  • Gattaca - Humanity and Class Struggle in Hard Sci-Fi
    Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman
    Director - Andrew Niccol
    Released in 1997, director Andrew Niccol weaves a narrative that raises issues of determinism and discrimination while establishing a grounded sense of familiarity. Gattaca’s enduring legacy as a sci-fi classic is owed to the use of established scientific logic, a creative use of setting, and a familiar story of class struggle.

    Excellent analysis. The moment at the end of the film when the doctor lets him through is so touching so heartwarming and yet the film remains a profoundly sad one for me. An excellent and intellectually stimulating film and one that I have long loved.

      not sad. Just another slave story. As for Jerome. I used to think it was sad too but have changed on that. Watch again and see him stare when he says he is "traveling too". He means it. To die will be a journey itself.

    Great job walking us through the movie and explaining its valuable points! I wish this movie was analyzed in schools as a classic staple like great gatsby, so many ways of showing how science and technological advances have shaped our culture into what it is today. I wish more discussions focused on the two dynamics set up between being a perfect valid man like Jerome created had failed at his potential and wanted to commit suicide, even failed at that with his first attempt, and Vincent was born with no expectation and no responsibility to motivate him to try and he was never afraid of failure or the odds of success because of the movies main theme of the human drive. The movie gives Vincent the epic moment to highlight this struggle with him telling his brother “I never saved anything for the swim back.” There could be a discussion around Jerome enjoying Vincent’s dream with him having supported him to provide his DNA test material and identity. The doctor and the brother would also be great subtopics cause little time is given to them but they receive pivotal moments in the film. The mature topics of free will vs determination is an obvious theme as well as self development with limitations would give children a grounded view of adulthood as they are just grasping the basics of material and spiritual attributes of life.

    I remember watching this movie as a kid in the 90's with my dad and i loved it although i didn't fully understand the messages i loved the undercover operation ethan hawkes character went through to avoid getting exposed i always remembered the name of the movie as it was unusual so this week i got around to watching it again around 25 years later and loved it.

    The ending is kind of dubious, no?
    The speech by Vincent " they say we were all stars once, so maybe I am not leaving, maybe I am coming home" suggests that he thinks he would not survive the trip.
    So, it's like double suicide..

I watched V for Vendetta the other day for the first time and it was one of those films where I know there’s an idea there but I can’t dig it out. @@bodiesatva Ah yes because the current people alive totally read up scientific publications and see the benefits of Tissue and Genetic engineering not only to eradicate every know diseases known to man and the potential answer to immortality. There totally wont be the formation of multi religious causes and civilian militias that vehemently despise and prevent GMOs, its not like people in the 2020s are soooooooo misinformed.
      Ignoring the practicality of a world like Gattaca. I'd like to ask: Do you love myopia? Do you love sitting in a wheel chair?
      Fear and dread sells. Like it or not, not everyone is ok with dying because they believe sky daddy will save them in heaven. So men and women all around the world will fund or research cures. Then they hope one day these will be usable for THEMSELVES AND THEIR LOVED ONES. Do you think an invalid will exist or do you think they'll pay to cure themselves of mortality and diseases.
      What you should be worried about is who controls the tech and monetises. I swear everyone thinks MNC biofirms are run by super well organised cults or something. They are run by the most insidious greedy pigs who only care about money, you think they'll bother with imposing politics? Answer is, depends on the highest bidder. Are you an invalid? Just bribe! EVEN THE MAIN CHARACTER DOES IT.
      Also Gattaca implies we have mastered the human genome. So why would ultra developed and enlightened humans not impart their super well thought out philosophies and advocate for the rights of invalids. Also why can't i buy healthy body parts to fix my damaged ones??? Do charities not exist anymore? Is science and common problem solving gone because valids cant design stuff to accommodate invalids?
      TLDR REAL HARD science disproves gattaca because its built on the flimsy foundation that super humans get sympathy, problem solving and greed magically deleted from their psyche.

    9:45 I'd argue that she's a borrowed ladder aswell, and the movie is just subtle about it, because technicly speaking, if someone were to be genetically engineered, why would they have a defect? The intro of the movie says exactly that they figured it out, they've got it down pat, a heart condition showing up accidentally is really unlikely.

    Ex-machina is soft sci-fi bro, we are so so far from actual AI, and might not even ever manage to teach them how to resemble humans, moral and value wise.

    • @PopFluent
      @PopFluent  Před 3 lety +6

      Ex-Machina is hard sci-fi. Hard Sci-fi doesn’t mean it needs to be possible right now. It’s more about emphasis on detail and context to make something fictitious feel plausible. In this case, Ex-Machina exposes the practical limitations of the Turing test and our current understanding of passable AI. Other than a moment where Nathan describes collecting user data to create a framework, the film cleverly steers away from focusing on exactly how Nathan creates Ava and instead it focuses on exploring what it might be like to interact with such advanced AI. We’re basically pushed to accept we’re watching a world where AI exists so we can then shift our attention to other related principles. I’ll admit it’s not quite as Hard Sci-fi compared to Gattaca (few films are), but it still fits the definition.

      @@PopFluent I guess if you put it that way it's understandable. I did say tho that it might not even be possible to ever replicate human behavior and that's not my own take but one from many experts and AI enthusiasts. Anyway thanks for your input.

    • @PopFluent
      @PopFluent  Před 3 lety +1

      @@olddohko9037 I see where you're coming from. I think you're right about AI being pretty far off, at least in the way shown in Ex Machina. Sci-fi movies are just taking their best guess right now about how AI could work. It's interesting to see how movies change as technology inches closer to smarter AI though. Makes me wonder what kind of sci-fi we'll get a hundred years from now.
