorite films I’ve ever seen. That’s pretty incredible for a film to resonate so much with a 12 year old and for that same kid to remember how amazing it was 27 years later!!! I think I’ve watched it 7 or 8 times over the years. And I remember at 12 telling my friends about it and they thought I was weird 😂
Being completely honest it's hands down my favorite film of all time. It's not perfect but it's truly beautiful and great. The score, the cinematography, the acting, the writing all mesh together so well.
I was explaining to my wife how cool Gattaca is, how beautiful it is with its “metaphors and allegories” and my favorite scene is the brothers swimming. Then started watching scenes from the movie on CZcams and then came across this video. I’ve never felt more validated in my life 😅. Also the OST is phenomenal
I just watched Gattaca for the first time today. It was mandatory and for a class assignment. Best assigned movie I’ve ever watched, and I want to watch it again in the future. I wish I saw it as a young teenager or late adolescent, maybe I would have been inspired to actually discover what I wanted to do with my life.
Gattaca is one of my favorite films of Ethan Hawkes. I saw it first at 13 years old and hated it because there’s no action. I expected a “Sci/fy action. But I watched it later and understood it more and found myself wanting to watch again and again. It’s a great film👏👏👏I think the marketing of the film was misleading as he said people expected action. That might be why it wasn’t appreciated during its release
Gattica is a great film , everything about that film is fantastic , its a film ahead of its time , what hurt was bad marketing , a bad trailer and a little boat called the Titanic , if I put the two films together side by side , to me Gattica wins hands down. The movie is deep and I remember when it came out the trailer was misleading but when I saw the film 3 times , once at 15 , 24 and 31 , I appreciate it so much. One of those films that people will see and say how come no one talks about this film.
Thay was so beautiful. I have loved this movie i was a teen when it came out. I do remember turning to my friend and aaying that seems so unlikely. That will be far, far in the future. He looked right at me and aaid they already have aome laws on the books. As the years go by i notice more and more that i love about it.
I first watched Gattaca when I was around 13 and I was so intrigued by it. It left an impression on me of what if this film is a reflection of what society will become. But its the perseverance from Vincent in a society that shunned him that kept me mesmerized while watching. I even felt like Director Josef knew all along who he was and his limitations, which is why he killed the other director. I was at the edge of my seat, because I really wanted him to make it, when Dr Lamar seemed like the last obstacle but turned a blind eye, it was reminder of the faith in humanity. Not everything involving space has to be Star Wars and Star Trek.
I think it’s because people don’t know what gattaca means or where it was derived from. As a Star Wars fan, I didn’t watch gattaca until I had to for a class. I probably watched the film like 7-8 times by now. Beautiful movie and yet overlooked
It was a wonderful movie. Intelligent. Thought provoking. Great look to it that stood out. One of my favourites. When I saw it I thought it was ahead of its time.
It's one of my all time favorite films. It shows to just do you're best under all social circumstances in a postmodern societal, utopian/eugenic world.
Gattaca is up there with Shawshank and Goodfellas for me. As in if it’s on I’m watching it. Since I was a kid every time I watch the swimming scene when they’re teenagers and again when they’re grown, for some reason it hypes me up. The style, the writing, the suspense, it’s just all around a great movie in my opinion.
Gattaca is the greatest film that I have ever watched. Whenever I am feeling down or demotivated it helps me get back on my feet. If Vincent the invalid can do it why can’t the rest of us also fake it until we make it?
İ watched gattaca nearly 20 times. İm not kidding. İt is good for my anxiety because if you have anxiety, you think i never success anything.the scene is "it is possible" really effect on me.
“I NEVER saved anything for the swim back” Also one of my favorite quotes from any actor, so profound with life philosophy
That's the line I remember too!!
One of my favorite film scenes and one liner.
a good line but a little pretentious
It's not a quote from the actor, it's a quote from the movie, from the writer/director, Andrew Niccol.
yes I saw this movie when I was 19 and applied that line to my own life moving forward. It worked! Truly a movie for struggling young men trying to find their way in the world. I watch it back every few years as a reminder even at this age of 46 lol. Brings back some beautiful memories.
Gattaca is timeless. You can watch it now and the messages ring true to this day. Way ahead of its time.
In a way I think it hits a similar vibe as Blade Runner. Its funny how when Vincent is going to Eugene's home, he is told by the guy: "His expiration date in unbelievable". "Expiration date". I wonder if that was a little wink to B.R
Gattaca always gets mentioned to him. And for good reasons.
It's one of the best films he's has ever made.
One of the best movies ever
If you are reading this Ethan, I want you to know that I saw it as a kid, and it was very inspiring. Should be mandatory watching for teenagers. Thank you for being part of that gem.
I saw it as a kid and hated it. Now one of my favorite films.
I saw it as a teen, and it was very similar to the films they would show us at school as educational entertainment. Perhaps it should be added to the curriculum. Perhaps it already has been.
Yup, saw it when I was 17. To this day, still one of my top three films.
I had the same experience.
It's a great film for English and Biology in High School...
Definitely makes me cry at those points.
absolutely my favorite line, from any movie i have ever seen.
I've shown this to my high school science classes for 20 years. It makes people think.
Thank you for that, my science teacher showed me this movie in high school and I’ve never forgotten it since, it had such an impact on me and I had never heard of it before then. The students you show it to, at least some will remember watching it on your classroom for the rest of their lives.

