The subject is even more relevant today. I would also say that although Jim gets hate for this role, nobody else could have done this role justice. I was a teenager when this came out. Saw it a few times in theaters and was the first time I was one of the only people in the theater (I think there were five of us total that day). I kept hearing that it wasn't good but I didn't care. This movie was one of the movies I would watch constantly at home. As for your video...WOW!!!! That was an amazing analyzation of the film and made it make even more sense to me then it ever had before. Great job!
Interesting video. Good luck with the channel. I will say that - ironically, as with TV and movies - your volume levels jump between loud and quiet enough that I needed to change my volume settings in multiple places. If that wasn't intentional then you may want to check them for future videos.

I worshipped Jim when I was a kid. I was about 11-12 when this came out and though it was definitely different from his usual…my Dad and I loved it. And if there is no Cable Guy…there likely is no Truman Show.

Television apps truly changed the TV game. I worked for 3 months a dish network. I'm 36 and it was rare to see a customer even my age. Most were 50 or older just set in their ways. Or Mexican. Dish offers a good handful of stations is Spanish I'm sure that was the only reason they wanted it. That and satellite television is not cheap. But, since apps stole so many customers dish had to change their game to survive. Dish does sell a lot of stuff including an amazing Polk audio surround sound system that's puts Bose to shame. I was a good technician but no salesman. And sales was apart of the job. If I went a full day without selling anything my boss was not happy with me. In the end I resigned before getting fired. Because I suck at forcing people to buy things and I hate doing it. It's awkward and sometimes even upset the customer.

This was his best movie, people in the 90's just didn't get this dark comedy. They also didnt get the satire in the movie Starship Troopers. I was only a teen in the 90's but I feel like people were so stupid back then. Things didn't get any better either because people only got dumber with time. The movie Idiocracy explains the people of today perfectly.

This was at a peak high around 2008, if memory serves, when movie goers demanded more reality akin to that time's Batman franchise. A vocal minority insisted that art be a one to one representation of the reality we lived in at the time rather than an escape from the tragedies that plagued us. CZcams came along and the world at large was introduced to the parasocial relationships that were few and far between decades prior and more people than ever began to fall for the mistaken idea that good actors are good people. The fact that Steven was able to walk away from constant entertainment, is something i rarely see. Sure The Cable Guy is aggressive, violent, and mean but so is most entertainment and social media of today and god knows no one will give that up. A man just wanting a traditional job, bro , and wife is becoming the remnants of a bygone era. And I just read up on the murder of Cassie Jo Stoddart. Thats wild, really reminds me of the Scream 5 (unfortunately). It interesting to read people attempting movie tropes in real life, and find that it doesn't go quite as planned. (Makes me wonder if the victim herself was replaying her own horror film scenarios that affected her reactions to the situation.) The Pledge is an excellent example of cop films vs cop reality too. I been banging the drum for this movie since I first saw it back in 1996 when it came out! My favorite of Carey's philmography and one of Ben Stillers bolder early films!! Everyone in this film is perfectly cast! I stand on that sh*@!! ... And I STILL quote it!!
I loved this movie as a kid. Watching it was an adult it's much different. Ben stiller can not direct. Mathew seemed very lost in almost every scene. Jack black was also lost and wasted talent. There are so many plot holes. For example, if Jim Carry was fired from the cable company, shouldn't the real cable guy show up to install the cable? I have a hard time believing anything. I feel like if it was animated, it would make sense. It's not a bad movie, but it's also not good. Is it a comedy? Is it a character study? Is it a scary movie? I just don't know. If it's a comedy, Jack Black was completely wasted, and casting Mathew was a huge mistake. If it's a character study, Jim needed to dial it way back. If it's not a scary movie, what in the world was that dream sequence where Jim looks like the devil. That legit scared me as a kid.
Interesting that you came from liking it to not, I was the opposite. I kinda apperciate the wacky tone, I find it unique. And if you don't think Ben Stiller is good here, you should really check out Severance, he's really come in to his own distinctive Directing Style.
It never occurred to me before, but notice Cable Guy's recurring blue/gray/white color scheme. 7:45 Is he fingering the guard?! Why do movie people always finger the guard while holding two-handed swords one-handed?! Mel Gibson did it in Braveheart. Ian McKellen did it in 'The Two Towers'. It's a technique that's only useful with certain types of swords, namely rapiers. In fact, some of the more elegant ones have hilts and guards designed to be grasped that way for maximum one-handed control. So I'm wondering if maybe actors who tend to do that were classically trained in rapier-style fencing, then subconsciously ended up treating all swords like rapiers. 7:46 Broderick/Kovaks being left-handed gives him an advantage in armed melee combat. Supposedly, that is. They say "westpaws" (makes more sense than "southpaws") are more unpredictable. Not sure how true that is, but it does tend to be true that westpaws are more able to do more tasks ambidextrously or mix-handed. So "adaptable" might be a better word than "unpredictable." But here I am overanalyzing one brief moment of one scene. My excuse is that I've been binge-watching Skallagrim. 11:18 Jim adlib'd that scene. Notice how Broderick's trying really hard not to crack up. 🙃 26:13 That spider wasn't supposed to be there. Jim just went with it. 26:42 Ackchyually, a lateral lisp (see also Sid the sloth and William Murderface). Though, to be fair, abuse like that can also result in a psychogenic stutter (which is different from a developmental stutter). 27:55 Eros and Thanatos.

