ben stiller is really an underrated director. deserves much more credit than he gets. also glad this movie has retroactively found an audience after all these years, I always thought it was also criminally underrated

People expected a full on Jim Carrey comedy but instead got a more darker and sad story. The movie is actually a masterpiece. People didn't really fancy the Trumanshow either, which made Jim Carey joke about people not really knowing what to think about him in drama. But I think people can look back today and go Wow, because these movies are really well made and amazing.

Love this movie! Remember watching this on HBO. Brilliant.
I saw it with my best friend on opening day, and we were the only ones in the theater. It was an omen.
This making of, shows me that Jim Carrey made it ;D lol The medieval times, the fighting moves, the great singing, the slam dunk, the playing with food, all his ideas & improvisation ;D.
And Ben Stiller as an director captured all of it really well. Matthew played his role great too, believably normal person, yet to experience such an intrusive friend.
The Cable Guy is a 90s' comedy classic and best pre The Truman Show Jim Carrey movie.
I know this wasn't a hit when it came out but when I was a teenager, late 90's to early 00's, everyone loved it. I think it's mostly because Ace Ventura 1 and 2 made us all think anything Jim Carrey did was divine.
I ran into the Apatow family at a recent charity event, and when I saw Leslie in this video at 16:07, I was amazed thinking how her daughter Iris looks exactly like her. Judd is a lucky man and has done really well for himself.
This is actually the only movie i laughed at so hard I got a stomach ache.
Hard to believe now that Chris Farley was up for consideration to play the Cable Guy. I couldn't see anyone else but Jim Carrey in that role

@@xjcrossxI disagree, I know this is gonna hurt your feelings probably… But Chris Farley wasn’t that good, he had his moments when he was funny but that was it… nothing he did outside of SNL was good aside from Tommy Boy. Everything he did after was a flop, his footage of voicing Shrek wasn’t that good. I guarantee you that Shrek would’ve sucked had Farley done it instead of Mike Myers
I could easily see Chris in the role! I could see him entertaining the family by doing enormous belly flops on the floor instead of playing the porno password game, as he did on Saturday Night Live! This might have been an even funnier scene with Chris doing this!😂

That pick up basketball game really stands out to me as I played until my mid 40's and so many games there was a JIM CARREY like guy who would ruin it for everyone else! The guy who every time he missed a shot would call FOUL and the GUY who had no concept of the PASSING to an open TEAM MATE and the guy who just made a fun day into a day you wished you never showed up to play! hahaha

Quite possibly my favorite movie of all time.. definitely my favorite comedy movie ever.. it's truly a masterpiece, so well written, very well directed, the acting is so good. You can almost quote every single line in the movie. would love to see a sequel with the entire cast back again, give Jack Black and Ben Stiller larger roles this time

I think when this came out people weren't prepared for a dark Jim Carrey. But now it's become a cult movie.
That’s because people didn’t know at the time that he was incredibly versatile and talented, and it pisses me off that some people still don’t know that. They still dismiss him as repetitive comedian even though they’ve seen him play different characters in all of his movies 🙄
@@nsasupporter7557 I agree but in a way he'd boxed himself in a corner with the roles he'd taken on. He stretched himeself with serious roles but the media always labelled him as the clown. A bit like Tome Cruise who never got the recognition he deserved for his serious roles either.

But really, he’s versatile in all of his comedians too… Ace Ventura is different from the Mask and Dumb and Dumber and Cable Guy and Liar Liar and all of those movies and the characters he plays in them are different from eachother. Saw twice in a row when it came out. It was an outstanding movie that didn't make a lot of money. You can't figure out the public. A Jim Carrey classic if there ever was one.

Seriously a masterpiece. A legit layered performance from Jim that was ultimately hilarious but still disturbing at times. I loved it growing up and still do, I was shocked to hear this was negatively received upon release.

I have to imagine, at least Jim, Ben, and Matthew went on 'Montezuma's Revenge' while they were shooting in the OC. It wasn't cool at first when they let 'Jaguar' go through the loop but it grew on me. 'Boomerang' is another classic.