my biology teacher showed it to me in high school. i overlooked it back then, but it definitely stuck to me as interesting. i rewatched it, and its my favorite film now.
It’s an ode to the human spirit and ingenuity. My favorite movie. And doctor Lamar twist is very emotional and beautiful.
The way Ethan Hawkes face looked was just amazing. Heart wrenching for sure
And it was set early in the film. Great twist indeed, doesnt come cheap trick at all
Did I ever tell you about my son? He is a big fan of yours
Gattaca is a masterpiece, the kind of movie that can impact people long after they've watched it and cause change. That's more than can be said about most other films.

Gattaca is my favorite film of all time. Nothing else comes close.
Love Gattaca. One of my top 15 movies ever. You would take it over interstellar though?
He said it perfectly. "I never saved anything for the swim back" is also my favorite line from the movie. It's great that he favors it so much as well!
I love Gattaca - it’s a movie about the triumph of the human spirit of adversity. When times are tough this is the film I always watch.
I can’t believe they’re people who disliked Gattaca. It’s one of my fav movies of all time
I just watched Gattaca recently , and found it very thought provoking and moving!
One of my favorite movies of all time. The story of struggle, the brothers and overcoming impossible odds. Timeless and beautiful.
I watched GATTACA over 20 years ago. It resonates with me. It's more of a humanitarian movie. I like GATTACA too for the same reasons as Ethan discussed. A masterpiece!!!!🌷🌿🍂🍃
Man....i watched it when I was young... I didn't even get the story.. watching it now it's the most underrated movie of all time...no joke, it's a masterpiece.... nothing come close... beautiful
Gattaca is a MASTERPIECE
Ethan Hawke is quite wise, honest and real. I think I would enjoy having a conversation with him.
Good take I've never really thought of that before. The movie has an indescribable feel to it I love it
Gattaca is a brilliant movie. Absolutely great movie.
Ethan Hawk, it was an amazing piece of art. Be proud. It is my favorite movie of all time.
Gattaca is a master peace. I love that movie. Jude , Uma and Ethan . ITS a great film. ❤
Gattaca has been one of my top favourites since I was a kid.
Always beautiful and meaningful. ❤❤
Gattaca is in my top 3 for sure.
What an impactful movie for a teenager seeking recognition.
I am an 8th grade school teacher. I just showed Gattaca to my social studies students, and they loved it! They are learning ethics in space, and it hits so hard! They are still amazed it was filmed in 1997

Dude, you saved my life with that film.
Same. It changed the way I view myself in a very important way.
I saw Gattaca on opening weekend in 1997 and absolutely loved it. Gattaca is one of my favorite movies of all times. Gattaca was certainly one of the best films of the 1990s.
Loved it when it first came out in the theaters ... love it still.