@@goodknightmoon7733 Quite the read! Yea i would have to say you sold me on Chip being more commonplace in today's society. The fact that Steven was able to walk away from constant entertainment, is something i rarely see. Sure The Cable Guy is aggressive, violent, and mean but so is most entertainment and social media of today and god knows no one will give that up. A man just wanting a traditional job, bro , and wife is becoming the remnants of a bygone era. And I just read up on the murder of Cassie Jo Stoddart. Thats wild, really reminds me of the Scream 5 (unfortunately). It interesting to read people attempting movie tropes in real life, and find that it doesn't go quite as planned. (Makes me wonder if the victim herself was replaying her own horror film scenarios that affected her reactions to the situation.) The Pledge is an excellent example of cop films vs cop reality too. Hard Recommend

I loved this movie as a kid. Watching it was an adult it's much different. Ben stiller can not direct. Mathew seemed very lost in almost every scene. Jack black was also lost and wasted talent.
There are so many plot holes. For example, if Jim Carry was fired from the cable company, shouldn't the real cable guy show up to install the cable?
I have a hard time believing anything. I feel like if it was animated, it would make sense.
It's not a bad movie, but it's also not good.
Is it a comedy? Is it a character study? Is it a scary movie? I just don't know. If it's a comedy, Jack Black was completely wasted, and casting Mathew was a huge mistake.
If it's a character study, Jim needed to dial it way back.
If it's not a scary movie, what in the world was that dream sequence where Jim looks like the devil. That legit scared me as a kid.
Interesting that you came from liking it to not, I was the opposite. I kinda apperciate the wacky tone, I find it unique. And if you don't think Ben Stiller is good here, you should really check out Severance, he's really come in to his own distinctive Directing Style.

It didn’t suck it just came out at the wrong time. Lots of movies suffered from this, but remained classics to this day.

7:45 Is he fingering the guard?! Why do movie people always finger the guard while holding two-handed swords one-handed?! Mel Gibson did it in Braveheart. Ian McKellen did it in 'The Two Towers'. It's a technique that's only useful with certain types of swords, namely rapiers. In fact, some of the more elegant ones have hilts and guards designed to be grasped that way for maximum one-handed control. So I'm wondering if maybe actors who tend to do that were classically trained in rapier-style fencing, then subconsciously ended up treating all swords like rapiers.
7:46 Broderick/Kovaks being left-handed gives him an advantage in armed melee combat. Supposedly, that is. They say "westpaws" (makes more sense than "southpaws") are more unpredictable. Not sure how true that is, but it does tend to be true that westpaws are more able to do more tasks ambidextrously or mix-handed. So "adaptable" might be a better word than "unpredictable." But here I am overanalyzing one brief moment of one scene. My excuse is that I've been binge-watching Skallagrim.

@@flashforthepeople9515 I'm only speculating about the swordplay. I don't know for sure which actors practice fencing except for Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. They were genuine-article swordsmen.
I just don't know where else an actor would get the idea to finger the guard.

I think all of his works are genius. Cable guy was an amazing movie! Its hyperbole stuff. It is different. Maybe its not the same person. Like they do sometimes in helmet sports.
