  • Review of Society of the Snow. As a big fan of Alive (1993) I was keen to see what else the story could offer. This is not a remake more a new version of the original story about the plane crash of 1972 that stranded twenty young people deep in the Andres Mountains.

What I don't hear in any reviews of 'Society of the Snow' is director J.A. Bayona's attention to detail to the point of perfectionism; ie, the airplane crash damage is almost identical to the real crashed airplane, the actors looked like their real counterparts, the clothing everyone wore, including sunglasses, pretty much exact all the way down to the fabric pattern used for the aircraft window curtains. Yeah. And then put on top of that all the cinematography you see of the landscape surrounding the plane, every peak and valley, every direction including the trek out IS THE REAL LOCATION of this story back in 1972. Seriously, lets all be honest with ourselves, the only way we could imagine this in a more realistic way would've been to have experienced it personally. 5 Stars, 10 of 10. A true masterpiece of a film.

I agree I was stunned by how much work time and detail went into this film and the icing on the cake, was the locations and feeling like you were there. No green screen etc!

The thing is, that Alive is almost a parody of the story, this movie not only shows us what the survivors did, but also the ones that couldn’t make it out of the mountains, giving them a voice. Alive pretty much centered around a couple of survivors, most of them with fake names and a lot of ficcional things happening in between the crash and the recovery

Great movie, the most faithful to the events including the language, and the cherry on top were the cameos of several survivors, including Nando and Canessa. I think every movie, documentary, interview and book complements this extraordinary event. I've been fascinated with this story for decades, since Alive.

The film was also shot up in the valley where the fuselage came to rest. A lot of the backdrop to the fuselage scenes are accompanied with The Volume (think Disney's "The Mandalorian") where they also shot on a set in Spain. I love your review. It's the first time I've actually heard someone criticize "Alive" and explain what the faults of that film were so succinctly. For me while I loved Enzo, the other two standouts for me were Agustin Pardella (Nando), and Matias Recalt (Canessa). The music was also part of the perfection of this film in that Michael Giacchino used Uruguayan themes to highlight the film nicely. I've been with this story ever since reading the book "Alive" back in 1976 two years after its publication. These men and their story have been with me since then. This film captures all of them in a way "Alive" never could, nor the utterly pedestrian and exploitative 1970s movie, "Survive." Thank you for such an insightful review. 🙏

I came to love Spanish directors, will watch this movie. Also : their paranormal movies are always excellent and made with great eye for detail.

I just saw it, excellent 👍👍👍. That story of New Zealand Air , the passenger plane that crashed with mount erebus, just for tourism and for spectacular kicks was nuts...never a movie about this.

The numerous cameos of actual survivors in this beautiful film shows you just how involved they were in the making of it. Nando Parrado can be seen holding the door open for the actors who portray him and his family at the airport. Carlitos Paez portrays his own father announcing the names of the survivors. Roberto Canessa is seen standing directly behind the actor portraying him as they are walking into the hospital at the end. This is easily one of the best movies I’ve ever seen 💙💙💙

Such a well crafted movie. I grew up watching the 1993 movie, and while I always enjoyed it, it's pretty much a Hollywood movie like you said. There's nothing fun about this movie, it's just brutal and heartbreaking and I think they completely captured that in this new version.

Not a remake of alive totally different presentation of the story of the survivors

Perdón, no se si nos perdemos en la traducción pero no es el mismo libro que el de la pelicula "Viven"...es otro libro que se llama igual que la pelicula " La sociedad de la nieve" . Si cuentan los dos la misma historia.

@@FloydLouisCifer This film isn't a remake of "Alive." "Alive" is purely a concotion of the American mindset in forcing it to be something this story is not: A grandiose and almost ridiculous adventure film. It was directed by Frank Marshall and produced by Kathleen Kennedy. That's all one has to know about it to know it'll be what they wanted, not what the story is. The reason this film is getting the hate is because, eek gads, one has to read subtitles instead of just sitting there eating popcorn expecting it to be akin to "The Grey." That's my feeling at least.

Not only the survivors were OK with this version, but 3 of them made a cameo in the film. At the beginning when they enter the airport a man opens the door for Nando’s mother and sister, that’s the real Nando Parrado leaving the airport. Carlitos Paez’s father who makes the call to the radio station with the names at the end is the real Carlitos Paez. And when they are in the hospital at the end and the doctors are checking them a doctor puts his hands on the shoulders of Roberto Canessa, that doctor is the real Roberto Canessa who is an actual doctor. Fantastic movie

Two movies based on a true accounts and not a remake of a movie. Alive is based on the book Alive…..the story of the Andes Survivors.