Thank you Ethan!
Gattaca has been my favorite movie for over 15 years. It's beautiful, thought-provoking, well acted, and stays with the viewer.
He's completely right, GATTACA 🟧♾️🟧
Gattaca was one of the best all time movies. Not only is it an amazing story and a great part of the Scifi genre, it was beautifully executed. The acting, the writing, the cinematography, the MUSIC, the directing, the sets and costumes.... Its quite the masterpiece.
Gattaca is one of my all time favorite films. I've watched it dozens of times. It's sooo beautiful! Bound to become a classic.
It was way ahead of it's time....fav for alltime
One of the most underrated movies.

Many talk about training day and dead poet society and for good reason, but Gattaca deserves a mention in his resume for sure.
Time has made GATTACA what it is. It hasn’t resonated more throughout time than now. My bio teacher showed it to us, and it’s been with me ever since. The music is perfect and the message of the movie as well.
So much truth in this interview. Ethan Hawke is one of the great thinkers of our time
settle down now
Gattaca is one of my top 5 favorite films. I always recommend it to people. It just really touches me with its themes of identity and perseverance and belonging.
One of my favorite movies of all time on a very short list. "Gattaca" is my relationship with my estranged brother. " I never saved anything for the swim back and it made me into a better person.

I always loved Hawke and his work, but this interview is one of my favorite things he's done, I'd never seen this before.
One of my favourite movies.
Ethan Hawke performance is amazing, nailed it! And he is still a good looking man❤
Being completely honest it's hands down my favorite film of all time. It's not perfect but it's truly beautiful and great. The score, the cinematography, the acting, the writing all mesh together so well.
Just watched till the end an i would definitely recommend it
One of the first DVDs I owned.

I wish I saw it as a young teenager or late adolescent, maybe I would have been inspired to actually discover what I wanted to do with my life.
My favorite film as a teenager. I saw it 5 times in theatres like a weirdo when I lived in Calgary... Ditto with Fifth Element..
My favourite movie too Vincent.Wish you all the best
Same
Gattaca is one of my favorite films of Ethan Hawkes. I saw it first at 13 years old and hated it because there’s no action. I expected a “Sci/fy action. It’s a great film👏👏👏I think the marketing of the film was misleading as he said people expected action. That might be why it wasn’t appreciated during its release
I watch this movie every year… for many reasons…
It is the best motivational movie ever made. Great movie. Great actors. Great scenario. Each word is a diamond.
Amazing film....writing and music
One of my all time favorites! Surely! It is not easy for me to say that about a movie..
Ethan Hawke is one of my favorite actors of all time. And, Gattaca was definitely my favorite of his!
i do wonder if ethan hawke is a tinkerer, he seems to me somewhere comfortably between a mechanic and a mad scientist.

It's one of my all time favorite films. It shows to just do you're best under all social circumstances in a postmodern societal, utopian/eugenic world.
Gattaca is such a beautiful movie. :-)
Siskel and Ebert loved it at the time.
one of my favorite films of all time
Gattaca was the most memorable film for me
one of my Fav hard sci-fi movies, very emotional and true to modern SpaceX rapid rocket launches
Gattaca is one of the greatest films of all time! Timeless!
Gattaca is an underrated classic!
It's my favorite movie of all time
It's a movie that's gonna still be relevant to us as long as we are human. That's no small feat.
Gattaca is a masterpiece, such a big inspiration for me.
From memory, Roger Ebert gave it a glowing review.
"Gattaca" was intelligent, introspective, and carried unbelievably powerful thematic underpinnings. Overall, society isn't receptive to those things.
Time hasnt been a friend to predestination
He is so cool and love this movie
Gattaca is the greatest film that I have ever watched. Whenever I am feeling down or demotivated it helps me get back on my feet. If Vincent the invalid can do it why can’t the rest of us also fake it until we make it?
I like Ethan Hawke a lot. Good head on him.
İ watched gattaca nearly 20 times. İm not kidding. İt is good for my anxiety because if you have anxiety, you think i never success anything.the scene is "it is possible" really effect on me.
A very very important film