Even though Im sad that Chris Farley died, the film wouldn't be as good with him, Carrey plays the cable guy perfectly, and turned it in to a dark comedy.
EXACTLY! Chris Farley wasn’t that good in general… that’s why he didn’t have much of a career outside of SNL. All of his diehard fans make him out to be this incredible comedian… he wasn’t. He had his moments when he was funny, that was it. His footage of Shrek wasn’t that good and the movie wouldn’t have been as good if it was him instead of Mike Myers doing Shrek

i didnt know he was the director. however this movie kicks ass. i dunno why it didnt do well. mabey if they edited it diffrently people would have liked it more. people expected more comedy like ace ventura or mask. i wonder how much unused footage there is. .we need a sequel :)

the director i know him.i watched 3 or 4 of his movie before but he has a bit bear so i kinda forgot him.i cant remember which movie but i promise i see him before like.growing up i used to watched him.but that bear on his chin just cant meet my hear with brain
Only watched it again today. One of my absolute guilty pleasures from a Friday night in my childhood filled with cinema and junk food. It's just good dark humour and a great set up. The only thing I don't find works is Broderick and his girlfriend, Robin. Carrey works perfectly as the somewhat anti-hero stalker who while understandable and even somewhat redeemable at the end (slightly dubious as the film outright implies he's going to do it again despite knowing what his pathology from a lack of childhood and parental guidance could lead to, in the form of troubled behaviour and his eventual breakdown) is still a rather damaged person who needs help. As I say, the issue for me is Steven. He's just very unlikeable himself. Whether that was the goal to take some of the heat off of Chip or not, I'm not sure. But man, the guy just absolutely comes across as someone I would avoid having anything to do with, let alone pursuing as a friend, lonely troubled man or not. I think the execution would have worked better, in my opinion, if there was a genuine friendship or connection that formed with Chip and Steven and there's a couple of scenes I could mean. For example, perhaps you could have it where in the basketball scene, Steven is shown to have a love of basketball or be a competitive person himself, finding himself drawn to Chip's more intense, aggressive approach to basketball. And it would be only when Chip then takes it too far, jumping on Rick and destroying the basketball screen that he is pulled back to reality and begins to take issue with Chip. In the movie he just immediately takes issue with Chip's behaviour and then tells him off. That's all well and good, but in trying to position Chip as (like I said before) almost a relatable anti-hero or antagonist in the strictest sense of being something to 'overcome' instead of an outright villain, I think it hurts the movie that he is 99% of the runtime at a discord with Steven. You never really feel like there's a budding friendship between them, in my opinion, despite the movie attempting a few times to show that Steven is somewhat coming around to Chip before it's quickly snatched away every time. Even at the end of the scene, when he tells Chip clearly that they are not friends only to tell Robin that his 'friend' will help, just to get the cable working again and make use of chip for his skills instead of his attempts at being a friend, he just comes across as dislikeable, happy to cast Chip aside (fair enough as I'm sure many of us would get a person we'd just met out of our lives as quick as possible if Chip acted like he did on the basketball court) only to reel him back in just for his services. So possibly my biggest flaw in the movie is that the relationship between Steven and Chip never, to me at least, really takes off as any kind of potential friendship. Again, it's not that the movie seems to be going for this as Steven does almost immediately try to signal to Chip that he doesn't want to be his friend but given how they position Chip as troubled but understandable and well meaning, all wrapped up in a fun, comedic Jim Carrey performance, it's odd that the nature or tone of the relationship seems teetering more on thriller than comedy. It's difficult to explain as, I like the dark humour element of it and the structure works perfectly for me, so the supposed darkness is one of the things that always draws me back. But it's the lack of reciprocation on Steven's part, the lack of contribution from him in terms of making it even an initially growing friendship prior to the point where it will be torn up and set alight in order to push toward the climactic finale.
Same as when they go to Medieval times, it could be done where Steven despite some quiet initial protests quickly begins to enjoy the the Medieval times setting and again, actually begins to battle Chip of his own volition. In the movie he basically spends the whole scene trying to explain to Chip he doesn't want to be his friend then desperately arguing against fighting all the while still fighting. And they do have him say afterwards that 'we should go again'. Plus, yeah, that's kind of how every person would be if someone they just met took them to a live action role play event and attacked them in front of a crowd. So sure, I understand the writing. But for entertainments sake and to push the relationship to the point of having something there to actually be able to break away from when the stalker rejected zaniness occurs, I do feel like it would have been better for the movie if Steven was changed to be a more friendly person, someone you'd want to be friends with, someone you'd be obsessed with being friends with if you were a stalker and someone who is actually receptive to Chip's efforts. Even with Chip out of the picture, you have Steven just completely blow off Rick for Robin, with Rick implying this isn't the first or last time Steven has or will do this. So again, it doesn't put him in any sort of good light, let alone a light bright enough to justify Chip wanting to latch himself onto him, stalker or not.
