I've been trying to play this song ever since middle school. Dave is THE reason why I picked up my first instrument and I've been playing DMB for like 20 years now.
BUT even 20 years later, it took your video to make me realize how incredibly beautiful that 'every fire dies' part is. I'm blown away by you, subscribing to everything and anything you do. Hope you do more DMB in the future too

A big wow to you for this spectacular analysis. Ive been a dmb fan for 26 yrs now and have listened to this song a million times never realizing it's so musically ambitious and artistic. What I wouldn’t give for a completed studio cut / live version of Monkey Man.
Had LWS been completed, it may well have been their best studio effort. That Captain is leaps and bounds better than what we got off Busted Stuff (and that’s not to mean that the Busted Stuff version is bad - just so much more emotion and soul in the LWS cut).

Amazing analysis. DMB has had a huge impact on me as a musician. Arguably the largest influence. "You Never Know" is certainly one of my all time favorite songs of all time.

The crazy thing about this song is that, according to producer Stephen Harris, the band wrote it and recorded it in one day.
The first thing I did with this song was count out the time in each section. Also, what you'll find about Dave, and Carter even says this about when he first heard Dave's songs was they don't necessarily follow "the rules."
What an interesting video. Seeing DMB live more times than I can count I am always blown away by their individual talents all coming together so wonderfully.

Ive seen certain bands be exceptional at certain things, but live i have never come close to seeing one so consistently flexible with the ability to peak multiple times in a set. Every song is fair game in terms of someone stepping up with a new idea in a live performance.
This is an amazing DMB track!! They have 100+ tunes worth checking out, but this is amongst my favorites! Also, anything off “Before These Crowded Streets” is a must to check out. It’s their most mature & complete album & shows a band firing on all cylinders!

I love this video. Such an off-favorite DMB song to select for the breakdown, but which is such a great example of incredibly common tones and tropes that are extremely DMB. As a fan of the band since the Crash Days, I love that these themes have held true even throughout the coming and going of some drastically different members.

I love how you focus on Roi’s sax lines just as coherently as Dave’s melodies (even if you show the replacement sax player at the time heh). I feel like they’re often relegated to “solo noodling” but part of why he was so good is that the notes he played always had such intentionality.
You mention memorizing the sax parts and being able to sing along and it really does feel Ike that. Instrument as voice. So powerful.

Same here! Nearly 20 years later and I caught this live at SPAC. So much occurring in my life right now (Kids, job, ect) Hearing this song live at that moment... was appropriate. Very well done on the analysis!

This song has a particularly strong connection to me because it debuted in Boston in Spring 2002, night 1 - all the way back when I was in high school! I remember waking up the next day and downloading it from the now defunct forum Anyone Seen The Bridge, and it had been a particularly difficult previous day (my mom had started to go completely blind around this time in my life) so I just remember downloading it to my MP3 player to listen to on the bus to school, and having to hold back tears the entire ride. I went to the show that next day in Boston, where they unfortunately didn't play it. I had to wait until the following July to hear it in person, where I - again - had to fight back tears. It still reminds me of my mom every time I hear it. I lost her a couple years ago, so hearing that this may be about Dave's father (something I'd never even thought about as a long-time fan) just makes me feel that much more connected to this song.

Not only his father, but research his sister’s death in South Africa. Rather being related directly to specific people, always felt it’s just life versus death in general. Dave (like most people), has been through it.

ixi, I really appreciate this analysis. This is one of DMB’s strongest studio efforts, and I really like your observation of the parts getting shorter and shorter, simulating the passage of time and life.
Really cool observation of Dave’s vocal performance in the Bridge section. He uses his voice as an instrument remarkably well. And you nailed it - Stefan and Carter are two of the most underrated musicians in rock.
Curious, were you a DMB fan before this recommendation? If not, have you ventured into any more of their catalog?

As to your comments on whether the E was major or minor in the chorus - it was originally played live as an unresolved but implied major. Recently (I'm not sure when exactly) they've begun to resolve it as a minor. I always preferred the major implication which made it seem even more interesting. This song doesn't get enough traction among the many dmb songs, but it is very interesting. It's very different, it's one of the first things you'll notice about it. I heard it in Cincinnati this year.

This video is amazing. I am a long time DMB fan and have always loved this song, but now i love it even more. Have you become more interested in DMB's music, based on your work to create this video? It seems like there are parts of this song that really impress you and you seem to really like it. I think there is a lot more where that came from. Just wondering what your interest level is now, in the band and in Dave's writing.
Also, do you think that as a musician Dave was thinking about all the things you commented on and found during your analysis, when writing the music? Do musicians have to actively go through the process that you went through to analyze the music while writing, or does it just come naturally to them and then good music happens to lend itself to this kind of in depth analysis after the fact? Not sure if my question totally makes sense. I'm just wondering if musicians are thinking of all the things you analyzed as they write the song.
So glad you enjoyed the video! Re: your very interesting question, I know a musician or two that do have music theory in mind when they write songs but I think most of the time writing music is a more about instinct. More often than not, songwriters are following tension and release intuitively, the same way you and I know how to speak and write in English without having to construct every sentence from scratch. It just flows, because we're fluent. Same with music a lot of the time. Getting too analytical when you're creating can be counterproductive. I don't think about music that way when I write. The way I see it, music theory is one language that can be used to describe music afterward and explain why certain things "work" or feel this way or that.
This chorus is just a b7, 4, 1, 5 progression. It’s incredibly common in gospel music.

Dave uses sus chords all the time, and uses major/minor chords for chorus, especially his early stuff. He never used to play in easy guitar keys E A etc very often. Great analysis

FYI, Carter pronounces it “bow-ford”, not “byoo-ford”. Also, Dave has had no musical training. He doesn't even really know what keys he writes his music in. If he needs to know, he'll ask Tim Reynolds.
