- This documentary shows the lifestyles and personal goals runners have. Whether it be the everyday runner, serious runner, or dedicated professional they all have different motives. Thanks to everyone involved in the making of this video, very much appreciated.

Part of me wonders if the population of runners is increasing because more and more people are searching for something a bit more basic. Something that doesn't require a ton of equipment and something that has the capability to clear mental clutter. Running is amazing, my life wouldn't be the same without it.
Running changed me...made me proud of who I am! I love knowing that I am a runner!
I've been running for just a little over 47 3/4 years. I started at age 21 and at 69, I'm still running. Not competing anymore but I'm still running. It benefits me physically, mentally and spiritually. I love it !
TheWildbill242 RESPECT!!!
Madness for me is NOT running. Since i've started, i stopped smoking (5yrs already), lost some weight and most importantly - can keep up with my daughter's level of energy.
I love running! only fellow runners get it..it's a great stress reliever, and a good way to clear your head. the feeling of accomplishment after my first marathon was the best.
I love this Documentary, it was done great. Hats off to who ever made this and everyone who worked on it.
Humans are made to do this. It's in our blood. It's painful but it's what we're built to do like it or not.
+Rory It's also in the genes and passes down generation to generation.
A ton of good philosopy here. Thanks. I'm still learning since the early 70's.
All of your subjects interviewed were amazing proponents of running, but the most inspiring was Tony Thomas.I've been a distance runner for 40 years and my motivation comes from inside of me,Tony is a prime example of the human spirit in all of us.I overcame almost the same things and I know where he's coming from,he's a beautiful person and should be commended on his journey.
Gotta love that Tony Thomas!
Maybe running form is a lot more important than previously believed.
Like most (if not all) long term 'senior' runners I plan & hope to continue running indefintely even if I never toe another starting line. Like T.Thomas my legs have taken a lifetime of work - having been running on & of since my early teens (gave up on soccer after Gr. 10).
Loved the video, well done on every level. It's something I could point a non-runner to when they ask why I run. Loved all the coaching interviews too. The longer you run, the more perspective you get on everything in life and I have found track and xc coaches to be some of the most articulate and thoughtful people I have met. It's great to see their passion for the sport and the people who participate in it.
Tony Thomas sounds like a real character. Be great to go running with him!
It`s a passion for me too, but I agree with the bearded guy, discipline is no. 1!
I would totally agree, glad we had such articulate interviews. :) Happy you could relate to Tony's story. Thanks
nothing beats that buzz
Tony THOMAS, look a good mad, thank's for this documentary, i will like that more time, more inside the life of the persons, like "spirit of the marathon"...
Been running for more than 3 years. Up until now I am still running, and I mostly likely still running for the upcoming years. I love the joy that running been providing me. I am pretty sure that others feel the same too. The longest distance that I able to run was 70km. I hope that this pandemic ends so that we, in the Philippines, could start competing in some fun runs.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Keep on running! Thanks
thanks Brad for the video.. Awesome stuff
Wow, loved this. "Passion trumps logic" love that line/
I started running late in my mid 30's.I wished i had started in my 20's but that's another story.
Suffering from Asthma i knew it was the only way of controlling this terrible affliction so i started running 20 yards then walking 20 yards and feeling terrible,i was so unfit.
I kept going, wearing the wrong shoes and nearly breaking my ankle in the dark.
Now i went to a sports shop and bought a pair of ASICS which were expensive but good.
I kept going, suffering tendon and shin splints. Then I met a real runner and shop owner and bought some great kit (Brooks + Ron Hill) and got very good advice ..i ran/walked every Saturday in bad weather only now in my mid 40's i can do 5k's no problem and 10k's if i have time every Saturday.I know many people are better than me but i have bettered myself through running and now forward to the weekends.
Great video!! Running has changed my life too!!
Tony Thomas: "If knee gets worse, I will cut my legs of and run with "Blades" :))
Respect man! :)
Yea, it's definitely passion, not madness.
Amazing Video. It really deserves more views.
Running is about activating the organic machinery called the the human body. That one can go distances, the very fundamental need of life, with that machinery despite the pain and the bodily punishment gives a very different kind of satisfaction and a feeling of achievement to the one who does it. While fighting with the pain you are at the same time finding and learning new ways to cope with other problems in your life (as Dean Karnazes put it). Lot of oxygen going to your brain is another side effect. And the fact that this feeling comes out of nowhere when you run is the very motivation for one to keep doing it. It is free and is out there when you want it. As simple as that.
The other important thing for the new starter is: Do not run to punish your body, run to learn how to deal with the difficulties. You will gradually improve over time and will not believe what you can achieve compared to the times when you first started.
Inspiring. Thanks.
People have different experiences running. I'll say this much in my experiences it doesn't feel as good until I get past 1 mile about then it feels better. So if you cross a slump there can be a reward on the other side if you keep pushing. Stay hydrated, carb load and make sure to plant your feet the right way to prevent Injury. Have a good day people :) running and jogging is great.