And lastly is Robin, who I find on a worse level even to Steven for just being utterly dislikeable. Fair enough, she wanted space and asked Steven to move out following his proposal, that's a difficult situation for him to be in but understandable regardless. So it seems like they're at a point where they're taking some time apart from each other. Only, following Steven's Sleepless in Seattle moves suggested by Chip, she suddenly seems interested in rebuilding their romantic relationship that she decided was moving too fast. That's all well and good. But then she completely leaves Steven on the hook to go on a date with another man and not only expects him to understand but derisively tells him that, in spite of her recent pushes for them to begin returning to where they were, unwittingly motivated by Steven's saying all the right things, 'that doesn't mean we're officially back together', telling him she loves him but that she's still going on a date with another man, which is utterly bizarre for someone acting like they're still working towards being together again but just need some space from the urgency that a proposal brought on. That's just knowingly leaving Steven completely hanging while she shops around for other men and asserting to him that's what she should be doing when he checks her on it. Again, after meeting Chip perhaps three times maximum, she invites him to a game night with Steven's family without telling Steven despite it being a night in with his family and again, almost scornfully, condescendingly acts like he should be cool and casual that she invited Chip despite Steven's noticeable panic, regardless of whether or not she knows the recent events, not even taking the time to hear out the man who's supposed to be her boyfriend. But that's besides the point as, even when Steven addresses Chip as 'a lunatic and a felon', she just shuts him down with 'No, don't go. Steven, you are being an asshole' in front of his own family, the family of a man she was happy to play the field with just days before, despite his vocal protests. And yet they happily end up together by the end of the movie? I'd like to call it a 'maybe they deserve each other' but even despite Steven's flaws (perhaps they're meant to be 'everyman defects') he's far better than Robin who is just awful. And again, maybe that's part of the dark humour that I'm just not gelling with, that everything is closing in on Steven whether it makes sense for it to or not. But man does Robin suck.
So yeah, that's my thoughts on the only two things that don't work in the movie for me and what stop it going from guilty pleasure to loveable classic in my mind. Again, maybe those are the things that place it into the guilty pleasure category for me, the things that make me acknowledge 'yeah, it doesn't tick all the boxes, but it's still knowingly entertaining each time I watch it'. I think part of it is the directing, part of it is the script and the remainder is Leslie and Broderick's (who I share Critic's hate for in everything outside of Bueller and Lion King) acting, but considering they're pretty focal points of the film, they just don't hold up for me and leave it down to Chip to hold the movie high in my eyes.
I think there is an important scene missing, which could be kind of a bridge between prison scene and the family dinner one, or maybe it shoud have been placed even before the prison scene I don't know: that's the one when Chip and Robin meet together at lunch and talk about Chip's concerns over Steven.
I have no idea why they decided to delete it, I think that would have been important to understand more about the developing of the story and the relationship between Chip and Robin.
I do agree with you there are linkin parts missing and that Steven and Robin could have been depicted in a much more accurate way. On the other hand Jim's Chip is absolutely perfect. What an amazing job he did in portraying this character: his manic behaviour, his facial expressions, his cringe loud laugh together with such an intelligence in manipulating Steven's life from the moment they met, his coldness in planning and implementing his revenge.
It's a great character, I really like him!

I thought Chip being a stalker and annoying person that doesn't get the hint was kind of the point. That's probably why they didn't have Steve show much interest, although he was already too nice considering some weird stranger is completely invading his life. They also have completely different personalities from the get go. There's no way you'd think these two *shoud* be friends which adds to the comedy imo

Interesting, I think it would've been interesting to see Ben as the cable guy. Guess at the time Stiller wasn't as well known as an actor, so Carrey was the obvious choice.