For me the first 2 miles are a slog....but once I pass that mark it just feels like I can run forever
Nice video! Keep on!
Thanks!
I run year-round. From spring to fall, I add cycling. If injured, cycling is better. However, endurance cycling will give me blisters. And when that happens, cycling is suspended. Running is probably the least expensive sport.
I love running
Injuries are the worst.
I wonder, if one only runs for the joy of winning races, what will they do once they start finishing second or worse? I think those kids need to find their motivation from something less shallow than victories.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to win and enjoying it when you do. A loss just motivates you to work harder for the next challenge. No one who has "ONLY" beatng others as their goal get very far. I don't think anyone in the videosaid that it was either.
***** I feel like most people race against themselves.. For some it will be attempting to finish before the cutoff; for others, it will be contention for victory. My point of view is it just depends where that race against yourself takes you.
***** Totally agree. I've been a runner for years. I've run no races and i've won nothing either. Not 1 medal. But i've run all day sometimes 40 miles or more...for no reason other than I like running
+Jussi Niskanen there are always age group victories.....I get what you're saying though.
Is Walt Jr. narrating?
i like it very much!!!!!!!!!
Running has save my life too!
Trying to break 19 minutes for the first time ever and win the SalemFest 5K this week! I need some inspiration!!!
I like the poem/speech at the end. Who wrote that?
I feel like i connected with the bearded guy so many times.
Who's singing in the beginning? That's badass.
Running is great, it's true freedom, it's exhilarating it's nature's antidepressant, " Fools watch while the Wise run "
Cool video. What that great song?!
music at 12:30 ? please!!
Yep, I've seen over the past 2 years an increase of runners where I am. There have been 5 to 10k events popping up all over the place. Most are fund raisers
Pre-race foods: Take a tip form the pro cyclists of old. "Rice and eggs are good for the leggs." (It's gotta rhyme, no?)
Is Tony Thomas still a coach?
@ 9:45 - he says he has knee osteoarthritis in his knees and he still runs? Now that's madness.
joe louden I got osteoarthritis on my both knees. I'm taking medical care for knees and I still run. Not long distances (like half marathon), but still doing around 70km per month.
anybody know what is the title of music in start?
+Tomasz Dudek Wondering the same, did you ever find out?
+Tomasz Dudek The song is very similar to 'Clubbed to death' on The Matrix soundtrack.
hey 5:55 thats the state meet in michigan
"I'd like to struck it when I in a deep thinking"
Playmaker's Coach
( my grammar correct?)

It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change. ... expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.
@Acuity414 Thanks! Acuity414
running, the most natural movement can do alone with a group, see the scenery alot faster, more fit, does require alot of equipment, but becomes obessession when your training for races, people get more injuries running then walking or hiking, addictions for some who ignore injuries refuse to rest, who believe in recovery runs (no such thing) many do not rest enough, too many carbs in their diets, not enough sulfer, vitd3, not enough fats and proteins to much caloire restriction for many
Don't agree at all with the bearded guy, You need no goals whatsoever to become a runner and stay a runner. All you need is a love of running. Simple as that
+T4C I think he's speaking in terms of competitive running. But yes, I agree with you, a love for running is all that is necessary to keep getting out there.
6soulcontrol I'd loose the beard first..running sweat and beards are a bad mix, if it's competitive running he's blabbering on about
+T4C LOL
I thought Epic Beard Dude was pretty cool.
+T4C I consider loving running a personal goal of mine.:)
madness to me is NOT running.OMG I would be straight weaving baskets in Bellevue hospital if iwasnt running....beyond runners rage!!
jenison fieldhouse for the win
What's the name of the song?
i wonder which song to its matrix clubbed to death but the made sound different
If you've not already found it, search for "Clubbed To Death (slow remix)" here on YT and it should be the first hit. It def has similarities to the original 'Clubbed To Death' but apparently it's not Rob Dougan official.
Running is for the ayes
Really like what the bearded guy is saying; the beard is ridiculous though...
After running in cross country for a few years, I have to say, running feels... so slow for me...no offense to the runners out there. I'm now on inline skates skating cross country and it just feels so much more exhilarating and fast. But to each their own I guess
It's not a bad thing human beings have always been fascinated by going fast and we always try to push the envelope. From walking to horse back to cars and now planes.
I have a friend who hates running but loves biking. Everyone has their niche
When you are losing your health for run just 0.1 second faster, then you are mad because you are not a professional, you don't need to do it.
Without a doubt loved this! This goes for a two thumbs up! If you don't mind, check out my newest video and subscribe if you rock with it.
I know that you were not addressing me but I must protest. God is blamed for everything man/woman does wrong. We have minds and can decide what the best course of action is to do in any given situation. If anything God lends us a helping hand with the holy scriptures.
Medical books do not tell the surgeon everything he must do in a given situation just as cooks must allow for temperature, climate changes, etc. The cookbook does not tell all.
But cookbooks and medical books are guides for life or at least those disciplines.
